Mother nature, please stop punishing us tri-state area folks with miserable weather. It is straight up misery out here. :( We already get snow storms. Now yearly hurricanes & a one time earthquake?? We're not use to this...

I feel so bad for the people who are literally freezing to death in their own homes bc power hasn't been back on.

Not to in any way make light of what you're saying, but am I to believe that people are actually freezing to DEATH rather than... I dunno, like, laying a large pan on some tinfoil in the middle of a room and burning some shit? Cuz if it's "make an illegal fire for warmth or DIE", sorry fire marshal, but I'm not gonna DIE.

^ Old people die of the cold every winter here because they can't afford the energy bills. The unit price went up again this year. This is my one unchanging aim in life... to have a wealthy retirement so I don't fucking freeze in my own home.

Rick, I'd like to know too, but there have been some nasty things lately here and I watch what I say now. Just too many nasty things happening between the scenes (and the people involved haven't posted in awhile).

These 5k posts are going to take a long time to delete.
I almost with I could delete the posts and keep the 4k 'thanks' to lend to my credibility... but I guess it doesn't matter since I'm not giving advice or contributing anything useful anymore.

Posting thousands of times does not inherently mean your posts are always important or useful.

And since certain people regularly thank each other for putdowns, snotty comebacks, and sneezing, the thanks don't mean diddly.

I've noticed that the drama queens always have to make a big stink and post bullshit 'Grand Exits' like this.

ETA--this thread is temporarily closed. It will be re-opened after people calm down and stop posting about people getting points, etc.

Wonder if those thanks are against the rules....

I've been looking back through posts and see places where even other mods used the "thanks" button as though it were a "like" button on fb. I'm gonna guess you're safe.

 Exactly, Avery! The "rules and stuff" is where you can learn what is and isn't cool to do. Frankly, half of the questionable stuff that's posted belongs in a pm. That's what the private mail is for, having private talks that may be too sensitive or upsetting to either party or to the board in general. The board isn't a place for that kind of exchange any more than you'd rent a billboard to confront or argue with someone but private mail is perfect. I highly recommend it because it gets straight to the person you want to confront instead of the other indirect method. Also, it's a fair and level field where both sides can be heard without manipulating the membership to your cause and trying to use bullying instead of reason. 'Might Makes Right' on a message board leads to anarchy where anti-social cliques simply gang post their insults on a thread for a page or two and derail the thread completely to their agenda instead of the Original Poster's agenda.

For a great example of this phenomenon, check out this entry from Urban Dictionary: http://www.urbandictionary.com/define.php?term=message+board+clique

2. Atlus.com Message Boards 115 up, 21 down

Poorly moderated message board for the video game company Atlus.

Members consist of arrogant, childish elitists whose love of relatively obscure niche market Japanese RPGs has created a high school-caliber clique of virginal losers completely oblivious to how bad they make the fans look. Constant trolling and flame wars are the norm. Posts about who should be banned and attacks on people who are -at best- tame by comparison to the popular members are common. 90% of each thread devolves into "random humor" and inside jokes and/or circle jerks. Popularity is based on who you make fun of and reject and, who you accept and never question -both of which, are determined by the high post counters.

Moderators are more concerned with being viewed as "cool" by the small group of attention whoring popular members while enforcing said clique-minded mobbing until no longer personally entertaining.(snip)

Unlike on that ill-fated site, we care more about the membership as a whole than any individual or group.

Here's another entry that also basically covers the phenomenon: http://www.urbandictionary.com/define.php?term=forum%20clique

1. forum clique 15 thumbs up

A small group of people on a forum who are disruptive, rude and annoying to the other members. Most often, there are two or more members of the forum clique who are "posting pals" and reply to each other ad nauseam. Then, their followers feel they have enough balls to get in on the action and gang up on newer or weaker members. People who don't agree with their views are flamed, harassed and most often driven out, usually at the expense of the site itself. This behavior is seen on forums with little to no moderation or where the mods themselves are part of the clique. There's usually a spineless or non-caring administrator who allows this behavior. (snip)

So when wondering why posts are deleted, when members get points, it's best to consider the long term posting habits of the poster(s) involved and all of the actions that may have gone on behind the scenes that are never shared. It's kinda like a boyfriend who says "that girl is crazy and obsessed with me", then later you find he's told her the same about you to serve his larger agenda.

Alright. I said I would reopen this thread when the drama died down.

So it was decided to ignore the reason I closed the thread, and not wait for me to reopen it. Well maybe not such a big deal.

But I meant what I said. And I don't appreciate seeing the same issues brought up--albeit indirectly--that caused the original thread to be closed.

About the fucking 'thanks' button. I understand that the rule stating that 'thanks' are to be awarded only for 'useful and informative posts' has long ago become absolutely meaningless. Not such a big deal either.

If we were to truly award points for the violation of this rule, half the forum would be banned by now. I could certainly see letting the untold thousands of 'thanks' for tits and ass pictures slide. Or the 'thanks' for the funny jokes. Or even the thousands of mutual asskissing 'thanks', such as 'Wow you rock!', 'You are always right about everything you ever post no matter what.', or maybe 'You are by far the hottest SW member there could ever possibly be.'

Meaningless, trivial, certainly not 'useful and informative'--but possibly fun for the 'thankers' and the 'thankees'. No big deal.

But when I see people thanking each other for 'Shut up', 'You're being a bitch again', 'This forum sucks', etc.? Which has happened hundreds, if not thousands of times?

Or best of all, for 'Why am I being pointed just because I broke the rules for the 100th time, and the mods finally got tired of all the reports and drama--after all, I've been 'thanked' several thousand times for telling my friends how totally awesome they are at the slightest opportunity?'

Well, enough is enough. I don't care if a few of the mods use the 'thanks' button as though it was the 'Like' button on Facebook. That does not justify the use of the 'thanks' button by others for egging on rude behavior*. So knock it off.

I will reopen this thread when the drama has had a chance to die down. No need for yet another clone. ETA--Or for thanking this post.

;D

* ETA again--I know it wasn't being done in this little clone thread. But it was clearly being brought up in relation to previous abuse. And also clearly, the moderation of 'thanks abuse' was being indirectly criticized, in the wrong place and the wrong time. Why else bring it up?
