I consider myself a sex worker. I've stripped, done video fetish work, and one-off fetish sessions. I read this definition today:

"The industry includes 'all of those legal and illegal adult businesses that sell sexual products, sexual services, sexual fantasies, and actual sexual contact for profit in the commercial marketplace.*'"

Kate Hausbeck et al., "Sex Industry and Sex Workers in Nevada," in Social Health of Nevada: Leading Indicators and Quality of Life in the Silver State, ed. Kate Hasubeck, Barbara Brents, and Crystal Jackson (University of Nevada at Las Vegas: CDC Publications 2006), http://cdclv.unlv.edu/healthnv/sexindustry.html

as quoted in "Sex Worker's Unite" by Melinda Chateuvert (p. 123)

*Although you could broaden this definition to include people who trade sex for goods and services within their communities.

I've read in some places that full-service workers find the term "prostitute" offensive because of its origins, but I've seen mixed evidence on that. I avoid using it because I personally have never done full-service work, and I don't want to offend anyone.
