I'm really starting to hate the general public. WTF ever happened to basic manners and politeness? Day before yesterday I got my sleeve finished and was killing time before picking hubby up at the airport (10 day tour break, SO happy about the monkey sex! WOO HOO!) at Barnes and Noble with my t-shirt sleeve rolled up, reading a magazine, and some random girl - knowing she was within earshot and just loud as can be - tells her friend "girls like that who cover theirselves (yes, she said theirselves) in tattoos are just trashy." So I looked at her and she SAT DOWN NEXT TO ME and told me "You know it's true, no one will ever take you seriously and you're gonna be minimum wage for the rest of your life."
So, since she invaded MY personal space, uninvited, I patted her on her fat knee and said "Thank you very much for your unsolicited opinion of me, I'll be sure to let my rock star husband and wealthy design clients know that according to your little fat self I'm trashy, unimportant and minimum wage." Then I stood up to walk away, turned around and said "Jealousy is a sickness, I hope you get better soon." I thought her friend was going to piss herself laughing while she sat there with her cock sucker hanging open.
I swear to god, there are days when I want to wipe out the general population because they are so mannerless. And you know what's worse, I know she wouldn't have said a damned thing if my husband had been there. These people are like peta - it's way easier to throw red paint over little old defenseless ladies wearing fur coats than it is to go after the big burly biker wearing a leather vest.
Rant over, time for coffee . . .
Good for you! I had a situation years ago (I've written about it here)where a friend and me went stripper clothes shopping and were sitting in the mall food court where a woman starting calling us names. We weren't doing anything except looking at what we bought (we were both new to stripping)and this woman started calling us names. Then there was this time I went out with my then boyfriend and his friend who was also a stripper. This elderly couple randomly called us whores and him a pimp. Yes she looked like a stereotypical dancer (bleach blonde hair, huge breasts, etc)but wasn't dressed sleazy.

There are a few commercials with senior citizens that make me laugh. One is this guy for a hoveround (it's a scooter)and he says "I think it was the end of the line for me and time to go into a nursing home". There are also the "I've fallen and I can't get up" commercials, including one with a woman who doesn't look that old. I am a horrible person for laughing at these (but they are really funny :D).

I'm going to have to look for that. There's one where this woman says she was on the floor for days and that she hoped her kids didn't see her like that. If her kids would visit more she wouldn't be on the floor now would she? then there's one where this woman is making faces while on the floor.

So ready to get this tooth pulled! The wisdom tooth is trying to come in behind it and I can feel the slight pressure it's causing. Most likely not impacted YET, but I really want this bad tooth out as fast as possible to make room for the healthy new tooth. I wonder how much my mother is going to give me when I see her... She seriously owes me for all the money I've loaned her and helped her make.
I wonder what hair color my FWB likes. I know he told me once, but that was three years ago. I REALLY want to do my hair purple, but I feel like it would be in my better interest, work-wise, to dye the blonde back to my natural color, and then just tint it a bit redder.

No, Kelly, you're not horrible for laughing at those ads, mainly because of the sheer absurdity of the ads themselves. (Both the sheer volume of ads, and the scope of the type of products that ads are made for.) If I were you, I'd be more concerned about being identified as someone who watches channels/programs that cater to the senile crowd. :-X
As for the ads, does anyone else feel that advertising as surpassed the saturation/annoyance threshold ? Of all the ads watched during your favorite shows/sporting events, how many triggered a purchase decision by you ?

Every couple of years, my SO goes through a month or two of intense depression. He didn't go in to work two days last week because of his debilitating anxiety / depression...I ended up calling his boss and explaining the situation so he wouldn't lose his job. FMLA doesn't kick in until he's worked there for a year, so we're pretty much banking on his employer being understanding about everything. I feel very lucky that I could support him financially if he were to lose his job.
Times like these are rough, but without the sour, the sweet ain't as sweet.

I've thought about this. I actually think ads do have an effect on people, but it's more subconscious than anything. It just makes you aware of what the name brands are, and of what people buy when they have the money for it.
I used to watch stuff on Hulu pretty often, and I remember they would show the same fucking commercials over and over (namely, commercials for Dove products). I was so fucking annoyed by them. And yet the next time I went to the store, I ended up buying a Dove product. I could convince myself that it's because of the ingredient list or some bullshit, but honestly, watching those commercials probably had some effect on my purchase decision. It's pretty crazy. I've read studies about that.
Ads also have a strong cultural pull. When everyone is aware, in the collective conscience, of which companies can afford to advertise, then we want to show other people we have this awareness by purchasing brands that others recognize. Behold the phenomena of the fashion industry, the alcohol industry, etc.

I watch a lot of classic tv shows so that's why I see those ads. I don't watch a lot of normal tv but when I do I see ads for cars mostly. Yes sometimes I see an ad for a product and want to buy it. This is sad but true but everytime a music infomercial (usually Time-Life)comes on I watch and sometimes yes I want to buy. Many years ago I saw an ad for a CD called alternative rock of the 80's and I really wanted that, though I had all the songd.

I've thought about this. I actually think ads do have an effect on people, but it's more subconscious than anything. It just makes you aware of what the name brands are, and of what people buy when they have the money for it.
The ads have an enormous effect on people.
Highly repetitive ads take advantage of a flaw in our intuitive recollection process. This makes us much more likely to buy things that we've seen before, even if we've seen them only once, and even if we don't remember where we saw it, when or why.
The reason is that the mind confuses the familiar with the good. This concept is called "cognitive ease." Even if we've seen a name or a brand or a product only once, the mind will easily pick out that name or brand or product from dozens or hundreds of unfamiliar ones.
Here's where it gets really weird.
Because we evolved in small, trusted groups surrounded by multiple competing and often hostile groups, we have a spectacular intuitive sense of "ours" vs. "theirs." When we have seen something before, the brain confuses that familiarity with "good" and "reliable." In other words, you have an immediate sense of something being positive simply because it's cognitively easier for you to recall it.
This even happens when people are exposed to a random name once, and then are asked several weeks later how they feel about this person (who they have never met or talked to -- only the name was shown to them, and then, only once.) They report feeling positive about that person.
The psychologist Larry Jacoby, who wrote a study article on this entitled, "Becoming Famous Overnight," summarizes it like this: "The experience of familiarity has a simple but powerful quality of 'pastness' that seems to indicate that it is a direct reflection of prior experience. This quality of pastness is an illusion."
Sorry for the geek-out, but I thought you might be interested in the science already done on this.

Exactly what I was thinking!
On my mind now- I've been utterly in love with him since we met when I was still a kid. I told him how I felt a few years ago, and he's dropped hints here and there ever since that he has feelings for me too even though he SAYS he doesn't believe love really exists. God, does he fuck me right, but only once have we MADE LOVE. I wish we could again... I want to drop the L-bomb again, but I know I shouldn't because it would only further complicate his already confusing life. But all that matters to me right now is that I'm close to him. He knows how I feel, even if I won't say it. Even though it causes me a lot of pain, I am happy just to be able to have what I do with him right now. Does that make me crazy?

Yes that Wilford Brumley diabetes commercial annoys me to no end. Then there are the incontinence commercials, including the one for Depends which uses Green Onions by Booker T and the MGs. My dad loves that song (and the group)but I have to remind him that means he's old. lol. The absolute worst commercial I have seen related to this is some sort of funeral commercial. In this one they play sappy music while the voiceover says "why did he have to leave me alone with a young boy?". It then talks about burial and cremation options. It's worse than it sounds. Probably the sappiest commercials are the ones for animals, I have to change the dial for those.
What I find interesting is how I worked in marketing/advertising/public relations in the past and when I watch a show I can usually see who it is marketed to by the commercials. When I watch a tv show and I see a lot of car commercials I notice it is marketed to a younger hipper crowd but all of these old people commercials make me realize I watch a lot of older shows.
