Most of my friends know, except for a few who would do that whole "I need to rescue you OUT if that horrible existence" thing. My family doesn't and won't. They don't get it. They think I'm a waitress. I tend to tell people I don't know the same thing. The only person I might tell is my grandma, since she used to own a SC about 20 years ago! I just don't want her to feel she has to tell everyone, you know?

My cover up is that I am a bartender at a techno club, that will keep the 'rents from popping in to see me. My brothers know, one of the them went to my 1st amature contest and turned his chair away from the stage and cheered the loudest. My BF knows, met him through my old DJ. Most of my friends are not dancers, but love to hear about my job.

Nope. Nobody knows. A few freinds know I DID, but they don't know that I DO. Nobody in my family knows. I come form a devout Lutheran family and they'd go into convulsions.

My job as a stripper is also a huge secret. I just had my audition tonight and I felt incredible on stage, but working out the details is going to be difficult since I have about 89723958723 people who demand to know where I am on a daily basis. I've decided to tell everyone I've gotten a job babysitting for a friend out of town. My best friend from high school knows-- he came to visit this week for Spring Break and had to go with me to my audition. I did run into someone I used to wait tables with, she waits tables at my club, but she promised not to tell anyone we know. I live with a very religious family that takes good care of me so I'm pretty sure I'd be exiled lol. I'm just sick of boring desk jobs, waiting tables, and shitty retail management, and I'm pretty sure this is the only way I'll be able to save enough money to buy a house in under three years. Fortunately I don't have any of the drug addictions often associated with stripping lately--so all my money will actually be saved.

My boyfriend knows, and a couple of my friends. Well one of my "friends" told like everyone she knows at the high school I went to... bitch. So a lot of my old friends know.

As long as my dad and brother don't know, I don't care who else knows.

My in-laws know (but pretend to forget...LOL). My whole family knows...obviously my SO knows. If someone comes right out and asks me if I dance, I'm honest about it. But, I've found that parents in my daughter's play group are less "forgiving" of my job. Not that I give a shit. I probably make more money than any of them, working only 1 day a week. ;)

well my mom found out. she found my contract while picking up laundry in my room. i'm screwed unless i make up a story. i'm pretty sure she'll kick me out but i was thinking about telling her that i let my friend use my information for the contract this weekend so she could make rent, that i babysit for her while she dances, and that i wont get in trouble because i know the manager (he was actually in a band with my friend but he doesn't know i know that... like she'll ever know). i really can't have her or anyone else knowing, and i don't want to quit. it's too much fun.

well my mom found out. she found my contract while picking up laundry in my room. i'm screwed unless i make up a story. Oh, wow. I hate to sound unsupportive because I really wish you nothing but good will. However, red flags are popping up everywhere. First, you took someone to your audition who can now tell. Shoulda left him behind with the excuse that you were going on a job interview. Then a waitress at the club is apparently in a position to tell people you know in common. Not much you could do to avoid that, so hopefully she'll keep her promise. Then you left your contract in your room where your mom could find it after you failed to pick up after yourself so she did it for you. Do you see why I cringe that you haven't exercised the highest degree of being careful?

I also don't know if that story you're thinking of telling will be convincing. I assume that's a signed contract she saw? I ask because an unsigned contract would be less incriminating. But if it's got your signature on it, and your mom will recognize your handwriting, I don't understand how your story will explain away why your friend didn't "forge" your name herself and then keep the copy of the contract herself. For that matter, I'd be skeptical of the whole concept that your friend needed to use your information. Maybe I'm not following the specifics there, but I sense you've got an uphill battle on that.

I'm also thinking that, if you get past this incident, you would have a lot more privacy if you moved out. For instance, what's mom going to think when she picks up your stripper clothes?

Well, good luck.

i told my roommates (im in college i live with a couple girls in a dorm) then my sister. my best friends from home know.. thats it though. i would never ever tell my mom i think she would literally disown me or lock me up, she's a bit um... traditional. i dont think she even thinks i ever kissed a boy lol but im veeeery careful about who i tell in school becasue i go to a very conservative school and im just scared people wil find out.

my boyfriend knows (we live together and he knew that i wanted to get into it before i started/am starting in a few days lol), my mom knows because i told her quite awhlie ago when i first started to want to get into it, a great number of my friends know because some i told and some find out and whatnot. Out of the people that matter to me I think only one is actively disapproving of it (which i expected when i told her but i had to be honest with her). but for the most part everybody is pretty supportive.

Can I ask.. did all of you dance near your homes?
Im going to be dancing in the capital city one hour away from where I live.. However a lot of people my age move there to live for university etc. How should I keep it a secret. I was thinking of wearing wigs etc and contact lenses so if someone identified me I would be able to say that it wasn't me.
I'm not ashamed to want to become a stripper. We all know its just work/ But not everyone sees it like that.

I didn't feel the need to lie about it so I didn't. Maybe I should have since I have problems with my Mom over the job. But deep down I don't think I should have to pretend to be something or someone I am not with family and friends.

I live across the country from most of my friends and family. I will never let my parents know but I recently told 2 of my sisters and they were so envious. My local friends all know and they think its so funny and love having a "hot stripper" as a friend. I love the idea of having a secret life! Besides, when I'm at work I'm not "Katie"...I'm
'Savannah".

My boyfriend knows that I want to do it (He jokes about how cool it will be to date a stripper) and most of my friends know, because they have no contact with my family. I don't talk to my family a lot, so I think it'll be pretty easy. My mom lives in town, but I avoid her. I just don't know how my father and godparent would react, perhaps worried. My mom has told me on several occasions that stripping is degrading towards women and supports women being under men, blah blah blah. I would tell her just to shut her up or listen to her whine while I tell her how much money I make, but she would then get on the phone and tell EVERYONE. I'll just tell her I'm waitressing at a club. That will be satisfying. :)

my mother knows. i told her after a year. i never thought i would. she was VEY SUPRIZINGLY ok with it. she wishes i didn't do it, but she understands and is glad because it's putting me through school. we aren't telling my step father (who i consider to be my real father) though. he would .......not take it well. for some reason i get the strong impression that he would give my bf (of almost 4 years) major shit about it. they get along and everything, i just feel like my dad would be very "how can you let her do that" about it.

all of my friends know. none of them give me shit about it. no one in my boyfriend's family knows and it's probably best that way. it's a hard secret to keep sometimes. i have to lie a lot about where i'm going, "how work went" and things like that.

so to sum it up... my friends and my mom. that's it. oh and my bf, but that's a given.

I would add that since the time that this thread was started, a number of new developments have taken place with IRS automatic reporting requirements that could have a major impact on the ability to keep dancing a 'secret'.

First, lots of clubs will wind up reporting at least a portion of your income to the IRS via a form 1099. If you fail to file a tax return and the club files a 1099 with your name and SS#, trouble will soon follow. Also, if you have been claimed as a dependent on your parents' tax return, officially reported dancing income can jeopardize their ability to claim you as a dependent in the future and can also affect your parents' tax rate. Also if you are listed as a dependent on your parent's past tax returns, and if a 1099 report of dancing income with your SS# shows up at the IRS without either you filing a tax return or your parents including your dancing income on their tax return, it is extremely likely that your parents' taxes will be audited right along with yours (via cross-checking your SS# on your parent's past tax returns).

If you are a student, all colleges and gov't grant / loan agencies now also automatically report to the IRS. Since grants and loans are contingent on 'family' income i.e. your parents income plus your income, the existance of officially reported dancing income can not only reduce your eligibility for grants and loans but can potentially result in fraud charges against your parents and yourself if grants and loans were obtained without your parents including your dancing income on the grant and loan applications they filled out.

My parents don't know. I told one of my sisters, with whom I am close, just because I knew that she'd be disappointed if she didn't know and that she'll help with damage control if my (pretty conservative and scatterbrained) mom ever finds out. I don't have any thoughts that my mom will find out, however. I have a great cover story (I basically tell her that I get paid for activities that I volunteer for), I do my taxes, and she lives about 1000 miles away. And if she does... well, she does know I've been supporting myself comfortably since I left the house.

I'm really happy it was... brought back to life because I've seen some threads that I want to comment to, but felt that I was too late because the last post had been in 2005... I dont feel so silly anymore.

Oh man, Melonie that was really helpful, I think I am still being considered a dependent. I don't know though - my mom always sends our taxes out and I've been working under the table for the past two years.... I don't actually know that I've ever done my own taxes... I feel silly now - like dumb and girly for never having done my own taxes. The school info is def good to know but I dont get any financial aid (my grandmother was generous enough to pay for my school - wow!!)...

melonie, i understand what you're saying. in my case though, my parents income has nothing to do with my grants/loans because i'm 27.

My bf is the only one that knows. I drive several hours to dance, just work Saturday nights, but it is still sometimes hard to keep secret. So far I've been successful, hopefully it lasts! I just don't want to have to explain myself or deal with the stereotype. Its my business and that is all.

I never told my folks about it; I lied and said I was still in food service but that I'd taken a much better paying job at a nightclub. Even when they got my 1099 in the mail (oops!) they never said anything. I figure they don't want to know or didn't notice.

I have this one girlfriend who thinks it's the most amazing thing ever. We were at a house party full of people I'd never met before and she yells "kt's got the greatest job in the world! tell them what you do!!!" That we had to have a lil' chat over

Everyone I know, knows that I dance. If I'm just meeting someone, I'll refrain from telling then until I know them better. I don't keep it secret at all. My family is very accepting and supportive of my decisions, and I'm very thankful for that. :)

Only my SO and my closest friends know. My mom suspects it and rolls her eyes anytime my younger siblings ask if I am going to work (they think I'm a waitress).

One of my boyfriend's family members was at the house one time and I was getting ready to leave for work. I had on a skimpy top and fitted capris, my daughter comes into the livingroom and asks "Mommy are you going to work?" and I had to say yes lol. I wonder what he thought when he saw all of that. I'm sure he knows now also.
