I talked to my lawyer about this and he said that as an independent contractor you owe taxes to your home country on any earnings you make as a remote worker even if you travel outside of your home country. As long as the employer gets your w8ben form they are in the clear for taking taxes out of your income.

So, as long as you don't stay in the USA for longer than 6 months, you can work as independent contractor remotely and you would declare your taxes to Canada. This may all change if Trump manages to kill NAFTA.

Skipped reading this one somehow--if you exceeded the criteria in my last post (hard not to in six months!) you might be required by the US to file taxes there, and could be very easily violating a tourist visa (or your lack of one, given Canada). You shouldn't have to PAY taxes to the US in most cases because of the deal with Canada, that's totally correct. The IRS/USCIS probably wouldn't notice anything because you wouldn't be sent a 1099, but for anyone planning on immigrating later like OP or who just likes to be extra careful, watch out with that. They WILL deny you a green card/citizenship for unpaid taxes.

Hi everyone

Im a Canadian camgirl living in B.C and camming/selling my vids is my only income the last 4 years now.

I live in B.C Canada, and was wondering is I need to apply for a GST/HST number?

Ive never even heard of one in my life until today when I got a notice in the mail from the Canada Revenue Agency telling me that Im not registered with a GST/HST number and that I need to call them about it to get one. Im kind of freaking out, I imagine if I DO need one that ill have to owe GST/HST taxes from the 4 years now that ive been self employed? (I make over the $30,000 mentioned each year)

Of course I file my regular taxes but this GST/HST one im unfamiliar with, not sure why I wasnt notified sooner about it by Canada Revenue Agency or my tax filer?

Of course ill phone and ask tomorrow about it, but im just curious what any of you ladies have experienced with this.

Thanks

Find a local accountant. Getting a HST number isn't a bad thing is just means your self employed is growing if your income is able to make a profit of $30,000 Each year is different. So an accountant will keep you on track.
