View Full Version : Since when is "thick" a compliment

For what its worth Tempest, I totally know how you feel. I hate being called thick (even though I do weight more then I want to right now, so I am kinda thick lol). To me it's like calling me fat. I grew up in an area where being thick was not a good thing so I know where you're coming from! Try not to take it personally though, like a lot of other girls said already it was probably just because of your big boobs!

I personally use "thick" interchangeably with "chunky", so I totally understand why that would upset you, Tempest.

In the UK calling someone thick means that they are dumb or stupid. When i first came to US and a guy told me he liked me cos i was thick.I was like 'fuck off'....I didnt fell that much better when he explained that he didnt think i was stupid....just fat.urgh.
But I do now understand the meaning and it doesnt really mean fat just a curvier body shape which is prized by many men(and women) particualy in black or latin culture. So i dont really think that is an insult.

^ I'm not buying it. The retarded term was used to describe gossip sites, not people. And freakishly thin is a perfectly accurate description of someone as skeletal as Keira in that picture. To put it any other way would be sugarcoating it and understating the truth especially when that type of figure is being glamorized 24/7. A woman that skeletal has a high risk of developing very serious health problems and both she and the media have to be called out for promoting a disturbingly unhealthy concept of beauty for young women.
I do find it interesting that I don't hear all these outcries about triggers here when normal women are called fat and pregnant or when people parrot the delusional talking points from pro-ANA blogs. When I posted before and after pictures of an anorexic woman there were girls coming out of the woodwork to tell me she looks worse when healthy! I don't remember you or anyone else taking them to task for promoting anorexia or telling them they clearly need some help. Amazing how things have changed since I first joined!
I think your selective outrage is based on your agreement with the other side and knowing that facts just don't support that position.
Tars tone I totally understand your frustrations but I think you don't actually get what girls this weight look like. Go to post pictures of you. I've posted 2 recent pics in which I weight 116lbs and I'm 5'7".... Can you honestly say I look "borderline" healthy? I've been less than 113 and the only difference is you can actually see my abs. I have a very fine light bone structure... I'm rarely called skinny. People usually describe me as athletic or fit.
*I just checked and according to BMI charts I'm actually 6lbs underweight... Ya cause I train with weights 4-5 times a week and walk everywhere and eat relatively healthy... I definitely have a lot of health risks.

Sorry wrong when I was 89 -92 pounds I was a teenager and was 102 until I got pregnant. I could never gain weight until after I had my daughter and was on the pill and atidepressants( a sw member I use to travel with use to say how are you not 200 pounds the way you eat. I'm not starving myself that would be unhealthy. To imply that someone who had always been naturally skinny and has a hard time gaining weight is unhealthy is ridiculous and rude! Some people are genetically predisposed to being underweight the same way some are to being overweight or to developing bipolar depression or high blood pressure. That doesn't make any of those things healthy.
If you're prone to being under/overweight you simply need to adjust your diet more than others do to maintain a healthy weight. That's all. If you don't want to, that's your business, but don't tell me it's "impossible". Unless you have an actual disease, it is perfectly possible to gain enough weight to reach a healthy range if you do it correctly and consistently. Plain and simple.
Idk because I never contributed in any threads about obese people but when a poster ( a man no less) is telling females on this board that they are underweight for their height and un healthy is rude and miss informed. Understanding medical issues has nothing to do with a person's gender! I didn't say she's underweight "because I think so as a man".:) I pointed out the medical definitions of those terms and even posted links for people to check out for themselves. This was a very silly thing to say on your part.
You are at grater risk when overweight and they say by being just 30 pounds you increase chances of high blood pressure, diabetes , heart problems etc. All that is true. But how does that refute what I've been saying? Did I suggest people should be overweight? What I'm saying is, contrary to what the media would have you believe, being underweight has just as many health problems associated with it and even has a similar death rate compared to morbid obesity. These are all scientific facts and have nothing to do with me being a male. .
It's unhealthy to starve yourself to be skinny but to make rude comments calling someone they don't know unhealthy is uncalled for. I was teased into my late 20's for my weight I don't need some man here telling me I'm unhealthy that's never seen me.I'm sorry you were teased but my points are medical facts and just because you don't like hearing them doesn't make them any less true. For every skinny girl who gets teased there are many many more normal women who get called "fat" in real life and on the internet based on the type of misinformation I've been talking about. So let's stop the knee-jerk reactions and try to understand the points being made.

Jessica, I haven't seen your pics but your stats put you at a BMI of 18.7 which is at the lower end of normal, but still normal.
As I said earlier, this has really nothing to do with how people look in a pic or what you and I think of their appearance. These terms are defined based on the health risks associated with each weight range. The normal range is called that simply because it has the least ratio of health risks compared to the weights above and below it.
And generally speaking, it is possible to overdo exercise to the point where it pushes the person into an unhealthy weight range and has adverse effects on their heart and other organs. Of course I'm not saying at all that this is the case with you. Just saying I've seen people who are clearly underweight but tell themselves they can't be unhealthy because they exercise.

^ all the charts I'm looking at put me in unhealthy... Just saying. Your not a doctor. These charts are a guideline and that's it. They are there to generalise no doctor is going to diagnose you as being at risk for health problems off a chart... They might explore via tests if someone was in the extreme underweight or overweight category but at the end of the day weight is a number. Some people in the overweight section are still going to be healthy. People in the underweight section are going to be healthy and people in the normal section might actually have health issues. I judge whether or not I'm healthy off my lifestyle... Not a chart.

As for that other stuff, it is charts like the BMI index and body fat percentage that determine if you're underweight or overweight. The tests will show if you have or are on the verge of developing diseases. Go to a doctor and see for yourself.
This is also not about diagnosing anybody or saying they actually have those problems I mentioned. This simply means people in certain weight categories have a higher likelihood to develop health complications, and that what is considered "ideal" is often very very unhealthy in reality. None of these are "my opinion", they're just proven medical facts. And as for "lifestyle", I refer you to the last paragraph of my previous post.
But I also understand some of the reactions here. I see it often in real life.

Yes. It is charts that determine if you are at a proper weight and have a disease. That's why doctors spend 8 yrs in med school...to learn how to read a chart.
ffs...
My sis is a doctor, and I know those charts are useless. The only way to truly tell if you are unhealthy enough to be on the verge of disease is to get blood work done.

It's pretty obvious to anyone who can read English that I clearly said the charts help determine your weight range, but it's the tests that determine the presence of disease. You're either not reading my posts or just don't want to understand anything that goes against what you've bought into.
My sis is a doctor, and I know those charts are useless. The only way to truly tell if you are unhealthy enough to be on the verge of disease is to get blood work done.Actually I'm a doctor too:) Not in this particular field but I am a health professional. And I think I've been pretty effin' clear that these charts don't "diagnose disease". What they show is whether you're at a weight range that increases your likelihood to develop certain diseases. It's impossible to make that point any simpler, especially when some people are determined not to get it.

I think he could have chosen better words to compliment your figure, but either way he was paying you a compliment. Even though the word "thick" triggered negative emotions I think it would be better to focus on the positive side of the statement. Even though you are in the process of changing your body there are many people who find the CURRENT you absolutely sexy and attractive. Embrace that :)

Is this really where we are at this point?
In a world where people are literally HUNDREDS of pounds over weight... yes I'd say that 20-30 pounds could be described as "a few pounds".

Let me take one last stab at this before I leave this thread, since it's becoming depressingly obvious things are beyond just writing stuff on a message board.
I’ll actually use an example that some of you will be less sensitive to. There are many obese people who do not have high blood pressure or diabetes. That doesn’t mean in any way they’re at a healthy weight -- they’re still at a much higher risk of facing specific medical problems. The same goes for people who are underweight. They may not currently have any of those issues I mentioned before, but not only are they more likely to develop them than people in the normal range, they are also proven to have a similar death rate as the morbidly obese.
Just as smoking is unhealthy even if you don’t have any of its related medical issues yet, being obese or underweight is also unhealthy in the sense that both increase your risk of developing serious health problems.
This is just for those who actually care about the facts. Do what you want with it. I’m done. Apologies to Tempest for the threadjack.

I don't think that's necessary true. Someone could be thick as hell and have an extremely low fat percentage on their body. Ever seen the Dangerously Curvy pic thread on here? Most of those girls have extremely low body fat percentages... much lower than a lot of "thin" women. Body fat and thickness are not correlated, though they can be. It all has to do with genetics. Bone shape & size, muscle size, and where you're prone to gaining or losing weight.
Like me for example. Even if I weighed 100 lbs, I'd still be considered thick because I have huge ass hips, a propensity to gain weight in my thighs, and a tiny waist.
"Thick" and "curvy" used to be slang for "hourglass shape" but some asshole women decided to play with "thick" women's insecurities and change the definition to mean fat. Men don't mean it as fat obviously. Only bitter jealous women do. If a guy is commenting on your body, obviously he likes it... or it has some novelty aspect that sicks out (fetish, anyone?). And it doesn't help that very overweight and obese women started using those terms ("I'm not fat, I'm thick!" "I'm curvy, not fat!") because they can't accept that they are very overweight or obese. Not that anything is wrong with that (medical issues do exist out there, and so do genetic predispositions), but I think everyone should acknowledge and accept their body type for what it is.
If your BMI is relatively in a normal weight range, your body shape is NOT going to change THAT much unless you decide to become a die hard bodybuilder or something.

LOL. No really, I literally laughed out loud at this. I spent an entire year trying to gain ONE POUND. ONE. I was never able to gain weight until I went to Basic Training, and that was only because I was exercising for literally 15 hours of the day (at least), which lead me to eat a LOT during meals. Like, I was eating more than anyone, even the guys. After BCT, when I no longer was putting my body through so much stress, my weight went right back down. Regular exercise and a healthy diet leaves me a couple of pounds underweight, no matter what I do. When I had my son, I was 155 at the height of my weight gain. Two weeks after his birth, I was underweight again. I love when people are like, "Gaining weight is easy, you just need to eat more!" If I ate any more, I'd have to buy all my food in bulk just to feed myself. If being "healthy" means going back to pushing my body to the point of exhaustion just to gain that muscle mass, then no thanks. I'll take my "unhealthy" body, thank you. (I realize that this works in reverse for quite a number of large people too; it is just as hard for some people to lose weight as it is for me to gain; I would never call them unhealthy for it.)
That being said... tempest... I am totally jealous of your body. You're what I would consider curvy, and if anyone says anything against your body, you should laugh at them and be like, "Bitch, I turn straight girls on!" :-P

it has to be a cultural thing.. but it also depends on the person whos saying it in my opinion.. some ppl say thick just to find a nicer way of saying fat.. but in most my experience... they refer to thick as hourglass figure or at least bottom heavy in a proportionate manner so either way it comes off as a compliment if you dont mind the body type. i used to have no ass or breast but once i got to h.s everything... i mean EVERYTHING grew.. i tried to lose it all but noticed that when i did lose weight my boobs, ass, and hips still remained big so i learned to embrace it and just tone up everything else so it looked sexy and proportionate rather than sloppy .
i must say tho it is quite annoying. all my shirts are mediums (or sizes 6-8) but i cant fit in any jeans smaller than a 12-14..and if its a higher rise to my waist i have to sew it in to sit right cuz itll be too big. other than that i think thickness is awesome.:bitelip::yummy:

I think it really is regional. In CO I'm thick (anything above a size 2 is thick there, I swear), but in Wyoming I was thinner, where as in Vegas I'd probably be fat. It's weird.
I personally don't mind being called thick by guys who mean it as a compliment. But when guys say it to mean fat, well, that's when I get upset. You can normally tell which way they mean it, by their tone and context.

Lately I've been getting down on chia seeds..... yes, the same shit from chia pets. You can buy a big bag of dry ones from GNC or Whole Foods for around $10, and you only need a tablespoon at a time. Put one tablespoon in a small dish of about 1/2 cup of water, let them soak for ten minutes or so. They expand in size A LOT, and form this gelatinous coating, they absorb all the water. Mix that with anything! They take on the flavor of whatever you put them in, and they fill you up! You can simply add flavoring to them and just eat that, there are hardly any calories and they keep your stomach full. I am mixing it into my protein shakes and using that as a meal replacement. Chia seeds are popular amongst anorexic girls also, that's actually how I found out about them, but they are super high in Omega 3's and other good stuff.
P.S. Tempest, I remember right before I dropped 20 lbs a few years ago and re shaped my body and completely changed my lifestyle, eating habits, etc., a couple at a club I was working at approached me for some dances. The wife was all like, "wow, I think you are so hot, I love thick girls!" and I remember being so upset about that comment, I think that was the final straw for me to start hitting it hard at the gym and dieting like whoa.

Well that woman might not seem fat to you and that's your personal opinion, but she is most certainly medically overweight, which puts her at a higher risk for things like high blood pressure, which is certainly not ideal to most of the women on this forum. lol this thread. I have a body like that and I'm 131 at the moment. I'm not medically overweight and I'm in a good weight range. I haven't been working out, but when I do I don't lose much, but I tone up and stay the same size. "Fat" does not equal bone. Those hips are bone. That ass is genetic. Her stomach is probably flat and toned, she probably has at least C's, and her body is mostly due to genetics. She has a wee bit of cellulite in her thighs, but that is also genetics. Even "thin" women can have cellulite since its genetic.
Also, a lot of that is the angle. She is sticking her ass out and its closer to the camera to make it appear larger than it is. Shes probably 120 - 130 lbs if shes like 5'5"
Men are genetically primed to be attracted to this body type. The stark different between the hips and the natural waist. Ethnic cultures are probably the ones attracted to the ass size. However, women are primed to look at this body and scream "fat" because they are taught that stick thin is ideal. It is for some men, but not to most. I think there needs to be an agree to disagree. Beauty is in the eye of the beholder. And not to mention, I personally think a lot of people on this board border eating disorder. I think we should all remember healthy > underweight BMI.
Arguing about whats attractive/fat/thin/whatever is pointless. But facts are facts. This woman's body probably has a lower body fat percentage than many "thin" women. And by thin I mean straight up & down bodies.

I work with someone who has a body that is very similar to the picture and she is very fat, she is just lucky that it is 100% on her ass and thighs so her stomach is still fall. But she still waddles when she walks and has cellulite everywhere. You are nowhere close to her. I'd say the girl in the picture (and it's really hard to say, because it's very possible that it's been heavily photoshopped), is around 160 if she is 5'4".
Now I need some self assurance...everyone who is FB friends with me, I don't look like that, right???? Because I am very close to the same stats as GR and she thinks that's what she looks like!!! Please tell me I'm right and she's wrong and we are both much smaller than that!!!

http://weblogs.sun-sentinel.com/news/specials/weirdflorida/blog/2012/06/cops_400pound_woman_sat_in_the.html Don't you wanna see this naked }:D
The good thing about that is at 5'5" and 450lbs, she probably has so many rolls that although she was technically nude, there wasn't really anything showing.

lol this thread.
That chick is not 120-130. I have a few pics in the ass pic thread and one I 'm bending over and my ass does not look like that and I was about 114-115 in the pic. I agree she has a small waist and we can't see her whole body but she looks way bottom heavy. I worked with a girl like that but she was toned and muscular but you could see as she got older were her weight would go but she was tight. That pic is more like how kim k is heading and I said years ago when kim k got older being bottom heavy wasn't going to look good, it was only going to get worse if she didn't take care of herself. It is sorta genetic being pear shaped but it depends on how /well you take care of yourself.
