There are many area in Europe where the people speak not only their own native language, but grow up being fluent in the languages of the areas they border. I always loved that idea, and I find it very impressive. I think it would be a very positive thing if someday Americans were all bilingual and spoke English as well as Spanish, the language of our neighboring country.
Neighboring country? Hell, in Canada, we have a hard enough time with people outside of Quebec who are unable to speak French which is recognized an an official language of Canada!
I agree, in my travels, I have always been impressed with the multi-lingual abilities exhibited by the majority of Europeans I have come across. I would love to be able to speak in a variety of foreign tongues.

^^^ no, not everyone. I said there are areas in Europe where people are bi or even tri-lingual. I've also lived in rural areas where you'd be hard pressed to find anyone who spoke a word of English.
The point is that there are areas of Europe where everyone (or the vast majority) of natives are multi-lingual, and I think that's a great thing. I'm not sure why Americans are so horrified over the idea of becoming a country where many/most/all people can speak English and Spanish. I'd don't see why being a nation that can also speak the language of our neighboring country is such a terrible thing.
It's not that people are horrified by it, but trying to conduct business and government in a country where there are two languages is not good. English is the current lingua franca of the western hemisphere and when immigrants come HERE, they should learn to speak it and not demand that people who live here learn their language. I am NOT opposed to US residents learning other languages, I just don't like immigrants coming here and demanding that their native tongue be catered to. I wouldn't move to Mexico and demand the right to vote in English, or have English street signs and govt info given to me in English. That's ridiculous, but it's what WE are doing.

Actually, its pretty accurate. Look at the Netherlands, Belgium, Denmark, Austria, Croatia, Ireland...there are some STUNNING examples of countries that made international language a priority, and their young generation can easily speak at least 3 languages with fluency. Its certainly not a myth, I've seen and heard it myself extensively, in addition to my own background as European with multiple language fluency.
I've been to all of those countries except Croatia...I didn't see it, but I did see a lot of people saying things to people of other countries "Can I say it in English?" when they couldn't understand each other. And Ireland is probably the worst example to use, they speak English, some Gaelic and that's about all.
The best example of your point would probably be the Dutch, they tend to speak Dutch (of course), English, and German, with some French, all out of necessity...but get outside of any large city and that tendency disappears except for English. And the French are the WORST. The speak French, English (in the cities) and even their English is forced sometimes. If you try to speak French to them they're happy. If not, forget it, they get all snooty (ok that's only in Paris, elsewhere not so bad).

This I agree with. When I went to Mexico I brushed up on my Spanish. And that was just on vacation AND I was going to a tourist area(Cancun and Cozumel) that I know are English speaking. Its a matter of respect.
If you want to live and work in this country and reap the benefits of it...respect this country. Its people, its laws and its language. To not do so is not only disrespectful, it is ignorant and ungrateful.

Exactly, which is why I think high school students being required to take Spanish to graduate is ridiculous. Having the option to take Spanish, and being required to complete some foreign language class of their choice makes sense because of the educational value, but Spanish is no more educational then French or Japanese so it makes no sense that we shove that language down our youth's throats.

My personal problem with it, as I said, is that as soon as people around here know you speak Spanish, suddenly they want you to work as a translator. You might want to be in human resources or marketing, but some corporations will bamboozle you into being translator at some point, when they need it, even if they know you don't want to do it. My bf knows Spanish but only his close friends know it for this reason. And he rarely uses it.
As far as adopting it as a second language:
I think taking on a second language to be spoken mostly in the cities, would just complicate things for no real reason. Sure, it's a hobby, but some people would rather take on other hobbies or work 60 hour weeks. For those who enjoy it, more power to you. Join a network of people who enjoy speaking Spanish. :) It could be fun.
I know there are benefits to learning it. But the benefits don't outweigh the costs (time that could be spent learning other things that will be more useful to me in the long run).

No, its not. I can't seem to Google the information right now, as its from academic business journals. But about 20 years ago, education changed in Ireland, and now there is a large part of the young population that is proficient in multiple foreign languages. It was one of the big contributing factors that made Ireland become attractive for foreign investors in the last 10 years.
Its certainly not as widespread as the Dutch, but pushing multiple foreign languages in school was a huge deal in Ireland. Talk to some of the 20 and 30 somethings in the large towns, you'll see....

I live in Texas, and am not aware of any schools that force spanish language classes on the students. And we have the largest spanish-speaking population in the country.
Now, some schools don't have a great deal of funding, and can maybe only afford teachers in spanish and french, for example. And spanish is a far useful language to learn than french, so many kids my flock to it. That's an issue over lack of good educational funding though...not every school can get japanese and Farsi teachers, ya know?

The knowledge of an additional foreign language can help someone land a great job/and or receive accolades, respect, then PROMOTION at their job. Your bf does a disservice to himself by not making it known that he has an additional skillset.
I say, if you want to succeed, let everyone know your worth and value. Its ridiculous to discourage that among people. More xenophobia ET, gotta work on that babes.

He's director of engineering. He's already at the top, and he didn't need Spanish to get there lol. But he wears many hats. They are expected to use whatever skills they have when necessary, and no thanks, I choose to contribute in other ways. People do what they like to do as much as they can. I don't need it or enjoy doing it, so.... as I said, choices. It's a choice. I don't WANT to work as translator, so I am trying to avoid it, just like 99% of the people in his office ARE. lmao. It's a bore. They had to hire someone from the outside even though 25% of the people there can translate it, because everyone hides from it.
I encourage having the choice and doing what you love. If that's speaking Spanish, great! I personally find it boring to learn another language, and would prefer to pursue other things. That's all. It really has nothing to do with the fact that someone of another ethnicity speaks it, for me personally. Sometimes the activity of doing it just doesn't fit another person's personality at certain times in their lives. What I choose to do because I am driven toward it, will get me farther in life than something I am doing just because I think it might get me a promotion. There are a dozen other primary things I need to learn in order to reach my goal. Speaking spanish isn't necessary to reach my goals. I'm a very goal-oriented individual. And, there are a dozen hobbies that hold my interest at any given time; speaking a different language is just not a part of my dream, but it might be part of yours. Great!
Do I think it might be a goal for someone else and be very beneficial to them, or that it might be fun for someone else to learn as a hobby? Sure. I don't discourage that. The only thing I expect is some sort of growth in some direction.
Sure, learning Spanish CAN be beneficial, if you choose it. Just like learning to draw CAN be beneficial, but I choose other directions. It's not a need, at this point. If the time came when I needed to learn it in order to reach my goals, I would, but it's not what I consider enjoyable, much like I don't think maintaining a spreadsheet is enjoyable.
I also disagree with the fact that I am xenophobic. I live surrounded by Indians. I live in the only white-occupied apartment in my building. I chose to live here out of many other options, and I like my neighbors, and eat in their restaurant often. I live in an area where whites are the minority, and I chose it. The building next to me is mostly African American.
You seem to be confusing xenophobia with someone who has high expectations on character and in practices, can be negative, and is generally pessimistic. Just because I don't like someone of another race doesn't mean I don't like them BECAUSE they are of that ethnicity. I dislike just as many white people as I do any other ethnicity. That's what brought me to California in the first place, because of the high redneck population in the area I was born. I prefer the diversity of living in California.
I think alot of people also are confused about my motives a lot of the time, because I am a pessimist and my delivery is from that standpoint. That doesn't mean my motives are not to send people in a positive direction.

That's not what I've experienced. Americans expect to be catered to everywhere they go. Many if not most tourists don't even bother to try to learn some basics of the language of the country they're traveling to. When I traveled around Europe, I saw signs in English everywhere (no, not in the rural areas so much, but in the cities, definitely). It's hardly comporable, anyway. Even when I was in small dorfs in Germany, where the majority of people spoke German and only German, we could always find a few friendly people who spoke enough English to help us get by in some difficult situations. As you said, English is spoken nearly everywhere. I don't disagree that immigrants should definitely learn the native language of the country, but it always strikes me as a little arrogant when Americans complain about encountering people who aren't immediately proficient in English, considering how they rarely have to experience the same situation when they travel. Maybe I have a little more consideration because my family moved around a lot to foreign countries and I know what it's like to go through that difficult a transition period, and how ridiculous it is to expect people to arrive in a foreign land and immediately be fluent. It just makes sense to me that progressive nations would start to become more bilingual when they have a large influx of immigrants.

English is the new International language for travel and business. The eurotrash haven't yet realized it but in a hundred years speaking their native tongue will be quaint and kind of backward.
The ugly american stereotype? Sure every stereotype exists because there is an example of it somewhere. As for going to another country and expecting to be catered to in a fashion one expects at home; Euro are as guilty as Americans. Take Costa del Sol with whole communities catering to one country or another. The island of Mallora or the Canary Islands the same. Resorts clustered together catering to Brits, Germans, Nords, and Russians who want he climate but their own foods, their own music, their own television.

Generally people in Europe know their Native tongue, and then English. When they visit an English-speaking country, they speak English.
I'm not being difficult, but I've been to Europe several times and have been very observant of language behavior there. I'm not making this up.

I'm sorry you don't agree with my viewpoint, but I don't think that a black woman in America struggles anymore than a white woman in America.
I can't believe that it's almost 2010 - and people still think like this.
This is so sad and horrible and it just proves how some, maybe even most white people have NO IDEA - NO IDEA AT ALL what it is like to be a person of color in this country. In this world, as a matter of fact.
I have been pulled over sooo many times in white areas because of my brown skin (I go from Mariah Carey's color to almost as dark as Rudy Huxtable [forgot her real name]) and when the cop looks at me and sees that I'm not Black/African American - it's like they all of a sudden decide to let me go and warn me to pay closer attention to my signaling - or some other bullshit reason Blacks get pulled over all the time.
I have been followed around stores, asked if I am lost, asked if I am sure I'm in the right store or right place. This ONLY happens to me if I am wearing a beret (which I wear like, several days a week cuz it's just my thing). Funny though - when they see my hair maybe on a different day they kinda lump me into some Asian subgroup and kinda leave me alone.
I've had white frat guys and the "guido" types come up behind me singing how they want some of my "black booty", then they see my face and they're like... "Ohhh my bad so sorry sexy mami".
Black people have it HARD and I say this because I only get like 25% of what they get and I sympathize.
Even with me having a last name that sounds like "Al Jazeera El Habibi Yousef Azabajani Mohammad Abdullah" and looking like some type of desert dwelling Indian - I still have it easier than Blacks/African Americans.
White people - wake up.
It sounds so far fetched and made up and paranoid and over dramatized cuz you guys don't have to deal with it. Yes, it's horrible and unbelievable but believe it cuz it happens every single day to those of us with dark skin.

Ok, that whole WOC thing she brings up.....
From her experience that she has shared, she has felt there was discrimination for WOC/ethnic women to get hired in the modeling industry back when she was trying to get hired...but made it. I think her intent by sharing her experience with ppl, is to encourage women of all ethnicities & shapes to follow their dreams. I believe it too. Talisa Soto(a Latina model) also had a hard time getting hired as a model here in the U.S. a few years ago. As she claimed also, due to discrimination. She made it in Europe, that's where she finally got hired.
So, as for Tyra...That's where the whole power pride comes from, which there is nothing wrong with that! That's probably the only thing I respect her for.
Other than that, a lot of garbage comes out of her mouth. LOL.

Yeah I'd have to agree with this one. Way too many black men in particular treat black women like fucking dogs.
What's worse, any criticism of this tendency, especially when it's directed at the hard core rappers and the hordes of dudes trying to act/walk/talk exactly like them, will lead to counter charges of horrible nasty evil racism on the part of the critic. Girl, this is soooo true! I experience the reverse of this all the time. I get pulled over a lot because I live in the ghetto, and drive around late at night doing all kinds of illegal manuevers (Not stopping at stop sign, pulling through gas stations to avoid red lights, etc). Once the officer walks up to my window and sees an obviously upper-middle-class white girl, he completely changes his attitude and usually says something like "What are you doing here? This is a bad neighborhood", then tells me he's gonna let me off with a warning. It's fucked up, and I get away with murder because of it. I am fully aware that the traffic stop is often an excuse to search for drugs or drunk drivers, and if I were black or hispanic I would probably be detained and searched far more often, not to mention all the tickets I would get. And the worst part about it is that usually I actually am riden dirtay and I don't even get asked about it because I don't fit the stereotype of what they are looking for.
It bothers me when white people are unaware of the privileges they have.

Can I ask you something...
Are you mixed race or look mixed race?
Are you a black person... but not African American (i.e. Jamaican, Haitian, Cuban, Brasilian, Nigerian etc)?
Do you speak/act/dress/carry yourself a certain way?
Because if you do, that's probably why.
People like to pretend like there isn't a way of talking or acting white - but there is. Perception is reality. SO if someone THINKS that dressing business casual or speaking proper English or putting education on your list of high priorities is acting white - to them, it is.
Uneducated horrible ghetto ass backwards people (of any race) often have this mindset of what "Uppity" is. And uppity is always associated with a white male in power. Even to the white people that are called trailer trash ... their idea of uppity is the same as everyones. You don't have to be black, hispanic, asian... the top of the tower in our society is the powerful white man.
So to a person unhappy with their own situation... anything the powerful white male does = cause for hatred.

Logic? Not today, lol. I thought it was obvious that I was joking about the Mexico comment... I mean we can only go back so far in time before it just gets ridiculous. If we go back to the Native Americans we'd have to go back to crossing the Bering strait and before that to Pangaea. Of course there's a limit :)

If I ever run into you in real life... and you're all gussied up in a business suit and tie with someplace very important to go... I'll be sure to strip naked in the street, douse myself in baby oil, jump on your back and hold on until I slide off. Have fun explaining away the grease stains
I'm a middle age white executive who frequently dresses in a business suit if I go anywhere on business, which is a lot... My whereabouts and schedule aren't hard to find or figure out or ask me for and what the hell - I'm sure the drycleaners could use something to do...
On topic - Tyra is an ignorant bitch and a fucking horrid talk show host. How the FUCK does she win awards for that piece of shit they call a show?! Next Oprah my ass - Oprah is overrated IMNSHO, but at least she IS good at what she does.
BTW - anyone want to hear a story about her getting one-upped, I'd be happy to share one, lol. It was 20 years ago, but it DID happen and Oprah was, um, somewhat ungracious about it shall we say? :P

I'm still shocked that there are people who refuse to acknowledge their priviledge! I think y'all should read "Unpacking the Invisible Knapsack". It's a short, insightful piece.
Privilege by whom; could it be manifest destiny, ordained by g-d?

How did 1,500 criminals from Spain conquer the most advanced civilization in the America's? The White man has a lower IQ than the Asian yet he holds them in subjection. Look at today's volunteer Army; homogeneous to the max. I am what I am that is all I can be I can be no more. I will not apologies for what I am; g-d made me that way.

that's because she lost a boyfriend(or was it a fiance) to a stripper, and now she hates all of us. If she's supposedly so much better than us, whyd she get dumped for one of us? I can't fucking stand her. She was actually somewhat attractive before she opened her mouth and started talking.
is that what happened? i wondered why she had such a fixation on strippers.
i also hate mariah carey. all she does it stare at her own tits. i love looking at my tits and mine are fake and i still dont stare at them all day like she does. she also has a face like a dropped pie ;D
Agreed on Tyra being a bitch and self-absorbed.

Tyra Banks was a terror to work with, say some employees of CW gabfest

Just a few days after Tyra Banks announced her show would be ending after this season, her employees have dished about how it was "pretty difficult" to work with the diva.

"The Tyra Banks Show" may be over, but her former employees have only just begun to spill about what it was really like to work on the CW gabfest.
And we hate to break it to you TyTy, but it's not all good.
"There had been high turnover of employees for years," a past crew member says, insisting that many people quit after just a few months because it was "pretty difficult to work for Tyra."
"She and the higher-ups on the production staff could be extremely brutal," the source says. "She really is a diva."
An industry source who has worked on the show agreed, adding, "Everything had to be done Tyra's way."
But to her credit, Miz Banks isn't the only one who thinks that her way is the right way: the show earned two Daytime Emmys over its relatively short five-season span. And another former staffer who worked closely with Banks says the 36-year-old indeed knows how to make good TV.
"Honestly, I don't know how it would be to work under her," says the snitch, who served in a high-level position. "But for me, it was a good experience. Tyra just knows how she likes things done. And as for her ‘diva-ness,' well, it sells."
So why stop now?
Banks released a statement this week insisting she wants to focus on launching her film company, Bankable Studios, which she says will bring "positive images of women to the big screen."
But it may be her own image that needs polishing. Reports surfaced yesterday that Banks told the press that her show was coming to an end before she even alerted her staff - and according to some past employees, that's more than likely.
"It wouldn't be surprising," our first source says. "When the show moved from L.A. to New York, several staffers weren't even directly told about the change - they heard through the grapevine that it was going to move locations. Even so, a lot of those people gave up their lives on the West Coast so they could continue working for the show. Now they're out of luck."
Reps for the show didn't respond to calls for comment by deadline.

But have you ever been discriminated against in America because of your white skin? I'd guess not, and if you have, it wouldn't compare to to the racial discrimination many Asians, blacks, and other minorities have experienced.
I've been discriminated against because of my white skin.
Please explain to me why it doesn't compare to someone of another race or minority being discriminated against.
Isn't your statement... that white people who experience discrimination don't compare to non-whites experiencing discrimination... discrimination? /:O

Honestly, discrimination is always bad; however, you cannot honestly believe that white people have ever been as oppressed or discriminated against more than most minorities. Give me a break. A lot of white people don't understand white priviledge because...well, they're white.
Most minority groups can take being discriminated against for hundreds to thousands of years but some white people in today's world think getting called a cracker really equals those expiriences? Um, no. Does it make it right? No. Does it make it the same? No.
In today's world white is still considered "right" therefore you still have the upper hand in certain situations. To think otherwise is just plain nutty.
PS: Oh yeah, Trya is irritating.

Yeah - because every member of every "minority group" alive today was also alive to experience all those hundreds of years of oppression.
And being called a "cracker" has about teh same effect on "us" as any ethnic slur SHOULD have on anyone - basically as much as you let it. Nor is it the extent of "reverse racism".
Yeah - there are idiot racists out there. Newsflash - not all of them - in fact, probably not even the majority of them - are white.

I never said white people were as oppressed or discriminated against as most minorities are. I asked why it's more important to everyone that non-whites are discriminated against than whites.
That is discrimination.
I don't understand how anyone can sit here and say "discrimination is bad... but it's worse if it happens to someone who isn't white"...
[For the record... <---Person of mixed race here. Don't all go assume that I can never understand because I'm white. Thanks. ;D]
