i like fake tanners too. i'm a total pro at applying them...even on my hands and feet won't give away that it's fake. the color will if i don't have a base tan, but that's not my fault. unfortunately, i hate the way they rub off onto light clothes. and they make my skin smell funny for days after applying.
honestly, if you find the right fake tanner, you shouldnt be able to tell the difference. and not all of them smell bad.
but i do hate how they rub off on everythng. if i dont have black sheets, i cant sleep naked half the time because i will slowly turn the sheets brown! Which makes me look like im really dirty! you can avoid some of this if you find lotion without bronzer...
in other news, i just got airbrush tanned for the first time in my life a couple of weeks ago. I liked it a lot, smelled good and came out even and made it so i didnt have to worry. and it was a nice dark brown color too!

i just got new contacts so i cant wait to tan to bring em out.... if it would ever stop "SNOWING" IN FLORIDA and just get hot already! headed to a bed now...... (sorry skin)
I totally know how you feel! lol I used to go to the tanning bed almost every week, but now I only go maybe once every month or two just to even out tan lines because I hate them. I tan really dark in the sun and it normally lasts a while but I look shtty when I go a few months and let myself get lighter. I think all the tan people in Miami brainwash us into staying dark all the time. haha

Miami, eh? I'm in Australia's equivalent of Miami/Florida (the Gold Coast), and it's the same here. I am a total oddball here cause I'm pale. I mean, not EVERYONE is brown but the majority are, and there are also a lot of older women around here who have that whole leather handbag skin look going on. lol
And yes, this is another issue with fake tan - how it rubs off on everything. My expensive antique couch is discoloured due to me lying on it, even hours/days after applying fake tan. (and this is also what I was saying about how I'd get white patches from where the tan had rubbed off, even days after it was supposedly "set"). Grr.

I was tanning in beds, then stopped for about a year or so, then I started up again and did it for like a month.. Then I just cancelled my membership. I am currently looking into airbrush tanning.. at the tanning salon I was going to they offered unlimited airbrush tanning for around $100 a month. Which is a good deal since its unlimited.

Im currently doing fake bake boyond bronze at night, and then moisturising each morning after tanning with cocoa butter and my cracked tan seems to be better, the fake bake oil free moisturiser was not moisturisey enough i think, my skin feels (and looks) a million miles better!

So, I've decided to take the plunge into self tanning..I know a lot of people recommend the sally hansen airbrush legs, and the jergens, but are there other at home (cheaper) products that dont smell/dont rub off? I always embraced my paleness but definitely want a little color that still looks natural (without cancer)..help?

I am porcelian skinned and don't plan on tanning anytime soon. My husband and many of my customers enjoy my pale skin of course me being really pin up looking helps I supposed.
I am considering getting a little color nothing too dramatic. I am worried it will look odd on me though.

Lotion the Loreal with bronzer is awesome and jergens gradual lotion to keep it looking good between reapplication.

Oh crap I think I got the jergens express one, but gradual over 3 days i think it said- anyone try that one? I also got the neutrogena fine mist spray ? Do you use the lotion right after you shave, and then do the spray?

I tried Jerkens but the smell was awful. I have looked into a spray tan or getting airbrushed. Any recomendations for VERY pale skin just wanting a tad bit of color??

I gave up on the self tanner when it didn't come out even when I did it- sucked it up and got a real spray tan, so far so good :)

Does anyone have any tricks for keeping sunless face tanner out of blonde hair and eyebrows? I wear a shower cap when I spray it on but then I will be left with a weird white line so I try to rub it in, but then it gets in my hair. I really can't imagine how to pull this off but it must be possible.

I also have blonde hair and got a spray tan at a salon and asked the same thing, and its not supposed to stain or alter your color at all, and when you shower it'll come out- thats what i was told anyway!

Idk sunshine that feels like bullshit to me. I mean I guess it makes sense in that the DHA works with something in the skin not hair right? But I certainly have had issues with the hair around my face being a little more orangey than the rest :-/ This is something I should google.

Yes the stuff thats in airbrush spray tans DHA is made from beets and its all natural-reacts with pigments in your skin not hair, so no, its not bullshit. Not sure what chemicals are in the stuff you're using though, nothing should be orange.

I love it. I used to tan in beds but I don't want to get wrinkly.

shaina how do you get your body evenly like your back? I dont have anyone to help me so i couldnt make my back even, or anything :( getting a salon spray tan is annoying, but hopefully worth it (just got it so we'll see how long it lasts)

I tan outside as my 1st choice, and then tanning beds 2nd to even it out, since I HATE tan lines.
I have been in tanning beds off and on for damn near 20yrs, and so far so good, lol. No cancer, no spots, no leathery skin.
I think honestly, some of that is due to genetics, and some to your natural skin color, if you age better or worse than others.

K I said it feels like bullshit but makes sense, not that it is. Just seems if it can run off on your clothes it could on almost white hair. I think many at-home tanners have a bit of bronzer in them so you can see where you've already put it on and tell right away if its splotchy. Its probably also a result from cosmetic bronzers I use like Dior Bronze Sun Powder Spray. Thanks for acting like I'm crazy for having this problem though and nothing should possibly be orange.
I'm using the new protein spray tanner from Fusion now. It gives great color but I'm still nervous about the hair thing even though apparently it should be fine.

Umm..no one said you're crazy. You said you had a problem, so I tried to explain and help you. I don't know what chemicals or the ingredients are in the stuff you use, so like i said, it very well may turn you orange. All I know is the spray tan at a salon I got didn't, and was all natural.

Tanning bed. I've never had luck (ie skill) with self tanners, and due to the rubbing-off stories I've heard (and ruined bras/panties I've seen on the floor in the dressing room), have had zero interest in a spray on tan.
+1 spray ons don't do shit for me! I use a lotion with triple or quad bronzers.

I just discovered Xen tan and it's the best I've ever used. It's really dark without being orange, smells great and doesn't streak. It lasts for ages too.

^^ They sell that in the US? Where did you get it? I tried sally hansen airbrush legs (use it for full body though minus face) its amazinggg dark but not orange but its pretty much airbrush makeup you have to do it everyday and it rubs off a teeny bit. Speaking of face, anyone know of a good tanning lotion for sensitive face? I had the neutrogena build a tan from last year but i think its expired, hasnt worked :(

How do you ladies get the area between your shoulders when you're using a gradual or self tanning lotion?? I'm actually considering one of these http://www.lotionsource.com/details/tanning_accessories_supplies/lotion_applicator_backhand.html but I wonder if there isn't an easier way!

That's an AMAZING INVENTION!!!! I was having that problem last night with reaching my back and between my shoulders its really hard doing it by yourself, luckily in the club lighting shouldnt be too noticable if we miss some spots here or there lol, but to avoid, I just use mirrors a lot, but that little back hand thing is such a good idea!

I manage to get all my back and Im not super flexable in that way. I use the back of my hand in a mitt to do some bits of my back.
It feels really arkward though so Im gonna see if that Backhand is for sale in the U.K.

I see a lot of girls using the sally hansen airbrush legs at work (and i've fallen in love with it too, its awesome) but how do you prevent it from rubbing off on your outfits? It doesn't damage them or anything but its just a pain in the ass haha..

See most girls I've known who have gotten the spray tans at salons come out looking fairly orange and not tan. I'm curious as to how one would go about getting a slightly pinkish tan? I already have a kind of pinkish skin tone, but I don't tan, I burn. And I would be worried about spray tans and stuff rubbing off on customers...

I have the same skin tone also very fair and burn easily- I love the sally hansen airbrush legs I use medium glow, but if that comes out too dark for you theres light glow (but medium glow is what I see other girls using too). I put it on at night after I shower, so by the time I get to work I've already worn PJs, and street clothes, so whatever little bit rubs off its "set" by the time I get to work. It really doesn't rub off much though, just a teeny bit on outfits when I start to sweat but never had a problem with it rubbing off custies because I don't put it on in the dressing room like I see most girls do. Especially if you don't spray your butt, you'll definitely be good- but I do spray my butt because i'm just that pastey white haha. Hope that helps!

I can't stand when girls spray that shit in the DR. My manager is supposed to have a rule about that, but its not really enforced so we have one or two girls that do it. I remember in jersey the whole dressing room would be like an orange fog.
I mean, it looks great on, I just appreciate it when girls put it on at home like sunshine... that's a great idea on how to use it w/o rubbing off on custies. If anything rubbed off on a custie at my work, we'd be in big trouble. I saw it happened to me once with a spray tan on a white button-down and I was so effing nervous the dude would notice, but he didn't and just went home, thank god.

I don't know about acne but I do know that when i spend a little time in the sun ( i am very pale and burn easily so its only like 10 mins a day) my eczema clears up not to mention you need vitamin d and you get it from sunlight can't hurt to try it a little.

If you have mild acne, it will dry up your skin somewhat temporarily and for a short time make your face look better. Also because a darker face doesn't show bright red pimples as much as a pale white one. But when I had acne (moderate to severe) and tanned my face, it would only help for a short while like I said, and then something even worse would grow under my skin. Like one of those monsters. Now that I'm on oral medication its all better, but I still don't tan my face for wrinkle reasons.
With acne I would just use a good facial self-tanner and some good lotions and potions. Unless its really bad and all over your chin, then try talk to your doctor about spironolactone, its changed my life. ;D

For blonde hair/spray tan problems, put vaseline along ur hairline before putting the shower cap thing on, makes ur hair look greasy till u wash it out and wash ur tan off but it stops the tan bleeding into the hairline.
XEN tan is amazing, i love it and is smells like marzipan yummmmmm :)

This is going to sound incredibly ignorant BUT, what is marzipan? Isn't that some kind of fruit/pie or something?

Marzipan is like the white layer they out between fruitcake and icing, i think its made from basically sugar and almond extract, it smells lovely tho, and im not one for almonds, i dont like them to eat, but xen tan smells like it and its soo much nicer than the digestive biscuit/old popcorn smell of st tropez which has permeated my brain cells over the years. Even fake bake extreme doesnt smell as nice :) x (and ur not daft, i think marzipan is mainly an english UK thing :D x )

I've tried every topical tanning product under the sun (haha), and I've tried tanning beds and stand-ups, which I enjoy for the warm, relaxing feeling and vitamin D dose. However, I'm really fair skinned, and I never seem to tan. I may get a few freckles, and a burn. I recently went to Brazil for three weeks and didn't even get a proper tan (though I did get a burn!).
However - I wanted to point out that although we know the sun and tanning beds can cause cancer, do we really know that the sprays and chemically-smelling creams are any safer? I just wonder as I slather this stuff all over myself every day - how safe is it really! I mean it smells so strong.
By the way, I've noticed that many high end products (and cheaper ones like Sally Hanson airbrush, much as I love it), really do rub off on people's clothing, especially when combined with sweat

I just started using Banana Boat Sunless Summer Color Self Tanning Lotion last week. So far i really like it. No self tanner smell, it has aloe & Vitamin C in it so my skin is calmer and smoother, and its a believable color tan. I mean i held my arm up to my daughters who has a natural tan going on and it matches. Dries really quick and i never had a streak yet.
I use to use loreal sublime self tanner last year, but it was to orange, never stayed put and had that sunless smell that doesn't go away.

^Thank you! I resorted to just using bronzer all over my face-that way don't have to worry about uneven, or making me orange or anything. Same thing with the airbrush legs-pain in the ass to do it everyday, and does rub off on some things (technically its just makeup though so comes right out) but don't have to worry about being orange, or streaky !
