Looks like people are going to ditch skype. Alternatives? Google talk and Jitsi.

stories like this make me lol. skype is ace. ppl jsut want to look for something to bash. their is no privacy on the internet, ppl should get used to it. the more ppl want to hide who they are and what they do, encrpyting their stuff etc the more it alerts the authorities to them. (if they see an email with high encryption being sent, it sets alarm bells ringing "what have they got to hide") same with photos that contain data (steganography). as for privacy. google????? WTF!!!! they use data in my emails to target me with adverts lol. the general rule is that if what you are using is free, then you, not it, is the product, you and your data are being made available to advertisers. if ppl are that worried about things they do online, they should probably take a good look in the mirror and change themselves

Agree with the above... I never expect any privacy with anything I get for free.

Google (Gmail, Gtalk) and Microsoft (Hotmail, MSN / Live / Lync) mine data from conversations for the purpose of targeting you more effectively with their advertising.

Alternatives? Don't use their services.

http://www.google.com/intl/en/policies/privacy/

"We collect information to provide better services to all of our users – from figuring out basic stuff like which language you speak, to more complex things like which ads you’ll find most useful or the people who matter most to you online."

http://privacy.microsoft.com/en-us/fullnotice.mspx

"We also deliver advertisements (see the Display of Advertising section below) and provide Web site analytics tools on non-Microsoft sites and services, and we collect information about page views on these third party sites as well."

There is a big difference between listening in a private conversation and dating mine/ad tracking . Skype has encyption. What is the point of having encryption if someone can listen in. Data mining only track your browsing habits and there's way around it. There's an addon called ghostery and also most browsers have Do not track me feature.

Skype isn't necessarily free. Some people use it to make calls to land line, so they are charged by the minute. Yes skype to skype chat is free.
Once again microsoft screws up there's a new skype exploit.

New Skype Exploit Can Reveal Users’ IP Addresses

Also another skype exploit that send the message to wrong contact.

Totally agree, there is a huge difference between eavesdropping on a phone call, and mining data / tracking web site usage. I'm referring to the latter.

Addons like ghostery work for cookies & such, and fiddler is ok for monitoring your system's network usage, though neither of them can prevent the mining of emails & instant mesages, that stuff happens server-side.

I myself wouldn't use Skype for voice calls; I've read way too many "My Skype account was hacked" posts for my comfort.

I use tails live cd because it's clean. When i want to shop online or i want to write a private email with pgp encryption. Anyways I don't do online banking and i don't use cell phone. The problem with skype is that they installed backdoors so the government and most likely hackers will use it to their benefit.
You can use sandbox to prevent getting any collection data. Sandoxie on windows.
When I do a lot of surfing I prefer to use a live cd. They can data mine me all they want because I do things to throw them off. :)

You hit the nail on the head.

So many technology firms make backdoors because they have to, and so few end consumers realize that those backdoors mean their emails are read by both cops and criminals.

Here is Google's notorious backdoor for Gmail...used by Chinese hackers:

My employer still doesn't understand why I insist they send my tax information to me via snail mail, instead of emailing me a .PDF :(

Well, to be blunt, your employer is an idiot. The IRS doesn't conduct any business via email and with good reason. At this point, all of the companies I do work for accept my invoicing via email and e few of them even direct-deposit my payment but NONE of them send me my W-2 or 1099 via email. It's done via the USPS, the way it should be.

One of my credit card companies can't wonder why I refuse to signup with a web account. Or my local bank offering free web access to my account. I know if a hacker got into my account my money would be gone. The only thing I do online with funds is buying stuff online with credit card but I'm protected. I haven't been using gmail anyways just using my ISP email. I prefer to use opensource software like fedora.

There is a reason why they are required to put in a back door, all I can say it's politically motivated but that's politics not about computers really.
We no longer have rights that we think we have it's all an illusion.

Btw I would never efile my taxes. I'm not that stupid yet plenty of Canadians do this every year. Maybe I'm just too paranoid.

Well, to be blunt, your employer is an idiot.

That is the general opinion around the office - the idea the CFO had was to save money by having us register at a 3rd party website, http://pdftaxforms.com/, then that website would email us our 1099s.

I (and one other) refused; I suggested they deduct the cost of an envelope & a stamp from my paycheck to offset the cost.
