AJ- Thanks for the response, and I do understand what you're saying. Maybe I need to do a little clarifying on my theory and why I suggest these things.
"Recession panic" advertising- I don't mean to say IGNORE it. You should never IGNORE an issue this big and real. When I say stop reporting it, I really mean to do it much less frequently because it IS advertising. Remember the crack epidemic? Initially, almost no one except hardcore junkies knew crack even existed. Then, almost simultaneously, every major news network did a report on crack- "it's the new drug sweeping across the nation", "its effects are more intense than powdered cocaine", "it's more addictive", "it's being sold cheaper". To a non-user, these things sound terrible. To an addict? Those are SELLING POINTS! In a nation that's already TERRIFIED of the GR, basically making us fear-addicts, hearing about the GR every single time you turn on the TV is like that crack addict hanging out in a drug lair. By reducing our exposure (reporting once a week on updates, instead of every thirty minutes) and hopefully hearing GOOD news once in a while, like a new business coming to town or nearby city increasing their employment, we're not constantly having our metaphorical crack dealer waving our next hit in our faces.
Finding new jobs at lower pay- yes, I'm aware that everyone is taking jobs at lower pay than they're used to now. That's just a fact of what happens when you are desperate for work and what you normally do isn't available. Because of current limitations on where I can work, I now have first hand experience of this fact. But what I have noticed is that just because these wages are lower than what new hire-ons are used to, the wages themselves are not lower. Most businesses would rather be somewhat understaffed than have to pay the extra hands, and will hyper limit their hiring. What I meant by "new hires at lower wages", I meant hire new staff at the legal $7.25/hr instead of hiring only two of the six you actually need at $8.50/hr. Does the idea SUCK? Hell yeah. But I honestly believe that it would HELP, even though it won't solve the problem.
Green industry- I'm aware that "green" is more about the green than it is the earth, with the exception of individuals who go legit eco on their own (using herbs instead of pharma, windows instead of lights, growing their own organics, etc). I've never deluded myself to that fact. When I brought up "green", I primarily meant in those individualist ways, like smaller and/or multi-family/generation homes, population control, etc. Doing things more in the old school way of "smaller, reasonable" instead of "bigger, better" and more local. Though I do think green energy is a good idea.
Tariffs- When I mentioned tariffs, I did so on the note of solar because several American businesses have gone bankrupt paying back-payments on these tariffs, and many closed their doors before they were even officially open. It put a lot of people out of jobs and slowed energy independence, even if only temporarily. Does that mean that ALL tariffs are a bad idea? Certainly not. But they SHOULD BE better thought out. China, our number one supplier and almost sole target of the solar cell tariffs? Yeah, we're skating on thin ice with them to begin with. Suddenly throwing up the tariff like that has them MONDO PISSED. There should have been more discussion about it before just suddenly saying "yeah, those solar cells you've been getting for $100 since Jan are now gonna cost you an EXTRA $250 each, and you have to pay for every single one you've gotten this year, not just the ones you buy after today." Cautiously implementing tariffs on the proper goods WILL increase jobs on our own soil, no doubt. I was just pointing out that particular, improperly executed tariff as a setback.
GR vs GD- Perhaps I was just misunderstood on this point and/or the link wasn't viewed. I openly stated that they had similar starts and are basically the same thing, even if one is worse than the other. The link I posted actually mentions, as you did, that the measure is different now. The closest thing to a "social program" in the 30s was some rich lady tossing coins in a homeless man's cup or giving clothes she just didn't feel like wearing anymore to the local church, IF she was feeling generous enough to even care, or your friend offering you a loaf of stale bread as payment for working a day in his failing bakery. There are lots of things today that make the GR look more like a dip than like the GD, but this "dip" will most likely be referred to in the history books as the "Second Great Depression."
As for changing soon or else- totally agree. I think we're hitting the tipping point. Not to be a Doom's Day advocate or anything, but we are coming up on the end of the long count. Historically, natural and cultural disasters happen on or around the day that the long count rolls over. It's a rather common belief amongst a sector of anthropologists, archeologists, etc that three major floods (including the biblical flood) occurred around a long count roll over. Around another (or maybe it was the same one), a new and entirely unique culture with no history of evolving from a preceding culture suddenly appears in the Western Hemisphere. Aliens? Doubtful. "Atlanteans"? Maybe. But then again, these disasters can vary a couple hundred years to either side of the roll over, since it is 5 millennia long. Maybe the USA actually IS that global disaster, since we're supposedly the world's greatest super power. Maybe whatever the disaster is will happen after our generations are dead. But maybe this recession could be the beginning of the end...
Or not. We'll probably find a way to weasel out of this and cause even more mischief, as is the ways of humanity.

Then there is the Washington, D.C. area. Did you know that the unemployment in Northern Virginia right outside D.C. is about 3%? In Alexandria, the labor pool is completely tapped out and businesses can’t find people for professional office jobs. All the cars are new, the housing market never really collapsed and nobody dare talk about the fact that there is no economic pain in the Washington D.C. area in this political season.
Hmm... I really don't know anything about the Virginia side of the Metro area, but the immidiate metro areas on the MD side of DC are extremely wealthy areas and have actually zoned out the poorer classes. Bethesda seems to have, imho, totally eradicated anything below the upper middle class-for example. It's scary, really.

Working for myself hasn't gone anywhere yet; I haven't been able to find capital to get any of my projects going and many of my personal skills I'm having a hard time translating into income. I've not been idle; I've tried a few different things. So far not to much avail - most of my skill set revolves around sales and people are laying off sales forces, not hiring or outsourcing. I had a good gig toward the end of 2010 as an IC outside rep for a medical billing and collections group. I was very optimistic - until I got ripped off on a huge commission (lets just say that the residuals on that ONE SALE we would still be getting by on) and in the course of trying to get it back learned that the company was owned by a husband/wife, the sales director was the wife's sister, and the guy over me who stole my huge deal was that ladies son. For some reason, my claim that he robbed me never went anywhere. I quit, and the information I spread to others caused 3 of their top reps to leave at the same time, lol. Turns out I wasn't the only one getting scammed out of my good sales.
Anyway, I AM trying. Also trying to get one or three of my books finished; Amazon pays very good royalties (70%) to independent e-book authors. So far it's a very slow process, lol. That and the book I referenced earlier is amazingly good and frankly did a lot of what I was going to do, and now I'm worried that I'll be the copycat, LMAO!!
As for the economy thing - DJ, Kelly - I for one am not going to make it a partisan thing DJ; I don't know WHAT to do this election. I have no faith in Obama, and I'm convinced he's outright owned by certain interests. I think Romney is still a somewhat independent entity; but I don't think he has the vision necessary to get us out of this. Regardless, congress is in various pockets, so the president only matters so much.
Kelly - you are dead on. All the "issues" we're so used to hearing about, from women's rights to gay rights to abortion to Israel and so on, are distractions. If you look at the last several presidencies and what has gone on with international trade agreements and other large-scale issues that nobody in America pays any attention to, which party is in office doesn't mean shit. They've all been following the same agenda on the whole. It is bad enough that I get closer and closer to the tin-hat types with each passing day; it's getting harder and harder to believe that there hasn't been intentional misleading of the public in media and beyond; even into our education system. The hole system seems set up to make us obedient, dependent sheep, and the more you look around the more obvious it is. Then pit us against each other on "issues" while you take away our real rights and sell off our economy to global finance houses and the like - we're too busy starting bar fights about gay marriage to be bothered with protesting the fake 2-party system and take our government back. It's working beautifully. :(
Agreed. What you have posted is spot on, and the fact is neither party cares. During Obama's presidency he signed several trade agreements, notably with Panama and Colombia that will hurt the economy even more and he wants (or did, I'll have to look)increase visas for all different types of jobs, claiming there is a shortage. The reality is on many fields there is NO shortage, it's just an excuse to hire someone cheaper than an American will work. In a few cases they just want more people from other countries (especially poor countries)to emigrate here to increase diversity. I say bs because we just can't and shouldn't be allowing people with no skills coming here. It's not just Obama, it happened more during Bush's presidency than anyone else's. Let's not forget that Clinton signed NAFTA which cost several thousand American jobs.
I can relate to the whole outsourcing and visa thing probably better than most because my skills are either going overseas or going to viased workers. I am a in technology based field (instructional design)that is increasingly becoming freelance or outsourced and viased. That's the sad reality of this. However, in the midst of all of this I found that I am a fantastic teacher while training people and am going back to school to become a teacher. Granted, teachers are being laid off, but I am checking the private schools and many people are still doing well. Also, teaching is for the most part a non outsourced and non viased job though at the college level there are many visaed workers. For me it won't take long. Have you considered switching fields, maybe going back to school? I know several people who checked into physical therapy and had jobs waiting for them. I considered speech therapist because there are shortages in this.

I agree. Upper Wisconsin Avenue in Bethesda today looks exactly like Rodeo Drive in Beverly Hills. Exactly. The only thing that's missing are the chauffeured Bentleys and Rolls. Oh, and the ghost-thin 60-year-old grannies with tiny dogs.
New economic data that came out last week revealed that seven of the country's ten most affluent counties are in the Washington D.C. area, including 4 of the top 5 (Loudoun, Fairfax, Arlington and Howard -- Montgomery County is actually 10th).
The primary reason for this concentration of affluence is that the area has by far the highest percentage of college graduates of any area in the country. But behind that reality is the fact that the federal government dumps hundreds of billions of dollars into the local economy which attracts the college graduates and that in turn creates the affluence.
The prime mover is the federal government, and that's a little disheartening from an innovation and jobs-creation standpoint.

Come on, come on, come on! I can't wait for the freaking month to be over so I can move on up to a 14g! If I had a taper set (too damn expensive and moving too fast to justify buying them one at a time, and I'd have to order them online for a set) I would jump from 16 to 12, but I'm "dead stretching" by just shoving the next size through once the last one is healed. But shoving isn't really the right word in my case, since they slip through as easily as a normal earring. Going from regular earrings to the 18g was completely fine insertion, just got a little itchy and tender for the first 48 hours. Month and a half to two months later, when one of the 18s started slipping out on its own every night, I moved up to the 16s. Those were just as easy to insert, only a little warm for about 6 hours.
Working up to a 00g is going to take sooooooo long. But going one at a time over the course of 1-2 months between helps maintain skin elasticity, so I probably won't need corrective surgery if I ever decide to take them out again. Which I'm not. Mod4Lyf! Though, for anyone with gauges, do you guys have any problems switching within 1-2 sizes for like 24 hours? Part of my "modified for life" plan means finding suitable jewelry should I remarry. I've already got my sights set on a style of 00g for the ceremony where I won't be wearing white, but I'm thinking about bone which usually only goes as high as 2g for the formal reception the next day. (long story on why I plan to do ceremony and reception on two consecutive days, and why any candidates have to agree) I'm thinking of going 00g for ceremony, 0g opalite for the first half of the reception day, then 2g for the formal half of the reception. Would I have any noticeable gaps around the 0g and 2g if I wait a few hours in between each, or issues sticking my 00g back in during the honeymoon?
Naida
10-03-2012, 01:48 PM
Most likely, yes. 0 to 2 is a fairly big jump.
When I was sizing down I had to flat out stop wearing jewelry for a week + and even then I could only wear VERY LIGHT silicone/bone jewelry or the weight produced notable gaps.
Thanks for the response, Desu! Considering that I'm nowhere near marriage, this is something that's been haunting me with my planning to permanently modify. I'm thinking of wearing a hanging set of polymer clay 00g for the ceremony and taking them out afterward. The next morning wearing double flare 0g opalite plugs for the first half of the reception, but taking them out for a few hours while I get ready for the formal half. For the formal, wearing a pair of bone 2g. Sound like problems?
