"teaching what you love" ?

This reminds me of a biology teacher I had. He had both degrees, Master/Master. Fresh out of college and was hired on at the high school I attended. We had some freedom in picking our classes, physics/bio/geology/etc for your science requirements. The guy made such an impression on his students that people were not only signing up for Bio, they were also requesting him. I know a few that who were assigned the other bio teach and dropped the class for something else. I had the pleasure of getting into a full year of his classes and it was one of the most enjoyable classes I have had in all of my schooling. After his three year contract was up it got out the school was letting him go. Many people wondered why the highest student rated teacher at the place was being let go. The rumor was the tenured science teachers did not like him and there was a push to get him fired after his second year, but they had no good reason too. Once the word got out the students filed a petition with the school board urging them to reconsider. I believe around half the total students and everyone who had him as a teacher sign it. They ultimately said he was not being renewed for administrative reasons. The student response was instead of going to science class for three days you left the building to protest. Ultimately we all got a generic discipline note added to our record, they let the guy go, and he was immediately hired by a science academy type school. I'm glad for the experience, but it was a damn shame for the other students at that place and the ones to come.

Stories like that are all too common in this country. It's the main reason the teacher's unions have conniptions over merit pay. Let's think about this as apolitically as possible : In what other job is there no reward for knowing more ; working harder and getting better results ?

Your bio teacher terrified his fellow teachers. He actually knew his subject matter ; his students were interested and engaged. Horrors ! We can't have that! What if the parents get wind of it ?

It's no surprise he was snapped up by a PRIVATE school.

Some incredible stuff being posted here. The ghosts are made out of electrons and/or other particles is a new one for me.

I think there is a difference between being simplistic and teaching things that are just not so. The former is a function of trying to be age appropriate ( which I hated ) and aiming for the lowest common denominator which I didn't like either. While trying to avoid being political , the issue arises whether most public schools are shortchanging both the slower children ( who mostly drop out , get left back etc. ) and the intellectually gifted children . One of my biggest problems in public school was BOREDOM ! In first grade I already knew how to read but had to sit through : " See Dick. See Dick run. See Jane. See Jane run away from Dick. " In 3rd grade our Social Studies textbook was published in the 1930's and was obviously ridiculously out of date. By high school I had read more history than most of my teachers. I was able to get out of High School in three years and couldn't wait to go to college.

I completely agree and was in the same situation. I knew how to read before kindergarten due to a mother who believed in reading while in school we were being taught letters, numbers and colors. I would get bored and the teacher would get mad at me. I don't know how it is now but back then our school had no gifted classes so those who were more gifted would get bored. On top of it the school had what they called "grade reading" meaning when we went to the school library we could only get the books in our grade level. When I was in first grade I was reading at a much higher level (I think it was close to 3rd or 4th grade)but they wouldn't let me read books that high. Luckily the local library didn't care so I got books there.

Lol. Talk about reopening old wounds. Yep, the library in my grade school was a joke. Thank God for the public library !

I've always loved history. It wasn't until years after I graduated high school that I found out how and why I knew more history than most of my high school history teachers : A. They didn't have to know that much history ( no Master's in history required ) and B. there was no requirement that they stay current in their field.

That's my problem with the educational system, especially grade school. I am bouncing around the idea of going back to school to become a teacher and was horrified to learn that to be a teacher in most subjects you only need a degree in education. I would rather see a teacher with a degree in history teach history versus a teacher with an education degree. The religious schools are a bit different where they want you to have the actual degree in the subject and the teacher certification and the certificate through the diocese. I am getting the diocese certificate now (and they are paying for it)but knowing this I would rather teach in a religious school because the standards are much higher.

I am not exaggerating when I say I learned more on my own than from school, including college (which I consider really a joke).

"George Washington was the first president of the U.S." WRONG. It was John Hanson.

"Christopher Columbus discovered America." WRONG. The natives were already here. Also, Leif Erikson discovered America long before Columbus.

"The Quakers had a big ol' fancy dinner with the natives, and so we came up with Thanksgiving." WRONG. The Europeans invaded America, took over the land, murdered the natives, enslaved surviving natives, and completely stole their culture and forced Christianity onto them against their will. The USA was founded on murder and slavery.

I could go on, but I better stop because thinking about American history lies is pissing me off, lol

One of my teachers told me: "You will never make money off just talking and seducing guys for a living." I was know in school for talking to guys and getting money off of that. My 11th grade English teacher was warning me of the dangers of not being a proper woman. Yet all of the other girls in my class was on their 5th child :) You got to love ghetto schools. Gang members can play craps behind the school yet I am the bad guy for have a few jocks secretly pay my way as a teenager.

^^^ trying to avoid a political side trip, I would argue that the scientists I mentioned and the potential applications / inventions they have come up not being taught to mainstream HS students, college students, the general public etc. is NOT just a matter of simplification.

Instead, it is arguable that the 'powers that be' have deemed the discoveries of these scientists, and the applications / inventions stemming from those discoveries, as being too 'disruptive', too 'dangerous', etc. for anyone outside the 'powers that be' themselves to be made aware of ... let alone be able to USE !!! As such, outside of an 'elite' circle, these discoveries will not be taught, and the resulting applications / inventions will be classified as 'fraudulent', 'science fiction', 'conspiracy theory' etc.

Of course, some would point out that the world has a few thousand years worth of history illustrating that this is precisely what has traditionally happened since the days of Solomon.

Wow, Melonie, you've really impressed me with this one. The Elite have been controlling information for AGES. I'm so glad that someone else is aware of this! I've read tons of conspiracy research over the years, and I've learned to filter out the bullshit. But what you are saying is incredible and so true.

May the knowledge be with you all! :) And may I say, FUCK THE ELITE!!!

our history books were still like in the old days where communism prevailed... the saddest part was that i was forced to learn that stuff because it was a mandatory SAT subject.

oh and i cannot stand the fact that Religion is actually a mandatory class throughout school and highschool... that's 12 YEARS of mandatory orthodox bullshit.

That's what I'm wondering. It makes sense a religious school would teach religion. The public schools tend to go the other way and the school near me will not even allow kids to read the bible.

that's the problem, i went through public school & highschool, and religion is a mandatory class... i turned 18 right before 12th grade started, and boy you should've seen the look on everyone's faces when they saw me sign a release form, declaring i will no longer attend religion class.

Biggest lie I was ever taught in school was that simply being smart gets you places. I went to a school from k-12 and all of the teachers knew me as an exceptionally smart but exceptionally lazy student. I wouldn't do homework, but I'd constantly participate in class and I'd always ace the tests. I was passed through every class with no work because the teachers knew I fully grasped the concepts. However, it destroyed me in college, I still never studied and didn't do any work but talked with the professors and aced the tests...and I kept getting really shoddy grades. I just wish I was forced to do actual work for the first 18 years of my life, because apparently just being the smartest person in the room "in the real world" just makes you a pretentious lazy bitch, lolol.

Ok that makes sense. In the US it's just the opposite where religion is actively discouraged in school. Often kids aren't allowed to even pray in school or read the bible. The US public schools are very secular, which is good in a way because it doesn't push a religion but bad because it caters to non religious. I'd like a more balance where religion was allowed (though not in a group way)along with other viewpoints.

"Christopher Columbus discovered America." WRONG. The natives were already here. Also, Leif Erikson discovered America long before Columbus.

so true, i was just talking about this with somebody today! why are people SO set on columbus being the first one? they discovered roman coins off the coast of venezuela, so its possible that it was "discovered" long before even Lief Erikson!

Columbus was also a dick. He took the cash prize for being the first person to see new land, yet when lookout Rodrigo de Triana spotted land at 2AM, Columbus was most likely asleep. Then when Columbus set up colonies, he ran the natives into the ground forcing them into work camps to support the new colony killing millions of servants over the years (yes millions, he was the meso-american Hilter). There's horrible accounts of men being seperated from women to work, over-harvesting crops, lack of food, and mother's drowning thier babies because they have no milk to feed them.

De las Casas records that when he first came to Hispaniola in 1508, "there were 60,000 people living on this island, including the Indians; so that from 1494 to 1508, over three million people had perished from war, slavery, and the mines. Who in future generations will believe this? I myself writing it as a knowledgeable eyewitness can hardly believe it...."

Columbus can go to Hell.
