This thread is super inspiring! I have been trying to slim down for a while now. I'm not large by any stretch, but I have a pesky layer of fat just wont budge. Sigh. As of now, I am doing cardio 3x a week, and lifting weights 5x a week.
I cut out sugar (not fruit sugar, but like... sugar sugar... don't know how to say it better. ha) and white flour a few months ago, and stopped adding salt to anything at all a few weeks ago (I bloat easily). I mostly eat egg whites for protein (I'm a vegetarian), and I eat a lot of tofu. I used to eat a lot of soy products but a lot of them have a ton of sodium and other weird things in them so I'm trying to parse out a few good soy-product options like soy meat crumbles, etc. Anyone have any insight on soy products?
Other than that I belong to an organic CSA so I eat organic, seasonal veggies every day (at LEAST 2 servings are greens). I also eat organic fruits.
Anyway, this thread is totally inspiring, and I will be creepin' on here keeping my eyes and ears open for good tips. Thanks ladies! :D

processed soy (which is soy 'meat' crumbles)= bad for you. tofu is ok in moderate quantities, NOT as a primary protein substitute. basically, any traditional way of preparing soy like miso is fine, but anything like soy burgers, soy cookies, etc., is really bad healthwise.
soy is just awful in so many ways, but it is cheap and so it's in tons of stuff.
you should eat the yolks of your eggs. cholesterol is almost literally part of your brain. it also neatly provides you with needed saturated fat and protein that you aren't getting from the whites. eating more saturated fat is a good way to help with fat loss. coconut oil is pretty handy in this regard for vegetarians. also butter. yay butter. less tofu, more eggs fried in butter. also leafy greens (sauteed in butter!) the butterfat provides a synergistic effect that helps you absorb all the vitamins and such even more effectively.

Sometimes I wish I could thank whole threads. There are so many awesome posts here.

I especially agree with you on the "processed" part of that (strips so many nutrients). Soy beans in their natural form are good it seems, but pre-packaged soy (as most Americans know it is not).
I've come across some different research on soy, such as the lower breast cancer rates in Asian women (who include larger amounts of soy in the diet). However, there are also claims that it increases the risk. To my understanding, soy has phytoestrogens in it (which could be a good or bad thing depending on the individual's hormone levels).

I'm curious as to how this happens.... can you elaborate, or post a link to some more info? I am intrigued......
Also, my sister, who is a third year med student, tells me to be careful eating egg yolks because one egg yolk is already about 60% of your daily recommended intake of cholesterol.

I eat egg yolks galore. I don't mind red meat cholesterol either, I'm just trying to eat less meat because I don't feel that I can get much nutrients out of sick, factory farmed animals. Like fat, I think there is a difference between the kind of cholesterol in a double whopper and an egg yolk.

I'm curious to know where you read this. I doubt eating 4-8 egg yolks a day could POSSIBLY be good for me. Especially since cheese is another vegetarian protein source, also high in cholesterol.

I was told that when you're otherwise healthy, meaning that your cholesterol isn't too high already and you are active and in shape, the cholesterol in egg yolks is fine. If you wanna eat a lot of eggs, say 4 a day, just eat two with and two without or something like that.

I think that sums it up pretty well. Here's a fairly recent review on the topic:

Abstract
For much of the past 40 years, the public has been warned away from eggs because of a concern over coronary heart disease risk. This concern is based on three observations: 1. eggs are a rich source of dietary cholesterol; 2. when fed experimentally, dietary cholesterol increases serum cholesterol and; 3. high serum cholesterol predicts the onset of coronary heart disease. However, data from free-living populations show that egg consumption is not associated with higher cholesterol levels. Furthermore, as a whole, the epidemiologic literature does not support the idea that egg consumption is a risk factor for coronary disease. Within the nutritional community there is a growing appreciation that health derives from an overall pattern of diet rather than from the avoidance of particular foods, and there has been a shift in the tone in recent dietary recommendations away from "avoidance" messages to ones that promote healthy eating patterns. The most recent American Heart Association guidelines no longer include a recommendation to limit egg consumption, but recommend the adoption of eating practices associated with good health. Based on the epidemiologic evidence, there is no reason to think that such a healthy eating pattern could not include eggs.

I haven't read all of the posts so maybe this was already said-if you don't like eating veggies it may be wise to invest in a juicer-the enzymes in fruit and vegetable juice break down after just 30 minutes, meaning that the juices we get from the store, no matter what they say, are not that nutritionally valuable anymore...same goes, unfortunately, for powders...I LOVE my juicer, I even juice broccoli:). Does taste like crap, but hey:)
And don't cut out all the fat-I see so many people doing this, and it's really not healthy. I don't mean bad fats. But eggs do not have a sufficient amount of fat, and fish, if it's really lean, does give you great protein but not a lot of fat. It aids weight loss if you add a little more healthy fat to your diet.
A very interesting diet (more of a lifestyle) I did for a while was the "paleo" diet. You eat fruits, veggies, meat, eggs, some nuts. You cut out all gluten, dairy, grains. I did this when I started at a crossfit gym were they advertised this type of eating, so I thought I would try. It made me feel very healthy, my skin got great, I had great energy. Although I am divided on the topic of cutting out carbs. I think it can be a crock of sh...Of course processed sugars are bad, however, there are so many good carbs out there (potatoes, healthy bread,...) that are necessary for our body to function optimally, but people cut them out of their diet. Also, people that cut out carbs and are prone to depression will unfortunately make it worse...I think balance is definitely key.

TERRIBLE!!! I have been doing terrible...junk food galore. But lately all the junk just tastes like plastic to me, but my diet(I'm guessing) makes me so lethargic that all I want to do is grab the quickest, easiest food I can grab(junk) and sit on the internet all night. Last night though I felt so physically shitty from all of the junk and my skin has been getting icky...I knew I had to stop quickly.
Today I didn't do too great, I bought mini apples, sardines, carrots, about 1/4 of a watermelon and two protein bars(not good but I was in a pinch) to eat while at work. Backfired though because when I went to eat my sardines I realized that they had a hole in the can and the olive oil had leaked all over my last apple...so I couldn't finish my apples or have the sardines, the sardines would have been very filling. So I went to eat my watermelon and it was disgusting! Like biting into rubber. Had to throw it out. So now I'm at work starving....I ordered a salad from the place next door, not good. None of the ingredients in it are TOO bad for you, but they're not great for you either. It was basically an empty filler. Well I bet there was sugar galore in the Italian dressing because as soon as I finished my salad I had the worst sugar craving so I got a bag on m&m's out of the vending machine....noooooooooooooo.
When I went to the store for tonight's food though I got salmon and broccoli that I'm about to cook right now, and ripe raspberries for dessert. I'm going to try to kill my taste for sweets by the 19th....I have to.

You can do it! The hardest is the first 3 days. Honestly, the only way I did it was by having someone shame me into it. My trainer works at the front desk of the hotel I'm staying at, and I'm the very first room to the right. Anything I buy food wise, he sees and lectures me about. That's the only thing that forced me to start eating better.
I hate it when you plan to eat healthy, but then it for some reason fucks up. I once brought a Banana with me to work for a short 4 hr. shift and the stupid thing ended up getting dislodged in my snack bag and bruised so bad it was mush. That was enough to derail me to the point of ordering chicken wings and fries in it's place. Ughhhhhhh........Anyway, I empathize.
Good luck with tomorrow! New day!

Do you have a coffee grinder Zin? You can make your bean dips if you're looking for a creamy snack sub. I put dry beans (black, kidney, chick peas, etc..) in there like I would coffee beans, make a powder, then mix with olive oil (and some other ingredients if I feel like it). I get creamy cravings too, but this really has helped me so much. (Plus you can store the beans dry, so you don't have to worry about them going bad).

You might laugh, but I love those Shredded Mini Wheats. They have no sugar, no yeast, and are the healthiest cereal in a box I've found. They're like crackers to me.

For me... I can follow the routine, get into the habbit...
But once I've lost the weight, and look/feel good... It turns into a love/hate relationship...
Part of me LOVES the feeling you get from eating so healthy... the other part goes "Are you fucking kidding? You're really never going to drink another Coke?" Next thing I know... My boyfriend has to keep his drinks out of my reach or they're down my throat as soon as he looks the other way. :P
Off topic...
It's so weird to see a REAL diet thread on SW... Normally I feel like they go like this: http://vids.myspace.com/index.cfm?fuseaction=vids.individual&videoid=39006533
"So let me get this straight. One really big meal a day and then we go to sleep. No paper towels but a little bit of bread because we're not nazis and as many popsicles as we want?"
