I know lighting is important, I've been camming a zillion years. BUT what are the lights you are using? It seems no matter how I arrange my lamps I am always YELLOW! I have a mac, there is no settings I can adjust for my cam. I think it may be the colors in my bedroom or something, but wanted to know what you ladies use! Or what is your set-up like?

It should depend on your space. If you have a large area you may what to go with umbrella lights because they give off more light. Soft-boxes take up less room however they don't give off as much light as umbrella's. I have like 4 fluorescent umbrella lights and 2 fluorescent softboxes, I mostly use the umbrella's though. I think I'm going to pick up a ring light soon and rig it to my camera because I hate how much space is taken up when I have to put the other lights behind the camera.

I have a soft box and never use it. It is just too much light.
I never use any lighting, am I the only one? My bed room is in a high rise and has big windows. I use kind of a transparent curtain and 99% of the time cam during the day. Day light is the best light!
The moments when I cam in the evening I just turn on my regular bedroom lights and tweak the settings of my cam and the guys don't really seem to care.
I would love to try out a ring light for my cam tho.

I had to put smaller bulbs in mine because the big ones that come with the soft boxes just put off too much light. Regular bulbs are perfect imo.

That might work. The bulb that is in there right now is about as big as my forearm, lol.
And the light is very cold. These things never seem to have normal, warm, light. Could also be because it is a Chinese crap thing that cost me 50$

Hey guys I was just wondering if you had any tips on the best lighting to use for camming and creating clips? Icam mostly at night time and I'm using two lamps right now one right behind my laptop and the other one is from my ceiling fan, my room is very small but I realize that this yellow lighting makes my camera feed look grainy and my videos do not look clear even though I am shooting with my Logitech C920 the quality still looks really crappy with the lighting that I have now. I was wondering if you had any recommendations for good lighting on a very tight budget of around $40 and also where should I be aiming the light at because when I aim it at my face my vision gets too blurry to be able to cam any tips? I'm a mess with lighting. Thanks

You should purchase the cfl daylight light bulbs. Those are the best ones to have. Yellow bulbs are horrendous imo. Even worse if your walls are off white/tan and you use yellow bulbs. It makes everything look dingy.

If you go with CFL bulbs you should go for 800 lumens in a bright white tone. Pretty much the same for Led 800-1100 lumens. I believe thats a 60 watt equivalent when you're using incandescent light bulbs? But Incandescent are the ones you want to stay away from. Led or cfl can be more expensive but worth it. Walmart has some options around $10 for 4 I think?
Its all about the Kelvin scale now and days. Here's an article that gives some information

Hi all,
I'm thinking about getting a ring light, but I don't know what I should be looking at buying! As in, what size, wattage, brand, etc. I sit fairly close to my cam, but would like the light to be versatile enough to move for making clips.
What are your recommendations please? Thanks!

Hello. I have so many lights but I have two directly in front of me.

Then a massive vanity light on in the corner on my makeup desk to brighten my room lighting and I use it to put on my stage makeup:
https://www.etsy.com/listing/544979946/xxl-dimmable-hollywod-forever-lighted?ref=shop_home_active_6&pro=1
All are dimmable. The two ring lights have variations of cold and warm tones/percentages also! Highly recommend all.

I went the DIY route with mine:
It was cheap and worked pretty well! I only used one string of rope light for mine and I think it definitely needed two. Also, I wish I had purchased an extension cord to use with this, so that I'd be able to move it around the room a little bit more.
After I finished making the light and zip-tying it to my tripod, I covered it with a layer or two of white tissue paper. This helped diffuse the light a little bit (kind of like the white umbrellas in the lighting kits), and took me from "lookin' pretty good" to "glowing."

I have a big ring light from neweer on amazon but that is too bright to go in front of me all the time so i mostly use it for videos.
I also have a few of those cheap little usb clip on selfie lights for mobiles.
I mainly use the little ring light on my Razer Kiyo webcam, its absolutely perfect!

I'll probably get a second one if I like the first. I'll wait until Amazon gets it and then put it on a wishlist. I think it really just depends on your personal preference and how you want your stream to look. In that video just having one seems to provide a great deal of light.

I found a new product for ambient lighting that's inexpensive and effective. The Ustellar RGB LED floodlights. I got a 15watt set for $29 on Amazon. However I am considering switching them for the 30watt version. You can see what they look like at the end of this article Cammodel Lighting (https://admin.boleynmodels.com/ref?page=blog/new-gadgets-for-cammodel-lighting/&campaign=12&affToken=NTc2).

I finally got myself a ring light and was almost ready to send it back. I had the white filter on it and even turned up only a quarter of the way the glare was killing my eyes, so I switched to the orange one and yuk, made me look horrid. I happened to take the filter off and voila, it looks amazing just bare like that, turned up about half way.
For some reason I didn't realize it could be used with no filter at all, but for my skin tone and cam, that's what works for my setup. (just wanted to drop this in there in case it helps anyone ;)

I ditched the filters for mine too as soon as I got it. I disliked the glare and how they looked. Without the filter makes the ring light flawless!

I don't know who the chick is, just googled "pink lights" and she was one of the image results.
I love love love the pink, angelic look of this soft but flattering light set up. Right now I'm using two gooseneck lamps that can clamp wherever i want them. If you can believe it, it's better lighting than I had before. But i really really want better lightening and that pink tint is just gorgeous to me. But I don't know what to buy.
I wish I had great lighting from every angle versus the over-exposed bs I have now.

She's probably using a softbox with a cool bulb for her direct lighting and the pink tint can be done with something as cheap as pink lampshades and pink tissue paper. But if you want more intensity I would suggest rgb lights. I have these in 15 and 60 watt. 15 is okay but the 60 is like POW! You can have a pink aura, a purple essence, a blue cloud effect...whatever!
Ustellar 60w remote controlled flood light.

Phillips Hue Bulbs are also popular but I think they're too expensive. I got my flood lights for $60 and it comes with a set of two. One Philips bulb can be $45.

Does anyone have any tips for replicating daytime lighting? I've tried various things but never look my best when it's dark and I'm getting a bit frustrated with myself. I think the best I've looked, is pointing two standing lamps at the wall in front of me and using kiyo razer ring light webcam on a low setting.
It's getting darker, earlier now in the UK and I would like to be more confident streaming when it's dark out. I don't want anything crazily bright or studio-looking, just sort of replicating the soft day light look? I do also have limited room which makes this a further challenge. x

You can get daylight bulbs on amazon, but they are usually horribly bright. I have extremely sensitive eyes so I found the best solution (not overly cheap though)
i got the Phillips ambience bulbs and kit where you can pick exactly what tone and brightness on your phone and I use those bulbs in ikea Fido lamps. I find 2 to be the perfect balance x

I use one Elgato Keylight plus a ring light in the front. That's more than enough light for me. But you will need to have some back ground lighting especially if you're using a webcam. The Elgato Keylight doesn't get as bright as a softbox but honestly I prefer that to being blinde.
LoraDoll
09-23-2019, 08:21 PM
yea. my other issue with the softboxes, that they make me blind after a few hours. I have the bright look in my room now ,but personally, I would rather try some "half light " , a bit more shady style.

Something like this. Similar to the pink room. I really want to put neon decorations on the wall. They look cool.
So it can be done with those lights, and background lights... hm. A new way to spend some $$.

This guy has some of the best videos on how to stream effectively. His tips are very easy to follow. Watch this video on diy lighting and how to change ambient lighting. He blew my mind around the 8:45 mark. He suggest changing the glow on your face by just bringing up a random wallpaper from Google images. For example a hot pink wallpaper (https://www.google.com/search?q=hot+pink+wallpaper&tbm=isch&ved=2ahUKEwj__NDwkOnkAhUHHFMKHfKSCbsQ2-cCegQIABAC&oq=hot+pink+wallpaper&gs_l=mobile-gws-wiz-img.3..0l5.10968.12079..13074...0.0..2.268.1475.0j 3j4......0....1.........0i13.bo1dH_Fqpsg&ei=_d-JXb-KKIe4zALypabYCw&client=ms-android-mpcs-us-revc&prmd=isbvn) can cast a pink glow directly on your face from a monitor.
