Designer things = If you got the money treat yourself! if you don't Savers / Buffalo Exchange / Thrift store X here! :D When it comes to Pole dancing platforms, and quality corsets, they are 100% worth the money! And I am not just saying that because thats what I sell for a living... Ok maybe I am :p
I was just on The Real Real. I brought a pair of Balenciaga heels and a silk scarf for about $200. If you want designer clothes go consignment.

I don't think it's worth it, but I've given up trying to impress people. I just don't care anymore. If I needed them for appearances at work, that's one thing, but I can make cheap outfits and purses look expensive by the way I style them. I tend to dress in monochromatic basics/classic styles, that are nicely made and in good shape. Also, I feel like certain things always make you look "expensive"... being in good shape, having good hair/makeup, wearing heels, a nice watch/simple jewelry, perfume, and nails neatly done... plus a good dose of confidence... that gives you an attractive presence.

As a guy, I buy the quality brands that are mid-priced and whose higher price is based on quality, e.g., Brooks Brothers, Ralph Lauren, Burberry and Hugo Boss. I may pay up to $1,000 for a great suit that is going to last me many years. I only have 5 suits, but, they are good quality suits and they make me look smart, professional and successful.
However, I think it is one thing to pay more for great quality, and it is something else to pay an ungodly price for the sake of pretentious vanity. In my humble opinion, unless you fart money, paying more than $1,000 on a men's suit (Armani, Gucci, Kiton, Hugo Boss, etc.) is plain stupid - an exception being if your job/career depends on it, e.g. if you are an investment banker or fortune-500 CEO or general counselor, etc. I don't believe the material on any suit is worth more than $1,000, so, if you pay more than that on a suit, you are just being duped by a company that is exploiting your own vanity.
When I try on a suit at a high-end department store, and ask the clerk how much it costs and he replies with some BS like - "This is the kind of suit worn by CEOs, investment bankers, lawyers and doctors. A suit like this shows the world that you have attained wealth and status; that you are on top! You cannot put a price on that! The kind of men that try this suit on don't ask what it costs." etc. - that's when I know someone is trying to hustle me into spending more than what the suit is really worth. My response - "I don't care about any of that. I just want a good quality suit at a reasonable price, and, I am not paying extra to indulge my vanity. HOW MUCH?"
Dirty secret- thanks to stores like Ross, TJ Maxx & other outlets you can dress well without paying retail.
I agree with this. In Texas we have outlet stores for Neiman Marcus, Saks Fifth Ave, Ralph Lauren, Tommy Hilfiger, Brooks Brothers, etc. Also, Macy's has a lot of sales throughout the year, and, Neiman Marcus has the after Christmas sale.
