View Full Version : What antidepressants have worked for you?

I've tried most of the anti-depressants that have been mentioned (dealing with depression about 13 years now). I finally found the right combination of 150 mg wellbrutrine quick release (SR) in the morning, 20mg Prozac with food and cymbalta at night, forgot how many mg though. It's helped my depression, my fatigue, PMDD and pain... But there is the possibility of developing Seratonin Syndrome when mixing these Rx and many other prescriptions together. Nothing was helping me for the longest time b/c my Dr.s had me on prescriptions that when they were taken together couldcause SS. It was years before the right Dr said, oh your meds can't be taken together and she changed one Rx and I was feeling better w/in 24 hours.

^ yeah I didn't know you could take so many ssri. Since getting off the lexapro I've been taking a tiny bit of the celexa and paxil. I hope it doesn't screw me up but it's been so many years since i've been on the celexa and i need to be normal by the 11th for work so I am taking both. Though I don't have another script for the paxil only celexa so hopefuly it works ok.

I have been taking it for about 3 years now and it is for both anxiety and depression. I have never had any bad side effects from it besides the horrible withdrawl of when I miss a dose for a day or 2 (mental withdrawl, not so much physical). I used to be on 10mg but it wasn't enough because I was still snapping at people and getting pissy for no reason. My boss even talked to me about it because he said I was being "mean" to my trainees lol. I went up to 20mg and that seems to be good but I do still have some social anxiety. I usually use alcohol to combat that but I am tired of using booze for that purpose. It is stupid and I am not even supposed to drink on these meds anyway! I am thinking about adding a small dose of xanax in there for those times when I need the extra boost of anti-anxiety. Oh and for the person who was talking about prozac-i had to go on it once because I started having obsessive thoughts about the afterlife and death-the prozac fixed that but turned me into a half-retarded zombie with a 5 second memory. I had to stop that crap after less than a year. Just an fyi its really hard to treat ADD AND anxiety at the same time because the medications tend to cancel eachother out. That is why when I need to be hyper and focused for work I'll take my adderal and deal with the extra anxiety-if I need to be relaxed (like to have sex with my boyfriend) I'll take a bit of xanax or and have the sex before I get too sleepy and pass out. it's such a balancing act. I used to drink booze AND take adderal which would both keep me awake and alert AND take away my social/sexual anxiety. It works great but it also is super unhealthy, gives you a hang over and makes you feel like an alcoholic. I wouldn't recomend it. This is why I am trying to find another solution. Not drinking and then adding a small bit of xanax JUST for those times I need to be social seems to be working ok but I've only been trying this out for 2 weeks. I am just proud that ive been able to have (and enjoy!) sober sex with my man. I consider only taking a teeny bit of xanax for that to be sober because I don't "feel" anything from the xanax, I just know that its helping me from having that panic feeling. My mom thinks I was molested as a child which causes my anxiety but I honestly don't remember and don't know if I actually was molested or not.

Michele, have you noticed any effect from the ashwaganda? I was looking into trying nootropics like noopept or aniracetam but I got overwhelmed with all the different possibilities, I research stuff almost too much sometimes. I'm tired of spending money on natural supplements that don't work.
So right now I've restarted the Venlafaxine...I'm half relieved and half devastated I'm going back on, for the third time round now.

Hahah. I can research things for hours a day. Right now it's cat food since I'm transitioning my kittens to adult food. I'm not sure really. I haven't felt normal in so long now and i added the new antidepressant so i'm not sure. I started clorophyl again and that's making me feel a but energetic. I started researching adaptogenic herbs and got overwhelmed and my friend knows about them and recommended the ashwaganda so I got that. Not really sure though. geez I never looked up interactions ad it can have severe interactions with benzos. especially Kolonopin which I am on. I also have immune related illness and it can increase it because it stimulates the immune system. wonderful. Now I read that all the negative things will start rolling in.

^I suppose it depends whether your natural levels are high or low? That's why I give up after a while and try to go without taking anything, it's too complicated sometimes. It's a matter of balancing everything out but it's hard when it's half guesswork.

Would anyone object to a main "Mental Health" thread? There are several threads about anxiety and depression and medications, and I thought it might be a good idea to have one thread for sharing information and support. I was going to create one, but thought some might be uncomfortable having it in the public section.
Thoughts?

I'm all for it.
Zoloft has worked pretty well for me. I have had to increase my dosage from 25mg to 100mg though and supplement with benzos when I have extra anxiety.

Where? Life support? I'd like to keep my thread going. I'm worried a bunch of people who aren't struggling like us might come in and be all" it's in your head crap". But You can do what you want. I know you from here and the other site so I've read what you went through and trust you. Some others idk.

Are any of you getting resistance from your doctors when you want to change meds? Are they listening to your complaints with the medication?
In my experience, it depends on both the doctor and the complaint about the medication. "I don't feel like myself/am in a constant mental fog/etc." has proven to be more effective than "I don't feel like this medication is doing anything" in most cases. Whenever I've gone with the latter, the response is usually just to increase the dose rather than change meds altogether.

Mine changed mine from paxil to lexapro and now celexa. I feel pharmacists now more about these things. I've been having really bad anxiety and Now i'm screwed because i have to leave at 4am tomorrow. My poor cat may have to have an eye operation and she's 9 months old her 4th eye ulcer. That may be why I feel so horrible today. I'm suppose to be packing and getting ready now i'm all stressed about this and apparantly my mom thinks I'm not as ill as I think( she was talking about my immune neuropathy). Yeah I want to be constantly dizzy, have shooting pains throughout my body, blurry vision, tingling limbs, numerous other symptoms, yeah and can't work. make myself. yes I WISH that were true!

Lexapro worked best for me. It was amazing, I felt like I was able to live a normal life for the first time in years. Then the generic was introduced and my insurance stopped covering it :c
I had a horrible time on Celexa, it basically broke reality for 2 months, I can't even remember most of that time period at all, aside from not being able to eat, sleep, or leave my bedroom without having horrendous panic attacks. I ended up developing agoraphobia due to the persistent side effects.
Unfortunately everyone reacts differently to different medicines. Hopefully you can find something that works well for you!

Moderators can merge threads. But that doesn't seem necessary in this situation.
Honestly, R-209, you might find it more useful to join a mental-health community outside of our sex-worker forum. It makes sense for Michele11 to start a thread here, as she works in the sex industry, and it makes sense for you to contribute to her thread. But since you are not a sex worker, it makes more sense for you to start a mental-health thread in a forum concerned with mental health. Ya know?
That's just my own opinion. Not trying to shut anyone down by any means.

I don't really care because I know R209. But yeah it's mostly woman responding most men aren't going to admit to issues. So that might be a good suggestion for him. He can read her and contribute or whatever. Thanks Charlie for looking out I appreciate it. But I'm a mess eight now and leaving in a few hours so this will be helpful. Maybe I'll start one about working with anxiety etc. I usually am game on . on my trips but I'm doubting this one since I'm really not well ATM.

^^ Is your antidepressants causing these side effects? Sounds scary

I don't know up until last year I never took meds. The only thing I ever took regularly for a measurable length of time was the xanax for a few months. I swear, it's like EVERYTHING panics me lately. I really hated trying to talk to a dr about this last time I went (nothing wrong w/ the dr, I mean to say I hate the situation). In any case I canceled my old zoloft prescription but I'm hoping I can use the same one upon request and I'll try cutting the pills in 2 and see how that works.

I'm all in. This is a very serious issue and if being able to make this information easier for those who are looking for it I will always support it.

Oh my god I hate these doctor appointments so much. Maybe it's better if you've been to the same physician for years but I've moved around so much, talking to a total stranger about this I'm just like um...
In any case I saw someone at my hometown physicians office and he's prescribing lexapro for me so hopefully that will help.
I can't believe that dr I met at the club gave me xanax from the start...the office I went to today, the nurse asked if I was still taking xanax and I was like how do you know that?? I guess each time a prescription got called in for me their office got a notification.
