I just think racism is silly. I am a biology/chemistry major in college and speaking from a scientific perspective, race doesn't even exist. You can look at the genome for dogs and tell if it's a Saint Bernard or a Chihuahua. You can't look at a genome of a human and tell if the person is "black" or "white" or "asian" or whatever.
According to most anthropologists and geneticists, race is more of a social construct than it really is a biological one. Almost everyone is a mutt, people just don't want to admit it. Othlello and Desdemona, Thomas Jefferson and Sally Hemings, Strom Thurmond, "interbreeding" has been happening for centuries and will continue to.
My uncle lived next to a young supposedly "white" couple who had a baby and the baby looked like it could be African American. The husband thought the wife cheated on him so they did a DNA test. Turns out the kid is his. This means both of this supposedly white people probably both have black ancestory, it just happened to come out in this generation. This type of occurance really isn't that rare in which white people find out they have black ancestory. I don't think I have ever met a black person in this country who isn't part white. And I have failed to mention the Native American, Asian, etc ancestory many people have.
Racism also depends on what country and what time period you are talking about. 150 years ago, Irish, Italian, and Slavic people were not considered white. Only Germans and English were considered white. And many light skinned blacks, when they go to a predominatly black country such as Nigeria, they are seen as white. There are 7 billion people on this planet and they all have very widely varying views of race and ethnicity. My ex-boyfriend was Swedish and he hated Danes and Norweigans.
So I guess to sum up my 2 cents is that biologically speaking, race really doesn't exist and everyone is a mutt anyway so why be judgemental about people? Racism is just something people do so that they can feel better about themselves. It's simply sad that in the 21st century people still can't drop their old Victorian attitudes.

Kali- There's surely a lot of truth in what you say but
you can't ignore a long history in this country of
discrimination. BTW- before Emancipation almost ALL
instances of "racial mixing" were far from voluntary
on the part of the women. They were seen as "property"; not people by their owners.
The only country that come close to the U.S. for
being ethnically diverse and multi-cultural is, I think,
Brazil- Portugese, Spanish, Irish, German, Italian,
African, Indian and local native S. Americans all
mixed together. In Brazil "racism" in the classical
sense is almost unheard of. We could learn a lot
from them.

I have to agree with you The_Kid. This country has a long ugly history that can't be done away with over night. It's taken centuries to get to this point, who knows how many centuries it will take to heal the wounds.
Brazil is an amazing country. People there don't look at each other in racial terms there and they have such a rich mix of cultures. I love the United States but I think it has many "hang ups" from the past that many other countries have been able to get over. Many countries had slavery in the past such as Brazil, but no longer hold really racist attitudes. The U.S. also seems to have difficulty dropping Victorian sexual attitudes. Most other industrialized nations see sex as a natural thing but the U.S. is still freaked out about it. It just seems to me that the U.S. seems to be in an 1800's time warp when it comes to issues like race and sex compared to other places.

CHICAGO, Illinois (AP) -- Bill Cosby went off on another tirade against the black community Thursday, telling a room full of activists that black children are running around not knowing how to read or write and "going nowhere."
He also had harsh words for struggling black men, telling them: "Stop beating up your women because you can't find a job."
Cosby made headlines in May when he upbraided some poor blacks for their grammar and accused them of squandering opportunities the civil rights movement gave them.
He shot back Thursday, saying his detractors were trying in vain to hide the black community's "dirty laundry."
"Let me tell you something, your dirty laundry gets out of school at 2:30 every day, it's cursing and calling each other n------ as they're walking up and down the street," Cosby said during an appearance at the Rainbow/PUSH Coalition & Citizenship Education Fund's annual conference.
"They think they're hip," the entertainer said. "They can't read; they can't write. They're laughing and giggling, and they're going nowhere."
In his remarks in May at a commemoration of the anniversary of the Brown v. Board of Education desegregation decision, Cosby denounced some blacks' grammar and said those who commit crimes and wind up behind bars "are not political prisoners."
"I can't even talk the way these people talk, 'Why you ain't,' 'Where you is' ... and I blamed the kid until I heard the mother talk," Cosby said then. "And then I heard the father talk ... Everybody knows it's important to speak English except these knuckleheads. You can't be a doctor with that kind of crap coming out of your mouth."
Cosby elaborated Thursday on his previous comments in a talk interrupted several times by applause. He castigated some blacks, saying that they cannot simply blame whites for problems such as teen pregnancy and high school dropout rates.
"For me there is a time ... when we have to turn the mirror around," he said. "Because for me it is almost analgesic to talk about what the white man is doing against us. And it keeps a person frozen in their seat, it keeps you frozen in your hole you're sitting in."
Cosby lamented that the racial slurs once used by those who lynched blacks are now a favorite expression of black children. And he blamed parents.
"When you put on a record and that record is yelling 'n----- this and n----- that' and you've got your little 6-year-old, 7-year-old sitting in the back seat of the car, those children hear that," he said.
He also condemned black men who missed out on opportunities and are now angry about their lives.
"You've got to stop beating up your women because you can't find a job, because you didn't want to get an education and now you're (earning) minimum wage," Cosby said. "You should have thought more of yourself when you were in high school, when you had an opportunity."
Cosby appeared Thursday with the Rev. Jesse Jackson, founder and president of the education fund, who defended the entertainer's statements.
"Bill is saying let's fight the right fight, let's level the playing field," Jackson said. "Drunk people can't do that. Illiterate people can't do that."
Cosby also said many young people are failing to honor the sacrifices made by those who struggled and died during the civil rights movement.
"Dogs, water hoses that tear the bark off trees, Emmett Till," he said, naming the black youth who was tortured and murdered in Mississippi in 1955, allegedly for whistling at a white woman. "And you're going to tell me you're going to drop out of school? You're going to tell me you're going to steal from a store?"
Cosby also said he wasn't concerned that some whites took his comments and turned them "against our people."
"Let them talk," he said.
I think Bill is on to something!

I have raised my child to be color blind.. I chose to do this long before I had children..
I was also raised that way. My parents gave me dolls of all colors and I have already started to do the same thing with my child. I believe if you expose children to lots of cultures the odds of them adopting racial hatred is next to nothing.
Dammit, big_daddy...you beat me to that article :) I read it today while I was at work, and wanted to post it....but get a little nervous about having a STRIPPER WEB banner on my screen when I'm supposed to writing up my TPS Reports.
the U.S. seems to be in an 1800's time warp when it comes to issues like race and sex compared to other places.
Kali - I agree with and respect a lot of what you have stated...except for that particular statement. There is a great number of issues in many other countries that are very common place. Women being a lower class citizen..... not being permitted to marry outside of one's religion....arranged marriages, etc.

Women being a lower class citizen.....
Black women face perhaps the greatest challenge of any group in the USA today. Especially with the high teenage pregnancy rate, the very high percentage of single black mothers of all ages, the difficulty in collecting child support from vanished fathers, and the low pay scale generally available to them.
So when I hear 'players' complementing women by saying how they'd like to be "The daddy of your baby", as is apparently considered to be a suave line, I am not at all impressed. This attitude sucks, like the ubiquitous term 'bitch".

You guys I don't mean to sound racist here, but I agree with Cosby completly, but it's not just a good idea for the black people of America. It's a good idea for all people of America and everywhere else too. The young people of America(especially) are going no where. When I was in school, we cared about an education. Now it seems that noone cares.
I agree with Bill on this as I still do on the things he used to say when he was a comedian. If we could just beat our kids again, things would be different. If I even looked at my parents the way soem kids now do; I would have been knocked backwards against the closest wall. Hell, and if I talked back.... Oh you don't wanna know. So I think to solve the problems with America today we need to beat our kids again.
Kitana
"The beating will now begin...." ~Bill Cosby
That's not racist, Kitana. I applaud him and hope everyone listens.
....except for the beating of the kids comment. Physical punishment has been proven to be one of the absolute least effective forms of successful punishment. There is a vast space between doing nothing and hitting a child that needs to be covered by parents.
....that said, I will say that I have met some children that were so awful, I can understand parents who chain them to trees. :)

Stripper tips. I should have clarified myself and said "western countries". Yeah, compared to the Taliban, the United States isn't that bad. And it really wasn't that long ago (less than 100 years) when women couldn't vote, couldn't have the same career as a man, etc.
Djoser. I agree with what you said, especially when it comes to "do you want my baby" but also keep in mind that black women end up going to college at twice the rate of black men and their teen pregnancy rate has gone down dramatically over the past 10 years. In my home state of Ohio right now, hispanic and white girls actually have the higher teen pregnancy rates.
I also pretty much agree with Bill Cosby.

Stripper Tips, I spent a lot of time trying to find the right words to respond to your comments earlier. When I say beat, I don't mean throw kids up against a wall and break bones or cause them to bleed. I simply meant that corporal pumishment should return.
I remember when I was a kid in school. If I did something wrong to deserve a spanking, I first got one from the teacher, then from the principal,(my Dad's cousin) then from my great grandmother,(my babysitter), then when I got home I got one from my Mom, then when Dad came home one from him too. I learned after ONE time, not to mess up in school anymore. I'm not advocating the actual pyhsical aspect as much as the consiquences aspect of it. I learned really quickly that all of my actions have consiquences. Some I will not like, therefore I must try not to do the thing that I will not like the outcome of. That's what our children(and most of our society) lact. Fear. Fear of the effect of their cause.
You tell a child if they act up in school, they will get suspended, what do they hear? "If I fuck up, then I don't have to be here(where I don't wanna be anyway), and I can stay home and play ps2." Where is the adverse effect there? That we have stupid kids.
The same goes for adults who break the law.
Say I kill someone, and I plead out, I get 6mo. and probation. Big deal! So bascially if you mess up you twist the law to suit you and you get no ill effect. If society inposed worse effects, then we would have more people that respect others. We would have smarter, more intelligent citizens, who cared about each other and their fellow man.
I understand that there will always be bad apples in every bushel, but if we show the bad apples we won't stand for their bad behaivor then we might be able to change them. And at the very least breed out some of the miscreatence.

Martin Luther King had it right when he urged us to look at what is inside a person, not what's on the outside, and to create a colorblind society where we're all recognized as unique individuals. Unfortunately while we honor the man we ignore his message. Our social policy for the past 40 years has been the exact opposite of what he urged, and as long as that continues we will have racism. Instead of treating everyone as individuals we label everyone as a member of some group, then treat the groups differently. Instead of eliminating racism we argue about which forms of racial discrimination are good and which are bad, which is a losing argument for everyone. It should be illegal to label anyone by race, to ask their race, to refer to them by race etc. It's racist to ask someone their race, and it's racist to answer. There is no possible use of such information that isn't racist. Try this - whenever someone asks you your race refuse to answer. Or check the box marked "other" which is the only true answer any of us can give anyway since, as others have correctly pointed out, we're all mongrels.
The_Kid

Kali & FONDL- One reason that we could & should learn
from Brazil is because there are NO "hyphenated"
Brazilians; everyone is just Brazilian. Not like in this
country where we insist on differentiating other people
AND OURSELVESi.e. "Italian-American; Irish-american
etc. " You just don't see "Black Brazilian; German-Brazilian" and they don't think of themselves that way.
They are all just "Brazilians". I'd love to see more of
that in this country.
None of this is to say, in my opinion, that we cannot also have racial pride and celebration of heritage. I'm all for that as well. I think the problem comes in how we use it to fully define ourselves to the degree that we insist "our" particular sect is different...and then scream "racism" when others say "Yeah...you're right...your group is different."
Wanna have your cake, or you wanna eat it?
FONDL

There's nothing wrong with celebrating and continuing customs that your family inherited from ancestors who came from a different country. But these aren't racial in nature. There are no races that share a common heritage. Celebrating race is by definition racist.
The_Kid
07-08-2004, 09:56 AM
FONDL- I think it depends on what you mean by
"CELEBRATING" race. The Klan and other white hate
groups certainly "celebrate" being white. Like many
Haters they revel and wallow in their own ignorance-
EVERY reputable anthropologist that I know of agrees
that we are ALL descended from humans who first
developed in AFRICA !
I think that's why many Klan members believe in
Creation as opposed to Evolution.
Pre MacArthur and post-war reconstruction the
Japanese believed themselves superior to everyone
else- fellow Asians, whites and blacks.
So someone please tell me- if and when certain
Black groups & organizations do MORE than
celebrate their own heritage; when they claim to
be superior; isn't that also racist?
Djoser

There are without question black, hispanic, and many other kinds of racists.
The thing that is generally the most aggravating about racism to is when one race holds more in the way of wealth and priviledge than others, which tends understandably to piss off the 'have-nots' a little more if they are subjected to racist treatment. This is why "White Power" is so offensive to everyone.
To end racism, you must end so called "white entitlement."
A small percentage of the population controls all the wealth in this country and is not willing to relinquish their power.
Look at the republican party today and their association with the religious right.
Until this country's politicians are willing and able to push a policy of accepting peoples differences and that goes for First Amendment rights as well instead of pushing the bible and old fashioned decency it will never change.
Spreading the wealth instead of hoarding it would be necessary to make all races and classes of people feel on equal footing.

I avoid threads like this ordinarily, however, I feel like interjecting my opinion here. As much as I hate to, I agree with CO. Yes, there is racism. Yes, there are prejudiced people. But, from my experience, the different groups create it in alot of ways. For example, I live in Myrtle Beach. Every year, there is a Harley Bike Week and two weeks later, a Black Bike Week. Ok, the Harley people come, they spend cash, they party, they leave, all is well. About 5 years ago, the black bikers came in, they tore up our town. They looted, assaulted, raped, damaged property, etc. We didn't have enough police to cover them. The next year when they come, we have the National Guard in, hotels and restaurants close. So now they are crying racism, when they themselves caused it. Just a small group, I know, just an example. Take a little jaunt down to the crack area in this town and what do you find? Minorities, mostly. Why? They have similar opportunities, but they DON'T CARE. They don't want better than what they have. The ones who do, get out, and rise above it. Just like whites.... the ones who live in poverty and want better, do better. That's what they know, and that's where they belong. If we did redistribute the wealth like Tina suggests, we would have ghetto people sitting around in a fucking nice community. Then, eventually, take a look and it looks like the ghetto. Why? Because that's what they know and that's what they need. You can take the man out of the ghetto, but you can't take the ghetto out of the man. I believe it does have to start with education and within the family, but if they don't want to be educated, what are you gonna do?
Me, for example. I grew up in a middle class abusive family. I had the capacity to be so much "more" than I am, according to societal standards. I was in all AP classes, and scored in the 99 percentile in the 5th grade. What did I do? I traded in my nerdism to be a punk and a rocker in the 10th grade. My grades went downhill from there, and I ended up graduating like 30th in my class, when I could've graduated top 5. I could've probably gone to much higher quality colleges, and possibly gotten a scholarship, had I TRIED. But I went to UNC-G, partied the whole time, and graduated with a 3.0 gpa. Then I proceeded to move to MB and become a stripper. I threw it all away, and partied for the last 9 years with a musician. Do I regret it? In some ways. In others, no, because it left me stronger than I ever would've been had I taken the alternate route. I think I am far more able to take care of myself out in the real world, whereas before I probably would've never left my hometown. And, of course, I had more FUN than alot of people. I didn't care at the time about taking the "intellectual" route. I can blame it on my parents, and say that if I would've had a better home life, I would've made "better" choices. More-than-likely true. I was happy that way, because that's how I grew up, and that's what I knew. Technically, though, it's nobody's fault but mine. Change must begin within the family structure. You can give someone the world, but if they don't want it, it's not going to change a damn thing. You can offer them all the opportunities in the world, but if they don't care, they aren't going to take them. People end up where they belong, based on their backgrounds, for the most part. Some people rise above it. It all depends on the individual and what they want out of life. So, for blacks and some other minorities, their condition just perpetuates itself.
Practically EVERYONE experiences some sort of racism, or prejudism. Blacks get a helluva lot of support, and they cry about it the most, imo. Hell, where is the government when strippers cry about prejudism? MOST groups experience it: women, blondes, strippers, blacks, attorneys, preachers, hippies, etc. ALL the time I experience people who treat me a certain way because of the way I look. Take a well-groomed black guy in a nice suit, he's going to be treated better than a white guy with a hippie look, because he is conforming to what America thinks upstanding citizens look like. Imo, it's less about what color you are, and more about the way you choose to present yourself, and how hard you work. The opportunity is there.... who's taking it is the question. So yes, they do create the stereotypes in alot of ways, just like alot of strippers do.
I could and have cried about how women are treated in society. That's my beef. Things are changing, however, just like they are changing for all minorities. We have to make the changes individually. That is where it matters. You could make all people equal tomorrow, with equal opportunities, but if they aren't ready for that growth mentally, then not a damn thing will change. Change, imo, is happening rather quickly, and I am happy with the way things are going. There are more opportunites than ever for minority groups, and they are pushing for more. White men ARE losing power, things ARE becoming more equal. Compare today with 50 years ago. It is inevitable that sooner or later all groups will have equal opportunity, that is, if those stupid fuckers at the top don't blow us all away first. Change happens when people are READY. We can give people the opportunity for change, which we have done, but we can't force them to change. As much as we talk about how shitty this country is, this is a great country, imo. We give people the opportunity for growth and change, and it is happening. We are free. Be happy about it.
Hey, I'm no racist, by NO stretch of the imagination. I was checking out this black guy in a suit on the shuttle bus at the Cincinnati Airport the other day.... dayum.... I'd do him. ;)

Again, spoken like a true communist. Why do you expect the GOVERNMENT to take control and make changes? I see you posting this "White Supremacy" bullshit in every single post. You just do not get it! It's not about the government changing anything! They've done as much as they can possibly do. The only thing left is for people like you to get off the damn piss pot and stop crying about how unfair life is with the "white man". The only person holding you down is yourself and your views.
You scream "Affirmative Action", but to be honest, the majority of the affirmative action people do not want to work because they feel "they are owed something". Nothing comes for free. If you want something, then work for it. Want to get into a good college? Then study, work hard and apply. This bullshit about lower scores for "colored" people is discrimination for whites. But, that doesn't bother you, does it? You want to be treated as equals, yet you want a "head start". Playing golf with Tiger Woods? Make sure you know your golf game.
Why is it that some of the Koreans, Asian, Pakistani, etc can come here with nothing but the shirt on their backs and 5 years later have their own business? They have more hurdles than you do...most don't speak english, they're a non-citizen, so they do not qualify for the same "coddling" you do. They bust their ass and make their money. If some immigrant can come over and make a business happen, then what is holding you back? Or are you expecting the government to hand you a multi-million dollar a year business...and tell you that you don't need to pay taxes because you are black and they want you to be "on the level" with the whites?
Racism happens every day of every year. It has been this way since the beginning of time. The only difference between the people who are successful and the people who are not, is that the successful people acknowledged it and succeeded anyways. The non-successful people do what you do...complain about how disadvantaged you are. If that's how you want to live, fine...just don't expect me to hand you money every time you cry.

Do you know who owns most of the assets in the US? Older women. Do you really want to take it away from them and give it to men? That's what you're saying when you talk about redistributing wealth.
If you ask most single women what they look for in a man, the first word out of their mouth will usually be "tall." I'm short, how do you think that makes me feel? Truth is we are all discriminated against in one way or another, it's a fact of life and always will be. Get over it and make the best of your life. That's the only effective way to deal with any "ism."

damn, I hate to bring up race again, but....
Buried in yesterdays CNN headlines was the pretty funny story of an education chief taunting a preschooler. The story was standard political crap until this came up:
"Democratic state Assemblyman Mervyn Dymally, who had scheduled a protest by civil rights organizations, canceled the demonstration after an apparent mix-up over the girl's racial background.
Dymally was quoted in the San Jose Mercury News Thursday saying the child was "a little African-American girl. Would he (Riordan) have done that to a white girl?"
The girl is white, with blonde hair.
Dymally did not return telephone calls. His office issued a statement Wednesday calling Riordan's remarks to the girl "outrageous and irresponsible," then issued another statement Thursday saying, "To err is human; to forgive is divine."
"Race is not a factor in this issue," Dymally said in Thursday's statement, adding that Riordan had apologized a second time. "It is time for us to move on.""
Ummm....

Venus, I agree...
When my grandparents came here from Cuba, they had NOTHING. No money, ONE extra pair of clothing (wow so nice of the communists to "allow" them to bring it... they took my grandmother's wedding ring, her jewelry.... They robbed my family of their TWO restaurants and boutique in Cuba.
Yet when they came here, they worked this asses off.... so hard that within a few years, my granparents had a house and a car, and their brother and sister also did too. (They got a business) and shit, they didnt speak a word of english. (Now they can a little, but even still)
The point is, they worked their asses off and it paid off.

Interesting comments everyone.
Remember though, yeah some people might play the race/discrimination card too much (and not just "blacks", other minority groups as race/ethnicity, sexual orientation, disabilities, and religious groups as well) BUT it does exist.
It's like with rape, because a few women/girls might lie about it, whenever a women is raped she is almost always called a liar by everyone and no one ends up taking her seriously until 8 other women are raped. Most women who say they were raped are, very few really lie about it. But just because a few lie doesn't mean that every woman who says she is raped should be trivialized. Just because some people might over exaggerate things doesn't mean everyone or even a majority does. "Black" people still suffer from racism the most of any group and do get more hate crimes than any other group (you can look in the almanac for that.) Yes, of course there are "black" racists as well, but blacks are only 10% of the population of the United States. (Yes, just one in 10 americans.) Even if there were a proportionally equal number of "black" racists to "whites", "blacks" would still have to deal with more simply because of the numbers.
Racism is alive and well in the country.
Btw, I put race is quotes because like I said in my previous post, it really doesn't exist biologically speaking.
What?? This LAND OF OPPORTUNITY stuff wasn't meant for the CUBANS!
...kiiiidding...just kidding................ :)

just got done reading this...thread...
based on most of the posts here...all i can say is...damn...we don't want to do better?...etc...well...if that's how most of you think...and if that's your view of me...a black woman...then why the hell do i still come here...to a place where i'm viewed as a lazy whiner...deserving of the treatment that i get...no wonder most of the black dancers...that used to post regularly...don't have much to say anymore...i' don't either...after reading all of this...

Sorry for my ramblings, :P.
My roommate last year at college was a "black" female. She is a very smart and kind person. Everyone assumed she just got in because of "affirmitive action" even though she held a gpa of 4.25 and had an SAT score of 1520. I knew TONS of "white" kids who got into school only because they had a parent or sibling or grandparent who went there. Lots of private universities will take someone who has "legacy" 2 or 3 times over someone who isn't. But no one ever complained about them. Get real, I doubt that George W. Bush and his daughter Jenna would have been able to get into Yale if they had Joe Six pack as parents.
Don't freak out about affirmative action, if someone isn't qualified for college they will flunk out (which happens to students of all races all the time) or if it's a job and they don't work, they will be fired. It really isn't a big deal. Besides, "white" women have actually benefited the MOST from affirmative action. Just look at women's occupations before the 1970s and 60s.
And most black people I know really don't like people like Al Sharpton, Jesse Jackson etc. In fact, most "black" people I know are frustrated with them. Wouldn't you hate if you had Jerry Farwell represent "white" people? And all "black" people assumed that Farwell was how all whites thought? There are 30 million "black" people (approx.) in this country and they have different ideas about different things. There is no consensus on anything, just like there isn't for "whites", or "asians", or "native americans" or any other so called group.

Topaz, no one deserves the treatment that they get. People don't want to admit that racism really does exist. Racism is the real problem in the United States, not people "playing the race card".
People have to acknowledge their own prejudices, not complain about how "other people" lie. Complaining about a few people who may go over the ban wagon doesn't do any good for the situation and just causes more stress.
No, Topaz...I think you're missing the point. (or perhaps it is just my point and I'm missing everyone else's)
Let me sum it up.
I would like to see people even the playing field.
I would like to see white people kick the shit out of the KKK and say "Your behavior is not representative of our society."
I would like to see black society stand up and say "Bill Cosby is right, we need to represent ourselves better."
I guess my point is that we all need to meet in some middle ground. There is shared responsibility here.
