CadenceQ you sound really knowledgeable - that's a lot of typing to do! What skin care regimen would you recommend for someone like JD or me who are in search of PERFECT skin? No discolouration, invisible pores and completely wrinkle-free? If money, time and availability of product were all no issue.

If it helps I think we're both in our early-mid 20s and are both former smokers (?! WHY DO I KNOW THAT?! I promise I'm not a stalker I just read a LOT of SW).

I'd be willing to bet that these statements claiming collagen can "regenerate" came from either product/service brochures or glossy type magazine/net articles? Ie - more slick marketing.

It actually came from a well-researched article in Elle that wasn't trying to sell anything. But I remember it was saying that these emerging techniques are very new and are still being studied. It was pretty definitive about the regeneration thing. Maybe you just haven't heard about this yet? (And I suggest that with genuine respect for your knowledge base!)

5) Big misconception.New collagen does not regenerate, ever. I don't care what Cosmo says, what some slick beauty brand sales rep says, or what product advertising claims, it doesn't happen, period. So your Retin A is not generating new collagen (in fact I'd be willing to bet with the combination of products you are using, and how, you are damaging collagen fibres). We are born with a finite amount of genetically predetermined collagen an elastin fibres within our skin, and all of this is held in beautiful little strongly cross-linked strands held as a gelatinous substance bound together by various proteins and hyalouronic acid (if theres one paragraph people who love their skin need to read, it's this one). By the age of 20 yrs we have lost roughly 50% of our collagen and elastin supply (mainly due to lifestyle factors such as smoking, alcohol and sun exposure, partly to normal ageing), this will never regenerate, once the strand is dead or bundled (collagen bundles into hard clumps with ageing), it is that way forever. General mitosis occurs of course, but with collagen it is just one split to keep one live cell in place. Collagen is not like if you get a cut and the skin cells make multiple cell divisions to make new skin, it replaces one live cell only and does not regenerate damaged cells. For these reason I do everything I can to protect my collagen supply, and advise my clients to do the same.

Do tell us how we all may protect our collagen supplies! Wether with product or homemade organic product, I would love to know more info about this.

Skincare is so overwhelming to me. Right now I use a Clarsonic cleaner every night and usually use Avalon Organics CoQ10 facial cleansing milk that I bought at Whole Foods. It seems to leave my face feeling really smooth and soft. In the morning I use a Shishedo day cream with sun screen and at night a Lancome night cream. I also put powder on during the day with sunblock. I get botox every four months and some restylne. My skin can be a little dry though and I don't hardly ever break out. I'm always up to try new things though and keep my skin the best I can.

JD hpw did you find that cycle of Retin-A? I'd like to order some but the bad-skin part has me scared. Did you find the face brush pulled at your skin at all or any excessive dryness?

Hey! I wanted to post a long response to this thread a while back, but forgot. My sister is a medical student who is doing her clinical rotations, and she was doing her derm rotation when I showed her this thread, coincidentally. She learned in medical school from dermatologists that Retin A is GOOD for your skin, it helps reverse damage. As far collagen synthesis, that is a complex system that ties into our personal genetics. Damage to your skin does cause collagen synthesis, which is why chemical peels, lasers, and microdermabrasion work. As far as being born with a set number of collagen and your body can't create any more, well that's not true.

Yes, I liked the Retin A! I found a woman in Dallas who has it mixed by a chemist who uses hyaluronic acid as a base, so it's very emollient and not near as drying. I really love it. I quit using the face brush, I know use Dr. Brandt microdermabrasion crystals maybe once every week or two. I still use spf 40 everyday.

^ I trust your experience...what brand of sunscreen do you use? I'm looking for something I can use on my face that won't break my skin out.

Charlie, I have gone through several, and I LOVE La Vanila SPF 40 face cream, it's called "The Healthy Sunscreen". It's a pure physical sunblock, so no chemicals. I feel like most face sunscreens are chemical mixed with physical (titanium dioxide and zinc oxide) and the chemical ones make my eyes burn and irritate my skin! This one is sooo soothing! Also, it's paraben free, sulfate free, silicone free, and uses no petrochemicals (mineral oil). The first ingredient is aloe juice, and most of the ingredients are organic. The only trade off is you will look like a geisha for 15 minutes until it absorbs. It's a little pricey, but lasts at least 3 months.
