And what kinds of cardio at what intensity/duration?

I thought I couldn't possibly lose my belly fat, but then I started working out 5 days a week for 30 minutes, pure cardio, and lost it in the first month. Incredible. (I think going gluten free also helped, but from your results, it sounds like cardio might be mostly responsible!)

I don't always work out that often. Now I just maintain by working out once a week. (Plus raw diet)

^What cardio did you do? I desperately want to lose mine though everyone looks at me like i'm nuts when I say it..yes, i am thin..but, it would make me feel better I guess if i were more toned and didnt have my stupid hips. I've been working so much (which i know is technically working out also) though that I dont even HAVE 5 days a week to work out- where did you fit the time in?

My workout routine:
I go running at least 3 days a week, I average 4 days a week. I run about 4-5 miles at a fast pace (80%). Afterwards I do lots and lots of stretching and a short plyometric workout (high knees running, butt kicks, lunges, sprints, skipping, and a couple others that are kinda hard to describe).

Until I was told from this forum I was doing too many crunches I used to do a variety of crunches (for lower and upper abs), and do anywhere from 100-300 crunches. Instead I do a rep of squats with weights and a couple reps of arm exercises.

I honestly don't think its my workout though because when I was a competitive distance runner I ran 6 days a week, a min. of 7 miles. Most days were at 100% too. Also I did 500 crunches and 100 pushups everyday, and free weights 1 day a week. Back then I struggled to eat enough calories because my metabolism was on fire! And my stomach looks exactly the same!

Okay. I am calling a nutritionist tomorrow.

Thank you all so much!

Hm, running isn't awesome for me due to my knees, and I dont have access to a gym..anyone have suggestions? Also what kind/how many crunches? Sorry if i'm threadjacking!

Oh I didn't see you post sunshine. I only work 4 days a week so I have the time. I've found a running buddy really helps! We usually go in the middle of the day. I do weights and abs in the morning as soon as I wake up. I used to have issues with running so I got these shoes and they helped so much! And made my calves super sexy. http://www.vibramfivefingers.com/products/index.cfm

You're not threadjacking because it sounds like we're in the same boat! If you ever want to do online workout accountability just PM me.

^^those shoes help? I've been wanting to try those barefoot shoes for a while because they look comfy. Im really prone to shin splints :(.

I cannot emphasize enough how much they helped. I wasn't running for a long time due to knee and hip problems, got the shoes and the first 2 weeks were hell and now I'm increasing my mileage. I used to only do 1 mile and be in pain with normal running shoes, now I am up to 5 1/2 and I think if I could get my running partner up to it I'd like to do 7 miles. They have really saved my legs. Also, since they don't have a heel they strenghten your calves and stretch you achilles tendon, which is basically like undoing the damage high heels do.

I've posted sooo many times on here about how great they are, haha I'm going to get called out as a saleswoman soon.

I only exercise on ellipticals. It's the closest thing I can get to no-impact, 100% cardio work. (To avoid bulking up on muscle, which my body is very prone to doing)

Your exercise superficially speaking seems to be fine. I'm guessing it is your diet. You are either eating the wrong combination of macronutrients, or you are getting them from the wrong sources, or you are missing the correct combination of dietary keys like amino acids to unlock your fat loss chain. Try a few different nutritionist/trainers, and hang in there, your body is a process not an object!

Yes I need the same for doing low impact, but cant afford a gym membership right now nor have the time to drive and get over there, was hoping something I could do around the house or anything like that. How about swimming? Someone else mentioned that, but would have to join the Y or something for that.

That is all really good to hear! I just emailed a nutritionist who has worked with vegans before. I really hope I can work with her and its not super expensive, just filling out her form it seems like I eat a lot of the same stuff over and over again, and I might be cutting too many things out of my diet. This is good!

If I get an appointment with her I will update on probable causes. I hope this helps other people trying to loose weight.

Absolutely! The vegan diet is so specific, and I know more than a few vegans that struggle with fat loss, so your exploration could help a lot of people. Please keep us updated, even with your setbacks etc.. Good luck, and never give up!

Take a colon cleanser once a week and it'll go away. I do that when I notice a slight pouch and it works for me.

femmefatale88: I have never thought of that one! I will try it. I've also thought about trying a juice fast but it is getting very cold here in WA so I should wait until Summer.

AngelKing: Do you know vegetarians who have trouble loosing weight? Because I had this problem when I was a vegetarian. I became vegan when I was 4 so I have no idea what meat does to my body!

I heard back from the nutritionist. We will be setting up an appointment soon!;D

I know tons of vegetarians and vegans who have a very hard time losing weight. Many vegetarian/vegan diets are very high-carb simply due to the nature of the foods compatible with the lifestyle, and manipulating nutrient ratios towards the protein side is difficult without carrying carbs over as well when you are doing so with vegetarian options, and even harder still with vegan ones.

That being said, it can be done, and I'm hoping your nutritionist will be able to help you rebalance your diet a little. In the time leading up to your appointment, start a food journal where you log everything you eat. Buy a $30 kitchen scale to help with the recording process. It's tedious and a pain in the ass, but you will need to do this eventually to start zeroing in on the weak links in your dietary chain.

I've been thinking about the carbs thing a lot lately. And since I was a competitive athlete I was encouraged to carb up!

I know it will be tedious but I'm sure once I figure out what I should/shouldn't eat it will be so much easier. I'm excited now! I can't wait to tone up my body!

What will the kitchen scale do? Just say how many cups there are of what I eat?

I'm gonna start a food journal tomorrow.

Carbing up definitely has its place, just as carbing down does as well. Unfortunately the vegetarian/vegan diet is by nature a carb-based diet, so hopefully your nutritionist will be able to help you out with some carb cycling in your program.
And yes, the kitchen scale is just so you can keep track of quantities, rather than just eyeballing amounts. The food journal is your friend! You might be surprised at the info you will get out of it after 10 days even. Just be super anal about it, and write down everything you consume, including drinks.

have you tried completely eliminating refined carbs? i.e no bread (although they do make sprouted whole grain bread-- i believe it is called ezekial or something similar but spelled correctly), no refined sugar, no cane sugar, no flour, etc etc. it might be harder as a vegan, but i think in general it helps most people.

^I might have, but not purposely. I really like Eziekiel bread and I don't really eat sugar anyways and I never bake anymore so no flour there. But if I'm going to reduce carbs, I might just do that anyways, and keep a better eye on it. Good idea!

I'm meeting with my nutritionist on Thursday!:goodvibes

i was a vegetarian for 16 years and recently started eating meat again, as i had to take several physical fitness tests for jobs. I, in turn lost 15 pounds , some of this was related to eating better in general but my trainer said that many vegetarians and vegans do not eat right and therefore crave certain foods that add weight gain.

I agree. I was vegetarian for 3 years, and vegan for a few months in the middle. Before going veg at age 19, I rarely craved chocolate, McDonalds fries, or other junk. I honestly believed I could live without chocolate quite happily if need be. I didn't eat a huge amount of meat any way, mostly because it was too expensive so I just didn't think about it.

But after going veg I would down entire bags of Maltesers (super sugary milk chocolate- not just regular) and craved chips and meat. I've been omni again for the past 18 months, and I think my sweet cravings are more under control, but not as good as pre.veg.

I consciously eat a lot more meat because I missed it when I was veg, and love McDonalds etc. The other main meat I eat is tuna in olive oil, which is really good for fatty acids required to keep slim.

Luckily I don't gain too much weight, I think because my body generally get what it needs. I feel much healthier.

I guess I should update since someone posted...

I've been doing a partial raw diet, but entirely gluten free and vegan. This did nothing. I've done supplements, colon cleanser, spoke to a nutritionist, checked hormone levels... nothing. I'm just always going to have a pooch.

However, lately I've been structuring the timing on my meals, like eating heavy breakfasts, heavy lunches, and a light never, and never eating after 9pm (which is a PAIN when you're a stripper). Also, doing plenty of crunches every morning, and running a couple times a week. This has been helpful. I still haven't completely lost my stomach, but I've slimmed down a little bit.

Maybe I'll post update pics tomorrow. Too lazy tonight. :)
Thanks for all the advice everyone!

Sigh. Sorry my advice didn't help more! It's amazing how differently peoples' bodies react to diets/exercise...

Your advice was good and I'm sure much of the info in this thread will be useful to someone who has different chemistry than me. My problem isn't because of how what I eat or how much exercise I get... mine is genetics.

I read the first page of posts and then browsed the third so forgive me if my thoughts were posted by someone else on page two.

Since you were looking into hemp and flax seed oil, I would like to recommend cold-pressed virgin coconut oil. It's excellent for external use (removing makeup, rubbing all over your body after showering after work because it's also an anti-bacterial amongst other things--helps with avoiding dreaded stripper breakouts), and also very good to cook with or supplement with. I don't know where your fat is coming from in your diet, but coconut oil is very good. Since you're vegan as well, and wouldn't go with fish oil or soy (I agree with you since I'm sensitive to soy), try coconut oil-- just make sure it's cold pressed, so the benefits of the coconut aren't cooked right out of them during the extraction. I've also tried extra virgin and virgin and haven't noticed a difference, plus I find more virgin coconut oil packed in glass jars-- for me, I don't know why but I can really taste the difference when I taste coconut oil packed in plastic and it makes me want to throw up a little, though other foods packed in plastic don't bother me.

It might also be much cheaper compared to hemp or flax seed-- I think a sixteen ounce jar at the store on sale is around $7. I might be off on the ounces but I do remember how hemp and flax seed was a lot more expensive.

Also, since you're attempting gluten-free (brava, by the way! I notice a difference when I go gluten-light but I don't really ever stay consistently gluten-free) check out http://crockpot365.blogspot.com/

^Oh I am wayyy on the coconut oil boat. I use it to wash my face every night, and use it in cooking since I do a lot of raw foods and my coconut oil is raw as well. It's good suggestion for anyone!
