Have you ever noticed there are never dogs in neighborhoods with mexican restaurants?

Ha! I'd love to meet a woman who thought it was weird for a single guy to have a cat, so I could laugh at her.

Well, not really--I'd rather just not meet her.

I can't have a cat right now, due to fact that the apartment I live in strictly forbids them. But I would have one within hours (I mean that literally) if they changed their minds, and actually offered the owner an entire year's rent in advance if he let me have one. He said no. I thought about moving out for this reason alone, but it's the perfect apartment for downtown Key West, and they are really, really hard to find here.

Funny thing is, I was always a 'dog person' and never thought much of cats, until I rescued one from a gigantic tree in Chicago during a party. I was drunk as hell and climbed the tree by pulling down a branch and climbing up it, the trunk was way too big. Then dropped the kitty into the girl who owned its scarf. She said she was actually giving it away and I fell in love instantly and took it home with me that night.

She was so sweet, she would follow me when I rode my bicycle, running down the side of the street. But she was scared of cars and if I kept going and she couldn't follow me without crossing the street she would run back and forth and cry. Damn this makes me sad now lol.

I am a sucker for kitties and will always try to pet them if I see them outside, etc.

^i also have a cat that i rescued when extremely drunk!

the girl who sparked this whole threaad actually replied to this thread, although didnt offer much of an explanation. and she doesnt hate cats-- she actually likes animals. she just thinks it is very strange for a single dude to have a cat.

:shrugs:

its better for a dude to have a cat than an apartment filled with mice.

Are those my only two options a house filled with mice or cats? God, I love ya girl..lol. Let me begin with I am an animal lover! Athena would vouch for that! I feed stray cats, take in kittens, and at one point my family had 6 cats at once b/c me and my sister would have one left over after trying to adopt out strays or injured cats we took in so many times. My last cat passed this year and she was 21yrs old. Just b/c I was concerned I went out and bought Athena's and another friend's cat flea meds after hearing Nola will have it particularly bad with them this year. Also, I wont even get into all the details but I completely spoil my little dog I have now and am always helping out and answering questions for all sort of people with pet issues. Thus don't be mistaken this has anything to do with not liking animals. The single guy with a cat was part of an example of when it comes to sexual attraction(not at all with liking them as a friend..not sure maybe it is a weird concept) that since I moved to Nola most men I meet are the sensitive artist type not more alpha masculine type and when it comes down to hooking-up it just doesn't do it for me. I find more sensitive type(possibly more evolved but that isn't always how being turned on works) are cat owners. Now I added the stipulation if he was a default cat owner by break up with an ex, taking in random stray cat, and really anyway he didn't go out and buy a cat intentionally. It just seems odd to me a grown single man deems his best match at this stage in his life is a furry little kitten and buying liter boxes and cat toys. It is more of sarcastic example in a nutshell about the sensitive guy type and honestly I stand buy it I don't want to date a weird cat guy! The above examples of obtaining and interaction with said cat are what qualifies it to me as a "weird cat situation". Also, another reason for me personally as I am very into my little fur-baby and need anyone I am with to get that and act accordingly in how they treat her(she is super easy to love so never an issue) but she is bold and chases cats. I don't want to have deal issue later with me not being able to bring the dog with me b/c of either her frightening the cats or them scratching her(being she smaller than most cats). It might not seem fair, but that is why I'm not going there. B/C always if it is in anyway "Me or the dog" without question don't the bedazzled doggie door hit him on his ass on the way out...
P.S- I love that this thread was given so much attention and really did enjoy seeing the response:)

:D

OK hold it I know what I said above but I am NOT laughing at you. But I like the way you wrote your response and was genuinely amused in a positive way.

I guess in a manner of speaking I met you here now, and I'm glad I did--again going against what I wrote above--because you were forthright enough to speak openly about how you feel, and you explained it pretty well, and you have a point. And you are correct, 'how being turned on' doesn't always follow the laws of logic or social evolution or whatever.

I came from a family of serious Dog People on both sides, going into extended families--none of my relatives I can recall, out of maybe a hundred or more have had cats that I can remember, and there were many dozens of dogs. My mom and dad both hated cats and sort of tolerated mine when they were around them. So I am a traitor of sorts I suppose. So be it lol.

That being said I am a total pussy when it comes to cats, I will freely admit it. It's this fucking bad--sometimes in the grocery store I get a little sad walking by the pet aisle because I can't have one. I've gone to the 'Kitty Heaven' rooms at the local Humane Society many times and donated money just to sit for an hour or so with all the lost kitties and pet them. And I still dream about my last cat regularly and have woken up crying even (though it's been a while since the dreams were sad). A couple years ago I saved a blind starving cat outside my apartment and risked getting evicted for two weeks by letting it in and paid 700$ to fix his teeth and then was utterly devastated for weeks when the woman I gave him to to take care of lost him within a week.

I have always been a strange combination of Alpha Male and whatever the opposite is anyway ('Sensitive Type'?). Like I hate sports but have used boxing as my main workout for years. I'm skeptical of the vast majority of Alpha Males anyway, it seems to me that the more 'Alpha' they are, the more they are hiding the scared little boy inside under a macho facade. But that's just my impression. And it has nothing to do with the Laws of Attraction for women who like them.

You'd probably like me as a friend but definitely not be attracted which is definitely fine as I'm definitely not here to pickup anyway.

;D

The first part of that segment I understand. The type of guy you're attracted to is the strong man of action and not the sweet, sensitive guy. Okay, that's fine. But then you go onto call the types of guys who own cats "weird." I think this is where a lot of the folks on this thread are having problems. The notion that a guy with a cat might be stereotyped as sensitive/shy/sweet is something that I agree with, and that probably rings true as a rough generalization. But how does that then result in the guy being "weird?" I don't see how those two are related. Why not just say that you're not attracted to the general type of guy who owns a cat and leave it at that? Why does he have to be deemed "weird" as well?

LOL..Your over-thinking it! Also, if being called 'weird" offends your sense abilities maybe stripperweb may not be the place for you.(um, I just read a post on anal bleaching and pretty sure I saw a tag line for anal on cam..This is stripperweb it isn't cat fancy, amazon or your alumni forum and that is sort of mild topic for such sensitivity Keith)This serious cat/dating discussion took place a little drunk and naked at a mostly gay pool party.(I am pretty sure you couldn't shock or offend anyone there very easily) Your right I will try to be more politically correct when I joke about a serious subject like a man's right to cat ownership. Also, if you read the posts I was explaining by another member's request and for some of the girls we made funny comments but wanted to know what stigma might behind it. Let me guess you own a cat and think the strippers at the club you go to aren't trying to hustle but really are interested in dating you? I think it is weird that a grown man is that sensitive about my personal comment or generalization in regard to hypothetical man who I don't hypothetically want to go on a date with..lol

I love animals. If a guy has animals and treats them well that is a huge positive for me. Cats are wonderful pets. I don't think there's anything weird at all about a guy having one. I have known and dated several. I thought this was something only men cared about, but I guess crazy girls with issues do too.

I used to be completely sprung on an alpha male who didn't have a sweet or sensitive bone in his body but did have a cat, and his cat was my buddy. That was years ago and I still miss them lol.

ETA--goddamnit I hate these old bumped threads I forgot I already posted in.

What's REALLY funny is--I was just in the pet aisle by accident today and thought about how I get a little sad every time I go down them--and actually avoid it. Then drove by a new Petsmart type store and had the same reaction about ten minutes later. Yep, I'm a big giant pussy for kitties.

If I wasn't allergic to them I would have a cat. I don't understand why dogs are for men and cats are for women. That is totally backwards. Women need that lovable, loyal, protective german shepherd or Rottweiler that makes them feel safe. Guys need that tabby or siamese that doesn't even know your home, and you can cut open an bag of cat food leaving that open on the floor so you can go camping for a week.

The best pet is to get a kitten young and raise it like a dog.

People think you can't train a cat. You absolutely can train a cat, it just takes a little more patience is all.

left to my own devices, I would have fish. I used to be a cat person, but two crazy-cat girlfriends in a row have left me a bit over it with felines. I still love cats, I would just love to have a break. But I could never have a dag. MAYBE a little one, but even that's pushing it. Dogs are too co-dependent.

I have two cats. We had one when I was a toddler and I grew up with her and a dog. I'm also a believer in pets not being alone so two it is. I'm gone from the house anywhere from 10 to 14+ hours a day during the week and travel constantly at least one weekend a month. Wouldn't be fair for dogs so I have cats. When I am home I can look forward to the following:

Constant demands for attention when they feel like it.
In addition to the cat bed they each have, I also serve as their bed when it starts getting cold due to my comforters.
Clean laundry is also a perfectly acceptable substitute for cat beds.
And so is the linen closet.
And so is my clothes pile while I'm getting ready in the morning.
You have to budget for lint rollers.
But it is nice to have them crawl up on you at night and settle down!

I don't like dogs either. Not really a pet person, in general. A single guy with a pet seems like a single guy with a kid. Except I would understand why the guy kept the kid around. Don't understand why he'd keep a pet around. A cat not only seems girly, it seems like extra baggage... He can't just take off for the weekend or spend the night somewhere spontaneously. He's gotta go home to water and feed his kitty. Clearly, I'm wildly judgement, sexist and mean. Also perpetually single...

Yeah a dog you gotta be there, or else they will poop all over the house and maybe tear shit up too. Cats are fine with a few days away but they usually aren't really happy about it.

I still think cats are way more like people than dogs. I love dogs, don't get me wrong, but no human being kisses ass so much as your average dog. Nowhere near.

I tend to steer away from people who don't like pets, though it's not a deal breaker. But any woman who ever said 'Wow it's a little weird you like cats.' would be history so fucking fast...

This is funny, my current SO has and had 2 cats when I met him (we were friends for a while prior to being in a relationship) and I used to joke with my girlfriends about it, and them with me about how owning cats was a bit effeminate and how the fact that he didn't hit on anything that wasn't a dude was a bit of a red flag....it took me almost a year to get used the the cats (I am a dog-lover), but I feel like an ass for prejudging him based on the pets he owned (which are actually really sweet). He is an ex-marine, so nothing effeminate about him and I guess your pets sorta mimic your personality. I still am a die-hard dog-fan, big sloppy tongue and all! But am less likely to shy away from feline friends.....also I am sure some of my feline-alienation has to do with the fact that my step mom's seemed to always be cat-lovers, bad association LOL.

Well here is the bottom line. You have to get the cat early and raise it the same way you would a dog. Teach it to come when you call, etc. Use the treats and the verbal rewards and the petting to reinforce it. It takes a little more work but it is worth it. Plus none of that whining and yowling to wake you up, no sir.

;D

Teach them to respect you and desire to be loyal. I grew up a dog person so it came natural with the first kitten I had, whom I rescued from a gigantic tree when drunk off my ass. I have had two cats that fetched. It's great fun.

I thought of you all during the height of FantasyFest; while some drunken friends of mine were blathering on and harassing people I spotted a cat about a hundred feet down the road and went to see if it was friendly. Much to my delight, it turned out to be one of those slutty cats that roll all around when you pet them and start doing backflips etc. when you stop.

Cats are the type of pet which do allow you to take off for the weekend and not have to worry about them. Give them extra food and water, make sure the box is clean, and you are good to go.
