Holy shit, and to think I've been scared of hurricanes down here! Thanks for posting all the pictures everyone. So sad to see the destroyed homes. So cool to read about the nurses taking care of the newborns trying to breath.

I have a friend who works with dispatch in NYC, he was in the force for many years. He was saying that in many ways this was worse than 911 (except of course the loss of life which was so far beyond anything Sandy did).

I'm glad all you NYC SWers are OK!

^ So sad. It's bad enough she is going to feel guilty about what happened (not that she could have done anything) but to have people just turn their back on her at her worst moment. So f'n horrible...

Did you see that dirtbag on CNN? The reporter ambushed him and got him to admit he saw the family outside and refused to let them in. Fuckin' animal. The cops wanted to arrest him but technically they can't. But now that he's been on tv, I know somebody will go over there and give him a beating.

I have to give these guys an A for effort !!!

(snip)"Robbers have been posing as Con Edison workers to steal from homes inside the black-out zone of lower Manhattan, making residents increasingly worried for their safety as they enter the fifth day without power.

There has been relatively little crime reported in an area where the majority of homes and businesses were cut off after a substation blew when it was flooded during Hurricane Sandy.(snip)

(snip)One resident told the Wall Street Journal that more security personnel had been brought in after nearby buildings reported the people posing as Con Ed workers got into homes claiming to be fixing the power.(snip)

Indeed there have been very few reported crimes related to Hurricane Sandy in US media. That report actually comes from the UK ...

And this comes from UniVision ...

(snip)"Looting is not unique to Sandy's aftermath. In the wake of Hurricane Katrina, and Hurricane Irene, dozens of looting incidents were reported in New Orleans and New York City, respectively.

The New York Daily News caught up with an alleged looter on Tuesday, who defended his actions, saying, "Look, they've been looting our wallets for too long,"as he took a TV from a Rent-A-Center in Coney Island. "It's about time we start taking this sh—back," he added.

Witnesses of looting near Coney Island told The Wall Street Journal that it was occurring in plain sight, and that police officers did little to stop it.

"When I came out at about 8:30 a.m. this morning, there were people coming out of all these stores, guys carrying Hefty bags," Roger McKinon, 40 years old, who lives in Coney Island told the Wall Street Journal. "The crazy thing was, there were cops around but all they were saying is get out of here, go home."

The NYPD did not immediately respond to request for comment."(snip)

He has NO sympathy what so ever! You know he's lying about the person being a man who threw the pot. Fkn asshole.

I hope that someone does a lot more than just give him a beating. What a raging sissy. "I'm not a rescue worker. If I went out in the storm I'd be dead" he whines like the little girly man that he is. Two children drowned to death because this guy did not have the balls to go out into a little wind and rain in order to help a desperate mother. Pathetic little worm.

On a good & positive note....

I am very proud of my sister in law.

She is an "at home mom" with my 7 yr old niece & 3 yr old triplet nephews living far in the burbs in PA, she drove all the way to NJ to volunteer and bring us gas. Her & my brother live almost 2 hours away. She spent the whole day cooking at a church in Newark yesterday. The day before, she did something for Hoboken. She left the kids with me and my mom, while my brother is working overtime.

So proud to have ppl who care in my family. :)

I'm kinda annoyed at some of the snooty & uppity mid-town folks who are acting like nothing happened bc they didnt get affected. Kiss my ass. At first I thought, next disaster I'm flying out of town but after seeing the distructions on tv and around me I changed my mind.

As far as I can tell, down here there are two choices--stay here and tough it out with power loss for a week or two, or worse yet risk getting hurt in one of the ones that actually do some damage every 50 years or so. Or you can sit in evacuation traffic jams for hours in shitty, nasty weather on the causeways, only to pay out the ass for some crummy hotel or maybe stay in a public shelter with a bunch of smelly people and screaming kids.

The year before I moved here the island got whalloped and a lot of people I know lost everything, but I don't think anyone was killed and most of the damage was from flooding.

I'm inclined to stay, unless they make me leave.

OK, now I know I'm not overreacting. I noticed that some channels like Headline News and Weather Channel have been staying in Mid-town and Hoboken and interviewing people there for days. It started to annoy me. If you're going to help and cover the story then go to the areas that are struggling NOT Mid-town!!! They're interviewing the wrong people!! Right next door in Jersey City, it's still a wreck and they're living under curfew. Bayonne's flooded. Newark residents are desperate for power, food, clean water. If you're in a high rise the water pressure is gone AND you have to go up and down a million stairs in the freakin' dark. My mom has had no power for days in PA and is living off her generator and firewood and that's no picnic. People in Union Beach lost HALF the TOWN! 200 homes wiped off the map and reduced to rubble. The South Shore and Midland Beach and New Dorp in Staten Island is STILL flooded--their misery is happening in the here and now. People were still trapped in their homes. It doesn't flood down there like that so no one expected to have to be cut out of their attic! Now that's a story, not some douchebag who can't get his usual latte.

Indeed the US mainstream news coverage in regard to Hurricane Sandy has been FAR different than US mainstream news coverage of Hurricane Katrina. This not only applies to unreported crimes, but also to unreported lack of gov't relief efforts, and, as you already cited, lack of reporting regarding the devastation in many areas that aren't of apparent 'headline' interest to US mainstream news media.

Worse yet, weather forecasters are already warning of a second storm, with very cold temperatures, hitting the same area in the next few days. This is likely to not only place a further strain on the millions of people who are still without power, heat etc., but will also further delay the repair efforts of electric line crews, gas crews etc. The northeast in November is NOT Louisiana ... people can literally die of hypothermia. At least Djoser and I have the luxury of walking around in shorts to survey the storm damage around us.

As to 'broke strippers' throughout NY and NJ, unfortunately that situation isn't likely to turn around on a dime the minute that power is restored to the clubs. Even if they were insured, strip club customers will undoubtedly be forced to absorb some personal costs to 'make good' their damages i.e. houses, cars, appliances etc. As Djoser already pointed out, many are also being forced to pay through the nose for hotel rooms and other 'extraordinary' storm related expenses, which is rapidly depleting their available cash. And of course there are millions of NY and NJ strip club customers who haven't been able to get to work for the past week ( thus no paycheck ), and many others who literally no longer have a place of work left standing to go to even if they could get there. if the post 9/11 'recovery' is any example, it will take many, many months for the economics of the area to actually start improving. I don't mean to 'depress' anybody unnecessarily, but the first step towards dealing with any problem is knowing that it exists.

Near my house in northern NY ( which I still own ), everybody was used to these sort of disruptions happening on a regular basis. I had two generators, 200 gallons of gas, my own water well with two pumps, my own septic system, a pantry and two freezers with easily a month's worth of food on hand, a wood stove, steel beams in the roof to hold up against high winds and 6 ft of snow in a single night etc. And if worst came to worst, all of the neighbors knew and trusted each other ... and were very willing to provide mutual assistance, from cutting up and moving downed trees blocking roads to ( armed ) defense of the neighborhood against would-be interlopers.

But today's cities and suburbs have nothing like that level of self-sufficiency. They're dependent on regular deliveries to grocery stores, gas stations etc. They're dependent on electric and gas service. And for better or worse they're dependent on police protection and gov't assistance to maintain 'order' even under normal circumstances. Some 'talking heads' have described this situation as 'nine meals away from chaos' ... and at this point the disaster situation has gone on twice that long already. Let's hope that relief and recovery efforts start to 'turn the corner' pretty quickly in those cities and suburbs affected so badly by Hurricane Sandy !!!

You are so right - the media goes for the easy inexpensive story - mostly about themselves! and they don't cover what is actually happening. I still don't have power from the grid (my neighbors are letting me use their power) but I am lucky that we dont have damage to our home - but many others around me were not so lucky. And now a Nor'easter may be coming! Yep its climate change!

I feel bad for all the people who have lost income and have no place to get relief. You are so right how about self sufficiency .... We are going to keep getting hit hard by theses types of storms so it is a good to start thinking about preparing for the ones.

Lol. Oh, I know some mid-town folks complaining that they can't get a StarBucks latte while ppl blocks from them are freezing in the dark with no food and water. Un-fucking-believable.
