As a former career dancer, over ten years up and down the East Coast, I find it surprising that many women choose to dance. For me, dancing was exhausting and emotionally draining. It was constant lying to customers and potential customers, flirting with men I was in no way attracted to in person is a lot harder than flirting from the comfort of my own home where they can't touch me and I can't smell them. The cigarette smoke was awful (I danced before smoking was outlawed indoors in some places).
With camming, I can multitask or at least check out different sites online to keep me amused or informed. Dancing, that's it, its you and the guy. Most of the clubs where I worked had drink minimums, and drinking that much unless you get water or a diet coke (don't even get me started on how insulted guys were for buying a non-alcoholic drink) gives so many calories it negates the exercise, so I was constantly cultivating an eating disorder. Because I drank at work, I depended on taxicab drivers to take me home. Ever noticed how skeevy cab drivers are?
Dancing is also physically tough, you never hear about dancers working 6 shifts a week, whereas with cam I can log into indie sites and be available for shows everyday with no physical toll. If I do wear heels for a show, most of it is sitting or lying down anyway.

About being recorded, more and more clubs are offering live feeds from the stage and sometimes even the dressing room. Speaking of the dressing room, with cam my belongings are not in danger of being stolen, any disagreement I have w a co-worker is virtual, no drugs, razor blades or needles are nearby, no one else's tampons lying around. My POV is that cam wins. God bless the strippers, you all have a tough job and DESERVE to make the $$ you do.

Before I became legal I was considering both stripping and camming. The reason I chose the former was because I actually had a passion for it. A very small part of me finds enjoyment out of talking to, stripping for and performing sexual acts in front of a camera. I feel as though it'd become too much of a job for me. Stripping on the other hand is actually enjoyable. I love pole dancing and having face-to-face conversations as well as giving live lap dances.
Yes there are risks when it comes to dancing and it is physically demanding, but all the risks are outweighed by the fact that I have a love for dancing that I don't have for camming. So for me it comes down to what I'm legitimately happy doing.

^^ You said that beautifully! I just wanted to add, that there wasn't a choice back when I started stripping.
The internet, and even mobile phones hadn't even been invented yet!! Lol!
Given the way the world has changed, and imo is much scarier and crazier, I def. would have chose camming over dancing, in a New York Minute!! No question about that.
I incorporate dancing in my paid chat time anyway. :)

I would like to point out that this was YOUR choice to make. You didn't HAVE to drink on the clock. Did not a single one of the clubs you worked in offer virgin cocktails? Did you bother to ask? One of the questions I make a point to ask when auditioning at a club is if they have virgin cocktails I can order if a customer wants to buy me a drink.

The part I've bolded is just blatantly false. Maybe YOU didn't work six shifts a week dancing, but a lot of "career dancers" do. I certainly never have worked less than four shifts a week unless I was taking a week off, and more frequently worked five, six, or even seven. The vast majority of girls I've worked with did too, unless they were "weekend warriors." As soon as I possibly can, I will be back to that schedule until I'm forced to be a weekend girl by school.
Aside from that, some of the girls I've known liked the physical demand of the job. Getting paid to exercise beats the hell out of paying for a gym membership. Personally, I've had vanilla coworkers accuse me of having ADHD because I'm the type of person who can't sit still when I'm supposed to be working. Dancing is one of the few jobs I could do that satisfies that need.

For the time being, it seems like most dancers don't have to worry about this. If we don't want to work at a club that records, we can just go to one of the majority that does not.

^ as a dancer with invisalign I HATE fake cocktails. They stain my trays. Vodka soda is pretty much the only thing I can order and the waitress almost always fucks it up and brings me a real one.

Are there any Canadian dancers here? Is it true that Canadian clubs allow men to touch and solicit for sex?

I didn't know virgins could stain! I thought it was just dark drinks. Now I kinda feel like a bitch, but at least I have the heads up for when I do my teeth.

^ yeah, pretty much anything with color will stain them, and you have to be careful because you wear them for two weeks at a time! You're not even really supposed to drink anything with too much sugar (sprite, tonic) bevause it gets between the trays and your teeth and speeds up decay.

Which is one of the things I love about camming! No one knows that there's just water in my cup, and frankly, no one cares! So much healthier, less empty calories, no stained aligner.

At the risk of a small thread jack, would it really be an issue to keep them out while working? Couldn't you just wear each set of aligners longer if you chose to wear them for fewer hours? Not arguing that's what you should do, but because I wouldn't want to risk fucking my teeth up after how much I'll be spending on them.

I feel like this is comparing apples and oranges. What kind of person are you? That's the question this ultimately boils down to. What is better for you and what is more fun for you to do?

I love dancing. I love the human interaction, I love the work out, I love the pole, the dancers, the staff. I love that I can get up and walk away from a customer whenever I so please. I love that I can work 7 days a week or none or every other day or doubles or whatever without anyone telling me I'm getting close to overtime and have to give away my shifts (back when I was waitressing/ working retail). I love the energy of the club and how I can turn on my dancer persona when I walk into the building. I love walking into the room and seeing everyone's heads turn to look at me. I love charming men with my energy and seeing the looks on their faces when I smile and wink at them. I love focusing on the person in front of me, seducing all of their money out of them and feeling the satisfaction when they tell me I'm the best girl in the club and they feel so special just because I talked to them. I like teasing men, I like being a fantasy goddess that they will think about when they masturbate to me later. I like the cash. I really, really like the cash.

I've never cammed, so I can't say if I'd like it, but the biggest thing that's held me back is that I'd have to tell my dad and my brother that they might see me fucking myself on some random porn site and I don't want to ruin porn for them because I want some money, lol!

^^ Naida, when you say working 4 hour shifts plus shifts etc hw many hours per shift?

Its unlikely to work in Melbourne under 8hours, its almost guaranteed to be a 10-12 hour shift. I can do max 3 and prefer 2. I get some leeway because I perform well on stage and train new girls etc but I very much feel a long shift.

Each shift I worked was a minimum six hours, usually eight. If I was specifically asked to come in early or happened to already be on that side of town at opening time, I would work ten hours. Sometimes, if things kept going past the official closing time, that could even be extended as far as twelve hours. Of course I'd be so tired after the ten or even twelve hour shifts that I'd barely stay awake long enough to grub down and wipe my makeup off with a wipe, but I wasn't sore or discouraged from doing it all over again the next day.
Of course, I'm still young and have been thoroughly obsessed with the job since starting. Maybe in a few more years, as I get older, I won't be quite so keen on doing so many shifts (particularly anything over eight hours) in the future.

I wish peepshows were still a thing...

I've always wanted to try out peepshows! Unfortunately, it seems like an area of the business that has gone the way of the dodo in most areas of the US since camming became a thing. I'm a little worried that there won't be any (profitable ones, at least) left at all by the time I could afford to travel to a city that might still have them.

I completely agree with "comparing apples to oranges". This topic comes up here a lot, and I never understand it because each is so completely different, I just don't see how they could be compared. Sure, they are both adult industry related... I think it ends there.

Personality and "skill set", I think someone else called it, is definitely going to determine which you prefer, if you are going to compare the two.

As far as earning potential, I think the reason some people assume strippers make more money is because strippers pretty much have to be "traditionally hot" to be allowed to dance. Clubs do not hire anyone and everyone like cam sites do. So the average stripper is making more money than the average cam girl simply because it's easier to make money when you are determined "hot" by most customers. So there are more people camming who make less money, but you have to consider that literally anyone can work on a cam site, and so there are much more of us than there are strippers. Just from what I have seen on here and from friends, I would have to say that camming has more earning potential for the average person, because most of us "average" cam girls couldn't even get hired at a club if we tried. Yet, we can make thousands a week online like it's nothing. Also, there are so many more options to make money with camming, it allows a lot more people to get a piece of the pie.

But then again, it's pretty hard to make GOOD money camming. You have to really know what you're doing in so many different areas to be successful.

I'm not dissing strippers at all, I'm just ignorant to it and now that I'm camming I just am curious why?

I hope no one takes offense to this question!

I think a lot of people missed this part of the OP. She's never danced before and thus was curious about what information she was missing. She wasn't looking for a camming vs. dancing thread - she openly admitted ignorance about the dancing side of the sex industry and was simply looking to be educated on the upsides of stripping. :)

I love this thread because I learned so much! I have always wanted to try dancing but kept chickening out because of the fact that a guy can smell and almost touch me. Thanks for all the amazing input from dancers and camgirls! Love you all.
