That's... a lot of grey. First, dude, I commend you - takes GUTS to post pics of yourself and open up to a free-for-all on your style. I know how you feel. Been there.
If you're shopping at Costco, then I'm guessing that for most of your life, clothes has been mainly utilitarian. You wanna look okay for as low a price as you can get without looking like a hobo.
I'm here to tell you............FUCK THAT.
Even as a straight guy, clothes can be a part of how you express yourself. Some guys don't give a shit and that's 100% fine. Nothing wrong with that. But you give a shit otherwise you wouldn't have posted. So it's time to change your thinking. Stop thinking of clothes as shit you wear and start thinking of it as an extension of YOU. Don't get me wrong - I love sweats as much as the next guy, but there's a time to wear sweats and a time to look good.
I have homework for you. Go watch CRAZY STUPID LOVE. Look at how Steve Carell is dressed in the beginning. That's utilitarian. Then notice how Ryan Gosling is dressed. That's art. Listen to how he explains clothes to Steve. It's a good explanation, albeit pretentious, but he makes good points. I actually like Gosling's style in the back half of the movie as he relaxes and gets less fussy. Next, watch DEVIL WEARS PRADA. Yes, it's girly. Yes, it's about women's fashion. But it's actually a good flick and by the end of it, you will understand how much of a difference clothes alters your appearance.
Btw, judging by the photos of what you like, I'm guessing the reason why people have been saying your look is generic isn't due to a lack of style. I think it's due to a lack of exposure. The first truly fashion-conscious purchase I made was a pair of black/grey hi-top Penguin sneakers. They're normally $75. I got them for $40 on ruelala.com. I didn't even know what the fuck Penguins were other than the birds in the snow - but other people did, and when I wore them, for the first time in my life, I got complimented on my shoes. By women. Dude... it's a nice feeling. Just by joining that site and looking at what truly good clothes looked like, I got a better knowledge of what's out there, what looks good and most importantly, WHAT I LIKED. You'll discover brands you never heard of. It's the difference between knowing Victoria's Secret and La Perla (look it up). You don't have to buy anything, but you'll gain a better visual frame of reference when you're shopping in your price-range.
Next - someone else said it first - make sure everything fits. What's the common factor in all the pics you posted? Good fit. Snug. Not West Hollywood snug, but comfy with clean lines. There are million websites about what a good fit should look like. Here's a good one on dress shirts: http://www.gq.com/style/style-manual/201204/shirts-guide-sizing-fit#slide=1
In terms of money, yes, you'll have to spend a little more than Costco prices, but you don't have to break the bank at all. There are a ton of sites to help you save - jackthreads.com, ideeli.com, etc. Go to the outlets - check the sales racks. Some of the best jackets I own were found at the discount racks. I once found a $250 CK jacket for $75 because one of the silver buttons was slightly scuffed. Guess what? It's on the inside sleeve - no one's gonna see that! Just remember: if you don't LOVE it, don't buy it.
Final note on brands: who gives a shit. Really. The only reason I pop for branded stuff for certain items is because I want a better fit and something that'll last longer so I don't have to replace it in a year. That's all. Taste has nothing to do with price. People who flaunt brands want others to think or know they're rich. My response: "You're rich. Good for you. That's still an ugly shirt."
And for God's sake, don't become this guy: http://news.yahoo.com/blogs/lookout/buzz-bissinger-addiction-shopping-designer-clothes-122050955.html

Kessler, thank you a bunch. That is a wealth of information you have provided. I will do my homework and look into those websites. Ha Penguin sneakers huh...La Perla, no clue but I will after looking them up. Thinking about it now, your description of utilitarian is spot on....I never put much thought into my personal style/clothing because I wanted to blend in, keep things simple, and well it just wasn't a priority. Now that I am starting to care more about my appearance (gotta put some effort to look my best) I am being more adventurous in that department. I find that I always end up gravitating towards the streetwear side...as long as its looking more matured via omitting the bold graphics/text. Here is what I mean:

Oh and looked up Penguin sneakers:

^My last time sporting a flat billed hat/snapback.
It was fun while it lasted but I am just not a hat person...head gets hot and my scalp starts to itch. I would like to add that the girls at Starbucks and In-N-Out Burger complemented me on the cap...and these girls were not in their teens. I would say mid to late 20s. I wish more older women (not the high school girls) were into that look ie Streetwear but thats far and few in between it seems.
Kessler

Streetwear can be cool, but it doesn't have to be boring or ill-fitting. That Grind Magazine cover - check out the jacket on the left - notice the pattern on the sleeve, the patches, the slimmer cut. Really dig that jacket. I want one now LOL. Check out Jay-Z's outfit here: http://cdn01.cdn.justjared.com/wp-content/uploads/headlines/2008/04/jay-z-wedding-ring.jpg or here: http://www.inquisitr.com/wp-content/2012/07/Jay-Z.jpg
And yeah, that shoe is pretty close - cloth top, leather straps, darker colors.
Be aware that if you're gonna go more street, you'll be perceived as being on the younger side. Celebrities can get away with it because, well, the name of the game is to look perpetually young and cool so you stay relevant in the marketplace. Going back to Jay-Z - the man is 43. I don't know a lot of 43 guys IRL who can get away dressed like that.
That being said, if that's your style, if that's you, then run with it. The fun part is finding ways to elevate it into your own look!

Ditto Kessler, Im liking that jacket as well. I like the color (black is my favorite color), the diamond quilt esque looking sleeve/shoulder area, the patches are a nice touch.
I can see what your saying by being perceived as more youthful with the streetwear style, maybe because it usually sported by the younger crowd. And while there is no age limit to that genre, I would say it would be good for the common person up to 30 years old. After that, leave the clothes to the young men/women. I feel on the other hand the corporate/business look can age a person...especially the shoes. But if rocked right, it really makes the man/woman look sharp and credible. I was just thinking about Jay Z, Snoop Dogg, Dre Dre, Eminem and the like...they still rock those fits that the younger crowd sports but it works on them. Guess because they are artists/celebrities and its always a special exception for those people. I do see some 30+ crowd in my area rocking the streetwear style more specifically just a snapback/fitted cap from New Era and the like. I think in that respect...just the hat is more acceptable. Now if they were sporting graphic tees and some nike dunks/supras/etc. it would appear as if they are hanging on to their youth which is long gone. I believe people should be able to do whatever makes em happy as long as it hurts nobody else but in society we judge by appearances. I mean as long as someone has clean clothes on free of stains/rips/tears/etc. then its fine with me. Sure it might not be age appropriate but if they are happy and a good person to society...it doesnt matter. I dont want to have to change myself for a woman, no man should and vice versa for the women...but in some ways we do. We conform and try to fit in because thats what society/cultural norms expect of us. I think I am just rambling on/looking into this matter at hand to much (over examining) but yeah. Its like most older women say they are turned off by swag but imo if I was a girl, that would not be the defining point in my decision. Here is my friend Wes with his wife...they like the same style so it works for them. (both are late 20s)

If you want to see the kinds of things in style, they released a list today of the celebrities whose style is most searched online. Here's the results:
The top 10 most searched for male celebrity styles over the past three months were as follows:
1. Zayn Malik
2. Nick Grimshaw
3. David Beckham
4. Harry Styles
5. Chris Brown
6. Justin Timberlake
7. Joey Essex ('TOWIE')
8. Robert Pattinson
9. Marvin Humes
10. Bobby Cole Norris ('TOWIE')
I think the list is very on point. So I'd personally just google any of them and look at the types of things they wear til you find stuff you like. Then build your personal style off that.

the biggest thing at this age is fit. it may be uncomfortable and feel snug at first but that's because you aren't used to it. it's also important not to overdress. sometimes i have a chuckle at some of the shooters with pocket protectors in their blazer.
you want some good fit stuff that is very affordable? go to Tristan, Ted Baker, Diesel. The fabric is important too, like H&M just feels cheap. you dont necessarily need expensive brands as it's not always better (my Hugo slacks wore out faster than my zara slacks :o )

Try vintage, dress like your grandparents! Try suspenders or loafers or a vest, some accessory that makes you look exotic or different- like some bracelets or a classic watch or a leather belt or something. I like it when someone looks hot but also a little bit like they time-traveled... that's an easy fantasy.
Or when you go someplace new, some other city, state, or even country- go shopping there, but buy something that you can only get there, and not where you're normally from. Those will also be good conversation starters, when someone says, "i like that," or "where did you get that?"
Maybe instead of denim jeans think about some other fabric... corduroy or wool or even polyester. Natural fibers are generally "classier" than synthetics... also more expensive, but you could try thrift stores or secondhand. I think more expensive, classic-style clothing is worth buying if they last longer and you can wear them for 10+ years instead of just one or two.
I like that pic of TI with the glass, that look would work.

GlamourRouge: Thats a good idea, thanks for that. I will look em up and see what suits my fancy.
ArmySGT/Kessler: I'm definitely a fan of the business look, and I think those thin ties look so much better than the wide ones. Preference is all.
shasta: I used get banana republic t shirts as presents in the past, just nice plain solid color ones in blacks/greys.
Urbanozz: Thanks for the tip and yes I understand the initial uncomfortableness with the tighter fit...its not a bad thing just not something I am used to but in my opinion it does look better...more "tailored" looking and form fitting but not being to tight either, just right.
unbeleavable: Thats a good thing I would say, experience is a lesson.
yinyang: The vintage look sounds good, just as long as it doesnt make me look like an old man haha. But I catch your drift. The glasses on T.I. are nice, I like em too. I like the corduroy suggestion, maybe that in a dark navy blue or dark heather grey will look nice.

simone87: I agree, white tees that are fit nicely make a man look fresh and clean. Also it shows off his physique if he has a good build where as black tees would hide his good features. I like both but when I wear white tees I feel more self conscious but everyone says they like me better in white tees since it works with my tan skin and makes me look cleaner. It also makes me look more athletic in the chest/back/shoulder area but my arms look true to size.

Lol you're probably so annoyed of my opinions right now, but I think white tees DO go out of style unless you're channeling something. The above picture is really retro, and I feel like it would look out of style if you didn't have the hair to match so it looks like you are channeling something retro. Its all about picking a style of dress (either a decade or period style, style of your favorite celebrity, or trendy in general), and then making it your own. But it will look dated or out of place if you just throw a bunch of things together without a particular look in mind.

^^^ The first pic and the last pic are really trendy. V-necks, long hair on men, what looks like high-waisted shorts on the girl. Thats's why they can pull it off. Instead of channeling something retro, they are following things that are trendy right now. So I guess they are channeling the 2010s lol. You can wear basic stuff, but you have to at least be wearing a couple other articles of clothing that are trendy NOW, or channeling some retro era, in order to pull it off. Otherwise it looks sloppy, dated, or that you don't really care about what you look like.
The middle 2 pictures look dated to me.

Cool so I will look into v necks like the first photo, I really like that look. And the female in the last one, now that would be my style if I was a lady.
I was initially against v necks because the ones I have seen guys wearing have sloping/plunging neck lines and show to much chest, the one picture above is what I would prefer. Also it appears to frame the face too which is nice.
However I still kinda feel they might look feminine/girly/gay (nothing against gays) and it seems the majority tends to think the same:
http://answers.yahoo.com/question/index?qid=20090409155344AATctpF
*Now I will give it a shot though and see...like I mentioned as long as its not a plunging neckline I think its fine.
I understand at the end of the day the choice is mine and others should not influence the choices I make but in reality that is the truth for all of us. We are constantly influenced by what is the norm for looking good, the accepted/yay...the hated/nay. We turn to magazines, media, and of course the obvious in what we see first hand to shape our style. Just some 2 cents.

I meant to post this earlier but I forgot. You're from Northern California, but are you from the Bay Area? If so, go to San Francisco and then to the Mission District. Shop in all the vintage stores on and off of Valencia street. Then, go to the Upper Haight and shop in the vintage stores on Haight steet. Then, head downtown and buy any basics. I think your best bet would be to shop in vintage stores as opposed to thrift stores because you haven't developed a strong eye for things yet (or you wouldn't be asking for advice). I lived in SF for years and just moved away last year.
If you go on a weekday during the day, you will probably be one of the only people in the store so you'll have the sales associate to yourself. You can ask them to pick out things for you, and since they work in a vintage store, they are trained to have a strong eye for what is both classic or trendy, and also what would look good on you.

You can take BART instead, but it will take awhile. Get off at 16th st station either way and you'll be in the Mission 1 block from Valencia. And you'll be right in front of the 33 MUNI pickup to go to upper Haight.
Loved it, but the second tech boom that just hit last summer made finding a new place impossible. I couldn't even find a decent studio for the cost of what my 2 bedroom apartment was renting for a few years prior. But I was kinda done with it anyway and left for LA. I grew up in the East Bay though, which is close to SF.

^One of my long sleeve shirts, I wore this with jeans/sneakers and the shirt was not tucked in. Not sure if that is a good look or I need to pair the shirt with black pants/dress shoes? I'm just going for a casual look but a step above t-shirt and jeans.
P.S. The shirt was nice and ironed but after a day of spirited motoring/top down driving it became all crinkled.
Once you have the shirt fitted it will look so much better. Doesn't fit in the shoulders or at the waist. The extra material makes for an unkempt appearance.

^^^ That's better. I think trendy sunglasses help. Though we can't really see the fit from the pics because you're sitting down.

Thanks for the directions, heck I might just drive now but if I do take bart I will do just that.

^I'd want my shirts to fit like this. Crisp and clean, no excess material.
Oh I see, SF is a great place to visit...and live as well I would think. I spent my whole life in the east bay (born in Palo Alto at Stanford Hospital, Fremont resident for 26 years and counting)
Yes sir, nothing beats a fitted shirt. I really should bite the bullet and just do it already.

Yes, when you buy a shirt, you buy a shirt that buttons at your neck with enough space to insert a finger between the collar and your neck. This way you don't feel strangled. The sleeve length should come past the wrist. The tailor will take in all the other dimensions to fit you. Thus the tailor will have material to shorten the sleeves to come to the wrist joint, and have material to work with at the shoulder. The distance from the neck to the shoulder joint will be take in, thus the seam for the arm will be over the shoulder joint. This looks better and will be more comfortable reaching. The sides will be taken in, and the arm pit will be taken in. Not only does this keep the shirt looking neater and not wrinkled you don't have all that excess material bunching up in the armpits making a jacket very uncomfortable.
Once you have one fitted you will understand how much more comfortable it is, then why some people can seem to wear a shirt and tie all day.

ArmySGT - I look forward to experiencing a fitted shirt. I would be up for wearing a shirt/tie all day if its comfortable...it would be like a uniform to me that never gets old.
Sophia_Starina, Ill post up some photos soon and you can judge.

I think you should go to macy's and get a personal shopper to put together several outfits for you. I think you are still confusing some current trends with things that women actually like and people in general tend to respond well to.

Thanks for the tip charlotte, Ill try the boutiques in SF first though.
I buzzed my head, I felt it gave me a better look...the old hairstyle was getting to be a hassle with the heat/styling.

I actually really admire your simple/classic style (granted, I haven't seen the "swag" picture you posted... so I may be off base) and I think when you're going simple and chic you should consider shopping around for simple and stylish items that project quality.
You are at IKEA level... try to go towards the CB2 end of the spectrum. http://www.cb2.com/Catalog/View-Online.aspx?catalog_name=83879_2441d7c1_ebc4172a&display_name=now%20and%20new
I think I want to have this model-guy's babies:

Your friends may feel that you do not stand out enough... I think a guy that dresses without pretense is akin to a breath of fresh air.
Key points:
-Well tailored clothing.
-Slim silhouettes.
-Slim silhouettes.
-Slim silhouettes.
-Darker jeans.
-Button down shirts.
-Color, perhaps you can consider starting slow and incorporate more color in your shoes, socks, undershirts, or a belt with a contrasting seam.
-Soft, sleek sweaters for chilly evenings and cold seasons (girls love to cuddle when you're wearing cashmere or something even softer, yum!).
Look into Michael Kors, Kenneth Cole, Charles Tyrwhitt (especially their extra slim fit shirts), Ralph Lauren, Lacoste, H&M, Uniqlo, and check out your local Bloomingdales, they may have a strong denim selection... for now, here is an online fit guide: http://www.bloomingdales.com/customerservice/mens_denimfitguide.jsp?cm_re=FLASHPAGE-_-MensDenimFitGuide-_-MensDenimFitGuide
Well-crafted shoes, jackets, coats, and accessories. You needn't spend a ton of cash to procure quality clothing... hit up seasonal sales and find classic pieces that will stand the test of time... go to the outlets... check out overstock, gilt, and other discount sites to save money.

All signs point to the fact that fitted clothing is the current trend.
I don't mean skin tight like this: http://i01.i.aliimg.com/photo/v0/318081353/Men_s_tight_fit_bamboo_charcoal_t.jpg

Don't kill me, but I feel like your hair was nice before. Buzz cuts just seem like of... juvenile and also outdated. Like something 10 year old boys standardly had in the late 1990s. It just seems really generic, young (pre-teen young), and outdated, like the thought of a big loose t-shirt on men.
Part of fashion is effort. Actually, that's a huge part of it. A buzz cut looks like you just don't want to put any effort into your look, and would look weird with any outfit you actually did put effort into because your look/style would no longer look uniform A buzz cut looks really odd with a suit or any sort of fitted dress shirt.
Hair plays a huuuuuuuge part everyone style/look. I feel like the only people nowadays who have buzz cuts are solely men who can't grow their hair out without it deemed being inappropriate for the work place (i.e. black men growing afros or anyone with kinky or tightly curled hair).
I agree with all the links Sophia posted here:

Sophia - That was a tremendous help right with the links and all the visuals I can see now, everyone has been helpful and I appreciate it. I do prefer the fitted clothes as well...but there is a huge difference between fitted and tight. I know you know this...that one example of a muscle tee that some dudes would probably wear out in public/the clubs is way to tight for me...it actually looks gay (nothing against that). I dont go for loose/baggy, but slim is good...as long as there is still a tiny bit of wiggle room ie the dress shirt comparison is perfect.
simone87 - I know exactly where your coming from and I dont think your alone, you could be one in a crowd of many who would agree that tight shirts on men can look busty. Sophia is on the money with the fitted clothes and I think thats what you like as well? As long as its not skin tight...key words skin tight its good to go.
glamour - I can see where your coming from with the buzz cut feedback. It really is a low maintenance hair style and thus one might think the guy who sports it is not giving to much thought into his appearance. I just find it to be masculine and clean...heres where I visualize it looking good:

http://s3.hubimg.com/u/659998_f260.jpg
Just a few examples. I think a buzz can look real sharp with a suit and or casual wear...if anything its a complement to the clothes since its subtle and simple and clean. I will tell you now I am regretting cutting my hair lol....oh well it grow back thankfully. I would consider keeping it always short if I had more of a chiseled face/jawline but I think I do look better with more hair as you previously stated. I agree.
