Immortals...

I don't know, I was practicing my makeup, trying a new color scheme while I was watching. I think I prefer television shows because you get to know the characters over time instead of starting from scratch and having to do the character development thing as part of the viewing experience. Visually stunning, if it was true to the Greek Mythology or whatever it is interesting and I kept thinking how I should read Greek Mythology, learn about it...

Dear John. People can make fun of it all they want, but I love it. I'd definitely recommend it.

They're both based on the same true story. I cried myself to sleep after watching Girl Next Door.

Isn't that the one with Elisha Cuthbert? I mean, I know it was a bad movie and all, but I don't think that it was cry yourself to sleep bad./:O

I'll be watching that ridiculous movie. It looks awesome, lol. Is it made by Germans? There were a lot of German names in the opening credits.

Actually, the producer is from Finland ... but the movie was shot in Germany and Australia.

This film has been trying to get off the ground for the past 5 years ... and was actually funded in large part via individual online 'contributors', of which I am one. It's not surprising that no major film studio wanted to fund this project. The film was reportedly finished on a $10 million budget, but thanks to extensive use of CGI it reportedly looks more like a $100 production.

As to actually getting to see Iron Sky .... from director Timo Vuorensola ...

(snip)Given that it’s a Finnish film, and the buzz has been biggest in here, it’s natural to start with Finland. We’ve managed to stay as the most viewed film in Finland for three weeks so far, fighting off such mega-budget behemoths as Battleship and Hunger Games. So far, the film has about 136 000 viewers in just under 3 weeks. This is an excellent result. The distributor’s official aim was 150 000, so they should be pretty happy. My personal aim is 250 000 – there’s a bit of a way to go there, but it’s not at all impossible. Iron Sky opened with 85 prints in Finland.

So far, the biggest amount of prints and admissions comes from Germany, where the film has been also performing way beyond its expectations – the distributor has bumped up the amount of prints twice to answer the requests. Germany has so far 344 000 admissions, and it’s going strong there constantly. It’s better not to start guessing where it could go, given that I don’t know the market that well, but things are looking good there. The film has been received by German audience extremely well, and this is a big boulder off our shoulders, because – given the subject matter, and the fact that Nazi comedies haven’t been popular there before – we jumped into an unknown territory. Iron Sky has 240 prints in Germany.

In addition to Finland and Germany, the film’s been opening strongly across Europe, although we are fighting with the fact that there’s not too many prints in any of the countries. Austria has now 30 000 viewers (20 prints), then comes German-speaking Switzerland, where the film has been performing excellently given the small amount of prints it has – now 28 000 viewers (16 prints). Norway has 23 000 viewers (24 prints), and Sweden opened strong last weekend, and has already 16000 (46 prints, first weekend), which is a very promising (and quite rare for a Finnish film) number there. Other areas include Denmark with 7000 viewers (15 copies, out also last weekend), Croatia and Iceland with 2000 in both (Iceland with 2 prints, Croatia with 7). (snip)

(snip)"in May the Moon Nazis will invade such big territories as Australia, which is one of the co-producing countries, and had a wonderful opening and reception at Gold Coast Film Festival just few days ago. Also United Kingdom is coming soon – there was a bit of a setback with material delivery, which forced us to push the release date back almost one month, but now everything is settled, distributor has the material and they are doing the release Tetris, trying to nail down the perfect date for UK release. One more area which is coming up, and I’m excited about, is Slovenia, because Laibach – the musicians of the film – come from there, and it just as well could be a great release!

Rest of the world has still to decide the exact theatrical dates. We know that US is coming during the summer, and Japan in the fall, and we are negotiating with others — and still, there are few territories where we haven’t been able to secure theatrical distribution – or distribution at all – which we are working hard. You can view the current distribution status here, and if you want to help, Demand to see the film in your local theaters!

All in all, Iron Sky has been exceeding its expectations, and proven that it’s not just a film for small, obscure audiences, but a film that finds lovers among all kind of people, and that’s what we aimed for. We wanted to do a film that’s hilarious, plays well on big screen, takes the viewer on a good ride and leaves them with a thought somewhere in the back of their heads."(snip)

A major part of my interest in this particular film is that it totally bypasses the 'Hollywood' business model ... politically correct story lines ... multi-million dollar celebrity actors ... shockingly expensive film sets / productions ... in favor of a 'small business' approach that still results in reportedly 'quality' entertainment !

The last movie I watched was "The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo" (American version). I read all the books and I really wanted to see it when it came out in theaters in December, but it never happened.

Months later, I FINALLY just downloaded it. OMG SO AWESOME. Lisbeth is such a badass, and I'm half in love with Rooney Mara, they cast her PERFECTLY for the role. And not many of my friends agree with me, but Daniel Craig is so sexy! ;D

Sleeping Beauty with Emily Browning (Sucker Punch, which I loved the look of and the soundtrack). Sleeping Beauty, although interesting (the plot is about a house of "semi-prostituion in which the girls are drugged into a deep sleep by choice and their clients can do anything they want except for penetration of any kind and leaving marks on their bodies), I found the tone to be very mean spirited and apathetic. A better choice for this kind of subject is "House of Sleeping Beauties" which is made in Belgium. This focuses on an older client more so than a girl working there. Better acting, the lead character is more empathetic.

I do have to say that Emily Browning is the first actress to get on the screen who is so innocently beautiful! She truly makes me feel old:-(

Just watched 'In Bruges' last night. By far, the best thing colin farrell has done, he is great in it. He is a young hitman whose 1st job ended up killing a bystander. He and his partner are ordered to lay low in this small town in Belgium(Bruges) and wait for orders. Funny and a little depressing. Highly recommend it.

I just watched the Avengers thursday night. I usually don't like action movies, but Joss whedon directed and he delivered. :) And Chris Hemsworth is hot. Seeing him in two movies in a one month period is perfect. :)

Love this!! I saw it before it was released at private screening. It was a packed screening. They had a Colin Farrell trivia contest and I won! I got a gift bag full of Sundance swag:-) I so loved Colin in this. Damn he's hot, yet so vulnerable! I met the writer, Martin McDonough. He received his first Tony award at 25 for the play The Beauty Queen of Lianne (sp?). All of his plays are very dark and funny. He's like an Irish Tarentino, but more intelligent. In Bruges was his first screenplay.

^^^^ Will do, thank you!
I love movies about sex work, but really only if they're indie. Hollywood just can't grasp it, and either show it as ultra depraved, or hella glamorous. It gets tedious. Have you seen This Girl's Life? There were some parts that were a bit "meh" (though I haven't worked in porn, so I can't vouche for much, to some parts I really found thought provoking.

Haqeeqat (The Truth)

It is a Hindi movie based on 1962 border clash between India and China. If you do not know Hindi, you should be able to check out subtitled DVD from Netflix.

Here is a scene from that movie:

I haven't seen it, but I will check it out. Right now I'm watching a series from Showtime Australia called "Satisfaction". It's about a brothel in (I think Sydney). It can be a bit soap opra-y. But for the most part, the show is female driven with the men as secondary characters. It's a bit on the glam side, but there are some interesting interactions and situations that come up. Some of them I have never seen addressed, even in documentaries.

^ That movie caused quite a bit of uproar in public opinion in India when it came out. It exposed the Indian PM's incompetence in dealing with security threats coming from China. Many critics credited this movie as a factor which forced Indian policy makers to reverse downsizing of Indian military which was going on since 1947. There are some dramatic scenes inserted in the movie to raise people's emotion especially the last scene where Chinese capture an Indian tribal woman and torture her: (4:23).

---

Here is another good movie that I like. It is called: Hell is for Heroes. I think it is Steve McQueen's one of the best roles. This is the story of an American squad which was tasked to hold off an entire Germany company. Very good story. Good direction. Good acting as well.

---

I have to check out Satisfaction. Where can I catch it? Netflix? Crackle?

My Week With Marilyn. It was a bit odd, in that there wasn't much character development or the usual story arc I've come to expect from movies. It's based on a production assistant for a movie and the diary he wrote about a week spent working with Marilyn Monroe. I don't know much about Marilyn Monroe, but I thought Michelle Williams did a decent job portraying her (or at least what I know of her) and if you like that era of Hollywood it's worth a try. Netflix has it.

Beyond The Black Rainbow. It's an anti-drug movie clearly made under the influence of drugs. Parts of it are mind numbingly slow, highly artistic, sometimes more about the experience than the story, but it all comes together like a fit puzzle, accumulating with a stellar getaway and WTF? moment at the end.

The story centers on the Arboria compound - a research facility with the mission to cure depression through psychology and pharmaceuticals. Only their efforts are clearly torturing their test patient, Elena. She escapes and her caretaker pursues.

Visually and audibly, this movie is a trip in itself – a trip back to 1983 to be exact, with rich colors, sharp edges, and a fantastic synthesizer score. It may be the first sci-fi movie I have ever seen take place in the past, but given the exclusivity of the compound in the story, I can suspend disbelief it ever happened.

This movie is not for everyone, given the slow pace, odd story, and distinct style, but for those that like a sci-fi trip that will blow your mind, I would certainly recommend it.

Just watched the Hunger Games. " may the odds be forever in your favor" that statement just left shivers down my spine every time it came up. It was that gritty depression era feel brought into a futuristic world where children are thrown into battle for survival. It seems as though the adults are playing cruel and childish games. Recommend!

I just saw Rock of Ages. I won't comment too much and spoil anything; however, I will say it's like a cross between Mama Mia and Glee. I didn't even know this film was a musical and I started laughing when the characters broke out into song during the opening scene. If you think this is a rock film, save your time and money and just rent the Wahlberg flick, Rock Star.
