Yea I installed AVG after installing apps and things...I also gave the apps permission to be on the computer so that they could do their thing and that helped. Pity my motherboard is fucked somehow now. Guess it'll be a little while longer before I can actually work off the new pc.

If your motherboard was messed up then your pc wouldnt turn on. Do you have your motherboards driver disk? Or the serial model number and will find you a link. Motherboards are powered by the bios. So if you had a virus or something in that on a new pc as well. How the hell did it get there?

I am running avast and I haven't messed with windows defender settings, I bet that is it. Kind of a moot point however as I'll be splitcamming going forward. Now that I realize my new laptop can handle it I am all over it.

Yes if you just bought it, take it back. Change it out for a new one. You may even want to check the reviews to see if that particular model has that issue frequently. If so get something different.

Just a quick question about your laptop?
When you press the power button. Does the hdd spin? Does the power light come on?
If the answer is yes
First press and hold the power button down. The laptop can be stuck in sleep mode and a soft reset can sometimes work.
Second if above doesnt work.
Does the laptop have a FN key?
Some laptops have a presentation setting. FN key. F1 etc.
It might just be set to presentation to protector mode.
Do the have a secondary display? If the laptop have a hdmi out. Plug it into a TV or monitor. Some have vga ports or hdmi if it works doing this its the screen power inverter. Or the laptop has become set to display on a non existent screen.
Some nividia updates have been known to stop the ability to use both the laptop screen and a monitor.
Hope it turns out to be one of the above. Apart from the screens power inverter.

Brand spanking new laptop and I have the same issue as the old one. It says plugged in not charging. Granted the battery percentage isn't going down, but still it's annoying. Checked my connections, did the whole reboot without the battery, uninstalled the battery drivers and rebooted. Now I just have it powered off for a while. That seemed to do the trick on the old one. Perhaps it's an overheating issue? Suggestions?

it is a Lenovo? My laptop from them came with software from them that was supposed to promote optimal battery health by only having my battery charge to like 60% before it would go into plugged in not charging. If it is, mine had a setting where you could change it to maximum battery life and it would charge normally. I no longer have that app after a fresh install of my operating system, otherwise I'd tell you the app name to look for.

It's an Asus. I've been all over the battery and power settings, but I have wondered if that might be it. I read a lot of forums from people with new laptops who said that not charging to max was intentional. I also heard that I should drain and recharge my battery but I am nervous to drain it because what if it doesn't recharge?

Take it back. Every single time I've purchased a big ticket item I took it back. 3 Times at most. Don't be afraid to take it back. You may need to wait it out until you can put more money towards the purchase. Or just go with a different model. The more work you do on it the less likely it is you can return it. Most cases its non-refundable the moment you open the tower or replace hardware. Take it back and make them help you. If they can't do that then get your money back. It doesn't make sense to modify a computer that doesn't work straight out of the box.

Now it is randomly charging normally. I seriously think it might be an issue with the bum outlets in this house. I live in a house that is over 100 years old. I tend to think that because my HP did the exact same thing - plugged in not charging, none of the online fixes worked, then randomly the next day charges normally. I have it plugged into a surge protector but I bet if i tried a different outlet (or maybe the surge protector needs to be replaced) that would fix the issue. Fully charged now and indicates that it is charging.
