Australia has done a great job in preventing the spread of the virus, but a poor job in vaccinating people against it.
The optimal solution would be for all public places to require proof of vaccination, in order to enter the premise.

^i think the problem with that is vaccine status does not equal health status.
People are getting a false sense of security with the vaccine.
Yes it’s helpful for most.
However there are many cases of vaccinated people having covid.
I personally think continuing health practices that prevent spread of diseases (sanitizing, social distancing, etc) are also helpful.

Here’s a really good article to explain the nuances of being fully vaccinated.
https://www.google.com/amp/s/www.nytimes.com/2021/08/03/well/live/covid-delta-variant-vaccine-symptoms.amp.html
Thanks for sharing. From your article:
The good news is the current crop of vaccines available in the United States are doing a remarkable job of protecting people from serious illness, hospitalization and death. More than 97 percent of those hospitalized with Covid-19 are unvaccinated. And new data from Singapore shows that even when vaccinated patients are hospitalized with Delta breakthrough infections, they are far less likely to need supplemental oxygen, and they clear the virus faster compared with unvaccinated patients.
Breakthrough infections make headlines, but they remain uncommon. Although the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention stopped tracking all breakthrough cases in May, about half of all states report at least some data on breakthrough events. The Kaiser Family Foundation recently analyzed much of the state-reported data and found that breakthrough cases, hospitalizations and deaths are extremely rare events among those who are fully vaccinated against Covid-19. The rate of breakthrough cases reported among those fully vaccinated is “well below 1 percent in all reporting states, ranging from 0.01 percent in Connecticut to 0.29 percent in Alaska,” according to the Kaiser analysis.

I don't have a problem with your "optimal solution ".
Australia has been draconian in its lockdowns. They also do not have a wide open border over which thousands of infected people have been coming in.

Jesus CDC! Pick a side! First you throw caution to the wind, and now you want us to proceed with an abundance of caution! The Director needs to resign!
So apparently the risk of spreading the “new” virus and getting infected with the delta is really low if your vaccinated. If you get infected the chance of get long COVID is extremely low-if you’re vaccinated.
The headlines in the news made me think I was gonna die-fear mongering. Respect the virus, get vaccinated, wear a mask and social distance as much as possible.
They are working on “booster” shots. The new MRNA vaccine can be made very easily updated because they don’t require a vector-they use chicken eggs for traditional vaccines to multiply the virus before “killing” inactivating the live virus. This should be just like the flu shot. I think next year as long as people get vaccinated we should be able to live with this virus.

Here is a serious question - the latest research from Israel says that if you have had Covid your immunity is 6 to 7 times better than that created by being vaccinated. If you have already had Covid, should you get vaccinated ? I thought it wouldn't hurt but now I am back to undecided.
The other hot topics are vaccinating children ( I'm admittedly undecided ) and mandating that they wear masks. Since the latest studies call into question the efficacy of wearing masks and I think it is preferable that the teachers take one for the team ( for once ) and get vaccinated I don't think we ought to compel mask usage for children. I admit I have been wishy washy and wavered back and forth on these issues. If there is a definitive study that shows that masks actually work ( and so far there is NOT ) I might change my mind.

Just my own experience but I had covid last year and keep getting exposed and testing negative. Like kissing, sharing a bed, traveling together sharing drinks, crowded music festivals kind of exposure lol. I didn't think much of it until this past month or so when cases exploded and I knew so many people who came down with it. I actually do plan on getting vaccinated just haven't gotten around to it and since I had covid and it was so mild I didn't really care about the possibility of getting it again but yeah, my natural immunity has definitely saved me so far.

I don't know of anyone in the medical community or scientific community saying people who have had covid, shouldn't get vaccinated. Please don't give out medical advice that you're not qualified to give. It's not a question of whether you're more immune from being vaccinated or getting the virus. The question is whether you're more immune from having the virus and getting vaccinated, or just having the virus. I think it's very unlikely that people who have had the virus are more immune than people who have had the virus and have been vaccinated as well. If anyone who had the virus has any concerns about getting vaccinated, he or she should consult with his or her doctor.
Masks have been proven effective. Tests have shown that multi-layer polymer masks are very effective at preventing the virus from spreading. Again, please stop giving medical advice that you're not qualified to give. It's not just teachers who are at risk from covid. Children are at risk as well, and children under the age of twelve cannot be vaccinated. Pediatric hospitals in FL are being overwhelmed with young patients battling covid.

I NEVER said that people who have had Covid should not get vaccinated. I DID say that questions have been raised as to the necessity of doing so.
Personally I would want the extra protection of the vaccine even if I had t-cells and Covid antibodies. I fail to see how raising questions and citing the work of MEDICAL DOCTORS who work and do research at such places as Harvard , Yale, Johns Hopkins etc. is somehow "giving medical advice ". Nobody who reads anything on this board should rely on it for anything except to do their own research and ask their own questions before making their own decisions.
There is a grand total of one ( 1) retrospective study as to the the effectiveness of masks on children and it was inconclusive. Dr. Marty Makary of Johns Hopkins and Dr. H. Cody Meissner of Tufts have critiqued the latest decree from the CDC that children should be compelled to wear masks. They list a number of harms to some children from long term mask usage and see little benefit. Cloth masks collect and carry Covid.
While NOT definitive there was a Danish study last year. 6000 participants. Approximately 3000 wore masks outside their homes ; approximately 3000 did not. The infection rate for the mask group was 1.8%. for the maskless it was 2.1%
We are going to see. New Jersey has mandated masks in its schools. Florida has prohibited mask mandates. Some people believe that we should have locked down harder and longer while masking more. Australia which imposed the most draconian lockdowns and mandates is now in its SIXTH lockdown. When DeSantis reopened Florida's beaches we were told by the mainstream media and Fauci and his nattering nannies that mass death would follow. It didn't. When they reopened their schools in the fall of 2020 we were told they should stock up on body bags . The mass deaths did not happen. Then they trotted out the canard that Florida was not vaccinating. Florida is currently 23rd in vaccination rate and DeSantis has gone around the state telling people to get vaccinated. New York and New Jersey have consistently toed the CDC line and have had the highest death rates in the country.
The fact remains that our current vaccines have about a 10% failure rate i.e. vaccinated people get infected anyway.
Even with the current surge , for the most part our hospitals are not overwhelmed. We have plenty of ICU capacity and early treatment is keeping most Covid patients out of the ICUs.

I doubt that. The Covid death rate in the U.S. for those under 25 is about 1 in a million. That is deaths WITH Covid. It is less than the seasonal flu.
Right now there are only about 200 people under 17 in the hospital with Covid.
In the whole state of California there were only 23 deaths from Covid for those under 17 as of July 21, 2021 according to the CDC.

I was told some months ago that you shouldn't get your vaccine card laminated, because it may need to be updated when they come out with the booster shot. But I guess they can just give you a second card when the time comes? You'll just have to carry around both cards...for when you're in a situation where they've gotta "check your vaccine cards" in order for you to do this and that.

I don't feel like looking it up right now, but there's also a website to get a replacement card.
But my point was that it's best to not get the first one laminated in the first place. The woman at Walgreens Pharmacy told me this, because at the time there was talk about the booster shot coming soon. I'd rather just have to carry ONE vaccine card, and have all my shots listed on there.
I went and bought these lanyards with badge holders on them (Because I knew that eventually places were gonna start checking for people's vaccine cards), and then realized the vaccine card is too big to fit in the badge holder. And before anyone suggests it...no, I'm not going to just trim my vaccine card with scissors to make it fit. Lol.
If you ever have to submit a clear photo of your vaccine card online (Like my son had to do recently for his college/university on their website), the iPhone 'Notes' app is really great. Click the little camera icon on the bottom, and click 'Scan Documents'. Great alternative to using a typical scanner.

The numbers are not clear cut. We do know that in the 2019-2020 Flu season , 199 children died. But the CDC says that their estimate is that it is really 434.
As of August 4, 2021 the CDC says that 349 American children 17 and under have died FROM Covid. That's as reported by CNS and NPR. The CDC does NOT say a word about co-morbidities i.e. how many were obese , diabetic , were on chemo or had leukemia. Forbes has reported 520 as the number of Covid deaths in those 17 or under.
The Flu season lasts for about 6 months and the CDC says 434 children died. We have been fighting Covid for about 20 months ( 3 times as long ) and somewhere between 349 and 520 children have died from Covid. Based on those numbers alone , the flu is clearly far more dangerous for children than Covid.
Despite the increase in reported "cases" among those 21 and under , the death rates and ICU rates for young patients remain low. Yes, there are a few hospitals where their pediatric ICU's are now full. The nationwide numbers for death and hospitalization remain relatively low for younger patients. All the CDC has done is report rate of infection. To be counted in their numbers means you tested positive for Covid . Period. Almost all have no or mild symptoms. What the CDC has not reported is how many of those Covid positive "yoots" are under active treatment. Most of those younger patients who are hospitalized are treated and released. That's right. They are NOT admitted. They are seen in the ER and sent home. Those who are hospitalized for treatment, and that number has gone up over the past few weeks, for the most part are not being put into ICU's. And once again nobody seems to be bothering to note co-morbidities for either the hospitalized or those sick enough to require being put in an ICU. Why not ? I'm tempted to say that Fauci and the CDC want the Covid numbers to be as high as possible. All the numbers. Positive tests; E.R. visits ; hospitalized ; ICU stays etc. but who knows ?
How many of these younger patients were vaccinated against Covid ? Nobody seems to know. If someone is keeping track they haven't posted the numbers. How many are being vaccinated in the hospital ? Nobody seems to know.

They should but I wouldn't want to bet on it. I think it is better to rely on your card than local record keeping.
Btw, I heard Dr. Drew Pinsky interviewed last night and he made the observation that echoes what other doctors have been saying. Covid is the FIRST epidemic in history where we quarantined the healthy. With past epidemics we isolated the sick and the vulnerable. That's how it started with Covid before we had the "Bend The Curve" Shutdowns starting in March , 2020.
Early on New York, New Jersey, Michigan and one or two other states ordered Covid patients be put back in nursing homes. Some 15,000 elderly patients died in New York alone during the approximately two months the policy was in effect before Cuomo repealed it. After the fact we were told it was to keep hospital beds open. Now it looks like it was something more nefarious involving Medicare that benefitted Cuomo's amjor contributors. Florida did not follow that policy and its death numbers among the elderly in general and nursing homes in particular were much lower. If Cuomo is prosecuted for anything it should be for deliberately underreporting nursing home deaths by not counting those who died in hospitals.

It's not. On the influenza epidemic of 1918:

Now as then, public health interventions are the first line of defense against an epidemic in the absence of a vaccine. These measures include closing schools, shops, and restaurants; placing restrictions on transportation; mandating social distancing, and banning public gatherings. (This is how small groups can save lives during a pandemic.)
Of course, getting citizens to comply with such orders is another story: In 1918, a San Francisco health officer shot three people when one refused to wear a mandatory face mask. In Arizona, police handed out $10 fines for those caught without the protective gear. But eventually, the most drastic and sweeping measures paid off. After implementing a multitude of strict closures and controls on public gatherings, St. Louis, San Francisco, Milwaukee, and Kansas City responded fastest and most effectively: Interventions there were credited with cutting transmission rates by 30 to 50 percent. New York City, which reacted earliest to the crisis with mandatory quarantines and staggered business hours, experienced the lowest death rate on the Eastern seaboard.

Also, from the above article:
Philadelphia detected its first case of a deadly, fast-spreading strain of influenza on September 17, 1918. The next day, in an attempt to halt the virus’ spread, city officials launched a campaign against coughing, spitting, and sneezing in public. Yet 10 days later—despite the prospect of an epidemic at its doorstep—the city hosted a parade that 200,000 people attended.
Flu cases continued to mount until finally, on October 3, schools, churches, theaters, and public gathering spaces were shut down. Just two weeks after the first reported case, there were at least 20,000 more.
These lockdowns aren't some new attempt for government to take control over people's lives. It's common sense, and has been going on for more than 100 years.

The rich and powerful are always seeking more power and control, but that doesn’t make covid any less of a legit threat to humanity. Covid is real and it’s really bad. The solution isn’t to fight each other it’s to fight the virus. The rich and powerful do take advantage of crisis to further their own interest and they use fear to pit us against each other. We need to fight the virus instead of fighting each other.

YOU are the last person to accuse anyone else of trying to be "political". You are the first one to reach for the politics jar.
Since the Spanish Flu and its draconian measures the Covid crisis is the first time we quarantined the healthy. And the authorities were not wrong back in 1918 and 1919. The weird thing about the Spanish Flu was that it attacked and killed the young and healthy more than older people. Among our military there were more victims among the young and healthy farm boys than among the guys from the cities and slums. It was THEORIZED then and now that the City dwellers had built up their immune systems by exposure to a host of diseases while rural folks had far less exposure. The corollary theory was that the city dwellers were proven survivors of diseases. Guys in NYC grew up swimming in the Hudson and East Rivers; Boston guys in Boston Harbor ; Chicago guys in the Chicago River; Cleveland the Cuyahoga etc. etc.
Mississippi's health system is being challenged but so far it is hanging on. Florida has been able to hold up. So far. We will see.
Btw, with these latest increases in Covid infections coupled with an extensive PSA campaign , what has happened with Vaccination rates ? Are more people getting vaccinated ? Here in NYC more and more businesses are requiring proof of vaccination for entry. I have no problem with that and other encouragements to get vaccinated. I'm still leaning against requiring kids to wear masks.

Sturgis Rally going on right now. Seven hundred thousand bikers without masks, should be interesting to see what the resulting infection rate will be.

I've never been to Sturgis. Rather have my teeth drilled lol. But from photos and footage it looks like a lot of the activity is outdoors. Yes, yes, I'm sure they hit the bars too. We will see if it amounts to a "superspreader " event or not.

Israel’s sobering setback
Israel, which has led the world in launching vaccinations and in data gathering, is confronting a surge of COVID-19 cases that officials expect to push hospitals to the brink. Nearly 60% of gravely ill patients are fully vaccinated

Looks like masking and social distancing will be the norm for some time until Covid mutates to a less virulent form and the whole population has some immunity

Interesting, but hard to track since peeps come from everywhere then disperse.
Sturgis is a bucket list, but a long ride from East Coast, I did visit Laconia, NH Bike Week, saw a very high density of Trump, and anti-mask T-shirts. Other thing that stuck out was the number of folks that trailered their far out creations just so they could park it there.

I just scheduled a Third shot ( Moderna ) for November.
Does anyone know if vaccination rates have been going up since July ?
Do not panic over the Israeli data. If you read and look , something like 87% of the breakthrough infections are in those 60 and older. They were the ones who got vaccinated first. Obviously the protection from vaccines wanes over time. This is not unusual. Viruses mutate. Vaccines often need to be repeated.
Most "cases" are NOT being hospitalized. Of those hospitalized most are NOT going into the ICU. The article does not say anything about deaths among the vaccinated. Plus Israel is on the cutting edge of Covid treatment.

^^^fair enough. People can still get long covid after being vaccinated. I wish people would start paying attention. It’s not all about hospitalizations and death.
I mean if we can’t get sterilizing immunity I’m not sure what to do? We hope the virus become less virulent and we learn to accept a certain amount of death and disability? We can’t mask up and social distance forever? We do need to get the level of virus down though. I personally can adapt to masking as a norm-I’m pretty adaptable. They say it could be 2025 before we’re at the end of this.

Public Schools have barely been open n already a plethora of outbreaks
Mississippi, Louisiana, Georgia n more
Mississippi for starters has the most idiotic governor. I traveled there once recently (last year during the height of pandemic) and NO ONE I mean no one who resides there wears masks n they look at you like an alien if you are wearing one.
Not surprised those jokers catching corona……stay in denial of ya want to……

Several school districts in Texas have sought to require masks amid an increase in Covid-19 cases. Gov. Greg Abbott has tried to ban mask mandates.
A small Texas school district has made facial coverings part of its dress code, in a bid to get around Gov. Greg Abbott's executive order banning mask mandates.

Here's the problem. Everybody has just ASSUMED that masks work and that mandating masks helps prevent the spread of Covid. To date there has not been a single definitive controlled study showing that masks work. ( YES EAGLE there are a few countries that had widespread mask usage and low infection rates BUT they ALL have other factors that could also account for their low numbers. Especially on death rates. ) There are studies showing that mask mandates have SOME negative effects on SOME children. The related problem is that those complaining about mask mandates also complain about vaccine mandates and testing. They can't have it both ways. We KNOW vaccines work. We KNOW Covid positive people should stay home ALONE for at least 10 days; 14 would be best. We've been doing quarantining on the honor system. If Chris Cuomo broke quarantine in the Hamptons then how many other Covid positive people did and are doing likewise ?
New Zealand just went into another national shutdown over 1 , ONE ! new reported case of Covid. Australia is in its 6th shutdown and both countries are actively enforcing their regulations with fines for the slightest violation. China chained and locked people in their homes. THAT is extreme stuff. Requiring vaccination or weekly testing is breathtakingly mild in comparison.
It is no secret that I don't like or trust government. But there is no need to get ridiculous. People should get vaccinated and if they don't want Junior to have to wear a mask then get him tested and if old enough, vaccinated.
I am fully vaxxed and I have gone back to wearing an N-95 mask in indoor settings. Does it work ? Will it protect me ? I don't know but afaic it couldn't hurt.
I am trying to post this as delicately and apolitically as I can but can anyone tell me that there is no connection between our recent surges in Covid cases and our Southern Border ? We've had at least 2 million UNMASKED , mostly unvaccinated people come in since late January who were then sent all over the country. Someone, ANYONE ! genuinely concerned about Covid please tell me WHY we do not close our Southern Border ? Or at least test , vaccinate and quarantine those coming in ?

^A mask works better than nothing
I’d rather people coming in my space wear mask than cough without covering their nasty mouth or wear a mask vs spit over my food while talking.
And of course you’re not going to go into a covid unit with a flimsy paper mask. N95 offers the best protection.

I have NEVER said that good masks do not work. They do. But it has not been scientifically PROVEN that mask mandates prevent Covid. Maybe they do. Maybe they just help.
Vaccines have been PROVEN to work. At a minimum they moderate the infection.

Mississippi's health system is being challenged but so far it is hanging on. Florida has been able to hold up. So far. We will see.
There are now no ICU beds available in Alabama hospitals.

I would bet that some of the other southern states aren't far behind.
