I just started reading "Essentialism: The Disciplined Pursuit of Less" by Greg McKeown. (http://www.amazon.com/Essentialism-The-Disciplined-Pursuit-Less/dp/0804137382)

I know it sounds like something totally counter culture to what being a stripper is all about, but it is about having a mindset that allows you to actively decide what is the most important thing to you and to single mindedly go after that thing. In today's world, focusing in on goals like a laser beam is difficult. This book teaches you how to avoid distraction and live a lifestyle you design for yourself.

I am reading How to make love like a porn star by Jenna Jameson. It's pretty good... I never understood why people love reading biographies so much but now I think I'll start reading more... :)

Stephen King's Dr Sleep

Don't remember the author, but The Strain. Wasn't esp 'grabbed' by the promos that I saw for the series b4 I shipped out but the book was Damn Good.

Working my way, slowly but surely, thru Bad Monkey by Carl Hiaasen. I love his books, esp being in S FL myself.

Oh yes, I love Good Omens, it's so funny. I think you'll love it. Read the first 3 or 4 chapters and let me know what you think.

Really enjoying it so far. Definitely has that "Hitchhiker's" influence, but it's a bit more subtle. Less than 100 pages in and it's already quoting "Bohemian Rhapsody" and namedropping old-school Transformers, which is a plus. :)

How is it? I read "The Shining" recently and was wondering if I should pick this up.

I glad you like Good Omens. It's another on my list of re-reads. (re-reads? Is that a word? Anywhoo.) It's been a about a year since I read it. I missed the old Transformers reference. Which one did they mention?

Ann Rule, I like her writing. I read Green River, Running Red: The Real Story of the Green River Killer by Ann Rule. I could not put it down. It was so morbidly interesting. It happened around the Seattle area. Gary Ridgeway would pickup street prostitutes and kill them. He got some kind of sick sexual satisfaction by strangling them.

Amazingly, I flipped the book open to the exact page:

"When Warlock was ten, he liked baseball; he liked plastic toys that transformed into other plastic toys indistinguishable from the first set of plastic toys except to the trained eye..."

A few pages later, at Warlock's eleventh birthday party, a little girl says "I gotter [sic] Transfomer anna mylittlepoyer [sic] anna decepticon attacker anna Thundertank..."

So that's a Thundercats reference, as well. :)

Oh, now I remember. (face palm) That's the party where Adam (is that his name?) gets the hell hound and he names it and it turns into a cute little dog or something like that.

Rather heartbroken to read on the Wikipedia page for "Good Omens" that both a sequel and a film adaptation were in the works but now appear extremely unlikely. Johnny Depp as Crowley and Robin Williams as Aziraphale? I'd say Tom Hiddleston for Crowley, but that may be a bit too similar to Loki. So... Timothy Olyphant? And Bryan Cranston for Aziraphale, of course.

Just read "Alice in Wonderland" and am now looking up all the symbolism, subtext, and mathematical references hidden in the book. Some pretty complex stuff in a "children's" book.

Alice's attempts at multiplication (chapter two of Adventures in Wonderland) work if one uses base 18 to write the first answer, and increases the base by threes to 21, 24, etc. (the answers working up to 4 × 12 = "19" in base 39), but "breaks" precisely when one reaches base 42, leading Alice to declare "oh dear! I shall never get to twenty at that rate!"

I think I brought up the "42" thing in another thread. Anyway, I'm currently reading Stephen King's "Rita Hayworth and Shawshank Redemption," the novella on which the movie was based.

It is impossible not to hear Morgan Freeman.

How to make love like a porn star, Jenna Jameson! A fun read!

That was actually ghostwritten by a guy names Neil Strauss, who also wrote a book called "The Game." The Game is one of those pick-up artist books. I dunno how true "love like a pornstar" is.

Anne Rules book on Ted Bundy is pretty interesting, given that she knew him personally - they worked at a suicide hotline together. Everyone joked about how much he looked like "himself". scary.

I spend most of my 'work' day in a bookstore, if anyone is looking for good, popular or obscure books or recommendations. I tend to read Polisci/science/weird fiction and some biography.

"Stranger beside me", that is a CRAZY book! As far as true crime books go, i have to second this. Especially because it's not written by the asshole that did all that stuff, but bu someone he knew that was floored when it turned out he was a serial killer!

You read these true crime Mafia books written by guys in witness protection and they're all Godfather-Robin Hoods. Yeah, sure.

Please feel free to post any recommendations for books you've read in the past as well as books you're currently reading. I have an ever growing list of books on my read list.

I just started reading Jon Krakauers new book "Missoula" on rape and the college justice system, I am only a few chapters in but I am 'loving it'-bad term. but yeah.

Mystery wise I just read The Never List - Koethi Zan. Not amazing writing or literature, but good. IF you like beautiful writing and a mystery check out The Secret History by Donna Tartt. Old book but so so so goood.

Also on my current "to read" pile is Gang Leader for a Day - Sudhir Vnkatesh, The Underground Girls of Kabul - Jenny Nordberg and a few others I can't remember at the moment because I'm dead exhausted.

If you just like a beautiful story, I recently read "The Storied Life of AJ Fikry" - Gabrielle Zevin and thought it was just.. beautiful. First time I've ever cried at a book.

That "Shawshank escape" story trended on FB shortly after I finished the novella the film is based on. For some reason, I thought the two were radically different, like "The Running Man." Some plot points are changed but the biggest difference is just that Red is a red-headed Irish man in the book. It doesn't effect the actual story in any way, but it's what makes Morgan Freeman's response when asked about his nickname so funny: "Maybe it's because I'm Irish."

I'd have to say the film is better. Unlike most adaptations, it adds a lot since the book is so short. Characters like Brooks and Hadley get more development and I prefer the way Andy's problem with the Sisters is resolved. Andy's engineering of his escape, and the extra payback he gets, make the ending of the film even better. Both versions have the same wonderful dialogue and narration. "Get busy living, or get busy dying."

After reading several Stephen King books lately, this is definitely the most un-Stephen King like of all of them. The style is so different it's hard to believe it's the same author.

On a whim I got Lords of the Sith: Star Wars from audible.

Here's the teaser - A long time ago in a galaxy far, far away.... When the Emperor and his notorious apprentice Darth Vader find themselves stranded in the middle of insurgent action on an inhospitable planet, they must rely on each other, the Force, and their own ruthlessness to prevail.

Sounds interesting.

It does! I'm imagining a scene with Vader and the Emperor forced to make awkward small talk during a lull in the action. :)

I just finished "The Old Man and the Sea." The minimalist style (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Iceberg_Theory) was interesting, and after reading Hemingway's thoughts on his work, specifically how omission strengthens the story, I think Santiago [SPOILER]dies at the end[/SPOILIER]. Briefly skimming Hemingway's bio makes me want to read more of his books and learn more about him.

I think I'll read "The Great Gatsby" next.

Meanwhile, I'm listening to "Heir to the Empire" during my exercise. Love the effort the narrator puts into the character's voices. A scene with Capt. Pellaeon talking to Talon Karrde sounds like a conversation between Megatron and Antonio Banderas. :)

Lords of the Sith: Star Wars is really good and their communications are almost like small talk. I love that visual.

"The Old Man and the Sea", great book, another one of my favorites.

I've never read the "The Great Gatsby", not even for school.

The Thrawn Trilogy, the narrator is good. I recognize Antonio Banderas and Jack Nicholson and I think a few more which don't came to mind at the moment.

Finished "The Great Gatsby." Took a while for me to get into it, but I enjoyed it. Love the last line: "So we beat on, boats against the current, borne back ceaselessly into the past." Has anyone seen the recent film version? I imagine DiCaprio would be great as Gatsby but don't think I could buy Toby Maguire as Nick. Oh, and how weird is this? First, I find this article about Fitzgerald's mansion going on the market (http://www.forbes.com/sites/zillow/2015/05/22/f-scott-fitzgerald-great-gatsby-mansion/), and then NPR's "Fresh Air" re-airs an episode discussing the book (http://www.npr.org/2015/05/22/406748019/how-gatsby-went-from-a-moldering-flop-to-a-great-american-novel). Both of these were released on the same day I finished reading "The Great Gatsby." Coincidences like that freak me out.

I'll stick with the classics for my next read. I was thinking about reading the books mentioned in Billy Joel's "We Didn't Start the Fire."
