View Full Version : Dying dark hair blonde

Ok right now I am less concerned with highlights and more concerned with getting the hair to a dark blonde color. I think the healthiest thing for my hair is to get all over color as high as it can go. Clearly the highlights were a mistake, they look like shit. I dislike streakiness.
Do you guys think a single process going as light as possible would look bad??
Also, I'm beginning to think my hair looks like shit because it's brassy. I hope my purple shampoo comes soon.
Have you guys ever used Paul Mitchell's Strength shampoo/conditioner/liquid treatment? Or Jioco's Color Endure Violet shampoo?
If you dye/bleach your hair all over it will be REALLY brassy & still not a blonde colour... and will require 2-3 bleachings (which cannot be done same day) to even look like a normal blonde shade. Regardless of using a toner. That's why most choose to just do several series of highlights because it will take 3-4 session anyway to look normal, and it minimizes the damage a lot. Purple shampoos personally did little to nothing for my hair... It more-the-less just prevents your hair from turning brassy over time, but doesn't really change the tone if its already brassy. Its more about the colorist who does your hair.

I think it's coming along real nice, actually. It's obviously not unbearable, you went to work! It's going to come out really pretty when it's done.

So - that looks MUCH better. I think once you get it a cooler tone and a couple shades lighter it'll look awesome!
So weird seeing you with such light hair after I'm used to such dark hair on you. Glad you're already seeing positive effects from the blonde!

^^yup, I actually really like it now but obviously I still want it lighter and cooler. I went to work on no sleep so I just kinda hung back and didn't approach anyone and spent a good portion of the shift in the DR...and I walked with $500. I'm already feeling the effects of being blonde!
Add the fake tits and you're gonna be unstoppable ;D

I'm a licensed cosmetologist, i wish i would have seen this sooner.. I'd never recommend anyone going to a school to get their hair done. You would have been fully blonde in about 2 sessions with a professional, possibly 1 session if you didn't have black dye on your hair. Your color isn't bad though i like it, if you want to go blonde in another session i'd go into a salon because they will make it happen. You pay for what you get pretty much, I know when i was in school ladies would come in expecting this 200$ color when we had cheap products to use, it just wouldn't happen. Just go into a salon :)

Oh noo if i came off rude/snobbish i really wasn't trying to at all I only said that because i had read how much you didn't like your hair in earlier posts and failed to read your posts beyond that. So I apologize for that I should have kept reading I feel like i shot myself in the foot right about now. lol
With that being said I mentioned i liked your color. :) Yes there will be warmth to your hair where ever the burgundy was because of the underlying pigment of the color. Oh and about the semi-permanents they don't leave damage to your hair, what they do is leave a LOT of underlying pigment in your hair. Then your hair ends up needing a lot of toning/ color correcting because of those evil semi-permanents. Red is a serious pain in the ass when i went blonde after being fiery red I used so much ash it looked like avocado on my head. lol But you are correct you should be able to get to the level you desire with the next sit down since you lifted beautifully.
If your leaning towards the cool side and not ashy after this next sit down violet shampoos such as shimmer lights will keep your hair from becoming brassy. When your still strawberry they won't help you violet shampoos are more designed towards lighter levels. Also be careful with violet shampoos if left too long, your hair will have a purple/ grey cast to it. I hope you put up pictures after this sit down so we can all see the results. I'm more then happy to help with any advice I can offer. Once again sorry for not reading all the way through the thread.

Can't wait to see your pics! I can relate about not trusting, I had my hair ruined, still dealing w/it 4 yrs later..
I saw a lady working in a store, she had great highlights, & gave me her stylist's name, that's how I found her.

Yeah the violet shampoo from joice is probably the best one out there I used it a lot, just remember not to have it sit in your hair too long or it will look purple/grey. I didn't use the conditioner though I used paul mitchell's color treatment conditioner, works amazing by keeping your color from fading & healthy. I've had friends use the joice violet shampoo many times then get mad at me for thinking their hair is ruined(if it does happen have no fear it will wash out in the next washes).
The foils are going to look great i always recommend doing them with blondes because what it does is add more dimension to your color so it's a lot better than one flat color. I'll attach my blonde color to show how pretty it ends up rather than one color. I believe i used 2 different types of bleach & along with that a level 20 & 10 developer, the more the merrier because you'll have such a beautiful dimension & definition to your hair. Yeah virgin hair always lifts so much easier then wherever semi-permanent is but no worries with the lifting & foils it will look good. Red is almost as much of a pain in the ass as black, but as long as someone knows what they are doing anything is possible. :)
Here's 1st one you can tell how much ash i had to have to tone down the red, second it was lightened & toned with a bit of warmth to cancel out my super ashy color. Sorry couldn't find any good pics with lighting for the second one.

Aw thank you I kind of wish i still had my blonde, right now i'm just about all red. haha
Yes Paul Mitchell's color treatment products work really well especially their deep conditioners. I use a lot of matrix for my hair now but when i was blonde it was Joico & Paul Mitchell. So you didn't waste any money buying their product your hair will be kept in great condition with the line you bought.
I figured they were going to have to bleach your ends don't worry you'll probably lift to match the top, especially when done with a 30 developer that's a guarantee 2 level lift. Yeah I agree I'm not a fan of minimum highlights also known as streaks because idk i just don't like them haha. The more highlights in your hair the better especially with blonde it looks a lot prettier to see the different levels & looks more natural. Plus if you want to go lighter even after this sit down you can easily get there and won't have to use a harsh developer. Lifting slowly is best when you have had previous color, no one like breakage. :)

Yay progress!! Yep your hair should be in pretty good conditioner as long as your slowly getting to your goal, some people are so impatient about it especially when it goes through an ugly phase. I'm glad you actually understand the process, my sister is my worst client I've ever had...I'm so excited to see :)

It just occurred to me that I've had more customers than ever buy 15+ dances with me since the last stage of going blonde. My guess is that if you combine light hair with subtler makeup it makes you look more trustworthy. I also think customers get off more if an "innocent" girl does low contact dances for them than if a "bad girl" brunette was doing the same. I noticed that when I had black hair men would complain that they thought I would do "more." Now more than a few go on about how they love seeing a good girl act naughty or whatever.
I don't know if you had the same problems as I did with dark hair (it seemed like I polarized customers into respecting me too much or thinking I was DTF) but I'd be interested to see if you notice this kind of change as time goes on. Keep us updated!

I never danced when blonde, but in general, I got a lot more attention/harassment when I was blonde... like in a lustful way. Since being brunette, I get a lot more "culty" men who tend to be looking for a relationship. Not sure if that's correlated or random.

^^I can PM you some this weekend when I'm not swamped with finals. I'm platinum now BTW and I really wish I hadn't gotten highlights. Too much damage on my hair. I also think that using a low developer on my hair for a long time (like...over an hour) was extremely damaging and produced little results.
aahhh I'd love to see! I'm pretty much bleach blonde too now and it took my stylist 4 times (from black/dark brown) with a combo of highlights and base. It looks awesome and there's barely any damage

she was very careful at first. we did some highlights to see how my hair would react and a base at first. and every time after that, we became a little more 'daring' cause my hair reacted so well to it. She made sure not to highlight the parts that were already light and put a lot of time and effort into 'customizing the highlights and base.
Also, my hair is pretty short (a little over shoulder length) and the ends are darker overall than the rest (because the base has been getting more and more platinum) but we're just leaving the ends alone, cause pretty soon they'll be gone because of the trims.
She also "oiled my hair up' with morrocan oil before putting on the highlights and I was pretty skeptical about that but I guess it worked..

Interesting. I used to treat my hair with coconut oil at least 15 minutes before coloring or bleaching because it is supposed to create less damage that way

Coconut oil before bleach or dye is awesome! The people on hairdyeforum.com are big proponents of it, and I've started soaking my hair in coconut oil before bleach bathing every six weeks, and my hair is in great shape and has an unbelievable shine to it.

BTW, was it that morrocan oil they sell at salon for $20 for about 1 ounce? That stuff is amazing! I'm surprised she used that because I always though the silicones in it would make it harder for the bleach or dye to penetrate and have only used cococnut oil on my own hair.

You may not need to bleach. You can buy hi-lift dyes (I believe the common one is Loreal) at sally's that can lift your shade up to three colors. If you are already a dark auburn (warm shade) it may bring you to a strawberry blonde, but certainly you would need to bleach if you wanted a neutral or ashen shade of blonde.
Do your research, read product reviews, etc. before putting chemicals to your hair and let us know how it goes!

When you put the coconut oil in the hair do you shampoo and condition it out and then bleach it? Or do you just kind of towel out the excess oil and then bleach it??
Nuclear Martini
08-01-2012, 06:27 PM
You can put the coconut oil in your hair and leave it in anywhere from 15 minutes to overnight, shampoo and condition as a very effective treatment that works better for my hair than any Aveda or Kerastase product has.
Doing this once or twice a week leading up to a full color change is probably going to get your hair to be much stronger and able to handle the chemical process better.
For bleaching: Apply coconut oil all over, it doesn't need to be sopping wet in oil, just spread it in so it looks greasy/oily. No toweling dry in necessary. Just apply bleach on top.
I prefer to have the oil in for 15 minutes at least before applying the bleach so I know it is already conditioning my hair.
The bleach will "eat" right through it, but for some reason hair doesn't become as damaged in the process.
I read on the longhaircommunity forum that I used to be a major lurker on that coconut oil prevents protein loss so its really great for people who bleach their hair or have damaged hair. People who have hair that doesn't react well to protein treatment generally favor other oils over coconut oil.

Not the original poster and I'm admittedly not an expert but I have bleach bathed my hair and had good results. Some people call it soap-capping.
It is basically meant to dilute the bleach to cause less damage and is usually left on for shorter periods of time. You can do it more often, however, like once a week. It will have a less dramatic lightening result, but will also remove old color. (I did this on my ends to get yucky black dye out before going blonde.) It will lighten 1-2 shades. You mix bleach like you normally would (developer and bleach), but then dilute it with either shampoo or water.
Personally, I like to use shampoo (1 part shampoo to 1 part bleach/developer mix) and use it on wet hair, it gets a nice lather so it's easy to tell that you have applied the bleach everywhere.

Unrefined virgin coconut oil in a glass jar is best in my opinion, for diet, skin, and anything else.
I did get some refined coconut oil because the stupid store didnt have anything else and I needed to tone my hair and have been following the advice of putting coconut oil in before bleaching or toning. I've done deep conditioners, protein conditioners, coconut oil, mayonnaise and a few other things. So far I like the joico protein knock off at sally's for $6 and Aussie's three minute miracle which is $3 but only lasts me five conditionings if I'm lucky.
I've been toning with Wella color charm T-10 (ivory lady?) and alternating it with T-18 (white lady?)
I used thirty developer twice and switched to twenty tonight but my hair looks kinda dark and ashy.
It's still wet though so it should lighten up.
I got the Mrs Stewarts bluing tonight because I was in the laundry aisle getting ingredients to make my own laundry soap (super cheap. google.) I ran across the bluing and it immediately struck me as little old lady blue hair product and lo and behold, it is.
I wanted to see how my toned hair looks before trying it but I squirted maybe two tablespoons of it into an empty deep conditioning canister, added maybe two ounces of basic conditioner and shook it up. it looked VERY dark blue so I added another two ounces and shook it up again and while still very blue, I'm willing to try it on any orange that comes creeping up. It's still very blue like manic panic mid blue and the first try looked like a lighter midnight blue.
Supposedly it's popular for white animals like dogs and horses. That had me running into other google results for what equestrians use on their horses and there's some good cheap (compared to human, anyway) products out there for animal fur that likely works the same on human hair.
anyway, I'll try it in the next few days and let you know. Now I just need a good purple dye for the rare yellowy tinges.

I buy my coconut oil from GNC, it comes in a green plastic jar. Is glass really better?
I have been having problems with my highlights lately. I did them myself with a highlighting cap and a lightener that tones it to a color called "honey". The placement and overall look is great, very natural and blends with my base/roots but they have become yellowy in some places. I even use my purple shampoo (Blue Malva) once or twice a week which is how often I was my hair. I have never toned my hair and I'm worried it will come out too dark. The problem pieces of my hair are turning a drab mustard yellow and even a banana yellow in some places. Also the Sally's by my place SUCKS. The girls that work there don't know anything about cosmetology and the manager is an angry woman.
Does anyone know what I can do to get my highlights to be a "natural" shade of blond.
FiendishGyrator

Please note that I'm not that experienced but I have read A TON before doing this to myself and have had two and a half weeks of experimentation so far.
right when you said banana yellow, that's classic sign for needing toner. I don't know if you're going for beige,
honey, champagne, or what but yellow colors need to be toned out with purple toner or, you can make your own by getting purple dye and mixing into your conditioner--like your purple conditioner you have now. so maybe you're not leaving it on long enough or there's not enough purple to combat the yellow but it just lengthens the time in between toning.
You can look on youtube for toning color wheels. I do think white and silver lady by wella (they're renamed by their T-# is the same, combats yellow. Watch the time so you don't go gray, but if you do it's not that big of a deal. just wash it a few times. I thought ivory lady tackled orange so I'm not sure if it just worked once for me, or if this time there was a lot less lift because I went with a twenty developer instead of a thirty.
I'm not a big fan of the honey wheat I've got going but, my roots lightened up, and my all over hair color is a lot more consistent so I will just rock this until I tone again a week and a a half from now.
Go to amazon and sally's beauty and makeupalley websites to read the reviews on the various wella color charms. just make sure you get their toner and not their dye.
yeah, I agree with the rant about sally's beauty. You'd think they know but I feel like I ALWAYS get steered wrong there, or else they don't want to offer any opinion at all. I want to ask, "you work here. Don't you have a woeking knowledge of what these prodcuts are supposed to do????"
