Do any of y'all count calories and if so about how many calories do you eat a day?

I don't count calories. I count macronutrients. I follow the zone diet that allows me to eat the foods I like so long as I properly portion them. Oftentimes, I end up eating healthier just because I want to be more full. Like, I can eat a half a slice of bread for 1 block, or a full 9 inch cucumber for 1 block. Cucumber fills me up more, so I choose that.

That said, I eat about 1400 calories a day in solid foods, with another 800-2000 calories coming from supplements, depending on whether I'm bulking or cutting. My maintenance is 2700 calories (5'9" 200 lb, 13% BF).

I do not count calories ever just eat certain things, when I danced my diet was much better than now. Today I had hot lemon water then tomato and basil soup and bread ugh think im over my bread kick. then I just had cookies and ice-cream and green tea, yes my period is due, later I have Chinese leftover shrimp rice. Then the rest of week I will get back to my healthy groceries.

I try to eat healthy but I don't always.

Nothing! Just a cup of plain green tea.

I ate too much over the last two weeks, and it's starting to show a bit, which I don't like.

I have a very hard time not eating too much in social environments where there is endless supply of tasty stuff and stimulating socialisation, which for some reason leads me to keep on eating... and I have a HUGE stomach capacity. I can eat lots even if I'm not hungry. It's not uncommon for me to eat so much that people start to comment on it. I'm the one who finishes off the serving dishes in a restaurant, eats up the whole bread basket, etc. Guys twice my weight start to find it weird...

On the other hand, when not being social, most of the time I have no difficulty in not eating at all, especially if I had a substantial meal the day before.

I thus keep things under control mostly by varying the frequency of eating, rather than the quantity.

It works for me. I basically trained myself not to eat only if I'm hungry, with exceptions for "social eating" which I enjoy so much. It balances fairly well except when there is too much socialisation!

Anyway, I thought I'd share, because it's the contrary of what "everyone" suggests, but following the "conventional wisdom" had me ballooning rapidly. The first casualty of my new "eat when hungry only" method is usually breakfast, which I have no desire for. Lunch and dinner often morph into one larger meal. If I'm socialising, I can eat the large dinners which I enjoy so much in those circumstances. Otherwise, I have a more normal-sized meal and am satisfied with that. So much for conventional wisdom.

I realise that while this works for me, it's probably disastrous for many others. I tend to digest slowly and thus not feel hungry for a long time after a lot of food, don't feel hunger much otherwise anyway, habitually skipped lunch in high school just because I didn't like the lunchroom environment, rarely have strong cravings, etc.

For breakfast I had a banana with a little almond butter and black coffee. Lunch was a bowl of edamame and tofu. Dinner was a southwest style sweet potato w/ black beans, corn, fresh salsa, cilantro, and nutritional yeast.

I like to give myself one small junky thing a day so I will probably have a Justin's dark chocolate peanut butter cup later. So good, but they're addictive! Try at your own risk. :D

I agree with your method 100%. I can eat like a pig and I LOVE food, so I have to have lots of discipline. I usually skip breakfast and lunch/dinner blur together. For me it's better to eat less during the day and have a larger meal in the evening. I rarely feel hungry during the day. The conventional 5-6 small meals a day concept doesn't work for me and I tend to gain weight/feel bloated when I graze throughout the day. If I ate three full meals a day, I would definitely gain weight. I love to eat out on occasion, too. Whenever I go to restaurants I eat/drink to my heart's content.

Americans are so conditioned to overeat. Most people don't know what it's like to actually feel true hunger because they're taught to eat at certain times of the day, whether or not they're actually hungry. Or they try to satisfy emotional hunger with food.

I started cooking for myself since some time ago and I think I have reached my personal record of eating kinda 99% home cooked foods by me. I feel good about it and I don t think I am going to return to eating mostly in the city very soon.

It is time consuming...ufff and most of the time it s yummy. Sometimes I do wild experiments with vegetarian/vegan cuisine and they don t always come out as delicious as I wanted.
Today I had (as usually) lots of veggies, fruits and combinations between those both in home cooked food and in smoothies.

Americans are so conditioned to overeat. Most people don't know what it's like to actually feel true hunger because they're taught to eat at certain times of the day, whether or not they're actually hungry. Or they try to satisfy emotional hunger with food.

This has also been my conclusion, and I used to be a part of that problem, having picked up the idea of "meal times" from society around me. Though I think that a lot of "hunger" is the carbs/sugar-insulin cycle that is actually easy enough to beat. In my case, what got me into the cycle in the first place was primarily... breakfast. They're tolerable to me (though unnecessary) if they're not the "all carbs" type that are so common, but really get the cycle going otherwise. This being said, I'll often have something like an apple or grapefruit in the morning, and that doesn't seem to screw me up.

What I find really weird is the "you can't skip breakfast", "it's not healthy to skip meals" and the "but you have to eat" comments directed at me by obese people. I don't sit around fat-shaming anyone: your body, your choices, your problems. I just wish I got the same courtesy. In my meaner moments, I think "Misery loves company." Note that I don't mind at all if people *ask* why I'm able to overeat without gaining weight, and will happily share my method. It's the criticism of it by people who are obese enough to have mobility problems that really gets me! I know perfectly well that I'm eating more than they do at that point in time and that it appears weird - but really, it's not if you total it up on a weekly basis.

As an aside, I think that the "emotional eating" is a much bigger part of it for most people than even the insulin cycle. Why? Well, I notice that most obese people are able to control themselves from overeating in public. Surely that means that they're able to control it generally. Which means that it's not driven by the cycle, but by emotional eating. I'm also fully aware that most of my own "social eating" is actually "emotional eating" (having my mouth full means I don't have to make small talk!). But this is a feature of the broader culture, as well: a lot of socialisation is almost forced into a "food event". It's hard to "hang out" with friends and have a cup of tea instead of piling on the junk food along with the rest of them, etc.

So let's see, Friday-to-Saturday, two parties, and went totally wild:
- bowl of nuts + bag of chips as "munchies" (everyone else hardly ate any)
- fish & chips dinner + desert
- a bunch of chocolate that was lying around
- a bowl of grapes
- chicken curry + rice
- a bag of Indian snacks (yummy!)
- a chocolate bar
- a package of nuts
- half a small loaf of bread
- a steak dinner
- ice cream cake

I figure about 8000 calories total. The scale showed 9 lb increase at the end of it, obviously mostly water weight.

Somehow, after this kind of occasional all-out binge, I get genuinely disgusted of junk food for a while after. I've essentially eaten for the week all at once :-).

My mood has been an absolute roller-coaster and it's affecting everything. I've slouched on my gym time and my diet is so messed up lately. This morning I had a bowl of cereal (cheerios) with skim milk. I got to the office and my executive officer had brought in a bunch of Cinnamon Rolls. I think I had three before the shame got to me. I had another one before going to lunch with my boss. We went to a catered event where they were providing samples trying to win a contract. There were so many people in there, I felt super overwhelmed and just sat down with nothing and said I wasn't hungry. Immediately following that, I went back to the office and ate the last cinnamon roll. When I got home tonight, I finally did something right... I made myself some grilled chicken breast and ate about 5 ounces. I have to get back on my diet and exercise regimen, but I'm headed to a field exercise on Sunday that'll last a few weeks, followed by a short vacation, and more field exercises through July and August. I feel gross and I hate it. I've got to just step up and start doing the right things.
