I talked to my lawyer about this and he said that as an independent contractor you owe taxes to your home country on any earnings you make as a remote worker even if you travel outside of your home country. As long as the employer gets your w8ben form they are in the clear for taking taxes out of your income.
So, as long as you don't stay in the USA for longer than 6 months, you can work as independent contractor remotely and you would declare your taxes to Canada. This may all change if Trump manages to kill NAFTA.
Skipped reading this one somehow--if you exceeded the criteria in my last post (hard not to in six months!) you might be required by the US to file taxes there, and could be very easily violating a tourist visa (or your lack of one, given Canada). You shouldn't have to PAY taxes to the US in most cases because of the deal with Canada, that's totally correct. The IRS/USCIS probably wouldn't notice anything because you wouldn't be sent a 1099, but for anyone planning on immigrating later like OP or who just likes to be extra careful, watch out with that. They WILL deny you a green card/citizenship for unpaid taxes.
