View Full Version : Have you ever gone OFF of your birth control??

I don't know if it's related, but I had my Mirena taken out a couple of weeks ago and my acne has gotten terrible.
Does anyone use a diaphragm or cervical cap? I really want something (in addition to condoms) that isn't hormonal.

I've been on birth control since I was 13 ( too young I.M.O. as my body only had a year and a half of menstruation prior.) I really would love to stop taking it, but I'm sexually active (monogamous relationship). I think B.C. puts women a little out of sync with their bodies. I really would love to look into something more natural, like taking my temperature and fertility charting.
Luckily, I've never had much acne (could it be do to the B.C.??) so I don't think that will be an issue for me. Hopefully adjusting to my normal cycle won't be too rough :\

I only went on birth control (yaz) solely because I WAS going to try accutane, but decided better of it. And I've been on birth control for around a year now, even though I'm not sexually active. My face has cleared up tremendously. Though, I did gain A LITTLE weight when I started (my boobs got a half cup size bigger), I was super anxious all the time, and I now have cellulite, which I didn't before--at least not noticeably.
The only reason I would go off of it is to clear up my cellulite. But I'm afraid it would make my acne worse again. Though, at least you're on spiro. I think I read on acne.org or someplace like that that spiro generally clears up 85% of the acne, but spiro and birth control together clear up 87% or some jazz like that. Which if that's true, that tells me that you'll be fine. ;)

I'm totally weirded out--I've already gotten my period (at the same time I was scheduled to get it on the pill). I can't tell if this is withdrawal bleeding still, or if this means that my body has gotten back on track. Seems like an entirely too fast turnaround???

Soooo, I'm considering going off of my birth control. I know many of you ladies don't take birth control, so I'm looking to you for advice!
Questions:
1) What made you decide to go off of it? Or, if you never started taking it in the first place, then why not?
2) What symptoms did you have while coming off of it? (I'm most concerned about acne)
3) What do you use now for contraceptives? Condoms? Are you afraid you'll get pregnant?
I really really really want to hear from you all about this! All advice is appreciated!
I used a lot of different methods, but one worth noting is...:
1.Depo shot. I got off it because it made me bleed EVERY SINGLE DAY for 6 months.
2.Symptoms when I got off it: Heavy bleeding for days to the point of fainting. ER nurse said it was my body withdrawing.
3.I use birth control now (Yaz) but I used pull out method until I got back on birth control.

Well I've been off of it for about three weeks now. Things I've noticed so far:
-Slightly more oily hair/face
-A tiny bit more acne, but certainly nothing problematic (I'm worried this will get much worse)
-No periods or anything yet
-Perhaps a slight decrease in weight, but nothing significant
-Perhaps an increase in sex (masturbation) drive?
Is anyone else on SW going off of bc? If so, feel free to chime in!!
I stopped my pill summer 08, my skin was fine until feb 09 then came the razy acne, i felt awful and went back o the pill anything was better than what I felt like with acne, I would like to stop again but I am too scared.

I experimented with taking the pill (yasmin, YAZ, ortho-tri cyclen lo, various generics) when I was age 16-18 and found that it just doesn't work for me, nor is it healthy. Every kind I tried had side effects that outweighed the positives of being on it. I gained weight/lost weight, nausea, skin probs, etc..
its best to just let the body do its thing.
I would suggest looking into the fertility awareness method and looking into what specific herbs to take to make the transition easier... a couple that come to mind that I think would help would be Dong Quai and raspberry leaf.
I don't use BC.... I use the FAM and use condoms when I'm fertile or with a new partner, and because I'm single I'm most always with a new partner so I always use condoms. In the future though I plan on being with a partner who has a vasectomy because I don't want my own children, I want to adopt.

Feel free to use this thread to update us on your progress! I feel lucky that I haven't gotten any acne yet. But I'm afraid that I'll suddenly break out in like 6 months or something (as some women do).

I don't normally chime in (on a personal level). But, this is one time that I feel I should. I have been using the ParaGuard IUD for the last 2+ years. I was really, really worried about getting it. Of course, I was really worried about hormonal contraceptive as well. I was worried about perforating my uterus. I was worried about side effects, such as heavier periods (like they weren't heavy enough and long enough and painful enough to begin with). I had gotten pregnant on the sponge, the foam, condoms, and while nursing (before ever getting my period back). Plus, I had taken Yaz and ended up with high blood pressure and the Depo shot completely took away my sex drive (making birth control a mute point all together). I seriously used to have periods that lasted 10 super heavy days (clots, terrible cramps (to the point of doctor prescribed pain medication), many nights of waking to clean up a mess (with a tampon in and night-time pad), serious mood swings, and more). It was terrible. I also have four beautiful boys, all of which were conceived while in the process of prevention. My husband and I joke that we can get pregnant by looking at each other from across the room. The ParaGuard has changed everything. By removing the hormones, I have removed almost all of my side effects. I have not gotten pregnant. My periods last four days and are never to the point that I have to get up in the middle of the night to change anything. With the addition of a cup (rather than tampons), my cramps are non-existent. The only thing that I experience is a slight breakout close to period time and a dip in my energy level. I absolutely love the ParaGuard IUD. It is my answer. No hormones. No true side effects. No worries. And, my hormonal acne does not act up anymore than it did without BC. As for insertion, it isn't pleasant, but it isn't, by far, the worst thing I've experienced. It is hormone-free and lasts for ten years. What more could a girl ask for? So, take it or leave it....my two cents goes whole-heartedly toward the ParaGuard IUD coupled with a cup during menses....the magic combination for me.... Hope this helps in some small way.... :)

Wow, I really appreciate all of this! You really addressed all of my fears. I have been contemplating getting the ParaGard (by the way, how much did it cost? I have insurance), but was afraid of all of the complications people complain about. Then again, people only tend to give opinions on such things when they're disappointed, so it's hard to discern what the 'typical' experience is. Thank you!!!

I am not joking...now is the time to sit down...I had insurance...and it cost me.......my specialist co-pay of $25....yes, for ten years of birth control, I paid a whopping $25. Of course, my insurance, at the time was AWESOME (I had Aetna)....but, from what the nurses told me, it is normally 80% insurance, 20% out of pocket....you can ask your gyno to give you an estimate of how much it will cost. Just give them a call. They are usually familiar enough with the individual insurance companies to give you an accurate estimate. But, according to the nurses in my gyno office, most people expect it to be more...but, it is usually way less than what you pay, even in one year of normal BC pill co-pays, for the ParaGard for those that have insurance. I guess the insurance companies normally see the advantange of the one-time cost of BC (per 10 years) compared to a new life...Yeah, $25 well-spent! ;D

I do agree...people only seem to voice their opinion when they have a negative experience. I can only speak for myself and two other people that I personally know that are on the ParaGard IUD. All three of us love it. Two of us, for sure, have experienced lighter periods. (We both have had children. The third woman has not. But, while she has not had children and has not volunteered her "personal experience" as far as her period goes, has told me on numerous occasions that she will be having this IUD removed when it expires and having another one immediately inserted. So, it can't be that bad!) So, for no money per month, lighter periods per month, and no hormones per month, I am free to be spontaneous (whenever I feel like making him happy - I think I'm more asexual than I have yet to admit) whenever I feel like it. Ten years of freedom is worth the five minutes (or less) of discomfort and the little out of pocket expense at the gyno office. I must stress that, even with the ParaGard, the big difference (as far as cramps and physical discomfort) came when I also incorporated the cup. Cutting out tampons was equivalent to cutting out cramps and three to five days of menstruation. Cutting out hormonal contraceptives was equivalent to giving me back my sexual freedom and my independence from hormonal BC side effects. And, come on, ten years of worry-free sex....priceless...}:D

I'm considering switching to ParaGuard when my Mirena is due for replacement. It sounds fantastic.
And I'll just chime in about the cost -- I actually didn't have insurance when I got my Mirena, and paid (including "installation") $800. But 5 years of no discernable period, almost no cramps.....yeah. Worth it to say the least.

It's spelled "Gard"!?? Well, shit. I can't tell you how much I hate that. :D
If the pain is comparable to Mirena installation, you'll be ok. I haven't ever had tots either, but I did ok. It's a sort of pinchy, sharp, crampy pain, but it's not intense and it's short-lived. After a few days of cramps I was dandy. You'll do great!!

So I'm two months 'clean' now (haha). I have had zero skipped periods since going off of it...which is weird. My cycle apparently just didn't skip a beat and got right on track; I didn't expect that at all. I haven't really noticed any big changes in my weight or anything. I'm still recovering from anemia, so I'm supposed to be feeling better over time anyway.
My skin is still totally good (I'm hoping due to Spironolactone, exercise, and water consumption)...also crossing my fingers on this. I'm worried that I'll suddenly break out 6 months after going off of BC.
I'm getting the ParaGard IUD (non-hormonal) on Thursday. I'll update on how that goes, if I like it, if it hurts, etc.
Athena--thanks for your update! Anyone else who is doing this should also feel free to chime in on this thread.
ETA: It's scary that many of us are experiencing changes in weight and whatnot after just a couple of months of being off of BC. Makes me wonder what that shit can do to you if you stay on it long-term. Is that the reason so many older women find it impossible to lose weight?? What else could BC be doing to us over time?

^All I know is after about 5 months back on the pill my ass and thighs have major hail damage! Even after dropping my fat percentage down again. Grrrr! The Mirena IUD has hormones in it...most women stop having periods altogether...maybe that wouldn't cause cellulite?

^ Yeah, that's why even the most in-shape women in the world (you probably have seen some of them in your SC) still have a bit of cellulite here and there. There's no gettin' rid of that shit through exercise.
It's partially genetic...and also hormonal (as evidenced by the fact that many of us experience an increase in cellulite thanks to our BC pills).
Ok, you guys have convinced me to stop the pill again. I'm going to finish this pack then stop. I feel like Athena.....since I've gone back on the pill, I've gained weight, constantly feel hungry, and generally tired and blah.
The only thing is that I really do not want kids. Ever. Guess I'll go back to temperature charting and condoms during high-risk times of my cycle.

charlie 61: you a mirroring me in life right this moment lol!
I am on and have been on yasmin for, oh i dunno, 3-4 years. but on bcp's for like 8 years. I am due to get the non hormonal IUD put in on tuesday. I'm apprehensive about the insertion but my sis in law had it done and said it wasn't too hellish. I've heard, and read stories both positive and negative. I'm not bothered about how my body reacts when its in - I've got implants so rejection is unlikely as my body has already accepted a foreign object/s. Its the getting it in there that is playing on my mind. I took my last yasmin pill last night, with a view to coming on my period within the next few days as insertion of the IUD is easier mid flow apparently due to cervix being more open - its gross....dont get me wrong i feel for the doctor when she has to go down there full flow...but hey whatever makes it easier for her and me (she claimed to LOVE inserting mid flow as its so much easier)
so thats my deal with the iud
as for the yasmin....i am petrified of the withdrawal from it.
Iv googled the hell out of coming off of it - and shouldnt have done really. I'll never learn that google can be terrible when it comes to unaswered health queries lol!
iv read women coming off yasmin losing hair, gaining lots of weight (im talking 8kgs) and suffering depression. now i didnt suffer with any of that pre yasmin, so im thinking i wont after. the pill certainly put weight on me, so im thinking i'll maybe lose some coming off? although i am now losing weight whilst on it - i don't want that to platau/stop.
so yeah my biggest worry.....weight. i mean how likley is it that the same bloody pill that causes the weight gain when consumed also causes weight gain through withdrawal!!
when people are writing their experiences of coming off pills could you list which pill it is pretty please....just for reference.
I'll keep you updated of my experiences with both withdrawing and the IUD - and look forward to reading your updates too.
Oh yeah...and what is spiro?!?!
charlie61
12-30-2010, 12:08 PM
Oh yeah...and what is spiro?!?!
Spironolactone is a blood pressure medication that can be prescribed off-label to treat acne. I've been taking 50 mg daily for about 2 years now with no side-effects and phenomenal skin (I used to have mild-medium acne). Most (if not all) of the girls who have since tried it on this forum have loved it as well. It will only help you if you are 1) female and 2) experience hormonal acne. If you have any acne, then you probably know if it's hormonal (if your skin gets terrible before your period). It has seriously changed my life.
Do a search for Spiro in Body Business--I'm pretty sure there are a couple of threads around here with more information!
Soo....
I just got my ParaGard put in!
I only paid $20 for the entire thing...which is insanely amazing. My mom has great insurance.
I got a doctor who had me take Misoprostol (relaxes the cervix) two hours beforehand AND she numbed my cervix with Lidocaine. I'm really glad she did this. It hurt a bit when she measured my uterine length. Turns out I just barely have a long enough uterus for the ParaGard (thank effing gawd). And the insertion definitely cramped, which is kind of a scary feeling, but not badly.
Right now I'm bleeding a bit and have occasional cramping. Honestly, I think I'm more afraid of pain than in pain, if that makes sense. I'm a total wimp about vaginal pain--I don't even get cramps when I'm on my period--so having pain down there downright scares me! Even the slightest twinge is scary. Cramping is not fun! Props to you ladies who have to deal with cramps every month...
Right now (a few hours after the procedure), I'm only getting sporadic cramping. Mostly I'm just feeling awesome. I am SO glad I did this. Non-hormonal, long-term, instantly-reversible, low-one-time-cost...uh...YEAH. Pretty awesome.
So thank you to our Supermod for encouraging me to pursue this!! I will keep this thread updated with my progress (if I experience any spotting, etc.).

Very interesting, thanks so much for sharing your experience! My best friend said her insertion killed, and my sister had a bad experience with the IUD not being placed properly, so I've only heard bad first hand experiences.
I also cannot stand pap tests or anything touching my cervix, so the insertion part is really what scares me.
Non-hormonal long term BC would be ideal though. I'll definitely be researching this more.

So it's my second day and I'm still not experiencing any pain. Nothing. It's a bit weird to think that there's something inside of my uterus....but otherwise, I couldn't be happier.
When I signed up for my appointment, I specifically asked for an OBGYN...she was great. But she said that most women who don't get theirs placed properly get their IUDs placed by doctors who don't specialize in women.
It's hard to argue with the logic though. I mean, even if it's really painful upon insertion, 10 years of non-hormonal BC is crazy.

what birth control were you coming off of charlie61...which pill?
I took my last yasmin pill last wednesdau so nearly a week pill free now. so glad i made the decision to come off.
oh and got the coil today.....wtf!
so i go in at 8.30 - absolutely petrified from all the horror stories but also hopeful from all the positive stories.
the spectrum (sp?) going in = fine.
the cervix being pinched open = fine. not even that painful.
my uterus length being measure = fine.
the iud being put in = cramping.com!
it was, like you said, the most bizarre feeling. i expected pure pain (ie like a cut/pinch/stab) but i just cramped and cramped and cramped - squeezing the hell outta the nurses hand lol.
and that was it....or so i thought lol. i was left lying down for about half hour. the cramping was uncomfortable at most, but nothing i havent experienced before. so i go to sit up and put my trousers back on, and nearly pass out. so lay back down. try getting up again 15 mins later, nearly pass out so have to lay down again. this continued - for an hour!!! i couldnt get up from laying position. the doctor came back in, she was amazing (she has a coil herself and is very understanding). She said it seems like my body is rejecting it hence why anytime i try to get up in the slightest my blood pressure drops andi faint.
the problem was i was taking up the nurses office/room/bed and she had a queue of patients outside that have been waiting ages. they needed me to sit in the waiting room but if i couldnt even sit up how was i meant to walk? lol. finally i managed to get up and make a controlled dash to the waiting area cleared for me, just in time before passing out again.
i was getting seriously, seriously bored of it and just wanted to go home. bleeding wasnt heavy cramping was easing up i just couldnt get the hell up :(
so the doctor came out and said if i cant get up this time then its coming out as my uterus was 6.5 cm's and it may be that the coil was resting on my cervix causing the shock everytime i try and stand. so i sat up, stood up....passed out. but i said to her please please please let me just try again in a little bit as after all the pain of it going in, i wanted to see if it worked for me in the long run. so she agreed. sent my SO to go get two cereal bars, bless him, as thought if my blood sugar was up I may be less likely to faint! had those, about half hour later sat up, was fine, stood up, was fine. she reluctantly watched me - and finally agreed that i was standing fine, keeping my colour and moving ok.
so......yay! done. im now hormone free, pregnancy protected, tired after such an extended ordeal (should be 1 hour max, took 3.5!!), and sat on the sofa with high hopes for my new bc!!
how is yours going charlie? are you using tampons yet? x

^ So the coil is the same as the IUD? Congrats on your successful (albeit difficult) insertion!
I was coming off of Ortho-Tricyclen Lo.
And I don't use tampons! I use the DivaCup. I bled for the first couple of days after I got the IUD, but haven't bled since.

ah my bad.....coil is what we call the IUD over here (think its something to do with back in the day, it was actually spirally and coil shaped rather than T!)
It sounds stupid....but im freaking out because its now not hurting lol! Not bleeding much and doesnt hurt when i move quick or hard etc! lol
though i wanna go for a run tomorrow - a few miles along the beach. Forgive me for being stupid but....it won't move will it?
I've never heard of the ortho bc pill! Is it specific to the US?

My Mom has been pestering me to get off the pill... I'm on Ortho-Tricyclen Lo too and have been for about a year and 4 months. After reading this thread, it makes me want to see about getting an IUD.
I had looked into Mirena before but If I remember correctly, you had to have already had 1 child or have to be of a certain age (which I'm not)...?
So does anyone know what are the requirements for ParaGard?
The only requirement is that your uterus has to be large enough to hold it (6 cm I believe), which your doc will measure during the actual procedure.
IUDs used to be used only in women who had given birth, but this has changed. Physicians even put IUDs in teens now. All that matters is the size of your uterus.
If I were you, I would just make sure your doc gives you some kind of cervical relaxant and/or a local anesthetic. Or just man up and endure severe cramping for a few minutes (after all, 10 years of worry-free birth control is worth it).
ParaGard specs: Non-hormonal, can leave it in for up to 10 years, doesn't interfere with your normal cycle (you will still ovulate and have periods). It is less expensive than the Mirena, but if you don't have insurance, then the device + placement can cost up to $1,000.
So far I'm loving mine. It feels so good to be off of hormones.

Running will not move it! Remember, it's like INSIDE your uterus. Lol--it's so cute that you're asking these questions, because I had the same fears! Check out the graphic though: that puppy ain't goin' anywhere!

sleeping last night was funny....as i refused to lay on my tummy for worry - though woke up in that position so obviously got on with it lol. its just gonna take a lil getting used to mentally i think lol but, day 2 and i love it x

charlie61 - can i ask, have you attempted to feel the strings yet? iv had a constant feeling since yesterday when it went in, like something was in myvaginal canal. a bit like the feeling of knowing you have a tampon in. so today i decided to check the area to make sure the device hadnt expelled and wasnt sitting in my v.canal. and i felt the string. easily! like...i thought they were meant to be high up by the cervix? i was about 2.5-3 cm's in?!?
