Holy shit! That. is. amazing.

Can you share some of your upload speed?? LOL.

I'd be more than happy to:D
And it's not expensive either! For $9 you get 2-3 Mbs upload here:)I pay a bit more for this package but it's worth every penny.

You're welcome here anytime, lol!:D
I was amazed too when I've first seen what the ISPs here can do and for how little. A lot has changed since Ceausescu!:D

What nobody has posted so far is the relationship of actual upload speeds to the bandwidth requirements of various video streams.

For standard 480p resolution at 15fps, you need somewhere around 0.5 mbps

For 720p at 15fps, you need around 1.5mbps. For 720p at 30fps, you need around 3.0mbps

for 1080p true HD you need 8+ mbps

Officially got my own net connection last week and my internet is worse than when I was just bumming off an open router. Just did another speedtest and I can see why.

Download: 2.94 Mb/s

Upload: 0.23 Mb/s

Ping: 21 ms

Grade: D- (slower than 80% of the US)

My ISP is ATandT. I'm supposed to be paying around $35 a month 3megs uploading ( I think. hubby set it up. that's not including the $70 I just paid to get it turned on) and this is what I get? Pisses me off because every other complex in this town offers free internet with the lease and while the connection was shared building wide, I never had any issues. Here I am paying for my own private router and...grrr.

dang, guys... most of you are 15+ and i'm stuck back here at 13kbps/4kbps. i thought that was good til now! lmao. the site gave me a B though so i guess it's not too bad...

SexyLaney
11-29-2011, 05:56 PM
You may also want to check your connection quality on a site like this:
and notice if you have packet loss...any packet loss over 5-10% will make your cam lag, studder, freeze, etc. regardless of your upload speed.

I want to insist: The geolocation shown in the result is NOT your location. It's the location of the server where the test was made. The system allows you to choose from a variety of servers ALL AROUND THE WORLD.

There's NOTHING to be paranoid about! -_-"

cherryblossomsinspring
12-26-2011, 12:57 PM
^True but most people will use a location close to their own.

KarinaGiselle
12-26-2011, 03:00 PM
And that's why you can always change that location, duh :P

cherryblossomsinspring
12-26-2011, 05:46 PM
Or they can just leave the location out of the posting here. Not sure why "duh" was necessary. Unless you didn't read the thread where a guy up and moved to a model's state.

When I hear "duh". It's like someone saying "dumb ass".

If you don't care about posting your info fine then. That is your choice. However other models should have the fucking choice! A false sense of security is what gets people killed .... DUMB ASS! ohh I mean't DUH!!!! FFS:O

KarinaGiselle
12-26-2011, 06:16 PM
Look, I didn't mean to offend you or anyone else. I NEVER meant to use the word "duh" as synonym of dumbass and I do understand your point. However, like I said countless times already: the information displayed in the image where it says location is NOT YOUR REAL physical location (AKA the place where you live).

Here's the proof

http://www.speedtest.net/result/1670378227.png
http://www.speedtest.net/result/1670379611.png
http://www.speedtest.net/result/1670380613.png

As you can see these tests were made with a difference of a few minutes. IF the physical location displayed was MY location, then would you like to explain me how the heck I moved from Spain to UK, and to California in a matter of seconds? :P

There's NOTHING to worry about! Just choose a server that is away from your real location and you'll be safe! How the hell will "stalkers" know where we live if there are hundreds of servers to choose from all over the world? Please...

And there's no need to call names on anyone, if you want to argue with me, fine, but do it over PM. We don't need to degrade each other in front of everyone and affect this forum and its community.

A few more things I'd like to add: Latency doesn't matter that much for video streaming since it's not an operation that requires an immediate delivery of the data packets, unlike online gaming. Also, it's not the download speed what matters: it's the UPLOAD speed. At least for us. Unfortunately I notice that sometimes speedtest isn't 100% precise with the speed tracking since the transmission time isn't long, so it can vary.

h0ttie
12-26-2011, 06:58 PM
the further the server u use the slower results you will get. i edited out the server i used because i am paranoid. but some girls are using their real cam names and you can see that they are within 50 miles of the location of the server. also there are some internet providers that only serve a small area..so be careful with that too.
i worry way too much...but u can never be too careful. please lets not forget there are hundreds of people (creeps) watching us on here.

cherryblossomsinspring
12-26-2011, 10:05 PM
Thanks H0ttie! Exactly what I was trying to say. Why use servers for a test that will give a bad reading? When the closer server will be the one that you'll most likely be connecting to?

So I'll go and find a server across the world just so I can post it here? For what?

Posting real results that are the closet to your actual connection may make the most sense.

Calling names? I was just translating "duh". Look it up it "duh" = dumb or stupid. Again what works for me doesn't work for everyone else. I just wouldn't want someone in harms way because I told them they were being paranoid. Being cautions is smart.

Things can still happen, but doing all you can makes most feel at ease that they have at least tried.

Remember this is a forum where we would hope to help one another not make another person feel stupid for trying to keep others safe.

... because the server you actually care about connecting to, i.e. your webcam host's server, is probably located thousands of miles away if not in a foreign country. As such, reaching that webcam host server involves a lot more internet backbone data exchange ( and delays ) than simply accessing the local server of your ISP.

I am here to help others as well by sharing the knowledge I have so we can do our jobs in a better way and make more money. If anyone got offended by my comments, I'm sorry, it was NOT my intention to do that. I just want to help.

I'll write a thread about online security to discuss this topic later. Instead of fighting here, let's talk about that, in another thread, ok?

This is true , but generally you're purchasing a package with your ISP that (is supposed to give you) a certain speed. If you're not getting that at the base level of connection, trying to connect to a distance further away would create some problems.

As we saw above how the connects speeds varied greatly when other servers were selected.

Also wondering what sites in particular are not within the US borders or aren't using US servers besides of course AW?

I got 15mb DL and 2.2mb Upload with a ping between 10 and 25 (did multiple).

I pay for a 30mb DL and 3mb Upload so i called the helpservice and im getting a new modem from them and new cables. :P(I got their old modem from 2006 before i upgraded last year)

Once i get higher speeds im gonna see if i can get a custom package, to lower my download speed and increase upload :)

Just upgraded.....

was:
download 21.24
upload 3.79
ping 10
Grade B+

now:
download 62.63
upload 10.36
ping 9
Grade A+

not sure what any of that means, could someone explain if that is worth $50 a month extra? Thank ya kindly...

KarinaGiselle

It's TOTALLY worth it! Your upload speed is what matters for camming, and with that speed, you should be good for splitcamming, maybe in HD.
