No eagle, we have 120,000 deaths because of a kinda' bad virus. Any notion that we can ever control the behaviors and decisions of 330 million diverse people spread across a vast country like the U.S. is asinine. Many of the people who died probably could have protected themselves better but didn't, excluding of course the tens of thousands of helpless nursing home victims courtesy of the gross negligence of NY, NJ and CT.
Perhaps if the president didn't tell Americans in February, "we have 15 cases and soon it will be zero", more people would have taken the necessary precautions. It's estimated that 90% of deaths could have been avoided if social distancing was started 2 weeks sooner.
https://www.sciencealert.com/starting-isolation-two-weeks-sooner-could-have-saved-9-out-of-10-us-coronavirus-deaths
San Francisco was one of the first, or the first city to shut down. So far San Francisco has had 47 deaths. NYC had their first confirmed case around the same time as San Francisco. NYC has had over 22,000 deaths so far. NYC has approximately 10 times as many people as SF, but has had more than 468 times as many deaths. Norway shut down their country and Sweden didn't. There is little difference between the two countries, yet Sweden's death rate so far, is 10 times as higher than Norway's.
Do facts and evidence mean anything at all to you? Please stop gaslighting and insisting social distancing, wearing masks, and sheltering at home policies don't make a difference when the evidence is overwhelming that they do.

We've talked about the responses of Trump and NYC ad nauseum earlier in this thread. Instead of restarting the conversation all over again, it might make more sense to for you to go back and respond to what was posted when you complained months ago.
And with respect to Sweden and Norway, there are plenty of differences and your point is intellectually lazy. Now Sweden fared better than some U.S. states that DID shut down, but not as well as they could have. Why? Because they pulled a reverse NY/NJ/CT policy on nursing homes. While the tristate killed tens of thousands of people simply by sending sick people back to nursing homes, Sweden was not sending them to hospitals to begin with or otherwise isolating them. They have since revised that policy, much like the tristate has stopped sending sick old people back to kill more old people.
And don't accuse someone of gaslighting just because you're too lazy or emotionally invested to dig into the data. We now know a lot more than we did in mid-February. What I have been supporting is a more targeted approach based upon the science as we currently know it. Thank goodness that saner Governors, like the one in the state in which I reside, have a similar philosophy. What I have also been saying this whole time is that every restriction has a cost, which means that each has to be carefully weighted against the real benefits, as we now understand them, rather than recklessly applied.
When I wrote those last responses yesterday, my children were outside in the neighborhood playing with a bunch of other children. There were no masks anywhere and there pretty much never have been because it's ridiculous to do that to them outdoors. Even something as simple as that has a cost that includes a never-ending paranoia weighing on their developing psyches. We also don't turn the TV news on any more when they are inside with never-ending coronavirus hyperbole and melodrama. This is not dangerous to them and i won't scar them any more than necessary by making them feel like they live in some alternate reality. They are back in sports, will be in school in the fall (without masks) and will otherwise live normally, as they should.

^ Same all around with Florida, including the bars.
But as we now know this was inevitable. NY, NJ and CT might take a lesson from this in understanding that further destruction of whatever is left of their economies is not going to make it go away. I am thrilled with how this is playing out in FL and I wish we had done it sooner. It's time to protect the high risk and let this damned thing run its course.
We have locked down the nursing homes and are providing PPE to anyone who requests it through their county health department. Right now our newly infected are young and many are asympomatic. Our mortality rates are in check and our hospitalization rates for the newly infected are relatively low and our capacity has expanded. We also have become better at treating the more severe cases.
So now that we are ready I hope we keep this going until the worst of the surge subsides naturally. There is no vaccine coming anytime soon, so now it's time to bite the bullet and deal with it.

I blocked Rick a long time ago. I would suggest the same. People see what they believe and there’s no amount facts that are going to help. I don’t know if people are doing it intentionally or if they are maliciously spreading dangerous falsehoods?
I’m depressed. No one is doing what they need to do to get this pandemic under control. I hate to spread fear or despair, but I’m really scared what going to happen financially, with my health, with my friends and family.
The fact of the matter is people won’t change until it’s too late. Until the hospitals are too full and people are being traiaged. It’s scary to think it could get that bad because people won’t do their part for fucks sake. We have this beautiful life and planet and look what we as a species do to it. Sigh. No I’m not fear mongering most people will survive the virus, but the fact is too many people will die in a horrible way. Not to mention we don’t not the long term effects.
There’s really no sense in going down the rabbit hole of despair. I guess I’ll be grateful for everyday I’m alive and tell my mom I love her more often. Just focus on what I can control. Spend more time in prayer and meditation.

...IMHO we have to get over this ridiculous notion that we can somehow "control" or "contain" this thing if only we take drastic enough measures. We can't, just like we couldn't control the Spanish flu or any other highly virulent airborne disease. Heck we still can't even beat the flu or the common cold. Part of this is because we can't control how other people choose to live, at least not for very long. Now maybe if this thing was more deadly than it really is then you could sell more people on ongoing drastic measures, but they can read for themselves...and the realities are becoming increasingly clear.

Please stop with your gaslighting. There's a lot we can do to control or contain the virus. This isn't theoretical. There are other countries that have been able to do it. New Zealand has had only 22 deaths. Taiwan has had 7. We know what works. There's no way we could have prevented every single death, but we could have prevented many of them. There's no reason for over 128,000 Americans to have died from a preventable disease. We've had more deaths than any other country, and we're in the top ten in number of deaths per million. In most European countries, the number of new cases have plummeted, while we're seeing record numbers.
All you are doing is making false arguments. We could have controlled the Spanish Flu, but we didn't, because we were fighting a world war. Our army wasn't willing to quarantine soldiers who became sick. American Samoa was able to contain the Spanish Flu. Their governor quarantined every ship that came into their territory. They ended up with zero deaths from it. We're able to contain the flu and keep the number of deaths to a reasonable level. The flu isn't killing hundreds of thousands of Americans every year. Approximately zero Americans die from the common cold.
You're entitled to your view, but please be honest. You're opposed to doing what is necessary to contain the virus, not because it's not effective, but because you don't want to be inconvenienced.

I’ve seen quite a few videos of their local leaders getting called out about the rise in cases. They don’t seem to care.
Florida is just......I’m not going to say any words but......the numbers speak on the common sense of the people (esp the politicians and the law enforcement) there.

When you ignore someone here that person can still read and respond you your posts. I’ve had obsessed trolls responds to my posts like clockwork after I ignore them. Weird n creepy.

Is it possible people are getting reinfected with it again after recovering from it? I read somewhere someone saying that they had it twice. My mom had it & bc she has massive anxiety & needs to stay busy constantly, she went out after having it for a few days & did shit , like pick up paint to repaint her interior of her home *eyeroll*
She said she was asymptomatic, yet she & her husband both had the loss of taste & smell for about 2 weeks until she tested negative for it.
That kind of shit is what irks me about this whole thing. People are too dam selfish to just stay put whether they've had it or not. We know nothing much about this thing, its not safe!

Like you, I’ve also read that people could get reinfected. I’m not sure the rate of reinfection though....
Our society is reliant upon people working at all costs. My former coworker used to come in work sick (not giving a damn about infecting others) all because they didn’t want to use sick days because the manager would complain their work didn’t get done if they were out sick.
Weirdos.
You literally have to force people to stay home otherwise they be out denying that they’re sick whilst spreading their pathogens with ignorant bliss.
I don’t blame them per say......society has made people that way.
I also read another article about the factory workers (in the meat industry) would come to work sick but take Tylenol to lower their fever for the temp check. These factories ended up with numerous cases of coronavirus.
My mom is like that too....her ass had walking pneumonia once few years ago and was just out shopping n shit. I’m like bruh! GO HOME she didn’t rest at home till her doctor forced her.
This is why I trust no one provide a self assessment. I assume they are sick and mask up lol!

They were showing people on the news in Texas who were reinfected. I feel like this will not go away until full lockdown are enforced. I was watching a reality show set in another country I think Ecuador?. Local law was making sure people were not out after a certain time. Then here you have Target workers saying people are coming every day at certain times to hang out for hours smh.

Hey all-just popping on here to let everyone know, that I had such a severe case of Covid that 2 weeks ago, I was admitted to the hospital for pneumonia. My o2 was 82 when I was admitted and dropped over four times, in two days, to 79 (75 is generally when you’re intubated). I also had a variety of symptoms such as getting extremely short of breath just from sitting up in bed, inflammation of my sinuses that were so bad my ears were clogged for an entire MONTH (and not relieved at all by Claritin and Sudafed), continuous low-grade fever that occasionally rose to 103-4, extreme burning pain in my lower legs and ankles due to blood coagulation, and 5 days before my admission, I began vomiting and couldn’t even keep water down. The first thing they gave me at the hospital was Zofran, an anti-emetic, just so I could keep other medicines down.
Two weeks later I’m finally feeling better, I’ve been out of the hospital for a week now. But I remain in isolation at home until Sunday, which will be 28 days since I got severely ill (my doctors told me 14 days isn’t enough, some people are still shedding only two weeks in). I was a participant in a trial study for the antiviral Remdesivor (not approved by the FDA); it literally “killed” the Covid all over my body (had a CT scan at the hospital)-but one of the “symptoms” of the viral
shedding is that my mucus And phlegm are tinged with blood. It gets less tinged every day but I still occasionally have some still.
It was the most horrifying experience of my life, and I’m now back in therapy just so I don’t end up getting PTSD. I also cannot return to work (I’ve been a massage therapist for five years now) until September at the earliest. It’s literally not safe for either me or my clients, and I also lost 10lbs and all of my muscle
Tone, and I was already very slim.
I’m 39 years old and have NO underlying health conditions. My blood was tested every day at the hospital and except for a white blood cell count the first few days-ALL of my bloodwork came out perfect every single time. My doctors actually said “perfect”.
So please-take this virus seriously, stay safe, and don’t believe the conservatives and conspiracy theorists who say Covid “is a hoax”/“just a flu”/“you’ll be fine unless you’re really old or have underlying health problems”. They have NO clue about how devastating and downright evil this virus is. I actually thought I was going to die in that hospital, with no loved ones allowed by my side. PLEASE stay safe!!!!!

Sounds horrific. I’m glad you’re okay. Someone in my bodybuilding group was like only 98% of people die. First of all that’s a lot compared to 0.01 that die from the flu- every death is a person. Secondly, being intubatated is a huge deal! Just cause you survive doesn’t mean it’s not something to take seriously.
I bought myself an O2 monitor. I still get triggered when I get short of breath because I’ve had pneumonia and almost died from it. It’s an awful horrible experience. I totally feel you on PSTD from being intubatated. OMG. I guess the nurses had to hold me down cause I kept trying to pull the tube out. Awful.
I would suggest everyone have a hospital bag just in case you get admitted. Things like a coloring book, a favorite stuff animal, underwear, socks, extra phone charger, and written important numbers just in case your phone breaks or gets lost. I had temporary memory loss too, so having important things written out vs on a phone helps. Have a safety plan if worst comes to worse. Also, have bills automatically debted because the last thing you want to do is come home to an eviction notice. At least pay bills as far as head as possible cause you won’t be able to deal with it when you are admitted to the hospital.

This attitude is the reason why the US has over 120,000 deaths, more than any other country, and why we're still seeing the number of cases increasing in about half the states, while it's plummeting in other western countries. The US has over 18,000 new cases. Italy has 224, Spain 334, and France has 284.
https://www.worldometers.info/coronavirus/
no the reason is the US is the size of most of Europe as a whole with 331 million plus people and even using 130k deaths the percentage is still 0.000392 % death rate.
dont forget that 90% of these new cases are non symptomatic, and 50% of all positives tests have proven to be false positives. now if we had 18000 new cases and 18000 new deaths, then you would have a leg to stand on, otherwise the normal flu kills more, Covid isnt even in the top 20

I agree being fearful and stressed suppresses the immune system, so it’s best to hope for the best and prepare for the worst. It’s like playing russian roulette. Be safe. Speaking of general knowledge falling miserably, that's not how percentages work. Otherwise, 331 million out of 331 million is 1%.

Not surprisingly you missed the point.
Let's say there are 2 people, and 1 dies.
1/2 = 0.5
The death rate is 0.5%?
No, 1 out of 2 is 50%. Percentages are quotients multiplied by 100. It's literally in the word "percent," from "per cent," or "by the hundred."
If you don't grasp this, that's all right, but don't bother replying.

Are you joking? or just don't understand the concept?
Death rate= Death cases/confirmed cases
Death per capital ratio= Death cases/total population

Most of the "new cases " are A. people that test positive and B. most of them are 44 and younger. Most of the new cases are NOT resulting in hospitalization.
A lot of the people being hospitalized are there for reasons other than Covid. A LOT of these "new cases " involve people with NO SYMPTOMS. They tested positive for the virus or the anti-bodies or both but did not get sick. BUT they can still infect other people.
Part of the problem is the inconsistent reporting and sloppy nomenclature. The states are reporting different things in different ways. A positive test is now a "case" of Covid , regardless of anything else. The bottom line is that when you dig into the data the two stats having the most meaning ( and arguably the most cause for alarm ) are 1. hospitalizations for Covid and 2. the death rate from Covid. Neither is at an alarming level. YET. If you exclude the elderly and those with co-morbidities like diabetes , obesity , heart and lung problems then the actual death rate from Covid is 0.005 %. Still a serious illness that ought to be taken seriously.
Some states that have reopened have NOT seen an explosion of new cases and most of those that have still have manageable rates of hospitalization. Most of the new cases are concentrated in younger people who are not socially distancing or masking up. The problem is some are "super-spreaders " where they infect as many as 20 other people. We just had one in Rockland County where a party host was not feeling well and infected most of the attendees at her/his barbecue. One person infected at least 20 other people; maybe more.

Yes they are. It's not just new cases that are increasing, but so are deaths and hospitalizations. In Texas, the number of hospitalizations has quadrupled since Memorial Day. Hospitals in Houston are being overwhelmed.

Florida has gone from 20 - 30 deaths a day, to over 60.
Reopening has been a disaster, and it's going to continue to get worse, especially if states don't take the right measures to stop this.

I have no idea of where you get your information, but you're way off. According to the CDC, there were 24,000 – 62,000 flu deaths from October 1, 2019, through April 4, 2020.
https://www.cdc.gov/flu/about/burden/preliminary-in-season-estimates.htm
There have been more than 130,000 deaths caused by COVID-19 over the past 3 1/2 months. It's not even close.
It seems that the ones who are most opposed to taking the appropriate measures against the virus, such as sheltering at home, social distancing, and wearing a mask; are also the ones who are the least informed, or most misinformed.

That is one city in one state. There are hot spots but the data is clear : if you are young and healthy you will NOT die from Covid. We agree ( I think ) that social distancing and wearing a mask ought to be de riguer.
Over half the total U.S. Covid deaths were among the elderly and infirm. Cuomo and Murphy let Covid loose in N.J and N.Y. nursing homes. DeSantis and Abbott did far more to protect the elderly in Florida and Texas. As has been noted, the Swedes couldn't make up their minds what to do.
Florida has something like 3,000 total Covid deaths. New York has over 25,000 with a lower population. N.J. has far more deaths than Florida and Texas.

I honestly think the virus continues to spread because while business are closing to prevent people congregating in large groups, they’re still congregating at private parties, memorial weekend parties, Pool parties, and now Fourth of July parties.
Add to this asymptomatic people unknowingly spreading their pathogens
Ive had family tell me “oh there’s no virus here, come on over!” Like bish! Unless I see a fresh Covid test Im gonna politely decline. I feel bad declining invites but eh....better safe than sorry
