Damn, I blew a freaking credit on that book!!! What about all the great reviews? Do like anything by Neal Stephenson?
Cryptonomicon was a good premise ruined by windy, monotonous, writing. The guy takes three paragraphs to describe something that could easily be done in a couple of sentences. Zodiac was ok, but also kind of windy. If someone is a windy writer, they need to have a story that is interesting enough to carry it. Stephenson needs a good editor.
Try Elizabeth Moon's Vatta's War series, starting with Trading in Danger (http://www.amazon.com/Trading-Danger-Vattas-Elizabeth-Moon/dp/0345447611/ref=pd_sim_14_4?ie=UTF8&dpID=51fl7q7VDZL&dpSrc=sims&preST=_AC_UL160_SR97%2C160_&refRID=15AMWKE96B03XF5HMYHH). Moon writes at a very brisk pace.

I downloaded the audiobook novelizations of Alien, Aliens and Alien 3 from Audible. They're good, but other than a few extra details, if you have seen the movies, you've read the books.

The Heavy by Dara-Lynn Weiss. A memoir about the author successfully putting her obese school-aged daughter on a diet. It showed just how hard it is even for a super involved parent to get an obese child from obese to normal weight. They did a profile of her in Vogue that made her look like a monster Upper East Side socialite that was laying the groundwork for a life long eating disorder for her child. But reading the book you see how her daughter didn't regulate her own eating and would have possibly had to deal with binge eating and obesity her whole life instead if her mother didn't step in. It was an easy read, I read it in a day.

Read Elmore Leonard's "Pronto," featuring the Raylan Givens character who would later be portrayed by Timothy Olyphant on "Justified," one of my favorite TV series. I really needed a break from the relentlessly depressing books I'd been reading. Now I'm trying to decide what to read next. I think I want to stick with the classics. I've never read anything by Charles Dickens. Or "Moby Dick" or "War and Peace." That's going to take a while.

Moby Dick is a great read. There are some parts that are a little dry when the narrator is talking about the nature of whale, but for the most part, it's funny, sad and very powerful, such a book.

You should look into getting the digital copy that way you can highlight the word and just have the definition right there. I prefer paper books but in this instance, it's great to have the digital copy as well.

Was in the mood for nonfiction and went for Letter to a Christian Nation and Islam and the Future of Tolerance, both by Sam Harris. Both were good, but the one on Islam was particularly interesting.

I love this on Kindle. It also keeps track of the words you look up, as well as any notable passages you highlight.
Occasionally, I'll be reading a paperback and have the impulse to press a word on the page. :)

Did anyone mention How To Be a Bad Bitch by Amber Rose? I read the whole thing last night and LOVED it! She is really cool and down to earth and gives great advice on everything. It is very easy to read and she is very personable. It was a fun book, would totally recommend.

I've been re-reading parts of Gavin De Becker's "The Gift Of Fear" because after reading tons of user generated info on reddit (partially from ex cons & ex gang members) I see that the book still is a valid resource for anyone working in high risk work environments (like bars or adult oriented businesses.)
I might have already mentioned this book on this thread, forgive the repeated info if so...

The Male Factor. (http://www.amazon.com/The-Male-Factor-Unwritten-Misperceptions/dp/0385528116)
Meh. It's about how to work with men in corporate America. I pretty much learned everything that was in that book by being a stripper. I checked it out of the library, and am glad I didn't actually buy the book.
The thing that annoyed me the most is that it insists that us women have to conform to the male mindset when it comes to business to get ahead. That kind of rubbed me the wrong way, instead of working to teach men how women do business and how to work in a female-centric workplace.
I get it, though. Women have been becoming more manly in the workplace since the 70's in order to be taken more seriously. Now that I'm a Realtor, I can see how men are taking a more feminine approach to real estate sales. The ladies are kicking ass in this (potentially) high paying career. Residential real estate customers don't appreciate the hard sell, they want a softer approach and women are just better at client care.

If people have to write a book about that, its kind of stupid anyway.
Starting on Stephen King's "The Dark Tower." I read the Gunslinger when i was a kid (I was young enough, maybe i understood every second word, who knows), what i remember was a really good pulpy almost-but-not-quite Western. I mean there's MAGIC in it from what i remember. Mutants and stuff. Stephen King at his wacky. Imma try the whole series now.
The Man in Black fled across the desert, and the Gunslinger followed." That is an opener worthy of "Call me Ishmael."

Just finished "The Fear Saga". All three are good stories. Very fast paced. The science is good. Looking for another good series. I considered "The Dark Tower" series, but I don't really like Stephen King's writing style. Too long, drawn out, too much dialogue and not enough action. I've read "Salem's Lot" and that was good, but I read "Dreamcatcher", but I found it too slow paced. Anywhoo, I'm open to suggestions.

I will say this. Have you ever heard the nursery rhyme about the little girl with the little curl right in the middle of her forehead, when she was good she was very, very good. But when she was bad she was horrid.
That's how i feel about Stephen king. Dude can get friggin' weird. That said, The Gunslinger's, so far, a pretty good book.

I just finished "Treasure Island," needing something quick and breezy after "Moby Dick." Plus I started watching "Black Sails" and thought it would be interesting, as the TV series is a prequel to the book, only much more R-rated.
What to read next... I want to stick with the classics for a while. I'm thinking maybe "Frankenstein" or something by Dickens.
P.S. Has anyone ever considered that Ishmael and Ahab may be the same person?

I dunno if this is the right thread for it, but Idris Elba was just cast as Roland in "The Gunslinger," for those of you who are Dark Tower fans. Matthew McConaughey was cast as the Man in Black. Filming starts in six weeks, for a January 2017 release. PERFECT CASTING!

My Pharamacology textbook! Medicine is super interesting! Having studied holistic medicine and herbology years ago, it's interesting to see things from the other side even if I don't necessarily go out of my way to take pharmaceuticals.
I also just checked out a bunch of books on clothing reconstruction and design from the library. Excited for all my little side hobbies!

I'll have to see the movie sometime. And then "Young Frankenstein" again. :)

My favorite books for personal and spiritual growth are by the author Don Miguel Ruiz.
I read All of these books by this author.
Here are the names of the books:
The Four Agreements
The Mastery of Love
The Voice of Knowledge
The Fifth Agreement.
They are the only books I have ever read that really changed my way of thinking. Good content, shorter books and thought provoking.

Strange Angel: The Otherworldly Life of Rocket Scientist John Whiteside Parsons. A book about one of the founding fathers of NASA becoming obsessed with quantum physics (think The Secret or Law Of Attraction) and being written out of the history of NASA
Going to take some of these suggestions. It's spring break for me and I've already read too much trashy Dailymail, watched too many YouTube gurus, and listened to too much scifi while on the elliptical lol.
