All of these solutions are great, and I plan on opening a checking account tomorrow.

But is anyone else curious as to why the OP couldn't cash her check at Publix or Wal-Mart...?

I'm sorry, I don't want to offend anyone. But I've never understood why people don't have checking or savings accounts. I've had an account since I was 5 years old. That's all I know. Why would you NOT have an account with a bank? Seriously curious, not trying to offend.

Getting back to the point Isobel made... before we were married my husband and I were looking to buy a house... we found one and pulled all of our retirement funds in to our own separate savings accounts. Contract fell though, and it was a long time before we found another house. When we went to get the funds from my husbands account it was ALL GONE! $4,000 was taken out for child support back pay, and we were never notified. Even though his checks are docked for both CS payments and CS backpay arrears they took ALL OF HIS SAVING! Since then we keep as much of our money OUT of the banks as possible.

Another good reason I can think of... I have friends who work at 3 major banks. I had one call me once to let me know I was on the overdraft list. I HATE that my friends can get noisy and look at my account. Not only would they be able to see salary information, but they can also see where my checks come from. No thanks!

While the payoneer fees do suck, it's not so horrible if you can give yourself a cushion that allows you to wait for the standard $2 load. Once I reach a certain $$$ amount I got take out all of it at my nearest ATM (Make sure to check the price or % you pay for withdrawls so you don't overdraft). NEVER use your payoneer debit card for purchases bc they do tack on a fee PER TRANSACTION!
