Yeah, Suzanne's story was especially sad.
Am I the only one who kinda hated Judy King? I feel like her character was just trying too hard. First, she's poly, which is fine, but they make it out as though it's some big, sexy reveal when it was just kinda "eh." They set her up to have this "massive conflict" with Yoga Jones, but I felt like for all the scenes about it... they never really broke the surface of this shallow disagreement. And then entire thing with the camera, the kiss, pretending to be a lesbian... I didn't find it entertaining, or even really believable, at all. I hope she still ends up getting out and leaving next season, not getting stuck there longer because of the conflict at the end. She had way too much air time for how bizarre and unlikable her character was.
Lolly was also mentally ill before she got locked up. Judy King's role was completely unnecessary. She entered the prison as a big celebrity, I believe the writer used Paula Deen as her original character for the most parts. But the plot itself was not so interesting ...her relationship with miss washington was a hit and miss. to me, the most impressive role in this show is RED.

They seem to do a lot of interesting backstory reveals the season and it was very sad.
I also kind of dislike Judy King's character. Wasn't she supposed to be like Martha Stewart though? I believe she was put there to show the difference in the way prisoners can be treated in a prison, specially celebrity prisoners.

I cried over Lolly big time. Felt so bad for Suzanne and the boy. Why the hell would you eat a live baby mouse, eat the damn dead flies !!
This season was waaaay more interesting than last but I also feel like all they did was borrow from recent race related headlines..Martha Stuart/Paula dean , eric garner w poussey, black lives matter riots, Sandra bland (not mentioning her name after she died) etc. it was all race based this season and it felt a bit heavy handed, and taken from obvious real life hot media stories.
I'm also confused as to why they are humanizing pennsatuckys rapist while demonizing veterans. I also come from a military family and while I have some real problems w army culture they aren't all these sadistic nasty fucks they made them out to be. That part was ridiculous. Oh and the only real racist white ppl in prison are the poor rural ones cause rich yuppies like piper couldn't possibly also be racist..

^ totally. I agree w all of that. I actually didn't think about how Pensatucky forgiving her rapist contrasted with the villainizing of the veteran guards.
Omg the mouse wtf......I think I made myself forget that part.....

This season was TOO upsetting for me at times. Sofia in the SHU, maritza and the mouse scene, and the part where Suzanne beat the shit out of her ex was jus too much for me to watch.
i have to say i was disappointed when i recently saw a pic of the writing team for OITNB and there were no black women(in fact all writers appeared to be white or pass for white), black female storylines are a huge part of the show, i cant lie it made me see the show a little differently.
I still love it but this season had so much pain and literally no redemption, it was so sad.
RE: pipers branding, she so had that shit coming, I liked her more than i ever have once it happened lol she seemed more humble .
Pousseys death was obviously heartwrenching i lost it seeing taystee and soso cry over her.
I dont think daya will shoot.

I don't think Daya will shoot but I would bet that gun is going to go off somehow and probably hit someone.

I don't understand why Daya didn't hand the pistol over to others. She has a kid and appearantly not up to this yet.

I'm also a screenwriter too and would love to write a show similar to OITNB but make it about strippers and strip clubs. Been dancing for 12 years and have a lot of stories.

I actually had the thought as I was watching this season, that this creator (Jenji Kohan, I believe it is? Too lazy to look up right now...) always seems to tackle "rougher/illegal-ish" subjects and make them super interesting to watch. And I wonder if she might foray into a show about sex workers some day?

That would be interesting. There'd be so many stories to tell. I've heard stories from other girls that have made my jaw drop. Would love to write a series about this stuff.

i never would have guessed that caputto was actually an extremely decent dude. poor Soso and her beautiful hair..and wow those rape scenes with pennsatucky were so hard to watch! I'm only 2 episodes away from finishing it. its a bit slower, but i love the backstories, that's my favorite part of the show anyways. and piper is a fucking bitch
I love the dualities and plot twists within the show. I love that the viewer has to earn these and they aren't given right away, especially the backstories. It makes you question the way you stereotype and view someone after the truth comes out later in either a backstory or a major plot twist.
That combined with a wide array of actually relatable characters makes the show so amazing to me. One of the only TV non-classic or non-scifi shows I can sit through.

^I do like Pennsatucky more this season, actually. She scared the fuck out of me before.
I love all of the characters so much because we are eventually shown the reason(s) they are how they are, and it's 100% out of their control. Either something they were born into, genetics, or something they fell into that wasn't their fault.
A lot of the characters remind me of my childhood and who I was surrounded with growing up in a very low income area but going to school with people who had very high incomes. I saw major hidden problems on each end of the sprectrum (very poor vs very rich) then, and I see them in these characters too. I think it's important to show.

There will be a lot of house cleaning with characters only because now that the show exploded, they will demand way higher pay since they're all recognizable celebs now. And the show can't afford to pay that many characters high rates. Ugh I hate how my stupid logic always destroys the fun of fantasy lol
I'm scrolling down without reading because I'm guessing there are spoilers in this thread!!
As for my own personal complaints...
First of all, it feels like they're trying way too hard to turn every main character into a genius/saint/voice of the people. Like, I get it that we shouldn't stereotype prisoners, and that some of them are very educated and wise. And I get it that there are plenty of bad, stupid people out there who aren't in prison. But it feels like every single person on that show is turning into a wrongfully jailed martyr. Which I don't buy at all!
I'm also not sure how they managed to take one of the most enjoyable and tension-building characters - Alex - and turn her into a whiny, paranoid little bitch. Piper feels completely unnecessary at this point - she looks and feels like a straight woman now, and her plotlines are SO boring. And their relationship isn't believable in the slightest. Any spark they had during the first two seasons has totally sizzled out. It feels like they're trying way too hard to appease queer viewers, which is obnoxious. The sex scenes are cringe-worthy, forced, and gratuitous.
I love the creativity of the anecdotes strewn throughout the show - fun tidbits about how prisoners make their daily lives more interesting, etc. But without a unifying villain / problem, it all starts to fall apart.
It's almost like OITNB is gearing up to do some serious house cleaning, character-wise, in future seasons. Maybe some of these complaints we have are intentional, because the producers / writers are going to resolve them in the future, but couldn't just cut characters out too suddenly. Like maybe next season, Piper and Alex won't be on the show at all, and the main characters will be Red and Poussey or something.
Lastly, I'm annoyed by how damn happy all of the prisoners seem. There are moments of sadness, but it feels like every single scene is about bonding! and positive attitudes! and wisdom! They're always singing, joking around, etc. I get it that they don't want the show to have a miserable feel to it, but the first two seasons had a certain amount of gravity that is lacking in the third.
Ugh! That's all for now. I'm only 5-6 episodes in, so we'll see how my perspective changes...

For season 4:
- Piper's only redeeming quality will be if she uses her odd position of power to create something, maybe a program of some sort, to provide benefit to the other inmates. She's such a boring character I don't get it
- I love all characters and my favorites fluctuate too much. I can see a little bit of people I know or Ive met in all of them
- It makes me kind of sad to watch because it doesn't deny that most prisoners are impulsive or prone to bad decision making due to mental illness they are not being treated for (not just referring to Lolly actually at all) or environments they were born into and neglected in
- Their collective creavity level must be insanely high just being forced to interact with so many different types of people and "criminals" (many are not actually criminals obviously). It's sad that all that's missing for most of them is or was a lack of resources
Sorry for all the highjacking lol
