I was told San Diego is the safest big city in the country

To my knowledge, a lot of American cities bordering Mexican cities, are extremely safe.

There's 48 US-Mexico border crossings with 330 ports. How can it be so safe I think there's some unsafe border too.

I live in St. Louis now, just moved here from Wisconsin last year, and I guess we have the most murders per capita of any US city. It doesn't seem overly dangerous to me though, although just like any major city, you have your safe neighborhoods and your not-so-safe neighborhoods.

Do you live in the city or the suburbs? Thing about Saint Louis is that the CITY has a ton of murders, but the area doesn't.

Read the News.

Little to no safety, almost anywhere, but especially big cities. Of course, certain areas are protected & safer than others.
Personally, I actually feel fairly safe in my hick 'burb, but I keep my eye out always..I also know due to being on an area site, that's there's a fair amount of home robberies in the area.
The good thing here in my particular sitch is, there's almost always someone home. One of the guys here got a security cam from his job, he's supposed to install it here, but whether he actually will, I won't hold my breath on.
I rarely to never go to the city.
I want to get a flat small purse to wear against the body, for valuables, ID's etc.

Be aware of surroundings, always.

I live in the city, downtown. There are a lot of homeless people here, but they don't pester you if you politely say no when they ask you for money. Downtown doesn't seem too crime-ridden-I feel safe walking around alone. It's pretty boring downtown though for a big city-it's a ghost town at night after all the 9-5 people go home after work.

I heard East St. Louis (which is actually in Illinois across the river, not Missouri) is really bad and has a lot of crime though.
