Hey, I don't remember who, but someone mentioned Valerian to calm anxiety in cats. If whoever did sees this , can you please post the details of how much and how often?

ahhh I'm so crazy for our small zoo - current residents 2 rescue dogs ( one staffie and one cross breed ) 5 rescue cats (1 foster ) 1 very old Hamster , 1 rabbit , 2 rats , and currently caring for an orphan puma cub during the summer holidays (not in my house, tempting though it is ! ) I use camming to pay my way through med school, and I'm about to start 3rd year of my veterinary doctorate :)
^ Valerian has the opposite affect on cats as it does on humans , and works as a stimulant rather than a sedative .....if you want to treat your cat to the experience, try a valerian sprayed toy, I can link you if you're in the UK or failing that a quick search through petshops online in your country should find you some . (don't spray the cat and don't use neat valerian oils ) You could also try a pheromone spray if you haven't before. We have customers who swear by them, but personally I've never seen the cats in the clinic so much as react to them - though to be fair by the time they reach the vets most kittys are past being calmed down by a squirt of Feliway :D Kisses to your anxious cat from me :-*
Edit* Any other camgirls at vet school I would love to hear from you , PM me :)

I'm so stoked to move into my new house next Friday. My pets are eternally trying to cuddle up while I'm on cam and then I get way too many 'look, another pussy in the room!' jokes. I can't lock them up in another room (and feel bad doing it) since I don't really have one and closing my door means that my room gets hot as fuck. My problem is that the air conditioner is in the living room and the bedroom has nothing. So kitties and puppy stay where it's cool and I bake alive. They still paw at my door together to get in.
Also, my face when I realize one of them--usually my orange tabby--has been hiding under the bed for like two hours and she randomly pops out during a show. "And where the fuck did you come from baby?"
My regs are just used to it by now.

Valerian can be both a stimulant AND a relaxant for cats. When I first introduced it to my cat, she went crazy rolling around in it and swatting at imaginary things. However, when I gave it to her again a few days later, it did not have the same effect. Instead, she became relaxed and serene. It's similar to weed in humans in that weed can stimulate you or make you feel anxious at times, but other times it can relax you. I think it depends on the cat's mindset or their tolerance level.
I give my cat about 1/4 or 1/8 of a capsule at a time, and sometimes add a drop of hot water to it to hydrate it. My cat loves it. I give it to her about 3x/week, because daily intake will build up a tolerance. She has twitching and anxiety problems, but on Valerian, her twitching goes away, as does her anxiety. :) Hope this helps!

IDK about cats, but I gave it to my dog with separation anxiety and it worked like a charm. Dog was mellow AF. It was a ~16lbs beagle and I believe the dosage was on like 7-8mg. normally they dose .25-.75mg/lbs for dogs, depending on what you need it for. this is a good article, but I'd google it to be sure. http://www.petplace.com/drug-library/diazepam-valium/page1.aspx

Audri, I love your ferret! I had three between middle school and graduating high school. They loved their bath time and were such wiggly, loving buggers. I just adore them!
As for personal puppy stories, my doggy is currently looking like this poor pug: http://www.digitalspy.com/fun/news/a461149/dog-in-diaper-after-eating-vaseline-picture.html#~oNqwdQfhZRxt1e
Yes, for the same reason. Somebody got out of her kennel last night, pulled down a box, and decided to eat mommy's Vaseline. Her butt is shiny and her poo is literally sliding out of her butt. The night before? She pulled down a box of doggy treats and ate two pounds, so her poop was green and she was whining like a kid who ate too much candy at Halloween. Thankfully, she's fine, but her tummy is very unhappy with her. I'd feel worse for the poor girl, but she really did this one to herself. Also, her poo is green, shiny, and smells...well, this article is accurate: http://thwalker.blogspot.com/2006/10/joys-of-vaseline.html
Ah, the joys of pet ownership. Plus side, she met with the trainer yesterday and we'll be starting obedience school on the 11th.

Oh I feel your pain, my mini schnauzer mix has eaten that much treats. I had to take him to the vet to get his anal glands squeezed. He ate his diaper off by the way...

My dog got my sterilising tablets in the bathroom. She appeared with the cardboard box and I ran up to find a mess of toilet paper and steralising tablet foil strewn around. Straight to the vet after a quick phone call. They didn't want to induce vomiting but I do have drugs to give her three times a day for 5 days and she got a jab too. Poor wee thing. Bathroom's been a mess since moving, need to get some proper storage unit rather than what we have going on just now.38736

Thank you! We only adopt older animals. I love how imperfect they are - they're flawed beings, just as we are! Anyone can turn a perfect kitten into the perfect cat - the playful kittens are always the ones who get adopted. But we love watching their transformations. In the shelters, they seem jaded, scared, raggedy, and lifeless...but give them a few months of loving energy and top-notch food, and their personalities explode! They end up looking like completely different cats. We've never had a negative experience adopting older cats and encourage everyone to give it a shot.
You are lucky your cats are obedient! I adopted an older one a few years ago, and the cat I already had would chew on her and she would just allow it! I had to give her back because he started to get more & more dominant toward her. The girl cat he was around sometimes as a baby, he was totally normal toward, ugh. I can only get kittens so they adapt to the cat I already have 's personality.
We got a ferret!
Awww you're so lucky ferrets are legal in your state! I couldn't get one with my curious and determined cat anyway though lol.
I would LOVE a hedgehog (illegal in my state and bad idea with my cat) and a siberian husky (a bad idea without a yard) also!

Here's my furry little monster! I'm pretty sure her idea of heaven would involve lots and lots of boxes. She can be a handful, but she also senses when I'm not feeling well and will just lay on me and try to purr the pain away. Don't know what I would do without her :)

One of my rabbits died about a week and a half ago. I had to get another one because my remaining rabbit was in mourning and lonely(they were bonded).
I found these two brothers and couldn't decide between them, so I ended up with both. They're the most adorable things I've ever seen and I can't wait until all three are bonded and cuddling together.

REGARDING PICS: Use an external image host such as TinyPic or Photobucket to host and link your photos. SM's photo server only stores photos for a few hours, after which the link shows up as broken and none of us can see anything. :(
----
Back to creatures: The 'puppy' stage needs to end. My dog tears through the house then runs and hides from me like I'm gonna beat her and fear piddles everywhere constantly. I can't trust her out unattended because I either find pee/poop all over the house or something gets torn up (recent examples: remotes, power cords, cat toys, plastic bowls, pillows, chair legs--other things that I can't reasonably 'put up and away'). I have a small room that she'll go lay down in her kennel in, but it has carpet that she is destroying. I've had the dog for 10 weeks. It may be terrible to say, but she's at least 18 months old--possibly older--and needs to get her shit together. She does not do this if I'm in the room, either because she knows she'd be in trouble or because of anxiety/separation. Whatever the case may be, I've never had this much trouble with a dog and while from a training perspective I get it, my last nerve just doesn't and I've begun to seriously regret adopting her. *end rant*

I love this thread!! So many adorable critters! Sadly I have no photos on the new laptop yet, but I have 6 dogs and 2 birds. I haven't had a home phone in like 5 years, got one installed yesterday, and my Irish Wolfhound is terrified of it! When the phone rings he army crawls up to it and then stares at it long after it's stopped ringing lol. He even creeps by it going into the next room.

They are lol. He's a mix, so not quite as massive. He was also malnourished, and underfed when he literally showed up on my doorstep at 5 months old, so according to the vet his growth was stunted. He's about the size of a German Shepherd( his other half), but skinnier and taller.
