^Belgium here, I get 35% too :)
I *think* Eastern European countries get 30%
But EE girls have to work with a studio, The most popular sites wont except the girls solo
(idk about indie sites, most likely the most they get is 30% because of the studio cost.
Japan also gets 35%

^I am from The Netherlands and getting 35% aswell
Thanks for sharing the documentary! Sm seems to be pretty hardcore while watching the doc- or I am, since I felt like I am really busting my ass off watching the documentarygirls just curling their hair around their finger, blowing kisses and a bit of dancing. If I woudnt be working as a camgirl I would think "damn thats easy maing money, dont have to do shit".
And yeah, I know I could be offering different kind of shows without to much hardcore stuff, but I dont think I will be getting away with my pvt price at 7.99 a min.
Sadly enough for me my clients are into different things than dancing/stripping only. I do have some exceptions on a day..
Is adultwork that different than sm, or do they only portrait one side of the girls their work in de doc, not wanting to be to explicit?.. (or am I nuts, or my clients demanding? ;) hahaha)
BTW only have seen the first half of the doc, didnt had the time yet to watch it all
No trust me your not going to get far on adultwork if thats all you do, the documentary was more aimed at the girls, thankfully not showing the huge mix bag of ladies that cam.
AW is big on fetish a lot of no holds bar taboo girls do well on there, Thats not to say all sorts of girls do well on there but the traffic is no where near as good as some other sites.
The documentary showing 3 pretty girls two of then that had done porn and escorting and one saying if she ended up showing her pussy she would do porn is not how a lot of webcam girls think or would consider.
I didn't like the documentary it didn't show the big mix bag of girls the good and the bad of webcamming.
To be honest thats a good thing as aw has not really got the traffic to support the huge influx of girls that will join the bandwagon thinking its easy money and you don't have to do much to get top dollar.

I wish for once they would make a more realistic documentary on camming. We all have great days but we have a lot if sucky ones for sure. I believe that this documentary had an angle and it was not the most positive one. Just one girl was actually happy with the job. I'm patiently wainting on a documentary that shows freeloaders, 2dollar days, and weirdos lol

So I just finished this and I'm just really confused.
If you don't like the industry why stay in it?
She did porn and she didn't seem very happy she made that choice.
Why choose camming?
Did she change her cam name to her real name?
Or did I get that mixed up?
This was a really...Strange documentary.
I don't think they picked the best chicks to represent cam girls.

I got the sense from that doc that they didn't wanna show much actual show content.. I don't doubt that those girls do masturbate on cam (with of course exception to the one who said she wouldn't do that), but they just.. didn't show it. :/
It's strange, really, when you think about it.. The more they'd show about that side of camming, the more viewers they'd get, the more men there would be joining camsites. They tended to focus more on crazy-high earnings than sex appeal to draw more viewers in..
Lol, now I've got started thinking maybe it's a deliberate thing to encourage UK girls to cam to help generate more money in our economy. :P

Hypothetically, if some "normal" girls here were willing to do it, it wouldn't be too hard to compile a more realistic documentary, even if it were just for release on Youtube (although Netflix streaming seems to contain quite a few home-movie style films, so who knows what they would accept). After all, pretty much all of us have the basic equipment and software.
I'm not saying I'm interested in doing something like that, but just pointing out that it could be done. Even though we know the ups and downs of the job, it would probably still be hard to give a balanced viewpoint. Which girls would volunteer (if any), and how do you decide which ones to show? Wouldn't the most successful ladies be more willing to reveal the details of their rates and earnings? Do you show the extreme cases (the really big days and the really slow days), or do you focus on the average days? How do you make sure that you reflect the right proportion of shitty custies vs great custies vs average joe custies? Do you actually show what happens in a real hardcore toy show, because if not, it would still look like all we do is prance around looking pretty in our underwear.
Furthermore, how would such a documentary be received? A lot of us worry that these nice-nice documentaries are driving unwitting girls into the industry with a skewed viewpoint. But a lot of us love what we do, and a lot of us make good $$ doing it. Wouldn't an accurate documentary drive more girls into the industry, too? It actually IS kind of a great job, after all.
Sorry for the ramblings. This sort of thing just makes me wonder...

I am independent model in EE & get 30% from day one on SM. I signed up directly on site so no studio involved. Tho on other sites like flirt4free i was automatically assigned to a studio in middle europe and the percentage i was offered was 25% my cut. WTF that was soo low, i tested site for 2 hrs once & i hated it, never signed in again. I tell u very honest, it feels pretty bad to be offered always lower % pay & different work conditions on cam sites. Oh well, at least i was not born in a very very poor country with no water, electricity & what not but still....

But it wasn't about camming...it was about 3 girls who do camming.

^ I don't know if this is in response to me, or just a general statement. I was using your quote, Katy, because you are absolutely right. ANY documentary about cam girls or camming is going to have some "casting" issues, because most of us are very private people and we like to keep quiet about the details of our businesses and our personal lives. So it doesn't matter if you're the BBC making a film about the truth about 3 girls who cam, or you're someone trying to make a film about the truth about camming. Either way you will have trouble finding a bunch of "typical" cam girls to be in your project.

I came across that article last week. He mainly interviewed MFC girls or girls who were foreign and working for pimps or studios. I would want to do it from an actual camgirl's perspective and not someone curious about it. I would want video footage with the option of some girls remaining annon. I'm thinking more on the level of the American Courtesans but more amateur.

The first girl they showed seems to be working from a super small netbook with a built-in webcam. Really? Do you think they were just staging the shoots with it or she actually works from that?

I hadn't heard of the American Courtesans, but I just watched the preview for it. Looks very interesting, and I love reading/watching things related to courtesan-ship.
I have to say, though, I would LOVE to see something about sex work that DOESN'T tie it so strongly to a history of sexual abuse and/or shady childhood. Yes, a large percentage of sex workers have been sexually abused, assaulted, or harassed. But that's partly because an unacceptably large portion of ALL women have those experiences. Somehow they never talk about the connection between sexual abuse and becoming a dental hygienist, though.
Actually, that was a refreshing element of the BBC documentary - they really didn't try to blame the girls' professional choices on having been fucked up by childhood trauma (aside from the third girl, whose mom pushed her into child modeling, but that's not quite the same thing).
