Hi all :) I've been reading on this forum for about a week now, doing as much research as I can. I'm on SSD and have a son who gets his insurance through Medicaid, therefore the state. I've been trying to find threads on this topic, but had no luck. I really want to do camming but I can't afford to loose my SSD, not for the money, but for my insurance. If they take away my insurance, they'll take my son's. I know they would find out about it because of
taxes and I'd also probably be in deep trouble for keeping this from them. I'm torn on what to do. With my disability (im bipolar) I have guaranteed insurance for my son, from what I've read, camming isn't promised money. Is it worth it for me to stop my SSD and cam and just buy my sons insurance? I also heard there's a certain amount you can earn camming before you have to pay taxes, is this true? If so what is the amount? I'm sorry for all
the questions, I'm just very conflicted right now on what to do. Any comments/advice appreciated,
thank you

You can earn up to $400 in a year as a self-employed person before you need to report the income to the IRS. You have a lot of other credits going for you tax-wise, so while you may need to file, chances are you'll get most back (with extra) up to the $20-30k range. There's no way of telling without looking at your tax situation in detail.

SSD and state insurance (and nearly all US social programs for that matter) do have monthly allowances that you are allowed before they reduce your benefits at all. This means that the first X amount of earnings per month don't count when they assess your benefits. It may be a straight dollar amount or they may have a formula based on your rent/utilities/local cost of living - depending on the state and which program. If you do choose to cam, you can control your earnings easily to never hit that limit...but it takes keeping careful track of your income sources and stopping for the month when you hit the wall.

@Xkate - As far as Medicaid, it's supposed to be available to a few groups of low income people: pregnant, disabled, over 65 years old, and under 18 years old. Whether it covers parents and other "able-bodied" adults, and at what income levels, varies a lot from state to state. If you were no longer receiving disability, you wouldn't fall into one of those categories, so they might discontinue Medicaid for you.

However, assuming that your son is under 18, he would still fall under a covered category, so his eligibility doesn't change regardless of whether you qualify as disabled or not. The good news is that the income limits for children are usually higher than for any other group, so you'd be making reasonable money before he lost his Medicaid.

Of course, pretty much everything is up in the air with our government right now. If they roll back Medicaid expansions, that shouldn't affect your son's eligibility. But if they make Medicaid a block grant program, I suspect the entire Medicaid system will fall into chaos, and it's anyone's guess what happens then. If it's no longer a mandatory program and there isn't adequate funding, you could have states that award Medicaid on a lottery basis, or first come first served; some might cut their payments to doctors so much that no doctors will accept Medicaid patients; some very conservative states might try to get rid of Medicaid all together.

Yes be sure to report all your income. And especially file your taxes to begin with. My father used to be self employed years ago and neglected to file taxes one year. So the IRS came after him and he had to pay penalties. Work as little or as much as you feel comfortable with but if you're gonna take on camming full time be sure to have other back up eggs apart from cam so if cammings slow you have something to fall back on. Good luck!

Hi you guys thanks for the responses :) I've called my social security office and I'm allowed to make 1,170 a month while on Ssd..so I suppose my goal would only be about $250 a week. I have my son at a babysitters onr day A week which would give me a full day to cam... I could also try 2-3 hours at night when he's in bed. Do you think it's worth it for 1g a month? I'm saving for a BBL so I can use The money, it's just so upsetting to see the potential earnings and not be allowed to make it.
