Coffee: 1 me: 0
I can't do the master cleanse even if it wasn't terrible for me. The citrus will put a hole in my stomach, and I'm not the kind of person that can go without eating. The closest I can get is a 3 day juice fast, and that's only if I make the juice myself.... even then, that's pushing it.

Tea! Coffee smells and tastes like poison to me (I don't like alcohol either...go figure).

My favorites are oolong and green tea with various infusions. Ever since my SO went to a tea store and bought me loose-leaf, I've been a huge fan.

Though right now my favorite is Yogi brand Ginger.

My goal for getting off coffee was accomplished and I haven't felt the need for it. But in retrospect, I think that that cleanse is hardcore and unhealthy. Honestly I have no idea what exactly I did to my body during the cleanse, because I have been eating cleaner and more raw since then. It is too hard to tell what resulted in what. I should have tried juicing first in order to get rid of my caffeine addiction. That would have been enough. I make my own carrot juice now for breakfast if the time allows. and I drink tea - mainly rooibos.

Fresh Carrot and Apple juice is the morning is great!

Thank you for your reply.
I am very curious about the content of the paper that you wrote in regards to the cleanse being ineffective. is there another link about this on here? Can you redirect me? are there any links online that you recommend? What do you recommend as a healthy solution?

JD and charlie61 thanks for your input and posting that thread about going raw!!!

Oh good lord.

As most of you know I wrote a huge paper in school about this nonsense.

I am backing away and taking my soap box with me.

Nonsense? I'm trying to figure out how coffee and tea can be nonsense...explain?

I think she meant the master cleanse diet and I'm in 100 percent agreement with her on that one. It is nonsense.

If I can I will upload my paper. You know this shit can have you consuming a half a pound of sugar a day, and salt water flushing can perforate or damage your intestines?

A few links:

Also, Dr Ray Sahelian, who PROMOTES supplements et al VEHEMENTLY speaks out against this "diet":

"Question of the Month - The Cleansing Controversy

Q. Dear Dr. Sahelian, My wife and I love your site and info. We would like your opinion about something. We just read a book which mentions a cleansing diet consisting of:

2 Tbsp. lemon or lime juice (organic)
2 Tbsp. genuine, pure, organic maple syrup
1/10 tsp. cayenne pepper
10-12 oz. purified water

The book states this cleansing diet helps purify the liver and:

helps dissolve and eliminate toxins and congestion.
helps cleanse the kidneys and digestive system.
helps purify the glands and cells
helps eliminate unusable waste and hardened material in the joints and muscles.

What do you think?

A. There is no doubt that we are exposed to countless harmful substances in our environment - hormones, pollutants, pesticides, drugs, oxidants, toxins, and heavy metals. We are exposed to these toxins through food, water, air, and skin. And in many cases it is relatively easy to point the blame to these harmful substances for causing or aggravating certain diseases. For instance, it is clear that many inhaled pollutants can aggravate asthma symptoms. But, many people are eager to blame their symptoms to toxins even if there is no proof that they are the cause. For instance, toxins are certainly not the cause for the majority of cases of fatigue, yet some people who are tired all the time are ready to blame toxins for their condition. And then they undertake drastic steps - for instance a water or juice fast - which in some cases makes them feel even worse. And when they feel worse, they incorrectly think the reason is because toxins are being removed from their body. Most likely the reason is low caloric intake, low protein intake, muscle tissue breakdown, low glycogen stores in the liver, low blood sugar, etc.

We probably all have toxins accumulated in our system. And what is the best way to deal with them? I believe undertaking several long term measures are a better approach than drastic short term steps (although perhaps a minority of those trying a drastic diet may notice some benefits such as mental clarity or a sense of wellbeing, others may get worse). For instance, rather than fasting for a few days, I prefer reducing caloric intake to perhaps 1000 or 1200 calories a day over a period of 2 to 3 weeks. I am not convinced that any of the so called drastic “detox diets” that recommend a strict regimen of lemon juice, olive oil, apple cider vinegar, cayenne, etc, etc, are beneficial. Through all my years of medical education, I have come to realize that the body does not like going off balance too much and for too long. Our body tries to maintain homeostasis, a balanced state where everything is functioning properly. Fasting, or these drastic detox regimens alter this homeostasis, often in a harmful way. Liver glycogen stores are depleted, alterations occur in the mineral and electrolyte balance in the blood, muscle and bone tissue start breaking down, changes occur in the acid base balance, alterations occur in the fatty acid composition of cells, and immune function may be impaired.

Eating a very healthy diet, low in calories, is a better option in the long run. Eat more raw, fresh and organic fruits and vegetables, reduce dairy intake, reduce meat products, eat more whole grains, consume fish caught in the wild, drink more varieties of teas, drink fresh vegetables juice, add more herbs to your food, avoid or dramatically reduce sugar and baked goods, use some antioxidant supplements and herbs (there are many to choose from). Also, drink filtered water and wash your fruits and vegetables."

I'd trust Stanley Kubrick over bunkos like Stanley Burroughs.

"Additionally, the diet is not only unhealthy, but it is dangerous. Poor nutrition causes mild side effects like nausea, vomiting, and fatigue. However, more serious side effects include muscle breakdown and weakness, low blood sugar levels, and poor immune responses. Additionally, the Master Cleanse diet leads to binge eating, which can cause the patient to gain even more weight. If the patient has habits of overeating, there are more beneficial ways to control eating and lose weight.

Read more at Suite101: Does Master Cleanse Really Work?: The Detox Diet is Dangerous Weight Loss Method http://weight-loss-methods.suite101.com/article.cfm/does_master_cleanse_really_work#ixzz0hpI3McYj"

And directly from that last link, Dr. Marc Lawrence:

"I have personally treated a number of patients in the Emergency Room, who presented with weakness, dizziness, nausea, vomiting, and diarrhea as a result of the Master Cleanse. Contrary to popular belief these “detox” symptoms are actually a result of a build up of toxins due to glutathione depletion, dehydration and a profound metabolic acidosis. One patient, whose acidosis and dehydration did not respond to IV fluid resuscitation, required admission to the hospital."

i would never do a detox diet as i feel that it's unhealthy and medio's information only confirms this. i drink tea for a little caffeine but other than that i avoid coffee. i used to drink a lot of caffeine (including redbull-bad bad bad!!!), the results: gastritis...yes, caffeine created major health problems for me. now, when i need caffeine, i drink tea...but there are many other healthy foods that provide natural boost, but i love chai tea and have a hard time giving it up, but it doesn't irritate my stomach. because i drank so much caffeine, it ruined my stomach and had to go on pretty hardcore meds because of it...now on the occasional time i do drink coffee (i can't remember the last time i drank coffee but i do remember it giving me the runs...if i'm extremely constipated i try to eat foods with a lot of roughage but when that doesn't work i use coffee as a laxative to poop, being irregular for me causes headaches for me)

Hi Mediocrity,

thank you so (SO SO SO) much for posting the info. I really appreciate it.
I get confused with all these health claims they throw at us.

Today, i am having, lemon orange apple zinger tea with honey.

I drink tea and put sugar and milk in it. I suspect this is something I inherited from my paternal grandmother who drank tea that way (she was British). I hate coffee.

I have a pot of coffee every morning and have since I was 14-15 years old. When I was little, maybe 5 years old, my grandma used to fix me a cup of her decaf coffee in the mornings I was with her. I'd drink it black, too. So, I pretty much grew up drinking coffee, and don't plan on quitting any time soon.

Why do you want to quit drinking coffee? Sleep problems? Something else?

If you don't mind my asking, how have you kept your skin from reflecting all the caffiene consumption? I've seen your pics and you have very nice skin..My skin starts to look bad if I have too much caffiene.

Very curious...

Coffee and tea both have caffeine. So they are both bad for you. I think starting out your day with a delicious cup of decaf coffee is the best route to go. Also, there are some good decaf black tea out there in the market.

Caffeine can lead to several health complications such as high blood pressure, acidity in the stomach, etc. My advise would be to stay away from caffeine altogether whether it is in the form of tea or coffee.

but there are also teas that don't have caffeine in them, just like there's decaffeinated coffee

I love coffee!! But I am extrememly sensitive to it.

I have one cup at breakfast and occasionally another at lunch if I am really sluggish, and I only do this maybe twice a week. Coffee makes my hands shake, and I need steady hands for my day job.

So, the rest of the time, I have 1-3 cups of yerba mate, green, or black tea a day. Black tea is limited to 1-2 a day, but if I am drinking green I drink as much as I want (related to caffeine levels).

I usually add a little sugar and cream to my coffee, or a touch of honey to my tea. The rest of the day I chug ice water as constantly as possible!

And on special occasions, I will be really naughty and have a soy mocha or a frappucino. With whip :) That's like once a month.

Either water, juice, green tea, or coffee (put cinnamon in with the ground coffee before it brews-MMMMmmm). That's in order from most to least, depending on how much energy I have that day.
I try to only drink coffee when I feel dead-no energy. Maybe a couple times a week. I love it, but prefer to drink green tea or other types of tea rather than coffee.
Most days I try to skip the caffeine and drink juice and water.. but I do love caffeine-it is my only vice!
And I love any and all types of teas!! MMMmmm...

Hi daniella, good for you moving away from the coffee and caffine! As many have mentioned before me, coffee is a toxin and extremely taxing on the body. It is also highly addictive...especially to people like me!

I start my day drinking water... I try for one liter, but sometimes only get a glass or two down. Then I drink 1- 2 cups of coffee with soymilk and liquid stevia. I do not like the taste of coffee alone, so I must doctor it. I drink coffee for the high it gives me, and the motivation to work out. It does mess up my sleeping patterns, and causes me to feel more anxious...

After coffee I try to do some exercise and and then eat fresh fruit. Freshly squeezed oj is good too.
I like the clean taste of herbal and green tea. They taste excellent plain! Maybe tea would work as a transition away from the coffee? That has worked for me in the past.

^ Have you tried black teas? They have a bitterness (without sugar) that is similar to coffee. Especially something like Earl Grey or English Breakfast. You'd be able to add your soymilk and stevia to that, too. Would probably be pretty good!

^^^^ It's the only energy drink that comes with a warning label on the bottle. I don't know how it's even legal! I get high off that stuff! Chug one down, go run four miles, go lift some weights, and you will feel invincible.

Thanks. I'm fine if I don't work. But its hard on days I do, because its such a huge ritual for me to set my stuff down in the DR, get a cup of coffee from the bar, and then drink it while I get ready. It's been a ritual for me for years and years.

Ahhh the coffee and work ritual! I know this far too well! That's good that you only want to drink the coffee at work. For me it's an everyday ritual right now. Does coffee effect your skin at all? I have noticed a skin breakout, and I have been drinking coffee for a month now after a 7 month break.

No, and its probably because I only drink it at work, and I drink it black with no sugar/ sweetener. I only drink two cups at work too. After that, I switch to club soda.

I have neither! I start my day with an energy drink called Up & Go, which I LOVE and am kinda addicted to. If they weren't a bit expensive, I'd have them 3 times a day!
