Oil doesn't moisturize anything. If your hair is already full of moisture, the oil will trap it in. If your hair is dry, oil will trap moisture OUT.

That's why it's suggested to apply oil to moist skin to trap in the moisture; )

well ive been treating my scalp at home and its getting better... i will try the lightening without bleach in the salon again and if i'm not happy keep improving the condition of my scalp then look for an oil bleach. can anyone recommend me one? i've heard in the past that wella oil bleach is good but they don't make it any more.

How do you moisturize dry hair then? Aren't natural scalp oils made of oil?

I have pretty bad psoriasis on my scalp (I've had it since about age 3 or 4 when normally people don't get it til around 15-20 or later) and genetically thin pieces of hair, but the only way I'm able to moisturize my scalp is with olive argan oil, but it seems to work well for my hair. Also, cutting gluten seems to cut the dryness for me.

Sorry to threadjack but I just joined the blonde club. Apart from homemade bleaching ventures as a little rebellious teenygoth I've never done anything this drastic. I'm kinda freaking out cause the ends of my hair feel funny. Is this normal? They feel really soft. Then small ends of my hair came off when I was combing it. No big clumps but now I'm just wondering if this is what it's like. And how ling should I wait before I go back?

That's normal. Just make sure to keep the ends hydrated or they will continually dry out and break off. You probably want to get them cut often as well. I think they recommend going back every 6-8 weeks minimum for color, but you can get away with going back every 3-4 weeks if you are still trying to lighten your hair all over & its in decent condition. It also depends on the type of hair you have, TBH. I used to get my blonde highlights redone (full head highlights + ends/bangs trimmed) every 4-6 weeks.

try doing a heavy weave highlight with a comb of 2 bleach foils and then the third one another light blonde color - actually I dont let them use foil - ask for rice paper - with the rice paper they dont wrap the whole strand of hair so less damage to deal with - i also never let them process me under a dryer - the only reason they do that is time - I sit the extra 20 or 30 minutes to process out - then i use redkin Kat once a week and moroccian oil after every shampoo - good luck - i have been every color from purple to fire red and i too love my bleachy blonde the most :)

I am so happy to hear that your scalp is getting better. Just remember that you look stunning either way - blonde or brunette.

I hope your head is doing a bit better now. I have dark brown hair and do a double process, so understand how difficult it can be. You should be using skin/scalp safe bleach on the roots, with no higher than 20volume developer. You might have to leave it on a bit longer but it's easier on the hair. Also, try not to re-bleach the hair that is adjacent to new outgrowth (ie hair right after your roots). This will weaken your hair and cause breakage. One great thing to keep in mind is that beauty schools often have student salons where the beauticians in waiting do your hair for cheap. I get a "root touch up" every 3 weeks for $20.00 ($15.00 plus tip).

The big killer for breakage, however, is hot ironing bleached blonde hair. Be sure to use a hot iron with a temp gauge, not a cheapo one (or one of those tiny small ones), because they don't have a gauge. Don't go above 360, and use lower heat than that if you can. My hair has all broken off at the FUCKING CROWN! It doesn't get much more horrible than that. We're talking Billy Ray Cyrus hair (on Doc). I put in extensions to try and conceal it, but the crown is impossible to conceal unless you wear a wiglet, and I draw the line at that. I am going to try skin weft extensions though, which are taped to your hair and don't show at all.

Best of luck.

I am crazy late to this thread but thought I would post in case things haven't gotten much better for the OP. I'm not sure what color you are starting with but going to an Aveda salon changed my life. I LOVE my perfect baby blonde and they don't use bleach. What they use is a high-lift tint called enlightener. Don't get me wrong it's still chemical but the Aveda ethos is to be as "natural" as possible so it is somewhat more gentle and believe me it shows. My hair stopped breaking and is shiny and gorgeous and I color my roots like every 4 weeks. Now I say this because last summer I was broke and let a hairdresser friend color it at home with whatever from the beauty supply. My hair broke off to an inch from my scalp - thank God only the top layer but seriously, lesson learned. I also live in New York, book on Lifebooker and pay less than $100 for a single process. I should add that my base color is a kinda mousy brown so I am not lifting that high, so I can't really speak for the gals going from black to blonde, but hopefully that will help someone!

I used ivory lady to take out orange but left it in too long and it was definitely wheatey-ashy.

I've read on makeup alley about mixing two different wellaa toners to get good results but I go for a white blonde so I'm not sure except you'll need some blue to combat the orange but not too much purple if you want to keep the yellpw blonde.

does anyone know which toner will turn golden/yellow and orange tones into a blonde, but not ashen?

Yes. My formula is mixing 8N (or 8GN if there isn't much warmth left) with 12N, almost 50/50. It creates a slightly warmer version of the Taylor Swift color.
