Yeah I was going a bit crazy yesterday and about to blow the massive tip my slave gave me on a new lappy. Then my hubby reminded me my current beast of a lappy is 32gb, 1tb, latest i7 and latest graphics card so i am better off getting another monitor for it and editing on that at home, then sticking with my original plan to get something portable to do stuff on the go with. So I might go for the surface pro after all, and maybe even just the 4 rather than the 6. I hate computer shopping, i can never decide!
Totally forgot to report back on this. I DID get the surface pro 6 and it's AMAZING! I have been using premiere pro at the same time as after effects and having multiple browser windows open at the same time. It does not miss a beat. It takes amazing pics and automatically creates these cool little video previews from your media. And it's sooooo freaking small and cute, I take it everywhere now :)

thank you so much !! That’s what I was looking for. I’m in a crunch and can’t wait to order one so I’m overpaying at BB
And apparently SW has been storing emails that I deleted from my inbox. I will get that cleared up once I have a laptop up and running. Thank you ladies again!

Can someone please tell me if there is an update to the original link ? I tried it and it’s not working- I also searched on the Boleyn site and can’t find it :( My laptop crashed and I need to buy one ASAP - thank you in advance
Here's a more recent article for Computer Shopping and what to pay attention to https://boleynmodels.com/blog/computer-shopping-for-cammodels/
The older article is here https://boleynmodels.com/blog/black-friday-computer-guide-for-cammodels/

I've updated the original post. Getting a computer at Best Buy is still a good option when you do the homework. Use it for a few days and then you can return it directly if it's not up to par. I used to be afraid to order computers from Amazon but it turns out the return policy is super quick...if it's under their warranty. It took 5 days for a return, refund and a new delivery.

Ughhhh - I was going to buy the ASUS ROG Strick Scar Edition i7- 16g 1tb 128ssd with a 1060 6gb graphic - but - after reading the reviews on Newegg to many overheating reports and loud fans - my previous laptop was a Lenovo and I never had a problem with it until this and it’s 7ish years old - trying to breath and regroup - just super bad timing for me to lose my laptop but I dont want to panic and blow 1k on a bad decision -

What exactly did your laptop do? You may just need to do a reset. You can either do a reset that wipes out all files or a reset that saves files, but wipes out all programs.
I just recently reset a 6 year old Lenovo P500 with a 3rd generation I7 processor and it can still handle live streaming, encoders and some video games.

It would not boot up - when you turn it on it goes to “Preparing Automatic Repair” then a black screen - we tried to open it using another operating system but couldn’t get past the security so we pulled the harddrive and tethered it to another computer and got all my stuff off of it and then onto a backup - I thought I had my recovery key for Windows but I can’t find it since My move so I called Lenovo to get it thinking they had my info but they didn’t - so I’m waiting for my son-in-law to call me back with my serial numbers in the am - I left my laptop at his their house - it may be salvageable I’m not sure yet- an upgrade was on my list for this summer and keeping this Lenovo as a backup - I have to have a laptop for my vanilla job too - for it to go down now though was just bad timing - March is a shitty month for me financially- car tags/ insurance - my professional license renewal dues etc....

update - I ended up buying the ASUS I mentioned above - the others were either out of my price range or had some sort of issues on the reviews too so..... Just got it up and running tonight and Im loving it so far - cant wait to cam with it tomorrow :)
The hard drive is cooked on my old Lenovo - im going to replace it once I recoup a bit of money so I have a backup
Thank you to everyone who has contributed to this thread:-*
Edited to Add - had no clue that this laptop did not have an Ethernet port :O Apparently thats a thing now - I didnt bother to look for one since I assumed they were standard on a laptop - a trip back to Best Buy and 25.00 for an Ethernet adapter and all is good -
Clients definitely noticed the difference on skype

I went on http://www.newegg.com & was eyeing a cam. I looked @ cams also on best buy, but they're high there. I may go check out their laptops
But, then I started looking @ laptops, I want win8, I have a refurb lenovo, & an Asus (win10) neither of which I like.

Anything at Best Buy is more expensive than online. Go to Best Buy and find the laptop you want and look for it online. IMHO, Windows 10 is better than Windows 8.

Hi ladies
i have been reading through the posts on here as i need to look to get a new laptop, currently using a hp i7 dual core processor, splitting three sites, two just cam it sites and sm with the new sm connect. Problem is sm is really cpu heavy and now with the new connect its messing up my other sites so need a new laptop. What would be the best laptop to purchase so i could run these three sites and possibly add another two more without it compromising my streaming quality

okay so i have been researching computers like craaaaazy. is 8 core / 16 thread the best that can fit in a laptop?? it's the highest i have found
this is the one i'm really considering. its expensive, just under $4k but i realllllly don't want a desktop.
Processor: 9th Generation Intel® Core™ i9-9900K (8-Core, 16MB Cache, up to 5.0Ghz w/Turbo Boost)
Video Card: NVIDIA® GeForce RTX™ 2070 8GB GDDR
Memory: 32GB, 2x16GB, DDR4, 2400MHz
Hard drive: 512GB RAID0 (2x 256GB PCIe M.2 SSDs) + 1TB (+8GB SSHD) Hybrid Drive
does anyone know if this is powerful enough to run 2 versions of FMLE and 2 versions of OBS ...would upgrading the graphic card or memory to 64 GB help me splitcam more sites??? i really need a splitcamming monster lol
heres the link incase, i selected the better processor and more memory

If money is an issue, max out your video card because that's more difficult to upgrade later. You can easily upgrade your RAM memory later yourself.

You'll be able to operate the Hubble Telescope with this set up. Splitcamming shouldn't be an issue. But WHY not a desktop? You would be able to cut down on the the cost if you had one built.

Hey, so I'd like to offer some quick feedback:
I recently bought a new computer with an AMD Ryzen processor. Specifically, the Ryzen 7 2700x. It's AMAZING how blazing fast these things are!
My specs are the following:
* AMD Ryzen 7 2700x
* 32GB of DDR4 RAM @ 3000MHz (2 sticks of 16GB each in dual channel).
* Nvidia RTX 2060 graphics card
* One 256GB NVME high speed Solid State Drive.
Man, this thing can handle multiple sites at once AND play videogames at the same time no questions asked! Mind you, for Streamate I'm using their new interface, SM Connect with the web encoder, but it's quite well optimized and it looks like they did a good job with WebRTC (The HTML5 tech behind the interface).
So yeah, for this year I'd recommend trying AMD Ryzen. They're a GREAT bang for the buck!
AMD is releasing new CPUs soon, so keep an eye on that.
EDIT: Below is an example of a build you could order with IBuyPower (https://www.ibuypower.com/), which is quite a great bang for the buck!

More memory (RAM) is always better. It improves performance because your computer doesn't have to access the harddrive as much.
Desktops are less expensive and easier to upgrade. If your not camming from multiple different locations desktops will work just fine.

Hello everyone.
I know there are girls here who have a lot of technology knowledge.

I started camming again last year and I'm having difficulties because of my laptop.
It's a HP model 14-v064br.
- Microprocessor: 4th generation Intel Core i5-4210U processor, 1.7 GHz
with Turbo Boost up to 2.7 GHz. Dual Core Processor.
- Memory 8 GB DDR3L SDRAM (1 DIMM).
- Video card: NVIDIA GeForce 830M graphics card with 2048 MB of dedicated DDR3 video memory and up to 4096 MB of total graphics memory.
- Hard drive 1 TB (5400 RPM).
Screen 14 "(1366 x 768 ) High Definition BrightView WLED monitor.
Wireless connectivity 1x1 802.11b / g / n wireless local area network (WLAN).
Sound Beats Audio with two speakers.
Windows 10 pro 64 bit
Internet speed: 50 down and 23 up.
* UPGRADE:
I've added
+ 8GB RAM DDR3L and 120GB HD SSD Sata 6gb/s.
Now it's a little better, but not enough.
In 1080p I can transmit only one site. In 720p, two or three (scratching) sites.
If I use JustCamIt software, I can split the camera with only one site using Verysoft webcamsplitter. But depending on the site, it isn't possible because the
CPU usage goes as high as 80%.
* Without other things running; browsers, skype, plugins, editors, etc.
I want to be able to broadcast on three or four sites at the same time, comfortably and in the best possible quality.
Can use OBS, webcamsplitter, skype and other things that are necessary.
All advice and suggestion are welcome.

Hi Lucy, I moved your post over here because there's some really great suggestions already in this thread. To me it sounds like you'd be better off getting a new desktop build all together. Trying to upgrade what currently have may wind up costing more money with all the trial error. Here's another thread that goes over what certain specs you should look for when researching computers for streaming.

Hi DeepThoughts,
Yes, I decided to choose a desktop.
I was thinking about it... Well, I'm not very good at building computers; but I've a friend who maybe can help me (physical build).
I'm doing some research... At the moment I can invest at most $1.600,00.
I simulated some.

I think the video card and motherboard, could be a better options. Anyway, many adaptations are possible.

Do you have more stats that you can share? Is this a computer you already own or are you thinking about buying one? This going to depend on what camsite you want to use. When it comes to Camming I recommend PC over Mac. It will be a lot more compatible with most streaming software.

It's super light weight so great for travel camming. I didnt go crazy on the graphics card but I played a game on it and it was seamless. No more mobile phone hustling for me.

At a glance I would say yes it should be able to handle it because its a 10th generation I7 processor. BUT this model has an integrated graphics card that runs off of the computers ram and other resources. Look for a gpu that has Dedicated graphics instead of Integrated. It may cost a little more but will be much more capable of splitcamming without too many streaming issues.

Thanks for that thread and returning it is going to be a faff in the current situation going on. I’m off tomorrow as well so it was kind of an impulse buy before I leave, I’ll see how I get on and upgrade to a different one later down the line if need be. If I run into split-cam issues I’ll just cam on Streamate while I’m away.

I always consider the best gaming related products I can get and stay within my budget. You pay more upfront, but you get better quality, longer life from these products and can handle more of what you might need than other computer products not for gaming. Plus with a little research, you can get really good gaming products that will not bust your budget. PC Gamer is a good resource.

No I had done a quick 30 min test stream to see if I could smoothly have all my sites going at once, logged out after success and then the machine asked me if I wanted to update the BIOS... I’ve now learned that the policy is ‘just say no’ when it comes to that.
It was totally my fault and the company I bought it from is being very understanding to send me a replacement of exactly the same laptop. I won’t be doing any hardware downloads again lol.

UGH that graphic card!! I have had my eye on it since it came out. Want to sell my last build and rebuild with that graphic card. Please let me know how the blower is for you. Its just so sleek! Good price to but I would be up grading to at least 1tb SSD right out of the gate. Almost feels illegal to have this build and only 500GB. I imagine they were trying to keep the cost down though! I think you are Effing brave to go with liquid cooling though. HUGE HUGE risk! I would never trust it on my main build. Save your money on the monitor for now and get your self a good NAS so you can back everything up cause if (and when) That cooling pops a leak this build is nothing but scrap!!!

The one i linked is just what was on my wishlist from before. I went in the end with pc specialist's recommendations as follows:
Case
FRACTAL DEFINE 7 XL BLACK QUIET TOWER CASE
Processor (CPU)
AMD Ryzen Threadripper 3970X 32 Core CPU (3.7GHz - 4.5GHz, 147MB CACHE)
Motherboard
ASUS® ROG STRIX TRX40-E GAMING (DDR4, Wi-Fi 6, CrossFireX/SLI) - RGB Ready!
Memory (RAM)
64GB Corsair VENGEANCE DDR4 3000MHz (4 x 16GB)
Graphics Card
11GB NVIDIA GEFORCE RTX 2080 Ti - HDMI, 3x DP GeForce - RTX VR Ready!
1st Storage Drive
2TB SEAGATE BARRACUDA SATA-III 3.5" HDD, 6GB/s, 7200RPM, 256MB CACHE
1st M.2 SSD Drive
500GB SAMSUNG 970 EVO PLUS M.2, PCIe NVMe (up to 3500MB/R, 3200MB/W)
Power Supply
CORSAIR 850W RMx SERIES™ MODULAR 80 PLUS® GOLD, ULTRA QUIET
Power Cable
1 x 1 Metre UK Power Cable (Kettle Lead)
Processor Cooling
Corsair H150i PRO Hydro Series High Performance CPU Cooler
Thermal Paste
ARCTIC MX-4 EXTREME THERMAL CONDUCTIVITY COMPOUND
Sound Card
Creative Sound Blaster® Audigy™ FX OEM
I know the case and sound card aren't the best but i don't care about looks and I believe i can upgrade the sc at a later date. AMD actually recommend liquid cooling for threadrippers so I'm sure hoping this is ok?!
I have a nas all ready to go and i got that predator monitor in the end, it went for a steal yay

^^ Holy shit sticks this is almost exactly my last build!! I have pretty much all this but 2 1TB SSD's (samsung of course) I got one and my husband bought me one for my birthday :D . I have a huge case with 6(??) fans in it cause I didnt want the water cooling. That Threadripper is going to blow your mind though I promise!! Also I went with the Combaterwing keyboard, and mouse and I forget my Screen. I have had three in the last little while cause I always have better and better on my wishlist and fans pick them up for me. They are a popular gift Item for sure. I will check it out but I would love to know how the Predator monitor is. Is it 4G??

Yes 4k woohoo. It's not the absolute best but it sells for £700 and i got it for £200 which meant i could then afford the mx keyboard and mouse otherwise i was gonna have to scrimp on those! I'm just nervously awaiting the pc to arrive now, its new home is ready and waiting. I'm probably only going to be dealing with 1080p footage but i wanted to future proof. Can't wait;D
Is this powerful enough to handle split camming? https://www.technocorp.com.au/computers/thinkpad-l590-14-fhd-ips/81186-611433/
