The Pieta.
To see it in pictures is indifferent. To see it up close is breathtaking - the detail of the veins, the musculature, the folds of the clothing, the expression.
Artistic liberties were taken but in a way that only enhances the piece. Mary is too youthful, but her youth emphasized the tragedy in her features. Her size is too large compared to the body of Jesus, but it works wonderfully in allowing her to better cradle the body. Her hands are too large for the rest of her, but only done so to highlight the expressiveness of her gesture.
This wasn't sculpted in some matrix, then rendered in bronze. This was cut from a single block of marble. Had to get it right the first time. As nonartists compared to this guy, we can't imagine the creative foresight it takes to remove marble to make, in part, such things as deliberatively large, expressive hands.
I'm not promoting the religion behind this. It's simply a stunning work of art.
Michelangelo was the Mozart of the art world. Amazing prodigal talent. One of the few people ever able to draw a perfect circle freehand.

VADEN - I absolutely LOVE that!! Holy crap! I don't have reactions to art that are very intense, for the most part. That, however, I would put on my wall in a heartbeat.
