You think customer service is bad here?
Go to Europe. They have never heard of that phenomenon. It's all about how entitled they are to their employment and how much you're inconveniencing them by merely asking them to do their jobs.
Really? I grew up all over Europe and I wouldn't say the customer service is poor. I can see why Americans might think their attitude is poor- it's true that they largely dispense with the niceties. They may not smile much or tell you to have a great day, but they usually still do their job and get me what I need or ask for. I rather prefer that actually, it seems fake and obnoxious how enthusiastic service workers are always expected to be here. I don't really need a smile and an inquiry from a stranger as to how my day is going. And I hate to go into a Safeway and see a cashier with a fake grin plastered on his face all the time because he knows his company has a policy of firing cashiers for not smiling. That's fucking retarded.
