Is your computer pretty decent? SM stated that you only need 0.6Mbps to run the HD Encoder.
u think good enough? I still live at home and plan on moving this year so my internet be better by then. be kind of odd asking my mom hey umm we need better internet... lol. idk. I just plan on signing up for SM.
thanks for replying.

Just got a new laptop in hopes of fixing my problems but my speedtest results still seem low to me. Not too familiar with what the results mean but this is what I ended up with:
Download : 3.35 Mb/s
Upload: 5.39 Mb/s
Ping: 42 ms

Your laptop has nothing to do with your speedtest (well very little). Speedtest is all your internet. If your speeds aren't what the provider has you pay for you need to call them. The fanciest computer in the world won't fix it.

HotSpot Shield will give you bogus numbers as your speed test numbers are running through to proxy. Trust me, call your ISP and bitch them out for not delivering what you pay for.

I sometimes get up to 1.05, but usually is around 0.90. Right now my computer is the only thing using internet in the house, but grandmother wants to have telephone and I will buy a laptop. My ISP said telephone uses around 1 Mbps, but only when it is used and the other computer also doesn't take anly unless if both computer are using the internet at the same time. I will not do that, I will only use one comp at once, and grandmother won't use phone more than twice per day. What do you think, can these things lower my upload speed, even if not used at the same time as I cam or not?

Having more than one computer in the home connected to the same internet connection can also affect your SpeedTest results, right?
Cam_Model_Jess
05-11-2013, 06:09 AM
It doesn't just affect your results, it affects your speed. Each device using the internet will use up part of the bandwidth. So the more devices, the less available for each.
TheBrownFox
05-11-2013, 06:28 AM
Yeah, that's what I meant to say. That it affects internet speed, which will then affect your SpeedTest results.

Something went wrong with my cable one day, and when they fixed it, my speeds got better. It happened again a couple weeks ago. So now I'm up to 75 down and 11 up, average. Sometimes it gets higher, but it's unstable.

I'll take an A- especially since I don't count it in my start up costs because someone else pays it for me. :)

But that only affects the speed if both computers use internet at the same time right? If one of them is turned off it probably makes no difference..

I don't know, because even when I shut down my computer, my Control Panel/Network and Internet area is still connected. I never disconnect that part. I bet that if I did start disconnecting that part, it'd make the internet a little faster for someone else in the other room.

Its usually from 20mb/s to 40mb/s ... depends on time...

Something to keep in mind...
Streamate Support advised me to check my speedtest at speakeasy.net and select Seattle because that's where their servers are located.
The results you get when you check at speedtest.net, and the results you get when you check at speakeasy.net (Seattle) may be quite different...
My speedtest.net results:
http://www.speedtest.net/result/2701961259.png
My speakeasy.net results:
http://s22.postimg.org/tk0z88c5d/speedtestthinger.jpg
Both these results were taken wireless.
If you just tested your speed again and are shocked and appalled, if you didn't know already, hardwiring yourself the internetz with a cable may well give you a higher speed and also a much stronger connection (meaning the encoder (hopefully!) doesn't drop you or kick you anymore).
But yeah... This could easily explain why I found streaming with the encoder difficult, if not impossible, many times whilst using my old internet. speedtest.net showed my then speeds ranging from 0.60 to 0.90 - so I thought I was good to go - if I would have checked my speed using speakeasy.net however, it probably would have shown my speed at something like .......0.00.

Nina that's still over 0.60 mbps - the minimum speed SM advise you need to stream HD - (actually trusting SM Support right now based on this speakeasy.net shiz), you should be absolutely fine to go.

I only get 0.56 upload speed with speakeasy, and with speedtest 0.96. But my stream on SM looks pretty clear and encoder usually works at 0.6-1.0 speed(from encoding log), the delay is about 5 sec, etc. I must say that before I bought my I5 laptop(with 3.2 ghz proccessor speed) I was camming from Intel Pentium and the stream was freezing, lagging, and the cam delay was sometimes about 3-5 MINUTES(with the same internet speed)! So I guess my laptop really makes wonders. :D

Time Warner will say, "It says UP TO Xmb" if you call and complain about upload speed. If you're testing while programs or systems are running that use the internet, it will throw off your results. However, all TWs plans except their Extreme plans only have 1mb upload for that area.
Their "extreme" go up to 5mb upload.
15 down, 1 up is Time Warners standard highspeed internet for the region. Looks like you're on the basic package to me.

Omg! I just got a new place (finally, in the complex I wanted in the first place when I moved to this city almost two months ago) with hardwired Internet and I'm at 20.75 mbps download/1.97 mbps upload. Which isn't great compared to a lot of girls' results but considering that my old place had shitty WiFi and I couldn't even get a steady stream (~0.90 ul when it was good, which was maybe 5% of the time--yeah, working was a little difficult, to put it mildly) I am SO PSYCHED RIGHT NOW. Yayyy!
