Staying in the Keys at this point would be extremely foolish, get out there is still time.

DJ, I take back what I said about riding it out now that I see the revised track. It is really time to go now.

This is coming from someone who played in the snow during the Blizzard of '78, leaned against the sustained winds during Gloria to see how long I could stay on my feet before being pushed over by a gust and who drove a car to the seawall during the onset of Hurricane Bob so that I could laugh as the waves sloshed over the wall and pounded the hood of my car, which back then was a little compact. I have little fear of most storms and think that people panic way too easily, especially nowadays.

But, between the wind and flooding, this thing is strong enough to potentially leave the Keys looking like Zombie Apocalypse. You could be cut off from power for months and food and water for several days. You could even be cut off from the mainland if there is damage to the 7 mile bridge. Seriously now, this is not going to be one of those fun hurricanes that makes some people seek out a beach for a hurricane beach party. This sucker could leave you stranded and miserable for a long stretch.

Monroe County just opened four shelters to accommodate residents of the Keys, which are as follows:

▪ Coral Shores High School; 89951 Overseas Hwy; Plantation Key FL 33036 (MM89.9 ocean side)

▪ Marathon High School; 350 Sombrero Road; Marathon, FL 33050 (MM 50 ocean side)

▪ Sugarloaf School; 225 Crane Blvd.; Sugarloaf Key, FL (MM 19 gulf side)

▪ Key West High School; 2100 Flagler Ave.; Key West, FL 33040 (MM 2)

I hope you make your way to one and good luck.

A close cousin lives in Florida ( Orlando), and even though I invited him to fly out and stay with me, ( on Monday), he wouldn't.
Said he's going to ride it out.
Cut to yesterday, and he's shitting his pants with fear.
No disrespect to anyone who decides to stay,.,...... But if I knew an earthquake of catastrophic magnitude was going to happen in 5 days from now, I'd get the F..K out!
But, that's just me.
Oh, and an 8.0, earthquake just hit Mexico last night.

Same, I invited all my friends days ago from Orlando. They were all determined to stay even though they could afford to leave.SMH.

Furthurmore, they said if you choose to stay when you had every chance to evacuate, you're on YOUR OWN.

Fema has created a rumor control page because things are getting misconstrued.

Example: There are reports emergency shelters are required to accommodate pets and service animals belonging to people who have evacuated. This is TRUE. (September 8th 8)

There are also reports hotels are required to accommodate pets for people who have evacuated. This is FALSE. (September 8th 8)

Shelters

Congress passed the Pets Evacuation and Transportation Standards (PETS) Act (Pub. L. 109-308 (2006)) to ensure that emergency operations rescue, care, shelter, and meet the essential needs of household pets and service animals.

Hotels

Hotels and motels participating do not fall under the Pets Evacuation and Transportation Standards (PETS) Act (Pub. L. 109-308 (2006)). Please call the hotel before you go and ask if pets are permitted.

Hotels must accept service animals and individuals with access and functional needs should check with the hotel to ensure if accessible lodging accommodations are available to meet their needs.

I broke down and PM djoser and told him 1. If you are having any doubts get out now please 2. If you must stay go get that cat so you'll have company

When I was in high school friends and I took a road trip to Corpus Christi (Tex) and during a storm I went out on an abandoned, crumbling cement pier. The rain was beating down on me, and the wind almost carrying me, and for a few moments it was intensely cool. Then I hit a slippery algae patch and the wind blew me into the ocean. For a full two minutes I literally struggled for my life. I couldn't keep a hold on the pier, and I had all my clothes on. The rocks were sharp, and my hands kept getting cut up. The beach was too far and the waves too big to get there. I got out by using my wallet to wedge into a sharp rock and pulled myself out, barely. I crawled on the pier, tore up my clothes and emerged covered in algae and blood. It was not cool, and I did not feel affirmed or victorious. I just felt numb. At the end of the day we're all insects compared to the power of the earth.

Edit: I added this short anecdote as a way of saying, don't tempt death, it isn't rewarding or fun

I didn't stay to tempt death, trust me--and many thanks for trying to talk me into running away, like most people with sense would do.

There's a few reasons I stayed. Too hard to explain now.

But I am staying tomorrow night in maybe one of the best possible places--the Old Stone Church. It's huge, made of stone (obviously lol), and built like a fortress. A tornado will take it out, but otherwise we might just make it.

Took a couple other videos, had to get some of Key West before it is changed forever. Will post them here.

Even the friendlier ones freak if you try to pick them up, though. They're all basically feral.

I'd get angel at least, if I could, but she'd be sure to make a lot of noise, and then the OCD neurotic house manager would flip the fuck out on me and try to evict me (I've been threatened that if i even have an animal up here for an hour, i'm out). Then we're going to the stone church tomorrow, and they actually don't even know me (the manager got me a spot), no way can i bring a feral cat screaming in a box.

And I'd hate to just leave her in the apt alone, possibly to have the roof ripped off. I'll think about it though. Maybe there's some way.

For Florida homeowners who aren't too far from the coast, it might be worthwhile to purchase solar panels or solar roofs, and battery packs. Also exterior steel shutters. Something like this:

Great news that you're choosing the Church! I knew there had to be something solid down there. Given the brouhaha over the surge, I'd recommend you take a life vest or preserver with you....just in case, even a floatie board can buy time. You may be able to seal your phone, laptop, etc. to keep the waterproof as long as possible. Any kind of high carb food/snacks are good to pack. You don't have to buy bottled water, some extra jugs from the tap are good. If you have a flashlight, seal it and extra batteries with plastic. Make sure the GPS is turned on your phone in case rescue has to trace you. Sounds extreme but use a permanent marker to put your social sec # on your arm. If knocked unconscious they may need to contact your people to know what they can and can't treat you with. So, make a note in your phone with I_C_E next to your emergency contacts. Take it easy, Keep Calm, Carry On, and don't drink any adult beverages as it will make you bleed faster. Oh and take some lip balm with you to use as a salve on any cuts. It's waterproof and will seal it off. That's the best I can come up with off the top of my head. I'm gonna kick your ass when I come down there this Winter...just so you know!

Optimist

A good trick to seal your door is to use some large trash bags, slit open and wrap it over the top and pull under the bottom of the door jamb. It prevents the wind from forcing water in the cracks. You can take common grocery bags , ball them up and place them in the hinge and all other cracks. Cover your air conditioner with large plastic bag/tarp and duct tape it so it's like a bonnet. It really holds through the wind and rain. Anything you can unplug, do it to avoid something being damage or blowing and starting a fire from electrical surges. Lines will pop in the wind. If you have a gas line for your stove or hot water heater, turn it off. What often happens is the wind will blow out/knock out the appliances and then all you have is the gas building up.

OK Djoser, I just checked your info and that island is not as elevated as you think:
There are no shelters opening in the Florida Keys, the islands should be evacuated with the biggest Atlantic hurricane in history taking aim.

In a storm the size of Irma, if you stay on the Florida Keys, you will most likely need a rescue and one will not materialize. The chain of 42 Florida Keys ends with Key West, which sits about 90 miles from Cuba in the Atlantic Ocean.

Most of the island chain of the Florida Keys sits only three to five feet above sea level, reports CBS Miami. With a category 5 hurricane taking aim at the Florida Keys, the wave heights expected “would literally put the ocean over the islands,” warns Monroe Co. Emergency Operations Center Director Martin Senterfitt.

OK, there are school buses on the island right now. They are picking people up. You don't have to drive and run around getting gas or any of that.

If your "landlord" says anything about the cat, I will personally get a lawyer on her ass. She cannot evict you like that. An hour my ass. She has to send you a notice to remedy and wait 30 days. I enjoy suing assholes like that. She'd rather a small cat die alone? Say the word, man and I'll drop on her harder than this hurricane.

The Keys are going to be completely destroyed. "It's not clear that it's a survivable situation for anybody that is still there in the Keys."

Things have improved dramatically, thanks partly to the Cuba diversion and the delay in the north turn. Irma has gone from Cat 5 to Cat 3. Still dangerous, and still destructive. I'd say 50/50 chance my apt will be trashed. But the death toll is not going to be huge, as we all thought last night.

And if this green line projection is accurate, I'll be extremely happy. Though the odds are against it.

And many, many thanks for all the concern.

Here's a video I just shot, showing the Old Stone Church right across from my apt, where we are staying tonight for the worst part. Maybe this will reassure some of the worry. I know i am WAY less worried than last night.

Thank goodness it's a multi level church. That's more reassuring. Take your air conditioner units out of the window if you can, if it's not drilled in. It's easy for the wind/rain to get in through the sides.

There is a special place in hell for all the landlords who would go so low to threaten to evict their tenants to help other living beings in a time like this.

Anybody who may be in the path of storm..... if at all possible please evacuate. If you are going to hunker down and ride it out, please take all the suggested precautions.

This is solid gold advice!!!

There's an app, "zello walkie talkie" found in play store for androids, app store for I phone, can be used if no service to communicate w/fam & friends (it was used during Harvey)
Empty dishwasher & put in stuff you want to preserve, it's waterproof in there, it's secured to cabinets.
Take pics of every room, drawer, cabinet of your place.
Brevard county just increased the amount of chloramine (chlorine & ammonia mix) that's add to drinking water.
It's safe for humans dog & cats but
Not Birds
Probably too late but there it is..
Still prayers & good thoughts to all

Friend of mine: Why do you guys all drink during hurricanes?

Me: Because the worst part is waiting for them to show up.

We know we'll probably be fine but there's always that possibility that we'll be hit by a tornado or that the house will be hit by lightening. :(

Yup. I hate humans. My friend read online that they found about 50 pets outside, inside carriers. Like WHAT THE FUCK MAN??!!!

Whoever the fuck did that deserves to get caught right in the middle of the eye and die painfully.

If you can get my eviction off my record , (which is STILL) affecting my ability to rent an apt..... 4 apts later.......
I will blow you harder than any hurricane could. :-*

This hurricane makes me feel very worried. My grandpa is there. He's stubborn, in his late 70s and has the attitude that since he survived 2 heart attacks, if he survives great but if not, he said he lived a good life. I also have a friend out there who's afraid of flying and won't leave south Florida . I was just down in Georgia and drove back up to my home state from there. I counted 127 utility trucks heading down south and 2 military busses. I have a friend from my home state who's in the National Guard and has been activated to go to Florida to help. I know it's a lot to ask for but I really hope that all the Florida citizens who were either to stubborn or couldn't afford to leave, make it through.

If they are on East Coast....Palm Beach/Ft Lauderdale area..not to bad right now, more tropical storm conditions, ...west coast in Naples/Ft Myers will be a different story though.
