Melonie, the only time they report the transaction is if its over 10,000 and you pay cash and here in my state nothing id reported to feds when you buy a car.no title change or whatever you are talking about.

I forgot, its not just at car dealers they report it,anything you purchase over 10,000 that you pay cash for or they want to see its been in bank account for at least 6 months to a year. Also if you came to the bank and wanted to put 10,000 in your account they fill out a form, but if its 9999 they dont, its very tricky and confusing the things they do.

Ok girls, I've been thinking about it and I must confess I'm a sucker for big BIG trucks just like Bella. My dream truck is a Dodge Ram 3500 with a 7 inch lift and some 44 swamp boggers. [love] After seeing all the nice cars you girls have, I'm thinking about getting me something nice. :P But maybe I'll start at the bottom and work my way up. It would be nice to have that truck though. My ex-boyfriend and my brother would shit their pants lol. ;D

I drive a 2002 BMW X5.
It cost a lot, but my dancing money is total spending cash since my husband's job pays all of our bills and living expenses. I use my dancing money to go crazy on all of the fun stuff. :)

Michele, if you're talking about New York, I can guarantee you that the NYSDMV reports every single title change to the feds. I assume that this is also done by the other 39 states which have also entered into a joint enforcement agreement with the IRS. Maybe you live in one of the 10 states that didn't sign the agreement (those 10 states don't have a state income tax).

And yes the federal cash transaction reporting threshold is $10,000 ... a threshold which will be easily exceeded by the cash purchase of most of the used vehicles we've been discussing. If the vehicle is purchased by an auto loan instead of cash, that will also be reported by the financial institution writing the loan even if the down payment is less than $10,000 (although no cash transaction report will be created since the amount of cash changing hands will be below the threshold).

Also, the NY State Tax Dep't has instituted it's own state reporting requirement threshold of $1,000 which applies to money order purchases and certain other retail transactions - which is also shared with the feds due to the joint enforcement agreement.

Melonie,so every person in NY who pays 1000 or writes a check for something totalling that they have to fill out a form, thats ridiculous,in NY it wouldnt be hard to spend that on a couple of items, seems like a lot of work, also when I sold bought and sold vehicles when someone purchased one of my vehicles,no title change was reporting, florida is indeed a ni income tax state, but I dont see the opint in reporting title changes, its not alerting anyone of anything because most people dont pay cash for 15-30,000 vehicles,so really its only telling them what you purchased ,whats the point?

I have never bothered to buy a car since I moved down here, pretty much everything is in walking distance. I really don't need a car. I bought an electric scooter for daytime when I want to go a little further, say to the post office and/or make a couple stops. http://www.superheltinne.com/Boreem.html -I have the yellow one - cute and fun to pooter around here on.

Guess my Benz will be going up for sale, not sure....

But i just bought a 3000GT 2 months ago, over 10,000 out of savings, nothing gets reported. However if you deposit 10,000 or more, it does get reported to the feds.

I have been there, so i use multiple banks at different time to deposit monies.

Pamela,no when you pay 10,000 or more cash for something it does get reported,a form is filled out and reporting at several different banks doent help either because, both or all still report everything in their, unless its an interest free account.

Michele, I didn't mention writing checks - but for a fact any person in NY who spends $1000 cash buying money orders will be reported to the NY State Tax dep't. This includes the US Post Office as well as banks and retail stores. However, a record of all checks written is already available to the IRS and State Tax Dep't if they wish to look at it - along with every other bank or credit card transaction !

As to the point of State Motor Vehicle agencies (not individual dealers or sellers) reporting title changes on vehicles (and along with them the type of vehicle and it's book value) is that certain states tax people's assets instead of their income. Since there are states like Texas in the 40 state consortium who do base the amount of their state taxes on the value of a person's home, car, boat, etc. rather than on their income, all 40 member states of the consortium must report such items so that this info is available in the 40 state database. I'll grant you that individual private sellers of cars are most likely not generating cash transaction reports, although all licensed dealers are required to. But with the title change being reported through the state motor vehicle dep't the IRS winds up being informed anyhow, either as an outright purchase based on the title being issued in the name of an individual, or as an auto loan with the title being issued in the name of a financial institution, regardless of whether a bank or car dealer also reported any cash transactions.

Of course the underlying point is to allow IRS computers to piece together a financial scenario for every taxpayer which compares the amounts being claimed as earnings with the amount they are actually spending on big ticket items plus investments plus savings plus cost of living. If a big gap emerges, i.e. a reported income of $35,000 but a new car title transfer with a blue book value of $40,000 plus $10,000 in new securities purchases plus a $5,000 bank balance increase plus a $20,000 area cost of living estimate, an audit is very likely to follow.

I presume that the true reason for this 40 state tax co-operation consortium is to help states with serious budget deficits collect as much tax as possible. Here's how this might be of personal interest to you - who actually resides in Florida? but who sometimes works in upscale Manhattan clubs. New York City has a per diem income tax which applies to everybody that works within the city limits. This law allows NYC to tax Florida Marlins players for the income they received playing games in Yankee Stadium! This law similarly allows NYC to tax out of state dancers who have received income from Manhattan clubs. This could make for some very interesting developments after next April 15th.

I get no interest in my banking around here. I move savings from checking alot. I cut a check. Been doing this for many many years, and it's all good. I do have several banking accounts, with a couple gaining "some" interest. So far so good!!!!

Anything you put your money into is an investment, especially when you pay a large chunk of money for something, its called an investment, its something you invest your hard earned cash into, basically what I was saying is if you buy a car for say 25,000,drive it off the lot it depreciates 20 percent, you finance said vehicle at 9 % for five years you end up payingalmost 28,000 for the vehicle, keep it 5 years sell it for 7,000,Id say that was a bad investment, when you could have just payed 6,000 cash for a car and drove it for a few years and you still could probably sell it for 2-3000,Iwould much rather take the 30,000 invest it and in five years havemaybe 40,000,I guess not everyone thinks in terms of dollars like I do,I always look for ways to maxamize my earnings not loose them.

Hence the reason I like my little moped motorcycle ;D
It is an inexpensive way for me to travel which is cheaper and faster than the local bus service. I am not planning on buying my first car until I can easily afford the payments with passive income not earned income.

The only times I can't ride her is in very windy conditions (did once and nearly got blown off her... came back home a nervous wreck). I've ridden her in heavy rain without too much of a problem... however ;D where I am mostly has sun and good weather over bad weather.

Did anyone ever see that old Saturday Night Live "commercial" for the "Adobe?" It was a car that was made out of this brown clay. It showed people getting out of the car and the clay was all over their clothes. If you got into an accident, you could just mold your car into place again. The Adobe would be a great car for drivers like myself. ;D

I drive a 97 Sunfire. After I buy a home and save up the money to pay cash for a car, I think I want to get a 2000, 2001 Honda something or other. For now the Sunfire is comfy.
I had to bring this thread back. I couldn't wait! I got a new car yesterday!

My sunfire was falling apart. I now have a 99 Honda Civic! It's beautiful and I love it!

Ok.. I started out with a '76 (yes, '76.. lol) Plymouth Volare. It was a very pukey green color, but it worked like a charm.. A little old lady owned it before I did, and it spent a lot of time in her garage, away from the elements. Got some good use out of it, but had to part with it.. lol.. I ended up donating it for Cancer research, and I got a '96 Ford Escort in May.

Damn this is an old thread resurrected. How many of you all who originally posted have the same car as you did in 2003? I sure don't. And yeah, cars are a bad investment BUT I still think they are worth it. If I have to spend a lot of time driving around I'd rather do it in a nice car than a shitty one. So to me it's worth it. But I've always been a car person.

How many of you all who originally posted have the same car as you did in 2003? I sure don't

me either ... although my plans changed from my 2003 drooling over an Audi TT.

I wound up buying a red 2004 Subaru WRX to get the 4 wheel drive at a much lower cost than the Audi. Once I had the WRX for a while though, I found that while it is extremely fun to drive, great on fuel economy, and OK for reasonably short trips (the sport suspension is wicked stiff), that it wasn't so great after riding in it for 6 or 8 or 10 hours. I also discovered that the WRX tends to draw quite a bit of 'unwanted' attention, both from cops and in parking lots.

So I kept the WRX for local and 'fun' driving, and also just bought a 2005 white Subaru Legacy, which is roomier, rides better, is more 'luxurious', draws very little attention from cops, and is a lot more comfortable (in more ways than one) for road trips and grocery shopping. And it still has 4 wheel drive and gets almost 30mpg on long Interstate trips.

Just got a 2003 (the last year they made them) Acura 3.2 CL type-S... I compared it to the BMWs and it was such a better quality buy b/c it basically falls above their 3 series but was still less expensive than the 5 series, with just as much horsepower and great handling! I also have a bike (2001 Yamaha R6!)
