I'm addicted to the Dr. Phil show. I watch him at least twice a day. Once at 4:00pm, then again at 4:00am, sometimes more often. He really annoys me, but I still watch his show everyday. I never thought about the irony until just now.

Ok, I know a hot girl when I see one. I'm all for sexy ass pics of hot girls on the interwebz, but when my first reaction is "Oh God what happened to your face?" (ah la Stewie style http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pm-NC83U-kA) you're doing it wrong! I'm so tired of my fb being inundated by "photographers" shoots with "models".

My (highly ethical) company won't support opposite-sex domestic partnerships through insurance benefits. They support marriages, and they support same-sex domestic partnerships. But they won't support my relationship, even though I object to and abstain from marriage for political reasons. I understand their reasoning, but it still blows. I have (literally) the best insurance available for $50/month, and I have no way to share that with my partner, even though our relationship is as serious as it gets. :(

It sucks indeed but it is pretty much the same everywhere. Most companies pay for most of the cost of these plans, so they have a lot of reasons to try to limit who is covered. Also, any two people can claim that they are in a domestic partnership and, while your situation is obviously valid, there are plenty of people out there who would probably try to take advantage if companies subsidized it for anyone who single employees claimed were domestic partners.

Beyond the insurance issue though, there are lots of other ways in which the decision not to get married will limit your partner's rights. If you should become incapacitated and need immediate medical decisions made, he would probably not be allowed to make those decisions. The same holds true in other venues where spouses are viewed as the next of kin or otherwise authorized to act for each other. And if you have kids, hospitals and schools generally treat unmarried Dads as third-class citizens and often will not let them sign anything relating to the child.

Picked the worst month or so to stop going to clubs. Been working on low-paying freelance stuff and my classes, and now rent's due and my boyfriend only got paid for training, not the full week he worked. Considering lending him my heels and telling him to go make some cash money, 'cause I feel fat today and our cat's food bowl ain't gonna fill itself.

Agreed. While I understand those who don't believe in marriage the fact is that marriage is an insurance policy so to speak. I am old fashioned but would never have a child unless I was married to the dad. Unmarried dads do not have the same right as married dads (who have the same rights as the woman).

I do support companies offering same sex benefits but not to opposite sex partners because the opposite partners have the choice to marry and many gay couples don't. Sounds mean and offensive but if we allow that where does it stop?

The reason I don't want to get married is because of my loyalty to the LGBTQIA community, actually. As an asexual woman especially, I'd feel like a total fraud if I became part of an institution that actively discriminates against people. Yes, what you said does sound a bit naive and insensitive. There are definitely plenty of sides to this issue, but marriage is not an option for me as it exists currently.

This will be my last comment on this issue in this thread. Just hard for me to hear comments like that without responding.

That actually makes sense and I can see why this means so much to you. However I see it as something a little different and I really do feel for people in your situation (and I know a few)but I worry more for those who have kids because that opens up a can of worms. However, if we allow people who are unmarried to get benefits, where else will it go? can I claim my cat as my "domestic partner". I do support gay marriage though and if anyone wants to get married they should be allowed to. Btw I don't like how society discriminates against unmarried people too but unless we change laws it won't change.

I can't help but respond to this.

I see your point, for sure. It becomes harder to make distinctions between people who are actually committed to each other and those who aren't.

That said, heterosexuals can get married the day they meet...and they can get prenuptials (i.e. they can engage in a contract and then actually negotiate the contract to be however they want it to be). Same-sex couples and those who mindfully abstain from marriage cannot do this.

I am also rather offended by your comment "Can I claim my cat as my domestic partner?" Are you fucking seriously comparing human relationships to bestiality???

My point is that once we start allowing domestic partnerships for insurance and benefits someone could claim their cat, or their computer or anything. I could be living with someone I am not dating (for instance let's say a gay man)and claim him as my partner. I'm not making light of domestic partnerships just that it can be a downward spiral. That's why I have no issue with allowing gay partners to claim each other because in most states they still can't marry, but do with heterosexual partners who do have the choice to marry.

I think you are taking this way too seriously amd I understand where you are going, but employers can't be forced to pay for every employees choices. That means less money for other things, like say hiring people. The fact of the matter is heterosexual couples have the choice to marry so they shouldn't get benefits. Same sex yes.
