Bacterial vaginosis (BV) is caused by an imbalance of the organisms (flora) that naturally exist in the vagina. Normally, about 95% of vaginal flora are lactobacillus bacteria. Lactobacilli help keep the vaginal pH level low and prevent overgrowth of other types of organisms. Women with BV have fewer lactobacillus organisms than normal and more of other types of bacteria. Experts do not yet understand what causes this imbalance.Factors that increase your risk of developing bacterial vaginosis include:
Starting sexual activity at a young age.
Having a history of sexually transmitted disease (STD).
Having multiple sexual partners.
Having a female sexual partner.8
Using an intrauterine device (IUD).
Using tampons or a diaphragm.
Douching.
Oral-to-genital sexual activity.
Although bacterial vaginosis seems to be triggered or worsened by sexual activity, it is not an infection that is passed from person to person. Therefore, experts do not consider bacterial vaginosis to be a sexually transmitted disease.

Yep. Eat yogurt, its the easiest way. And I was told by my GYN that b.v. cannot be passed by sex, its just an imbalance of natural bacteria from other factors... diet, panties too tight, whatever.

AHHHHHH I think Im gonna scream!!!! Went to doctor this last Sat and oooooo guess what?
I f'kn got BV!!! I cant belive this...I think I got it from working out with tight panties on? I havent even heard of BV until I read it on SW. I havent worked out in weeks because of this. I feel so self conscious. Well, at least its getting better. They gave me the gel stuff 5 day treatment. Also, what is to be expected when you are taking the gel treatment such as whats suppose to be going on up in there?
After reading this I am confused if BV can be passed to your partner or not? If so I need to get my SO treated before I have to go through this crap again. Now, I know your girls pain with BV. This sucks hot monkey balls!!! Ok I feel better now. Two days left and I hope its gone.

Yes, you're partner needs to get treated too. Otherwise, you'll get it right back.

ok,heres a home remedy, mix 2 tablespoons of baking soda in a quart of warm water and douche 2 x's a day.you should do this just before your period. After that contiue twice a day for as long as you have it.-also another tip, double rinse your underwear after washing -harsh chemicals can increase irritation.Panty hose contribute to infections ,thigh highs are better to wear. Aanibiotics taken for other kinds of illnesses can trigger vaginal infections, trying different brands of condoms or spermacides can cause vaginitus,so try and stick with one brand. And whatever you do reguardless of the old myth,Don't use tampons dipped in yogurt!bacteria grows like crazy in yogurt.

Try taking Acidophilus everyday. It helps prevent this from developing. BV can be caused by the absense of "good bacteria" down there, and taking this replenishes the good bacteria that is lacking. Good luck!

For the first time in 11 years, I have BV. I started dancing again 3 weeks ago. Coincidence? I think not. Bleh.

I have to agree that dancing does have something to do with it..I had so many recurrences of bv that is was crazy, I thought I would never get better, but last year I stopped working at a full nude bar..and WHAMMO bv gone. I dont work at a club that does couch dances anymore and I havent had another recurrence in a whole year!! It does suck though, cuz I am thinking of going back to the nude bar within a couple of months, but the one thing that is making me not want to is the bv stuff..:-\
