If you want an intake of carbs, go natural with green veg. Skip all 'manmade' carbs such as pasta, chips, bread etc and AVOID ANYTHING WITH WHITE FLOUR!!!
Yo, that's true. And is you want sugars, take it natural, i.e. in the form of fruit. No raw'n'refined stuff. It's not good. I've managed to skip sweeties too (miracle!) and I'm using all this advice as well because I have a photo shoot soon and want to look fly!! I'm also ordering a workout vid from ebay so I can do my stuff in the privacy of my room.
So cheers for the tips lads'n'ladies!! :)

People--soy is not poison--why i did not find this prior to ryans departure?? SOY IS GOOD, yes some may have allergies to it (just like anything else)...Japanese eat lots of soy, fish and maitain a 2,000 or lower calorie diet...alot of them smoke and still live longer, healthier lives!!! PLEASE do not think soy is evil, it helps with menstral cramps, heart health menopause...ect...i LOVE the SOY BEAN...not hydgronated soy oils...tofu, soybeans...and products made from.
Rejoice in the JOY of SOY! ;D

I love the Body for life...I went from a size 8 to a size 4. If you don't follow the weight/cardio program, then you will need to alter the eating. As for the carbs...you may still ne eating a little more than is recommended. Just a thought...but in the end...different things work for different people!

How I lost 20 pounds in 3 months - I ate nothing but celery and carrot sticks and worked out the first month but had to stop afterwards because I didn't have the energy. Of course, the weight came back. The moral of this story is, there is no quick way to lose that much weight :crying:
Cut back on calories a bit and do cardio and lift weights... you'll look better too because you won't just be skinny, you'll be toned

I lost 30 pounds in three months following the Paleo Diet (http://www.thepaleodiet.com/). The first 8 or 9 pounds (mostly water weight) came off in the first week.
In a nutshell:
Cut out all sugars and starches, including bread, rice, pasta, cereal, and potatoes.
Eat a lot of vegetables and fruits, especially the fiberous ones (e.g., berries are better than bananas).
Eat good quality animal protein: avoid grain-fed beef, but fish (especially fatty fish like salmon) and wild game (buffalo, elk, venison, ostrich, rabbit) are terrific. Eggs are fine, but get the ones from cage-free chickens (higher in Omega-3 fats, lower in saturated fats).
Eat nuts (preferably raw and unsalted -- note that peanuts are not nuts, but legumes).
If you want to be really strict, cut out all dairy and legumes. (Legumes are mainly beans and peas.)

All of this is so helpful and inspiring too. I see little peices of information in many posts that will help me. Personally, I think i am going to follow Kobi's advice the closest -it looks like it worked for her!

Not everybody needs to do more than 45 mins, no. But for someone who is overweight wanting to lose 20 lbs. of fat ASAP then they would have to work harder. Doing cardio twice a day would really jump start your metabolism. An hour of cardio is not unheard of, nor dangerous. Also, your intensity comes into play. Obviously if you are working out with lower intensity you can go longer, and should.
I would suggest interval training for someone wanting to lose weight fast. On Mon, Wed, Fri do cardio twice a day, one hour of low intensity in the morning and a half hour of moderate in the evening. On Tues, Thurs, Sat, do an hour of cardio at different intervals (5 min. high, 5 min. low etc.). On the days you weight lift, throw in some jumping jacks in between sets.
While pilates is good for lengthening and sculpting muscles, it will not help some one who is trying to lose 20 lbs. of fat ASAP. Time is better spent doing cardio.
Unfortunately, doing that much cardio DOES NOT mean that you will lose more weight. Studies have shown that anything over 40 minutes is just straight muscle burn. Also, if you have a good interval cardio program, then there is no need to go more than 40 minutes per day. It's the quality of the workout.
As for Pilates: It is most DEFINITELY essential in helping someone lose weight! Why? Because it is developing muscle strength and deep pranic breathing (oxygenating your body). The more lean muscle mass you have, the more effectively your body will burn fat...and the more oxygenated your body is, the more efficiently it will burn fat. So, Pilates IS good to do while losing weight. It is not the be all, end all...but it DOES have it's place (along with healthy diet, cardio/weight routine).
As for totallyamateur, working out does not mean taking 3 hours a day. Taking the stairs instead of the elevator. Parking at the far end of the parking lot. Get writers block? Instead of sitting down in front of the tv, just do crunches, squats, leg lifts, take a brisk walk around the block...or workout to a Pilates tape. If you really want to lose the weight (do it for YOU and not for anyone else) then you will make the time. I have a 15 month old, and I work from home full time, and I dance on the side. But, my health is important to me, so I workout every day...and when it wasn't so damn cold out, I would take me daughter out for walks with me.
There's so much you can do...don't limit yourself.
While pilates is good for lengthening and sculpting muscles, it will not help some one who is trying to lose 20 lbs. of fat ASAP. Time is better spent doing cardio.
I should rephrase myself. Pilates will help anyone trying to lose weight. Any extra movement will. What I was trying to say is that in the hour you spend doing Pilates, you can burn more calories doing cardio and build muscle faster lifting weights. I have nothing against Pilates, and I do Pilates from time to time. I just think for someone who is low on time and wants to lose 20 lbs. fast, weights and cardio will get her there faster.
I have also heard many personal trainers recommend cardio twice daily to friends and family really wanting to lose some weight (more than 5 or 10 lbs.). I also know that fitness competitors do this the last few weeks of training to lower their body fat. Thats why I recommended it. I have also done this when I used to do swimwear pagents the last week before the contests. It worked for me. As far as me losing any muscle from it, I will never know, but I sure didn't look like it. I would've actually liked that. I have read the same fact that you are stating in a fitness magazine VenusGoddess, but am not sure how much I believe in it, just because I am always reading things that contradict each other. Besides them saying "40 minutes of cardio" is very vague. Do they mean that every single person, not matter how big or small, and no matter what intensity of cardio, from slow walking to sprinting, will start burning muscle at 40 minutes? I agree that a person at healthy weight trying to lose a few or maintain doesn't need to do more than 30 mins - 1 hr of cardio in a day, depending on intensity. I still think that someone trying to lose a lot of weight quick would benefit from cardio twice daily.

As i mentioned in my previous post research shows that after 40mins of CONSISTANT cardio you begin to lose muscle mass also we are at our peak (fat burning) 20mins in to a cardio workout so that extra 15-20mins i don't think will make that much of a difference.
I do agree with Kobi about working out twice a day because i know of ppl who have done this and look great and i have heard that fitness competitors and celebrities do this also...... the difference with this is that it is split up in to 2 workout sessions, which is more beneficial then a 1 hour long workout.

I gave up pop, I now only drink water and tea- lemon no sugar! I eat 3 meals a day and if I have to I have some veggie's inbetween. So far I have lost 7lbs and it's been a week. Maybe it will work for you. Sometimes changing just a little can help alot :)
Giving up pop is great! It's all empty calories anyway. Once you give it up it will never taste good again. I gave it up 7 years ago.

kobi,
with regards to post #4...made me breathless just reading it. Man you need to be really disciplined. I have the same weight problem thing. I want to get into exotic dancing but i have weight to lose before....I go to the gym once a day and do an hour and a half of cardio and 200 crunches....i dont to weights as yet coz i need to lose the extra fat before gaining muscle...
Is that the diet you follow?

Kat82,
Start with the weights now. When you have more muscle on your body it helps with burning fat. No need to wait :)

Yes I agree with veronica.... Start using light weights because more muscle really does burn fat!
I agree with Veronika and Seraya. You don't need to lose fat before you put on muscle. Lifting wieghts will help you lose fat so much faster than just doing cardio.
Also, you don't need to do 200 crunches a day. If you are doing a crunch correctly, you should only be able to do 15-20 in a set. Remember that crunches will not make stomach fat go away. Cardio and diet will. Crunches and other ab exercises will strenghthen and define your abs. My favorite ab exercise is crunches on a swiss ball. I do about 5 sets of 15-20.
If you want to spend that much time doing cardio, it will benefit you more if you split it up into 2 sessions, morning and night. It will keep your metabolism high throughout the day. Don't do that much cardio on the days that you lift.

Kobi i was wondering what your fitness and diet regime is now? how do you maintain your figure? you have a really great bod!
Seraya.
Honestly I don't have to work as hard as I used to. I have pretty much got my body to were I want it to be except for things I can't change. I'll be the first to admit I have good genetics, meaning that I can easily make changes in my body, but before I ever worked out I was chunky. I have been working out hard for 4 years so now I just have to maintain. I don't lift as hard or as much because I don't want to gain any more muscle, especially on my legs. 2-3 days a week of light lifting. I don't have to do as much cardio as I used to either. About 30 minutes 3-5 times a week. I eat healthy, but I am not as strict as I used to be. Most of the advice I give is what I did myself to get my bodyfat down and to get my body where it is now. As I get older I know I'll have to start working out harder again. I consider myself pretty lucky because it's been easy for me to maintain.

Thank you so much all of you. You have been great help...Kobi, i will try and do the 2 session gym thing. its more a matter of motivation :)
The reason i stopped doing weight is coz i wasnt losing any weight and my instructor told that with weights you take longer to see results (on the scale) because of muscle growth or something like that.
Anyway, i am sipping on green tea instead of soda (i have decided to give it up as much as i can coz of cellulite amonst other things)....i will try and do this...once again THANK You all for your terribly helpful tips..

So does anyone do kick boxing here? I heard its an AWESOME work out
Veronika

I had a friend get her jaw shattered in a kick boxing *class*. :o I think at home with just you and the tape would be great.
Kat, I was thinking that maybe you should whip out a tape measure more instead of (or in addition to) the scale. Muscle is heavier than fat but you will see more results than just what you read as the number on the scale. In fact, certain parts of the body respond to weight training fairly quicly (arms, for instance) and that can be a huge motivating factor.

Have any of you tried the "Eat Right for Your Blood Type" diet? It is a diet for staying healthy, living longer, and achieving your ideal weight. It is backed up by science, research, and results. This diet makes the most sense to me... it isn't complicated and you don't need to starve yourself.
I just watched this Inside Edition video, which sums up the diet pretty well. Here is the link... http://www.dadamo.com/media/inside.htm There is also a Regis and Kathy Lee video.
I personally found that by just adding the "highly beneficial" foods, and getting rid of the "avoid" foods made me feel and look better. Here is the main website http://www.dadamo.com/

Actually, my Naturopath/MD went to Bastyr University with Dr. Dadamo and incorporated some of his theories into her practice. I had a huge improvement in lots of weird ailments I had and my few errant grey hairs (I got 'em at 16, bleah) went away. My night vision improved too. I still keep in mind the foods I'm supposed to eat or not eat when choosing my meals and I do feel pretty darn good.
One caveat, though: if you aren't a person into cooking all your own food, keeping to the main diet is really hard what with the "avoid" foods. Doing what you are doing, Jeanette, seems to be enough to reep the benefits.

I don't recommend any super-restrictive or unhealthy diets. I just tried one and lost 8 pounds in two weeks, but then I had a couple of bad days and binged like you would not believe. For three days straight it was like I was possessed by a sugar and fat demon. I have gained back 10 lbs. and I totally don't want to go to work
Exercise and healthy, controlled eating habits really work.
Go to the gym even when you don't want to
I am going to try the twice a day thing, sounds good.

RYAN, you seriously have no idea what you are talking about. Sometimes I wonder where you come up w/ this.
RYAN, you seriously have no idea what you are talking about. Sometimes I wonder where you come up w/ this.
Ya took the words straight out of my mouth. From all those veggies he's eating (and carrots from the look of it) he has turned into a walking beta carotene stick. Sheesh some people try to impose their diets and way of life on everyone. ::) He's gone though isnt he? lol
Anyway, to lose weight fast, which as mentioned a billion times before, its harsh on your body and then you may gain it back, with interest. ;) (Too bad bank accounts dont happen that way!)
Anyway I stick to low carb. I started Atkins a few months ago, did the restricted ketosis inducing thing for about 3 weeks and dropped a bunch of lbs, PLUS inches. Then I started to up my carbs enough to where I wont gain weight back. Now I can cheat every now and then, but I stick to low carbs, and not many white flours. These are the ones who make ya fat, fast.
Do your cardio, and hopefulyl your machine will have an option FAT BURN or CARDIO. (Note: when people say cardio, they mean doing the elliptical, treadmill, bike, etc) BUT theres a difference once you get on the machine. I usually do FAT BURN because this keeps your heart rate at a rate where in which you will burn fat and not muscle. If you press CARDIO, you up your heart rate PAST your fat burning point, and you begin to lose muscle. I see some people on the elliptical at the gym doing it so fast and I feel like saying, "Your not gonna get thinner doing that, only less muscle, which I am sure is not what you want'
Remember, someone posted about the people who are "SKINNY FAT". They are thin, like 100 lbs, or whatever, yet they have no muscle and even have cellulite. This happens to people who burn their muscle, instead of fat.
By doing cardio in a FAT BURN mode, you burn fat.
Hope this wasnt confusing. :)
Pm me if you need me to decipher this hahah

Hey I just found this diet called the 90/10 diet. It gives you meals and stuff to eat (which are healthy) and allows you to have one "fun food" a day. It is working for me. I've been able to eat a little of what I would normally feel deprived of and healthy. I have enough willpower as well.
i am crazy, i love it !
I would HATE being just like everyone else!

I started watching out for "the 3 whites":
-flour, -sugar, -salt;
and decreasing my intake of them, while eating much more fish and drinking more water and have lost 9lbs in 2 weeks!
be careful eating fish, all of our chemicals eventually end up in the ocean, and ultimatly in the fish. Fish have extremely high levels of lead, arsenic and mercury. It's great that you are losing weight, but PLEASE be careful with fish. Fish USED to be the "perfect" food, high in protien, low in fat, high in DHA, an high in omega 3, low in chlosterol. Now fish are accumulating many toxins from the ocean water and now are very toxic to eat. Mercury is a poison that is extremely difficult to remove from the human body, and is very prevelant in all ocean creatures. Please be careful.
