Most of it. The processors have jumped ahead a few generations and there's really no excuse to get an i5...go straight for the i7.

We're recommending our models get an Alienware Alpha...everything a cammodel needs right off the shelf in a very small package. You might be able to to just a hair better if you build your own system, but this one
http://www.dell.com/us/p/alienware-alpha/pd?oc=dkcwa08w10&model_id=alienware-alpha does everything you need for under $800.

Hi I have a question I currently have a toshiba i5 2400 8gb it was super cheap but wondering if its the reason why I am lagging, when I use the SM encoder it gets to 60-75 percent cpu. Would getting a higher quality i7 4710q 16gb laptop help this issue? Thx

i thought Dells were crap? Oh noes, now I am confused. I'm running Gateway netbook with a intel Atom, looking to make small upgrade before I start camming in the next month. I need a laptop under $500, just to get started. Any suggestions? And should i go Tigerdirect, or best buy? im not very tech savvy.

Ugh I WISH I was in the US, you guys have things so cheap compared to us :( is this (the i7 version) the same machine you mention http://m.dell.com/mt/www.dell.com/uk/p/alienware-alpha/pd?un_jtt_v_MPLP=yes&fl=m&un_jtt_redirect?

Looks like the same thing, but you have to fiddle with the page to find the i7 version.

As for those using laptops, the issue is that they generally don't run at their listed speeds because the manufacturers throttle them. Laptops don't have good cooling at all, so they're handicapped to keep them from overheating.

As for manufacturer X being crap...they all are. Every single one will cut corners somewhere to bring their prices down. If you want the good stuff, you need custom built :)

Is it worth it to upgrade to an i7. I don't have a lot of money to spend but my cpu gets to 75-80 percent for the SM encoder and adobe encoder so i am thinking I need a more powerful computer. Thoughts?

Well, I'm not savvy either, but someone directed me to newegg.com, (also I believe Tiff recommended them) & I got a decent Lenovo from there.
Best Buy, noooo, maybe for a part or something, I got a laptop cooling thing there.
Also look up the thread, Computer Shopping or something, it's by twistedprincess.
Also..the I7's a cotdamn expen$ive, I personally can't say if it's worth the extra $.

Lol and theres me using a £200 desktop amd
Windows10 has unlocked a ton of extra performance out of the amd fx 8core chips. They were a bit ahead of there time and are now showing massive performance gains granted they are not as quick as a £800 i7 cpu. But your talking £270 for the fx9590 5gig 16mb cashed 8 core. The watercooler required is included in that price. They are literally only now windows 10 is here finally coming into their own

I literally just use a amd athlon x4 860k over clocked to 4.7
And 16gb of 1866mhz ram. Calibrates at 1280x720p best settings for 35 - 40% of the cpu. But I have a decent cooler as its only running 40oC

I7 on the high end is fuss free however lol. Its swings and roundabouts as although Intel are rated higher Amd are way way ahead of Intel in the virtual reality stuff.

There are new chips out by amd at the end of the year that have a 40% inprovement per clock with the Zen series and Intel have had major issues with the chip yeld on there new designs.

Even graphics card wise under the direct x 12 tests amd cards which were performing way under NVidia are now out performing NVidia cards. Because finally the end user is getting better multicore support from the software with Windows 10 and directx 12

Also its worth thinking about upgrades. Are you going to settle now on that 8gb of ram. But it comes in 2 4gb chips so a 16gb upgrade is 2 8gb chips check the number of slots of ram you can have and only buy paired kits. 32gb is it 4 8gb chips or 2 16gb chips.

I would get a desktop for camming its more of a workhorse than a sexy laptop but damn laptops are sexy they never did master a real gaming laptop that performs as well as a desktop

Hey, I'm undecided between new laptop Lenovo IdeaPad y700 and refurbished HP Pavilion 15-ak002nt Gaming. By the second I can also buy 3 year warranty for additional 55 eur, the first has 2 years warranty. They have exactly the same specs (i7-6700HQ, 16 GB ram, 1 TB hard drive, NVIDIA GeForce GTX 950M (4 GB) , 2 USB 3 ports...But the refurbished is a bit cheaper and has Win 10 installed (so with that in mind its more than a bit cheaper). What do you think would be better to buy? Budget is a problem and they are both under 900 eur (Lenovo is under 900 WITHOUT Windows) as I want. Thanks!
